too late. ali is live in santa rosa with more on what happened. ali. >> reporter: frank, it's still cold and fairly windy here in santa rosa, but add driving rain to the mix and that's the kind of weather conditions gets that a nature preserve had to deal with last night. that stormy weather led to the death of a woman on vacation there with her young granddaughter. exotic animals wander the grounds at safari west in santa rosa. this is where 70-year-old gale of alabama spent the past two days with her seven-year-old granddaughter. >> gale was just very together woman, very much with it, and very much enjoying herself. >> overnight guests stay in luxury tents, built with wooden frames this. is what is left of the tent she stayed in. sheriff's officers say the grandmother was reading in bed during last night's storm. her granddaughter playing on the floor, when storm winds uprooted a oak tree and it came

crashing down on the tent. a father and son staying next door were the first to respond. >> they heard the tree come down and then heard screaming. when they saw what happened, used a pair of scissors to cut into the tent, got the seven- year-old girl out and stayed with the grandmother until she passed. >> she was part of a gruel of 18 promise from around the country who came to is fari west as part of an organized trip for grandmothers and their grandchildren. rosalyn and her grandson were also with the group. >> total shock. total shock. you realize the fragility of life. you never know. >> representatives from safari west say the woman's granddaughter was not hurt in the accident and was with her family it morning. >> they talked to the owners and -- it's an act of god, it's horrible thing to have happen. >> coming up at 6, we'll have

more on what sheriff's spokespersons say about their investigation into this death. live in santa a, ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. a ski resort in lake tahoe where it's snowing heavily, rescue crews race to go find a missing snowboarder. a teen from the placer county sheriff's department and ski patrol members have been searching all day for 25-year- old shawntae willis. she was last seen going waft the resort boundary sign. the sacramento bee reports willis is a ski instructor and strong athlete but that she suffers from epilepsy. rescue crews are especially concerned because temperatures are expected to be in the single digits tonight. we'll have a live report from the scene of that search coming up tonight at 6. now that the intense storm is over, work crews are trying to clean up the damage. and tonight the story of a frightening situation in the east bay and the man who saw it all happen in front of him. kristin is live in the oakland

hills with our report. >> reporter: pg&e crews work, hard here in oakland hills. you can see some of the equipment they've moved into place to replace a power pole and transformer knocked down when a tree came down earlier today. that right there is the replace. transformer they're preparing to put into place. this is a story that's being repeated throughout the bay area as crews clean up after last night's big storm. after a soaking night of rain and high winds, this pine tree collapsed, just in time for jack to watch it all happen. >> i was actually coming about from walking my dog and saw the tree fall. it was amazing. it was a very slow, relaxed glow it came to rest on our garage. >> neighbors say they had warned the city this tree was in danger of falling, city even came out a few months ago to mark the base of the tree with this white x. he says despite the inconvenience, he knows that tree removal is a relatively low priority for a cash-strapped city like

oakland. >> well, the city has many responsibilities, fire, police, et cetera. and these are hard time. so i'm glad there was really -- appears there's no substantial damage. >> as the tree came down it dragged down power lines and snapped a pole off. leaving the transformer dangling and the neighborhood without power. it's a scene that repeated itself throughout the bay area. this morning crews cleared fallen trees. emergency workers say residents need to proceed with caution if they hear a tree come down. >> you want to call it in first, because this is an emergency. and the next thing is to stay clear of them. >> you can see the pg&e crews hard at work here. once these pg&e crews are done, workers from the city of oakland will come out to begin the long, hard job of actually chainsawing the tree, which is still lying across the middle of the road here. we'll stay live here and continue to monitor the

situation here and bring you updates as they warrant. a lucky truck driver dodged a large tree that crashed into a tractor-trailer this afternoon in contra costa county. high winds toppled the giant eucalyptus, which slammed into the cab of the empty cattle truck. the driver was in the trailer at the time getting ready to load the truck with cattle on a ranch near oakland. the driver was startled but not hurt. the tree also clipped a nearby house, but fortunately no one was injured. >> a storm caused a big headache for one family. this is this morning, high winds knocked a power pole down on top of a house. one man and his son were inside when they heard a loud crash. they went outside to find a pg&e electric pole had fallen on their roof, leaguing oil on to the driveway. no one was hurt. pg&e is telling us it's still working to restore power to more than a thousand

