stabbed shortly before 4:00 it afternoon. police say three officers entered the home and saw a man holding what appears to be a knife or some sort of weapon. they asked him to put down the weapon but that instead the man approached them. police say that's when they opened fire. it's unclear at this point how many of the officers fired or how many shots were fired. the stabbing suspect has been taken to the hospital where he is suffering from life- threatening injuries. the woman who was stabbed was treated here at the scene and released. at this point, it's unclear what the relationship is between the woman who called police and the stabbing suspect. there are still many unanswered questions. police tell us they will be here for hours to investigate this incident. we will bring you the latest at 10. amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. to a frantic accept under in the sierra. a snowboarder has been missing since last night and rescue crews are having a hard time

getting over the mountain to search for her. ken pritchett has hour report from alpine meadows. >> reporter: this is video of search and rescue teams this morning as they prepare to search the backcountry on skis and snowshoes for the snowboarder missing since 1:30 yesterday afternoon. >> the weather has been a big factor in the search. the high winds, the avalanche hazards, and heavy snow has really present us from using tools we can use. >> those search teams stayed in the treacherous backcountry overnight and through most of today. willis is an intermediate skier who left the boundaries. >> i think that her friends and her the intent was to snowboard down and circle back around. but one fortunately that wane the case. >> search teams did find tracks but they were erased by the blowing snow, with such harsh conditions more than 2 feet of snow, survival overnight might seem improbable but there is reason for hope.

>> we have had many searches out here, many incidents where people have been out in the conditions for four or five, six days. >> the sheriff's department says a lot of factors come into play. did she create a snow cave or find out other shelter? is the area protected from the wind? authorities say willis had warm clothing and a helmet and basic knowledge of survival skills. her family is also concerned because she suffers from epilepsy. a family outing turns deadly in the north bay. a grandmother was killed by a tree that came crashing down on the tent she and her granddaughter were staying in at at safari west animal preserve. we have the story. ali. >> reporter: it was sunny today but last night guests staying overnight at the safari west preserve had to deal with driving rain and strong storm winds. that weather led to the death of a woman who was vacationing there with her young

granddaughter. this is what is left of the tent 70-year-old gayle falgoust was staying in. she was reading in bed last night. her 7-year-old granddaughter was playing on the floor. before 9, winds uprooted a 100- year-old oak tree nearby and it came crashing down on the tent. a father and son staying next door were the first to respond. >> they heard the trie tree come down and heard screaming. and when they saw what happened used a pair of scissors to cut into the tent. got the 7-year-old girl out and stayed with the grandmother until she pass snead the 7-year- old girl was not physically hurt. by mid-morning they she was reunited with her parents and crews had sawed apart the tree. >> it's a horrible thing that happens. we're devastated. >> falgoust came on monday as part of a four day group excursion. 18 people were on the trip and was organized for grandmothers and their grandchildren. rosalyn and her grandson were also with the group.

rosa down to rohnert park the tonight the right land will be closed starting at 9:00 and tomorrow night the left lane will be closed. crucifixed a major pothole in the same area earlier this week. caltrans is reminding drivers slow down when you see the zone to keep workers safe. many people spend today cleaning up what the weather brought down in the last 24 hours. trees and power poles were toppled throughout the bay area. ktvu's christian kasdin has our report from oakland. >> reporter: jack spent a good part of his day pruning the tree he watched fall on his home. >> i was actually coming back from walking my dog and saw the tree fall. it was a very slow be relaxed fall, and it came to rest on our garage no the tree pulled down the power lines and transformers and snapped the top off this pole. neighbors who were without power today say they noticed the tree leaning at a dangerous

angle months ago and warned the city. they city workers came out and marked the tree with this x. the workers never returned to cut it down. >> we were hoping they cut it before the incident just happened. but it looks like with all the rain and all the moisture and wind today, finally came down. >> despite today's accident he knows that for a cash-strapped city like oakland, tree removal is a relatively low priority. >> well, the city has many responsibilities. fire, police, et cetera. and these are hard times. so i'm glad -- it appears there's no substantial damage. >> and that was christian kasdin reporting. pg&e crews on the scene in oakland should be wrapping up any time now. just in time for city workers to cut up that tree and get it out of the way. and clear the road. a cattle truck driver any otherlily missed being injured

