they are able to invide without having to drive. >> a lot of noise, make it loud for new year's. >> reporter: police say they will not tolerate any open containers. they will also be stationed near many nightclubs. now for a look at what's going on in the south bay. we go to reporter janine de la vega in san jose. >> reporter: we're across the street from christmas in the park. there are lots of people out here. especially families. they are buying hot chocolate and churros from vendors and they are enjoying the rides. this is just one way they are celebrating the new year. this delivery truck spent the day making deliveries to

restaurants and nightclubs. one of those is lounge bar. there will be d.j., food and many drinks. many people want to stay local rather than traveling to san francisco. >> we can take the light rail to downtown and we don't have to drive and avoid all the traffic. >> reporter: some are opts to stay home and throw house parties. we found a lot of people on didi supply store. >> we're going to have fresh crab and lots of champagne. there's going to be about 20 of us. it's going to be a really nice kind of evening. >> reporter: many people will head downtown. the ice skating rink is open until 10 tonight, christmas in the park and the rides will be open just past midnight. but what is the weather going to be like tonight? and for that we go to mark tamayo in our weather center, mark. >> reporter: you may notice an increase in the clouds throughout the day. those clouds will eventually

cross into different jurisdictions to seek out any impaired drivers. >> they're able to focus strictly on dui issues driving. >> reporter: in san francisco there will be some sobriety check points including one in eighth and fulsome street in the city. a recent study says tomorrow new year's day, underage drinkers are 2.5 times more likely to go to the emergency room. the causes, over consumption of alcohol and alcohol involved crashes. there's no reason for anyone to get behind the wheel after they've been drinking tonight. there are easy options to get home safely. to get a list of get home safe options, and a look at what's going on around the area, we have lots of information on our website just go to ktvu.com. we have breaking news now to report. the vallejo fire department is working a four alarm fire there in the city of vallejo. the fire started just about a half hour ago. now we do have a crew on the

way to the fire, as soon as we get new information about it we'll bring it to you. meanwhile the san jose police said that a homeowner shot a man today. the homeowner thought that man might be a burglar. it started about 4:00 this morning in the city's meridian neighborhood. the homeowner told them that he saw two men in his backyard and one had a handgun. police found a wounded 24-year- old man in the backyard. >> whatever possible, please contact your local law enforcement to help with energies. we're discouraging individuals from taking matters into their own hand. police say they found no gun or sign of a second suspect. the homeowner declined to make a statement, has been released until the district attorney decides what to do about the matter. more has to be done to keep the city of oakland safe. it was a ceremony to honor and remember all of the people

killed in oakland this year. ktvu's christien kafton was there today. >> reporter: and that crosses that did stand here today represented those killed in oakland over the past 12 months. this year there was 92. a 17% drop in homicides in oakland from the year 2009. but by all accounts there was still way too many. each one of these crosses marks the end of a life. the victims range in age from four months to 71 years old.

2010 has been a year of amazing stories both tragic and inspirational. the battle for same-sex battle, jerry brown and san francisco celebrated a world series. >> reporter: these highlights of 2010 are in no particular order expect that we end this piece on good news. >> reporter: september 9th. an explosion in san bruno rips apart a neighborhood, a story that continues to affect displaced families and all californians. dozens of homes were destroyed and eight people died after a pg & e pipeline exploded. questions linger about the cause and the safety of similar pipelines. there were nights of civil unrest in oakland stemming from the mehserle case. in july, the former b.a.r.t. officer was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for the 2009 new year's shooting of oscar grant.