customers who began losing electricity last night. up in the north bay more than 200 customers there are without power. in the south bay, nearly 1,000 are still without electricity. over on the peninsula, some 270 customers are still waiting for power, in the east bay much of the power is restored with about 130 customers still waiting for service there. and finally in san francisco, some 220 customers are still without power. the winter weather may have caused problems around the bay area, but today it is making for a beautiful holiday week in lake tahoe. one of our fellow news employees shot these pictures while on vacation in incline village. the latest storm there dropped up to 21 inches of new snow. more than enough for sledding and snowball fights or just romp in the snow. and here's a live look now from our webcam at the weather conditions on highway 80 in truckee. you can see the traffic is really backed up. we just checked with the chp, and right now chains are

required on both 80 and highway 50, unless you have a four- wheel drive. the winter storm warning for the sierra just expired. mark is in for bill tonight. mark. >> this is exactly what you would expect at the last week of the year with the significant rain here in the bay area and the snowfall in the sierra. right now you can see not a lot of coverage here but still some lingering snowshowers around lake tahoe, especially towards southlake but the conditions will be improving quite a bit at least in the short-term over the next two to four hours. back in the bay area, not a lot of coverage out there. you can see a few showers mostly offshore. more activity up to the north up along the north coast, closer to eureka and crescent city but talking about that northerly wind. that is a cold wind and as a result temperatures have cooled off over the past 24 hours, and with the wind still quite gusty and continuing to be the case for this evening and early tomorrow morning. so here's the forecast. the forecast model showing you the projected wind gusts across the bay area and easily topping

>> another note, the jug shop says the still shaky economy forced producers to lower prices coming out live you'll see there are a number of people here buying things. and we wish you well. tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. three dozen university of california highest paid executives are threatening to sue unless uc agrees to increase their pensions. they're de panning a benefits increase for employees who making more than $245,000 a year. the demand was reportedly made in the december 9th letter to the board of regents. the university estimates agree to go the hike would add $5.5 million every year to its unfunded pension liability. the higher pensions are overdue three they say because the regents agreed in 1999 to grant them. on wall street, stock indexes were up by an on pace to their best december in 20 years.

there's no fresh economic or big corporate announcements today. as a result, investors were attracted to the government's latest bond auction. treasuries rallied and stocks drew strength from the successful sale. here's a look at the numbers that dow up nearly 10 points. nasdaq was up 4 points. san jose investigators still sorting out what they call a chaotic set of events that left an officer and two others injured and landed five fema people in jail. it started last night with a home invasion at what police describe as a marijuana grow house on wilkins street. police found the suspect had scattered. officers attracted down one man who jumped. >> a waiting car. when the woman driving tried to run over an officer he fired into the vehicle hitting one of the suspects. other officers later arrested those two suspects and rounded up three more. neighbors say it was a frightening night. >> my daughter was in the shower, and she yelled out,

in the 600 block of bacon street. just northwest of maclaren park. it all started about an hour and a half ago. police there were responding to a call in the area when they say they were confronted by someone carrying a knife. that person with the knife approached police, and was then shot by at least one officer. tonight we know that person who has not been identified is hospitalized with life- threatening injuries. we're told someone who lives there on bacon street said she heard two gunshots but didn't see what happened. you can tell here a lot of investigators are on the streets there, it's blocked off. again be this is in the 600 block of bacon street. just northwest of maclaren park. an officer involved shooting leaving one person with extremely serious injuries. people on bikes, roller skates or blade can't go there but soon folks on segway's can glide on streets on golden gate park. david is live in the city to explain what some folks' concerns are. >> reporter: after a long

approval process, segways are set to roll out in fold end gate park. but even though they're going to do that in february, some park lovers say the machines don't belong in the wild. the paths and trails of san francisco's golden gate park will soon see more foot traffic in february. some of it won't be pounding the pavement. the city's recreation and parks department this month granted a five-year lease to the electric tour company which will conduct segway tours throughout the park. at about $70 a head, the city expects to earn $600,000 over the lengths of the contract. some park neighbors worry the vehicles will cause pile-ups on the paths. >> my concerns are that the segways are a motorized vehicle and don't belong on pathways or trails. >> raymond of the planning association says it's not a safety issue, he says segways belong on roadways with bicycles p will ruin the experience of those hiking park trails. >> you're basically taking the whole path for those machines

and saying to everybody else, either step aside and let us pass or we'll pass you. >> others are worried about where the segway stan will be sets up. the plan to put it in back of the band shell of the park's recently renovated music concourse. some park groups say it will ruin the view for music lovers. >> when people come to the concourse to enjoy a concert or the beauty of the concourse or the peace, they'll see bikes going back and forth, seays going back and things like that. >> we're a temporary use and once the park gets the funds to do that area, i have a feeling we'll get pushed out and put somewhere else. >> the owner of the electric tour company told us the segways will be safe and slow and share the park's paths. >> our footprint is the same size of a pedestrian. the trails in the park are about 10 to wheel to feet wide so we're taking a couple feet of that trial and we stop for everybody, including the squirrels. >> recreation and park officials tell us few complain during the testing in golden gate park but they will be

