a fire breaks out in san rafael and quickly spreads next door. more video straight ahead. things are already getting busier on the morning commute, we will tell you cold -- cold temperatures. i will haunt you. i will politically haunt you. >> the debate over san francisco's next mayor heats up as a front runner emerges. the morning news continues. good morning, to you. welcome to the middle of the week. i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. let's get a quick look at the weather and traffic. >> all right. low clouds and fog again. not every area has the fog. 30s and upper 20s.

hazy sunshine on the menu today. a few locations tough to breakthrough that fog. low 50s but san jose, morgan mill 50s to near 60 degrees. westbound highway 4 that traffic looks good. we will be checking in with with the antioch side to see how that is doing. so far so good. 280 and 101. topping our news right now we are following developing news in san rafael. firefighters are on the scene of a house fire in maywood way. jade hernandez joins us from san rafael. she just spoke to a fire chief. >> reporter: the battalion chief told us it could be seen from 580 when it broke out. it involved two homes this morning. th fire began shortly after 3:00. flames ignited inside of a vacant home and quickly spread next door. the second home had a couple

inside. the man and woman were able to get out safely, though. san rafael firefighters were able to put out flames in less than an hour. pg&e shut off power to both homes. we have been told by the fire chief this morning that the fire started in the garage of the first trilevel home and quickly spread next door. renovations were being done on that home. the fire is not suspicious in behavior. firefighters is assessing damage to the second home where a man and woman became alerted to flames. the couple noticed the fire next door. it did not extend into the fire next door yet. >> reporter: no one was hurt in this fire and fire investigate evers will still have -- and fire investigators will still have to determine the cause.

6:02. more drama in san francisco over who will be named the interim mayor. this after a row cushion 8.5 board of supervisors meeting with no vote. >> i haunt you. i will politically haunt you. for the biggest fumble in the history of san francisco politics. it's on like donkey kong. >> that was supervisor chris dalely lashing out of david chew in backing the supporter of ed lee. daley wanted chiu to side with the progressive supervisors. >> we make tough decisions all the time. this may with the most significant decision that any of us make in our political

careers. >> in the end the board scheduled a special meeting for three p p.m. this -- 3:00 p.m. this friday to hold that vote. ed lee has the required six votes. right now he's traveling in hong kong. even if the supervisors select lee on friday, it will be symbolic because mayor gavin newsom has not left his office. police are look for suspects in a horrifying shooting on an oakland street corner. investigators tell us six people were wounded last night on d street not far from international boulevard. five of the victims were gunned down on the street. the sixth victim was hit in the back of a stray bullet as he sat in his livingroom. it's not clear what lead up to the shooting but claudine wong

is live. overnight a separate seven- hour search came to a tragic conclusion on the rugged coast of sonoma county. the man that drove his motorcycle off of highway one has died. the chp says the motorcyclist made desperate 911 calls after the crash. the 48-year-old man told emergency dispatchers he had lost control of his harley davidson and landed in thick brush between the highway and ocean. that set off a massive search involving u.s. coast card helicopters. >> they tried to gps the telephone. we had three or four locations in the beginning. we tried every one of them and finally we just went on foot. >> search teams finally found the man's body last night in rough terrain 700 feet below the highway. the coroner has not released his name. our time now is 6:05.

wind out of the northwest. well, the tom cable era is over in oakland. the raiders fired their coach after a 17-27 record during his tenure. ktvu kraig debro is in oakland with more on the story. good morning, craig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. we are at the oakland raider store. it does not open until 10:00 a.m. but employees are starting to arrive. first tom cable. on monday when asked about the next head coaching position cable thought he would be able to take a couple of weeks to rest and reflect. on tuesday they chose not to renew his congress. the team went 8-8. the best since 2002. many people believed the season turned around in denver. the team score the 59 points. that is the highest on paper. on paper the firing was easy to

arriving for a prayer service just 20 minutes ago. this is a history making day. he will be sworn in on speaker. right now he is promising an aggressive 20-day push to undo president obama's agenda. now during her last news conference as speaker, san francisco congresswoman nancy pelosi said she had no regrets. >> actually, i don't look back i look forward and we look forward to as i said before being willing partner and solving the problems of the american people when our republican colleagues have positive solutions so again they will have a willing partner in solving problems to the american people. >> reporter: democrats are keeping control of the senate where today california democratic senator barbara boxer will be sworn in for her fourth term. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns. time now 6:16.