there afternoon when a huge tree crashed on his truck. the driver was in the trailer part of the truck getting ready to load cattle when the tree fell and crushed the cab. firefighters say they were dealing with high wind accidents all day including other fallen trees and downed power lines. high winds on the coast uprooted a large tree in this area. a gas line was snapped. pg&e crews capped off the leaking fumes. they made quick repairs and were evacuations necessary. >> we're live in pacifica. it was rough out there. >> you bet it was. you just saw the reported had to struggle to stay up right during her story today about the winds at noon. high winds also turned powerful waves and battered the shoreline most of this day. water streaming out of two manholes flooded an intersection today. our crew shot this video at 83rd and iowa street.

smoke inhalation. the fire district says an electric blanket was likely the source of the fire. the fire experts say there are precautions you should take when using electric blankets. unplug it when it's not being used. replace older models with newer ones and make sure your blankets have fail-safe devices in the event of short circuit. police are investigating the death of a man found shot in his home overnight. the coroner tells us the victim is fly-year-old robert florence. police say they were called to an apartment on wayne court about 2 this morning and found him suffering from several gunshot wound. he was taken to stanford hospital, where he later died. in san jose, police are trying to sort out a chain event that left two people with bullet wounds in a police officer with an injured leg. all started with a home- invasion robbery last night at what police say was a marijuana grow house on locust street. officers later approached a man who they thought might be linked to that robbery. they say the man jumped into a car and the car female driver

allegedly steered the car right toward an or. he fired a shot that hit the passenger in the leg, the car sped away. the man with the leg wound was later found and arrested. >> trying to determine whether or not all these cases are connected, or if we're dealing with two separate incidents with two separate suspects. >> as for the other injuries, the victim of the home invasion has a non-life-threatening bullet wound from a robber and a police officer hurt his leg jumping out of the wave of the car that tried to hit him. a violent night in san francisco, first an 18-year-old man in bayview was shot and killed last night. police say the shooting may be gang-related. then between 7 last night and 2:00 this morning, there were nine robberies and an attempted robberies across the city. some victims were threatened were guns, others with violence. at this point no indication the attacks are connected. mayor newsom announced a big project today called the better market street project. it's supposed to transform

parts every market street. planners say the changes will attract more people to visit the area. we were supposed to know by friday whether next america's cup will be held. san francisco, italy or rhode island. but now rhode island is saying not so fast! the top economic development official there says the state won't be ready to commit to the race until after a december 31st deadline set by the team selecting the host city. the official says it will take rhode island a week or two to figure out how much it would cost to get newport's park ready. no word on whether the team will hold off on its decision. obviously, i guess, stay tuned. costing more gas and could prices go even higher? the story coming up. >> yesterday's major storm has moved out but we still have a cool blustery evening. coming up the area that will drop into the low 30s overnight and the timing of another storm that is developing in the pacific.

it's the time of year when corks pop and champagne is poured in this year winemakers have extra reason to celebrate. nielsen research found that champagne sales are up 12% across the country, and sparkling wine sales are up 8%. north bay winemakers agree that their economy is improving. >> our numbers with good. our 2009 numbers were up from 2008, and 2010 is up from last year. and i know a lot of folks are rethinking their spending and we're pleased with when we're seeing here. >> another winery says exports are up 200%. as for retailers, san francisco's jug shop says christmas sales were fine and it's expecting to ring up even more champagne sales for new year's. how does this sound, $5 for

a gallon of gas? at least one expert says it can happen. rob is live with the unsettling story. >> reporter: at this 76 station, a gallon of regular is going for $3.33. it's not your imagination. that's the highest prices have been in the california in the past two years. this worker was loading up here. and heading out to make his afternoon deliveries. but hitting the road even just around this city is becoming a high cost proposition to this small business. >> when a driver makes a mistake and goes a mile out of his way igg go, oh, my gosh, it's real money! i'm a businessperson, the bottom line is my paycheck. >> the average cost of gas in the bay area is fine to 10 cents higher than this date last year. the last time gas was this expensive was in october of

