6:31 am
building here on 82nd avenue had had their power turned off on december 2nd. so what they apparently did was take extension cords and were routeing power from a different unit into their apartment. they believe it's through those extension cords that this fire started. and that is what led to the fire that led to the deaths of these three people. you're looking at the second floor of this building. two windows in front are actually bedroom windows. all three victims who died were found in the bedroom on the right. we want to show you video of the flames that came out of those windows. firefighters say when they got here they found heavy fire in the living room but then the fire flashed over into the bedroom moments after arriving. neighbors helped pull a 7-year- old little girl out of the building to safety, but her mother, 3-year-old sister and male friend who apparently live there all died in the fire. >> we found all three patients in the one room, in a bedroom, and they were in very close

proximity. i'm going to assume they were overcome by the smoke. that's normally what happens in a case like this. we did not find any working smoke detectors anywhere. that could have been a contributing factor. >> reporter: the fire was mostly contained to the one upper apartment. but the smoke was so heavy that two women who lived in the back upper floor unit, a 59-year-old woman and her daughter, actually jumped from their second floor window to try to escape. they are in the hospital at this hour with leg injuries. now the tenants in the bottom floor unit in the front are apparently on vacation. they weren't home. in the back of the building in the fourth unit a bottom youtube where there's a family of four. this is video as they left the scene just a bit ago. a woman, her 20-year-old son, 15-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter. they were able to get out safely. at this point there was a big question about who was supposed to be in the building and who was not. there is an issue of this building being foreclosed upon. there's this issue of these

victims routeing power from different units. that is one of those things investigators are looking into. but at this point it appears this was simply an accidental fire but a fire that was caused by extension cords and a building that did not have smoke detectors. obviously the story is continuing to develop. we'll bring you any developments as we get them to you. live in oakland, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. all right. thank you, collude en. 62:00. oakland police investigating an officer-involved shooting this morning. tara moriarty has more on this story. >> reporter: one person is dead, another wounded and now police are trying to figure out exactly how it all unfolded. but we do know that the investigation here at the scene actually wrapped up about two hours ago. now oakland police are actually handling this investigation, but it was a san leandro police officer who pulled the trigger. why? i think this sign right here
6:34 am
explains it all. we are on the border of san leandro and oakland. our police sources tell us that the deadly shooting started as a car chase in san leandro but ended in oakland. a man and a woman were allegedly driving a stolen jaguar and led san leandro authorities on a brief chase. once they crossed the intersection of bancroft and durant, it becomes oakland. happened last night about 10:30. witnesses say the jaguar skidded. you can see chalk marks outlining the path there. it crashed into a parked car. that is when the suspects got out and gunfire erupted. neighbors tell us they heard at least nine shots. and we are told that the female suspect was shot and killed by a male officer. the male suspect was also wounded but suffered non-life threatening injuries. now oakland detectives are handling the investigation as we mentioned since technically the shooting happened in their city. once again it is only steps.
6:35 am
right now i'm standing in san leandro but if i walk over the street this is oakland. we are told this chase only lasted for a couple of minutes. as far as the suspects go, police have not released their names. nor have they released the name of the officer involved. we're here live in oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 6:34. san francisco police chief is holding a community meeting tonight. the subject is yesterday's officer-involved shooting where police shot and killed a man accused of stabbing a teenage girl. this happened around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. police say they were called to the scene of a party involving lots of young people. after a 15-year-old girl phoned in saying she'd been stabbed. three officers entered the home when police arrived. >> met the suspect inside and the suspect had some type of weapon possibly a knife. officers asked the suspect to put down the knife.