senator dianne feinstein will miss the beginning of the new congress. she will have knee replacement surgery today in san francisco. senator feinstein says during her three-week recovery period after the surgery she will not be able to travel to washington. she will be working from her home in san francisco. we are now hearing president obama may announce changes in his staff as early as friday. according to the sources, the president has narrowed down the list of candidates for white house chief of staff to two people. pete rouse and former clinton commerce secretary william daley and there is news that robert gibbs is moving on. he will become a spokesman and strategist for the president outside of the white house. we are getting hints now of what the new governor jerry brown's budget plan will contain when he unvails it on monday. in the governors first full day yesterday he met with local

leaders. he talked about transferring responsibility for state run programs over to the local level after that meeting the county representative said they were willing to take over services currently run by the state if they are given enough funding. a cross displayed at a california park is unconstitutional. this centers around a cross in san diego. this was erected in 1954 honoring korean war veterans. but they say the cross on public land promotes a specific religion. the case could go to the u.s. supreme court. a similar controversy over the cross on san francisco's mount davidson was resolved when the city sold the land and the cross to a private organization. the marin county board of supervisors has approved a one year moratorium on the pg&e smart meters. 50 people packed the board meeting but despite the unless

vote to oppose the moratorium pg&e says it will continue to install the devices. stating the public ewe fillty commission has -- utility commission has a decision of the moratorium not the smart meters. what is happening in contra costa county? >> well, dave and pam, traffic is moving along okay. it's getting busier in the central part of antioch. 680 is busier driving from concord to pleasant hill. getting out to the teleplay it seems -- toll plaza it seems okay. there is a little bit of a crowd developing. and this mornings commute along long the peninsula looks fine. heading down the southbound with no major problems and

good morning. traffic is moving along realtively well at the bay bridge. it seems to be crowding up yesterday. we will be watching the bridge and all the commutes coming up. >> thank you, sal. it may be cold out there. air quality officials are not asking you to burn wood this week. weather conditions tomorrow and friday can trap smoke near the ground causing unhealthy breezing conditions. it's not the spare the air alert. officials are not ruling out as conditions change. we do hope they will refrain from wood burning. the winter spare the air season

runs to february 28th. the ross valley school district will replace a track. kent middle school track was covered in sewage. a school official says the track is expected to be replaced as soon as february weather permitting. and members of a sonoma county church are asking for thieves to please return their sign. the sign outside of the church of christ vanished the week before christmas. it has been there for 25 years. church members say it will be too much to replace it. they are not interested in punishing the thief they just want their sign back. the battle over california's gay marriage ban is heading back to the court. they asked the supreme court to decide whether proposition 8 sponsors have the authority to defend the measure. it came up after federal

ktvu morning news i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. right now at 6:30 the red cross is helping a san rafael couple when the house caught fire just moments ago. jade hernandez is joining us live. she is in san rafael. she has the details. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. the couple is lucky she got out safely this morning. the driver could see smoke and flames. we cannot show you the damage from where you are. take a look at this. this is the fire that started earlier this morning. firefighters are not sure what caused the fire. they do know it started in the garage of one empty hope under going renovation and quickly spread to an occupied home next door. the couple inside of that home got out safely. both noticed fire and called for help. fire dispatch already received a call about flames. pg&e shut power off to homes. the fire began at 37 maywood

way and spread next door to 43 maywood way. fire investigators are looking indoors. unfortunately no one was hurt. there is significant damage to the first home. firefighters are assessing the damage of the second home. >> there was damage to the electrical lines in and around the original fire damage. we have red cross coming for the occupants next door. >> now again no one else was hurt this morning. the fire did effect those two homes on maywood way. firefighters were still putting out hot spots. fire investigators were going to try to determine the exact cause. reporting live from san rafael jade hernandez. this morning oakland police are looking for suspects in a horrifying shooting. there are six victims one an innocent man sitting inside his own home. ktvu claudine wong joins us

from oakland with the details. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, pam. we do have new information for you about this shooting that put six people in the hospital. we are at 89th and d street. the shots came from that van. that's where the shooters were apparently standing or sitting in a car. they were firing over in this direction on 89th avenue. witnesses are telling us it looks like this was a gunfight and one innocent bystander was caught in the cross fire. i want to show you three houses that were in the line of fire when all this happened. on each of the houses we found multiholes. some in windows some in holes. in one house a man was hit in the back by a stray bullet in his livingroom. he is in the hospital. outside on the street there were five more victims. police are trying to sort out their involvement. they are all men. standing in and around a car on 89th avenue when at least two suspects in a car started

firing on them. we just talked to a neighbor that was sleeping in the home where the gunmen started firing. she didn't see anything but heard the gunfight outside of her window. >> they got out of the car because they heard the door slams. they started shooting. they just got back in the car. >> reporter: you heard the door close again? >> yeah. usually when they just go in the car and you hear -- >> the squealing tires. >> no, they went slow. >> reporter: she also heard gunfire coming from two different directions. and believes the victims were firing back. six victims when all of this was over. others had wounds to their legs, arms and stomach. at least one victim was driven to highland hospital. at lastward, the conditions of the victims range from critical to stable. as you come back out here, we know the police when we got here on scene we are still

making diagrams and going back to the department. we know investigators were out here talking to all the neighbors. we will continue to get all the information for you. live in oakland claudine wong. time now 6:34. students at stanford are being warned by police walk in pairs following a terrifying attack on the campus. a man tried to grab a student as she walked across campus monday evening. he let her go when she fought back. at this point stanford police have a vague description of the attacker that is described as a man in his 40s. he's got brown hair with a mustache or goatee. thin build and was wearing a dark hooded jacket. a cell phone camera is giving us a new look at a controversial officer shooting. a passer by shot the video. it shows officers confronting a