willing to tweak the tour route if there are any problems with the segways. reporting live, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. officials say it could be new year's eve before the travel backlog from the massive east coast snowstorm is cleared out. airlines are struggling to move people, planes and their crews to their destinations. some passengers arrived in the international sites at new york late monday had so to wait about 11 hours on the tarmac. officials say the long wait was due to no gates being available and officials had gone home for the night. a san francisco international airport there are still some delays due to the conditions on the east coast and midwest. right now flights to jfk and o'hare are running up to 90 minutes late. this is an improvement from yesterday. that's when flights were cancelled or delayed up to four hours. east coast flights to san jose are also experiencing delays. jetblue says its flights from new york and boston will arrive

up to 90 minutes late. if you're taking a flight, the airport suggests contacting your airline first for departure times. this has really been a wild week when it comes to the weather but the storms over for now and mark is filling in for bill. looks like we're just left with some cold weather at least for the moment. >> that's right. and the strong cold front moving through the bay area about 24 hours ago, behind it some cold air in place. overnight lows the coolest locations will be flirting with the freezing mark. right now there are a live storm-tracker 2, not a lot of coverage out there. few snowshowers out towards lake tahoe. you can see some rainshowers closer to the north coast. and in the north bay we have partly cloudy skies, we'll show you this. the current numbers. santa rosa, right now and napa both 46 degrees. so very cold already for this evening. temperatures will continue to drop especially once the winds back off for the evening hours. so as far as rainfall totals you can see these are very impressive for santa rosa, san francisco. look at oakland, over two

inches and keep in mind we picked up most of this rainfall within a six-hour period. san jose not a major storm, just over a half inch. but still adding to at rain bucket down in the south bay. overnight lows you can see partly to mostly cloudy skies, coldest locations in the lower 30s nor santa rosa and napa, san rafael 37. san francisco 42. and livermore around the freezing mark as well at 32 degrees. remember yesterday at this time, this was the scene with the clouds and the heavy rain bands, going to reloop now and there it goes, moving out to the east and the rainfall decreasing rapidly since midnight. and as a result, we just have partly cloudy skies and a few leftover showers. if you are heading to lake tahoe for tomorrow, look for partly cloudy skies, here's a plan for friday, saturday and sunday. for friday mostly cloudy, lows friday morning down to below zero. chance of snow for saturday, nothing major. we could have snowshowers in the sierra on saturday. and then mostly cloudy skies on sunday. afternoon highs mainly in the

out your pot roast. federal regular lators are revamping meat labels but some advocates aren't impressed. >> to make it mandatory to get every supermarket to put up hard too find, misleading, confusing information is no advance for consumers. >> in 2012, the department of agriculture will make nutritional information available on labels and signs in the grocery store. 40 cuts of beef, poultry, pork and lamb will show the amount of fat, cholesterol, sodium and protein that they contain. but one watchdog group argueth new rules are a win for the meat industry, not consumers. >> the new regulations pretty much give the meat industry what it wanted. no information on the steaks themselves, and permission to use the term lean on ground beef and poultry. >> still, nutrition experts predict people might be shocked when they learn what is in the meat. for example, a four ounce

reporting live, maureen naylor, ktvu channel 2 news. in san mateo county, cal rans reopened a highway 1. it was shut down overnight between pacifica and monteria after wind and rain battered the coastside. the mudslide was reported around 10:30 last night. crews worked throughout the night to remove the mud and rocks and reopen the highway about 6 this morning. tonight there's a chance of more rain ahead. mark is live in the weather center now. mark, we're not looking at anything like what we just had, right? no not like last night. a cold front has moved east and as a result we have a few linger showers. you can see live storm-tracker 2 and the showers to the north of the bay area. we could have a few sprinkles showing up locally. you can see the wind speeds out at the west-northwest. still fairly impressive and gusty, around 27 in monterey bay. also 31 and closer to home for

ceremonies in sacramento on monday for incoming governor jerry brown and incoming attorney general cam la harris. late last night the city council voted to put teresa highsmith on administrative leave. they made the move after she accepted another job in southern california. she had accepted the position of interim city attorney for the city of barstow when someone sent them this video of her at the barstow city council meeting on december 20th. highsmith had not informed the city council in alameda of her intention to leave her position as that city's attorney. still not like it used to be with salmon everywhere, but tonight after declines there's good news about the salmon population. jim is live in marin county with new figures. what they could mean for the upcoming salmon season. >> reporter: the owners of the fishing boats behind me must be chomping at the bit with this