2008. >> it's been overall global demand and investors are driving where the prices are going. >> one former oil executive is predicting increases to $5 a gallon in 2012. some dispute that. gas prices should continue inching northward. >> in the next few weeks prize will likely not vacillate too much, they may gun a couple sent here and there in the first few weeks of 2011. >> after that, though, things will most likely change and prices will likely start going up. >> despite the higher prices, gas stations were busy today but the customers weren't happy. >> you know, it makes me think about should i ride the bus to work, should i ride my bike? >> still have on drive the car. still have to visit my clients. >> on the bright side, gas prices aren't even close to the all time highs of $4.60, which is what californians were paying two years ago.

it was a good day for stocks. wall street remained on pace to have the best december in 20 years. it was another day of light trading just ahead of the new year. the blizzard of 2012 cost retailers a lot of money. according to shopper track. the big storm delayed about a billion dollars in spend, 10% of the usual outlet right after christmas. the retail pollster estimates foot traffic dropped more than 11% on sunday and almost 14% on monday. even so, shopper track says overhaul holiday shopping is up 4%. and the clean-up continues in the northeast. northbound's mayor admits the city was overwhelmed by sunday's blizzard that dumped 20 inches of snow on manhattan. people outside of manhattan have been furious that the snowplows have been so slow getting to their streets. and stranded passengers are also complaining the airlines were overwhelmed this week.

saying the phones have been jammed when they tried to call. recession cutbacks have not only trimmed the number of flights but the number of customer service agents available. today travel is getting back to normal with some delays as the airlines try to get caught up with their schedules. looks like amazon is trying to eliminate the hassle of what returning gifts to convert unwanted items. we found some items that some people may want to avoid. they say they've patented a method to let people exchange gifts for section they do want even before they get the gift. they also offer gift cards. let's turn to weather. mark is here to talk about some changes we're about to see. >> that's right. we started to cool off and get ready for a very chilly night 42 tomorrow morning. right now on live storm-tracker 2. you see primarily a few rainshowers north of here's the closer inspection of the bay area and we do have a few

sprinkles, right around the bay but nothing too significant. what is significant the wind and these are some current wind reports towards san francisco and oakland. sustained for 15 to 21 miles an hour. gusting to right around 30 miles an hour. overnight lows tomorrow morning, on the cold side. coolest location in the lower 30s for santa rosa and napa. san francisco at 42 and 3742. we do have partly cloudy skies and some gusty winds. tomorrow some scattered clouds. weekend forecast, sun-cloud mix and we bring in shower chances. here's the satellite. you can see old storm system moving out to the east and we do have development up here. this will be the factor as we head into thursday. so for tomorrow, sun-cloud mix and possibly a few sprinkles. we have that northerly flow in place that could transport some clouds and possibly sprinkle closer to the bay area. now here's our next storm system approaching our coastline for friday. the clouds will be on the increase and we brain in the chance of showers, especially by friday night. the timing not so get.

but it's only a chance now. here's our forecast model. tomorrow morning it's 7:00, not a lot of coverage to show you. clouds and possibly a sprinkle or two across the bay area. friday morning, it will be dry but then look what happened into the afternoon hours. this particular forecast showing you increasing rain chances, especially by late friday afternoon and into evening hours. for tomorrow morning, on the cool side, 32 to 42 degrees. then by 12:00, upper 40s to lower 50s with the sun-cloud mix. and then by 3:00, temperatures primarily in the lower 50s, winds tomorrow into the as bad, primarily 15 to 20 miles an hour. here's the numbers. we're showing you lower 50s for afternoon highs. san jose 54. san mateo, 53. and a look ahead. your 5-day forecast we bring in the other rain cloud for friday. once again it's a chance especially for friday night. we'll hold on to the shower chance in saturday, mostly for the morning hours. the rest of the weekend should be dry. by sunday with warming temperatures and probably monday deal with low clouds and fog. but just wanted to bundle up

for tonight. >> thank you, mark. northern california salmon population appears to be making a comeback. new figures show a four-fold increase in the eel river salmon population compared to last year. the population is declined in recent years promming a ban on commercial fishing. a federal report found 30 reasons for the population's decline, including low food supply and manmade problems. pleas to get people to donate food. one offer had donations pouring in. coming up next, marijuana for food!

a little marijuana is going a long way for one santa cruz counsel food bank. a medical marijuana dispensary was able to raise 11,000 pounds of food for the food bank with a unique promotion. patients received a free joint for every four cans every food donated. second harvest says they raised four times as much food as the average small business. >> it worked like a charm. it just -- people started