man in a wheelchair. he just stabbed a police officer after slashing car tires. police chief george gascon says it does not show the whole story. >> the video is showing us the focus of the camera of an event and showing one point of view. we're not seeing what the officers are seeing. obviously we're not seeing what the officers are thinking about. >> potato appear -- this is the second officer involved shooting in the last week. a mountain lion siting is making people nervous. mountain lion was spotted in wood side last night. officials say if you are out there just avoid hiking or jogging in the area. when it's dark because that's when mountain lions are most active. uc president mark rudolph says they are not legally

obligated to raise the pensions of its highest paid executives. rudolph is addressing for the first time a letter written by dozens of top uc employees threatening a lawsuit. the executives all earn $245,000 a year saying uc agreed to lift a cap on their pensions. they had attorneys examine this issue. they concluded the employees are mistaken. more and more bay area travelers are riding the rails these days. amtrak reports business has been booming in recent months. apparently due to the improving economy. two routes serving bay area passengers are popular. they are the san jose to auburn. and the line that runs between oakland and bakersfield. time now 6:37. we are following developing news. this is happening now in castro

valley. they are working to cap a water main break on east castro boulevard. you are looking at video we just brought back. the water is causing a big mess for drivers in the area. we are trying to get you more information about all of this. be careful in that area. we will bring you an update on mornings on 2. for an update on the traffic conditions, let's check in with sal. >> all right. right now we are doing okay. we are get a little bit more crowded in some areas. as a matter of fact, if you are driving to the bay bridge, you can more of a crowd. no major problems but there is a crowd coming up as you get up to the middle of that parking lot which is no longer there. moving along and taking a look at northbound and southbound 880. yesterday we had a terrible day here. today is crowded. you can see an emergency vehicle ride through the area. nothing major when it comes through accidents.

and this morning's commute is okay and southbound 280 and northbound 280 on the right there looks good into the valley. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. we have clear skies for some. patchy fog and low clouds. upper 20s and 30s. it's a stable pattern and each day we are bringing the highs up a little bit. we have cold mornings. fog. near 60 for a high though. mountain view probably los altos and morgan hill. pattern again we get this in the winter time you can go a couple weeks without any hint of rain. there is one sign of rain. that will not be until next tuesday. fog or cold today tomorrow and probably into the weekend. then we will get a north westerly breeze. sonoma and kenwood are 29 degrees.

good morning to you. welcome back. oakland police are busy searching for suspects now after six people were shot and wounded last night on d street. one of the victims was an innocent victim hit by a stray bullet while sitting in his living room. in sonoma county a motorcyclist has now died. his harley went off a cliff. several police agencies were trying to locate this man after he made several frantic 911 calls for help yesterday afternoon. the new congress in

washington starts working today with a republican majority in the house. house republicans say that will make a repeal of health care reform one of their first votes. senate democrats say they plan to block that effort. it looks like an innocent christmas card from the white house. instead a holiday e-mail sent to law enforcement, military, and government workers were a scam. cyber criminals seem to target people involved in computer crime investigations. hackers were able to use the e- mail to collect sensitive law enforcement data. we are told no evidence that any classified evidence has been compromised. peoplelying along -- people living along australia flood ravaged coast is getting a break. after ten days of rain it could be a long time until the muddy mess dries up. 4,000 people had to be evacuated. more than 12,000 homes have

been damaged or destroyed. time now 6:45. federal prosecutors in new york are investigating whether plow workers took their time to plow away the snow. he received some video and these photographs showing truck drivers slacking on the job after last weeks big snowstorm. he sent that image to federal investigators. they say criminal prosecutors are possible. >> you have tolen -- you have stolen from the city. >> it took several days to plow the city streets after it dumped 20 inches of snow. immigration authorities are currently escorting a man to the bay area so he can attend the funeral of a three-year-old daughter. she died in a fire in oakland last thursday on 82nd street along with her mother and a man that was living in the

apartment. evan's seven-year-old sister survived. he will now be allowed to attend her funeral and discuss with authorities arrangements for the other daughter. this morning police in east palo alto are looking for the person that started a fire at city hall. it forced the cancellation of last nights city council meeting. fire started in a restroom trash bin late yesterday afternoon. smoke started pour into the lobby. investigators hope surveillance video will lead them to the arsonist. let's get you to where you need to go. sal says we are waking up. it's getting crowded out there; right? >> it is, dave and pam. they have watched this for a little bit and got their coffee and they are now out on the road. here in bay point it's not all that bad but in antioch it is already stop and go coming up

through the main part of antioch where it's a two lane section there. also the morning commute is okay as you are driving at the bay bridge. it seems a little better today than it was yesterday. still there is just a little bit of a crowd coming up to the middle of the freeway here. westbound 580 traffic looking okay as you drive up toward castro valley toward livermore. it looks like a lot of red on the freeway here. hayward already 680 interchange. there is a minor accident on the side. southbound 880. a couple of cars on the shoulder. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. good beginning this morning. temperatures 20s and 30s. we have areas of fog. what is new? once that burns off the fog begins to get lower and thicker toward the ground. watch out visibility can go to zero then you will clear it and