the city of san francisco reportedly plans to offer millions of dollars to the victims of a 2008 cable car accident to settle several lawsuits. the san francisco examiner reports the city will offer $2 million to a woman who suffered a broken leg and 50,000 each to two other injured passengers. on july 13th of 2008 they were aboard a cable car which became stuck on mason and washington streets. the operators got off to free the car, which then rolled off its tracks and crashed into a curb. the settlement would have to be approved by the city's transportation agency. fremont woman is the latest suspect arrested by federal authorities in connection with a crackdown on insider trading. 43-year-old winifred jiau was taken into custody yesterday in fremont. she was charged with securities fraud in connection with allegedly providing detailed earnings information about a number of publicly traded companies. those firms include marvel technology group and individual

'ya. she is set to appear monday for a bail hearing in san francisco federal court. 65 has come up with an explanation for the users encountered last week. the company is blaming the 24 hour crash on a software glitch. skype's chief information is officer said today the problem stemmed from a version of software for computers running windows. a new poll shows baby boomers by a ratio of two to one say they don't believe they'll be able to depend on medicare throughout retirement this. comes as the first baby boomer will be old enough to qualify for medicare beginning january1st. 43% say they don't expect to be able to depend on medicare forever. 20% believe their medicare is secure. the remainder have nixed feelings. two top university researchers today made a plea for more funds to find a cause and treatment for epilepsy. professors from st. louis university and clem 'ya university say 50 million people worldwide suffer from

tough times sometimes call for creative solutions. and tonight we have one that is right up there. the problem, how to get more food donated to a local food bank. the solution, trade food for medical marijuana. robert honda is live with the report. >> reporter: the second harvest food bank provides food future about 50,000 people every month. and this holiday season a local medical marijuana dispensary helped the food bank meet the high demand. melody is a patient at granny's melodies pens roy in so cal. but from november until christmas eve they got a complimentary pre-rolled marijuana joint for every four cans up to three joints a day.

soon be headed. >> unchartered territory, and he's someone who should know, next at 6. weather-wise, we're seeing the very changes we talked about yesterday. they were dryer but it's getting wind out there. >> yes a good portion of the bay area windy. that's the case over the next two to four hours, the winds tomorrow night as bad, probably 10 to 20 miles an hour. right now live storm-tracker 2, no major storms out there. we do have cool showers up on the north coast around eureka and crescent city. you can see some of the current wind speeds sustained out at concord around 23 miles an hour. move to closer to san jose, sustained out at west around 21 miles an hour. is so still gusty conditions for this evening. that will be part of our short- term forecast. so here's the plan for tonight. we do have this with partly cloudy skies, gusty winds. for tomorrow, thursday, partly to mostly cloudy skies and then the weekend clouds and sun and possibility of a few showers, timing coming up in just a bit. remember yesterday at this time

we had the heavy rainfall, gusty winds moving across the bay area. that with the passage of the frontal system east and today we just had primarily just a few lingering clouds at least for thursday, clouds and sun the possibility of a few sprinkles with moisture moves in from the north but the next system that could be approaching our line on friday. the cloud cover on the increase and we bring in the chance of a few showers, especially for friday evening. so we'll be watching out. only a chance right now but something will continue to watch. in fact, here's our forecast model. not enough to show you tomorrow morning. you about see into the afternoon hours we do bring in the possibility of a few sprinkles, nothing major. but still some scattered cloud for your thursday. friday morning should be dry. but then we'll put this into the afternoon hours. you'll see what happens. we bring in the chance of more rainshowers for late friday afternoon into the evening hours. for tomorrow morning, primarily in the cool side, low 30s to lower 40s at 7:00, then by 12:00 47 to 52 degrees. sun-cloud mix. by 3:00, scattered clouds, low

there will be dui checkpoints all around the city. the entertainment commission is working with police to make sure nightclubs don't serve alcohol to customers who are already drunk. it's almost time for that new year's day practice killings known as the tournament of roses parade. and this event will include floats dedicated to the first responders of the september 11th attacks. >> from just cutting a seed to putting roses on to putting the eagle head on, this is america's float and to see everybody come out and have the compassion to remember our heroes is definitely a dream come true for me and i appreciate everybody out here today. >> and as you can see, volunteers were already hard at work on the floats that will grace the streets of pasadena in the 122nd rose bowl parade. and as the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaches, many of those entries will honor the firefighters, police officers and others who raced to the world trade center to help the victims. float organizers say everyone
