tampered with evidence and cases. we believe that that isn't the case at this point. >> reporter: district attorney harris handed the case over to the attorney general in april hoping to avoid a conflict of interest. >> criminal charges were filed in this case. i would imagine that it would be very embarrasses for both the district attorney and the police department. because they would have to answer for the lapses in their own investigation. now the district attorney declined comment this evening about the maddon case. debra maddon still faces federal charges in san mateo county. david stevenson, ktvu news. palo alto police are investigating a bus accident that left one woman dead. it happened at about 6:30 this morning. witnesses tell ktvu news that the bus driver may not have

seen the woman. 52-year-old sheina barker as she has crossed the street. paramedics took the driver to the hospital on problems stemming from hyper tension. and a fiery crash closed i10 this afternoon. the coroner tells us 66-year- old sanchez of hayward was killed. one passenger was flown to the hospital with major injuries. and sheriff deputy says willis may have crashed into a tree. she waslast seen saturday morning while skiing. >> sometime after day one she

succumbed to her injuries. severe economic hardships played a role in a tragedy. rob roth live at the scene of the fire with details. >> reporter: here at this apartment building you can see the burned out windows where firefighters say they found to three victims. in the driveway sits a memorial to those who died. neighbors say the early morning fire was intense. the smoke even worse. a mother and daughter escaped by shimmying down a blanket to stairs. a 7-year-old girl was rescued by a family friend who was living there. >> i saw the fire, the little girl is coming down from the stairs. and i just told them to open the door, she told me, my mother and my sister are inside

the house. >> reporter: that man went back in for the others, fire officials found the bodies of that man, the 70-year-old girl's mother and her 3-year- old sister. fire officials say pg & e had shut off the electricity earlier this month. >> an extension cord has been run from of the unit and that's what started the fire. >> reporter: the mother lost her job as a housekeeper a month ago and the family's father is being held by i.c.e. and facing deportation to el salvado. firefighterses say there were no smoke alarms in the building. reporting from oakland, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. we have had three deadly officer involved shootings in just 20 hours here in the bay

area. all in different cities, all for different reasons. between 4:00 p.m. yesterday and 9:00 this morning, officers shot three people. the first happened yesterday afternoon in san francisco, then late last night san leandro police shot and killed a woman in oakland. this morning in hayward there was another deadly shooting. the hayward officer was responding to a disturbance involving a dispute between a landlord and a tenant. it happened just before 9:00 p.m. in a home on depot road. the suspect pulled out a weapon and the officer feared for his own safety and opened fire. the officer has been placed on administrative leave while that shooting is invest gaited. back now - - while that shooting is investigated. back now to that shooting in oakland. john sasaki is live from oakland where the shooting actually happened, john. >> reporter: frank we met friends of the the suspect late this afternoon and they are devastated.

here you can see where the suspect's vehicle crashed into this car and over on the ground there you can see shards of glass from the windows shut out by police. the suspects were in this jaguar which police say had been stolen. officers chased it until it crashed. one officer was concerned for his partner's safety because he was behind the suspect's car. >> the driver of the suspect vehicle began to rev the engine, the tires were smoking. >> reporter: it appears the tire's spun so fast it dug into the pavement. >> our officers gave numerous commands for the driver to stop, those requests were denied. our officer then discharged his weapon striking the suspect. >> reporter: but a witness said the shooting was unjustified. >> her back end hit my car. >> then there's -- >> in front of her. >> right in front of her. she can't go any where even if she tried. you can't go any where if you try.

then you have officers off the car and they say get off the car, twice and they began shooting. >> reporter: the chase started at this liquor store where the passenger had stolen a case of beer. six women arrived at the crash scene to bring flowers and pray for their friend. shay say they once lived with her in a half way house recovering from alcohol abuse. >> i don't believe she would do anything like that. >> reporter: live in oakland, i'm john sasaki channel 2 news. across the bay, san francisco officials are holding a meeting after an officer shot a little girl. police entered the home and coronerred the suspect. they say he then came toward officers and that the officers

then opened fire. they say police chief george gascone had a history of mental illness. >> apparently he reacts very violently to noises. there were kids that were playing and making a lot of noise. and apparently he reacted to that. >> reporter: chief gascone says the preliminary investigation shows the officers reacted accurately. the little girl that was stabbed is recovering. officials say they are ready for tomorrow night meaning it could be a very busy night. police do suggest if you are going into the city, take public transportation. on new year's day, there will be a special race. organizers of the annual data breakers day will be celebrating the day with a