his sentencing in november to two years raised new protest by those who considered the sentence too lenient. demonstrations of a jubilien rang in san francisco after a judge ruled prop eight unconstitutional. but the victory was short lived. and for sports fan, this victory may be the story of 2010. the san. san francisco giants defeated the texas rangers, what followed was an unprecedented postgame celebration. two days later, hundreds of thousands of people filled the

streets of san francisco to share in the glory. perhaps the most amazing video of the year captured by ktvu was that the mavericks surf competition. i'm sure as a series of maverick waves demolish stages and knocked dozens of people off of their feet leaving several people injured, none of those injuries were life threatening. that is a brief look back at 2010 and we head into a new year. in the newsroom, ken pritchett. take a look back at the national big stories of 2010. the images that have captured our attention puts the famous people who died over the year go to ktvu.com and click a year in review tab. they may call it the monster pothole that will not go away. on monday caltrans said it would be repaired by tuesday. now we're learning that the

repairs will actually continue into the new year with lane closures on monday, tuesday and wednesday of next week on that highway to try to get the road shored up. just a minute ago we were talking about very modest inauguration? it was mark cuomo, the son of governor cuomo. and there's more coverage in the radar return. and as we back up the maps again, that activity will be swinging through the region. here is a look at the bay area forecast in general for tonight. tonight, more cloud cover. showering developing, weekend,

cool pattern sticks around and chance of some showers in the extended forecast, finally a dry weather pattern beginning to show up. here's the storm system we're watching for tonight and also into the weekend. the chance of showers and the highest chance will be for the morning hours. the next big event, that will move in sunday. especially for the morning hours on sunday. we could be talking about some moderate to heavy rainfall as that rain band moves in. here's our forecast model at midnight. plan on wet roadways and also carry the umbrella around for the activities for this morning. the chance for lingering showers, not a will the of activity here at 3:00 and 4:00. plenty of clouds in place. we still have to hold on to a chance. 5:00, 6:00 early sunday morning, we start to hold on to the possibility of an isolated

shower for sunday afternoon. for tomorrow morning, scattered showers at 7:00 for your bay area forecast. low to mid-40s, 40 to 45 degrees. late tomorrow night we should have this. a chance for some showers, 43 to 48. as we head into the mid- afternoon hours, 48 to 53 degrees and we still have to hold on to that chance but there should be plenty of breaks in the action for tomorrow afternoon. forecasted highs, upper 40s, still chilly up in the north bay. warmest locations in the 50s. your five day forecast as we do head into a 2011 and you will notice this weekend unsettled with shower chances. especially for saturday morning and into sunday morning. and if you want that dry break. looks like next week we could be talking about dry weather especially for tuesday and also into wednesday. we could use a break, thanks mark. a new law requires teenagers to be current on their whooping cough vaccines before enrolling in spring next fall. new legislation requires all teenage students to show proof

of a whooping cough or tdap booster shot before starting school. teenagers are particularly under scrutiny. most students were last immune niced between ages 4 and 6. a southern california company is recalling tens of thousands of pound of organic ground beef because of e.coli concerns. first class foods is recalling ground beef with number 18895. and were sold under the names organic harvest or harvest organic. it was shipped to seven states including california. and we have some pictures to show you after a kayaker

another live look at time square it is packed and people are cold. temperature here in the low 40s. you can bet there's a lot of body heat been generated by the expected 1 million people there tonight. if you're counting just about 2.5 hours to go before that famous ball drops. so we all know about the ball dropping in time square. there are some other not so famous new year's drops. here are some of the odder ones, at least two cities watch a pickle come down.

that's dillsburg pennsylvania and mount island indiana. in bethlehem, pennsylvania, peeps come down. this one weighs 100 pounds. in eastover, alabama a giant fleet. in key west a drag queen in a ruby slipper is dropped. interesting. >> looks like the warriors are ending 2010 on a very strong note. >> a rare matinee game back in carolina. nobody is going to take the warriors seriously until they can win on a semi regular basis at least out on the road and they did it against the bob cats in a matinee. curry back with charlotte in his -- where he went to college at davidson. homecoming goes well as you will see. curry going to the bucket. dropping in two of his 24 on the day. the warriors were able to move it pretty well against the bob cats. as you will see right here and