special ceremonial run. runners from the original group, including st. mary's college and the ymca will be taking part. the run marks the opening of the general registration for may's beta breakers. this year's race will be limited to 50,000 people. over in sacramento they are getting ready for governor elect jerry brown's inauguration. technical crews tested facilities that will have to accommodate hundreds of photographers and reporters. governor elect jerry brown is planning a low key event. >> he understands the public is

not in the mood for a big celebration. -- the deal is valued up to $66 and it only applies to midweek travel. the labor department is reporting a sharp drop in first time claims for unemployment benefits last week. figures show first time applications fell by 34,000 to 3,088,000. that is the lowest level in about 2.5 years. california has seen the biggest drop due to fewer lay offs in agriculture. the positive news in the job front didn't give stocks a boost today. the stocks were low, the dow fell almost 15 points. the nasdaq was off about four

points closing at 2,663. here in the santa cruz mountains, water officials are checking the creek after a truck spilled fuel while it was dangling from an overpass. not something you see around here very often. black ice. we may see it tomorrow morning as well. what you can do to stay safe. and we continue to track a weather system offshore, coming up the timing and the rainfall intensity, we'll have that in your full forecast coming up in just a bit.

conditions this morning. black ice formed on roadways causing spin outs leading to several accidents in the south bay. officials are warning officers to take special precautions. >> when the temperatures get below 40, especially now my car says 33 degrees out there. when it gets this cold you have to driver careful. get off the accelerator. the cold overnight temperatures are expected to continue tomorrow. and the california highway patrol says that black ice caused a massive traffic accident this morning in the santa cruz mountains. where three vehicles crashed spilling diesel fuel into a creek and forcing a driver to escape from a truck that was dangling from an overpass. ktvu's robert handa has the story. >> reporter: people out here have to deal with rain, snow

and black ice. and today they all came together in a tragic story. a near by resident tom riley took this picture after the truck slid off the overpass and hung on the railing. 150feet above sionic creek. >> it sounded like a stick of dynamite went off, it was extremely loud. >> instead of slow down, she hit the gas and hit my truck. i went around her because my truck was sliding like this in slow motion. and the truck went forward. it's all dark, all the branches, i said wait i need to get out of here. >> reporter: you were teetering on the edge of the railing. >> hanging, with my seat belt. i took off my seat belt. then i climbed to the box. >> reporter: traffic was detoured for about five hours.

officials say about 80-gallons of diesel fuel spilled. a source of drinking water for water companies but not today. >> i don't believe they are taking water at the creek at this time because of the high flow. >> reporter: water companies and fish and game examine scionic lake, the driver says he will spend the holiday thinking about the view he had dangling over the creek. >> i feel like i got a second chance. i said, i don't want to die here. >> reporter: they say the coast guard and over agencies have been contacted. live in the santa cruz mountains, robert handa, ktvu news. in pacifica, another large chunk fell off the edge of a cliff. pacific officials say they've been waiting for the buildings

owners to act but the work has essentially come to a halt. a representative says insurance money hasn't come through and that there's a midst of dealing with legal issues. >> the owners are not going to do anything until the litigation is really over. and they decide just exactly what happened, what didn't happen. >> reporter: the city says it is monitoring the situation and say they will act quickly if people or public property are in imminent danger. two beaches in san mateo will be closed until at least monday. marina lagoon and lake shore park are both closed due to high levels of contamination. they were closed on december 22nd and will remain off limits until further testing can be conducted which won't happen until next monday. we have quite a story to share after a pregnant cow had to be rescued after falling

into a wooden well. sheriff's deputies responded and found the cow floating in the water. crews brought a pump to drain the thousands of gallons out of the pond to remove the cow. >> he saw she was okay. he gave her an injection of antibiotics. >> reporter: the cow and the calf will be kept as pets. our chief meteorologist is off tonight. mark tamayo is filling in. cold and chilly tonight. >> a front coming into the area, the big headline very cold numbers out there. coolest locations eventually tomorrow into the upper 20s. right now the maps on live storm tracker 2. a few high clouds associated with the next storm out in the pacific.

night across the region and you thought this morning was cold, tomorrow morning even a little cooler. >> thanks, mark. people in southern california just can't seem to get a break. the latest round of rain in los angeles has been followed by chilly winds with gusts up to 40 miles per hour. but there are no reports of new damage or risks of more mud slides. residents are still cleaning up from last week's rain and mud slides. workers have used more than 100,000 bags to keep rain from creating mud slides. -- no word yet from the white house on that request. the woman's basketball team could make history tonight with a win. >> why one video game company is telling parents don't let some of your children play
