well, good morning to you. welcome to moat mast. i'm dave -- welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. a couple is homeless a fterless after an early-morning fire -- homeless after an early- morning fire. jade hernandez is on the scene with an update. >> reporter: good morning. we received an update from the san rafael fire chief. he told us that fire investigators are now on scene this morning the. we want to show you the pictures of the two homes that caught fire overnight. fire investigators we know are

cole through the damage of the garage of the home on maywood way. the property was recently purchased and the new owner was renovating the property. the fire broke out at 3:00 a.m. and spread from the garage of that home quickly to the home right next door at 33 maywood way. the couple inside of 33 maywood way know noticed the flames and c alled 911. dispatch had already been n otified. pg&e show shut off power to both homes. no other homes were affected. the battalion chief spoke to us early had morning -- early this morning. >> this is on top of the hill, on top of the ridge. so we encourage all people, all residents, to have smoke

detectors. i'm not sure if the smoke detectors alerted the residents in the next-door house. >> reporter: the american red cross is assisting the couple without a place to stay this morning. the fire chief said they will continue to monitor hot spots all morning. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade. 7:02. overnight, a desperate s even- hour search came to a tragic conclusion on the rugged coast of sonoma county. just hours ago we learn a man who drove his motorcycle off highway 1 near jenner has died. the chp said the motorcyclist made some desperate cell phone calls immediately after the crash yesterday afternoon. the 48-year-old man immediately called his wife. he then called 911. he told emergency dispatchers, he lost control of his harley and had landed in some thick brush between the highway and the ocean but he couldn't tell them exactly where. that set off a massive search involving u.s. coast guard helicopters and several police

agencies. >> they tried to gps and finally we went on foot. >> search teams finally found the man's body in some rough terrain. several hundred feet below the highway. the coroner has not yet released his name. claudine wong is live in oakland and brings us all of the details on a continuing investigation involving a s hooting. >> reporter: good morning. at this point, the search is on for the gunman or gunmen who put these six people in the h ospital. at this point it does appear there's more than one. we can toe somehow -- we can show you the van. that's where police say the gunman were standing when the shots were fired. the victims were found on 89th avenue. if you take a look at the

glass, it's right before that stop sign marker o the ground. that's-- on the ground. there there is a sixth victim in all of this. it appears he was just caught on the crossfire. we took a look at the three houses on 89th. we did find bullet holes. police say one man, an innocent victim who just happened to be in his living room was hit by a stray bullet in the back. the other victims were all outside the house. one neighbor told us moments before the gunfire erupted. she heard a car drive up, two or three, and then she also b elieves the gunman fired back. >> you could hear them shooting and then, like, from a different angle is the shooting back. >> reporter: a lot of shots.

>> yeah. >> reporter: she also said after the gunfire stopped, she heard the car doors open again and then the car drive slowly away. it took some time for police to nick out how many victims were hit in this gunfight. one man was driven to the hospital by someone else. two other victims were found later. all in the hospital are listed as critical to stable. >> everyone we've talked to heard those shots fired. there were multiple shots. what we're gonna do is talk to a couple more neighbors out here and head to the police department. we know investigators were walk, -- working on this all night, chasing down leads. and we'll keep you updated on "mornings on 2." claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> 7:06. changes are coming to the silver and black. the raiders have cut head coach tom cable loose. the team announced yesterday, they would not exercise the t wo-year, $5 million option on

cable's contract which expired on sunday. this year, they went 8-8 without losing a game in their division. however, the raiders still didn't make the playoffs. this morning, we talked to fans who had a variety of opinions. >> i think cable did a pretty decent job with what he had to work with when he was here. but you have to move on sometimes. i think it's a good move. >> i think they should give him another chance, he's 8-8. he should have gotten another chance. >> cable coached the raiders to a 7-27 record since september of 2008 when he was promoted to head coach. several sources say al jackson will promote hugh jackson to head coach -- al davis will promote hugh jackson

to head coach. we have developing news coming from castro valley. crews are busy. they are trying to cap an early- morning water main break. what you are looking at is video we've received within the past hour. it's a mess. you can see right there, the water is causing a mess on the roadway. gurgling up there, the street is on the main drag if you drive in and out of castro valley. cleanup crews hope to have all of the automaticker removed from this busy roadwork. let's check in with sal to get an update on the rest of the commute. >> right now, traffic is moving along pretty well. it's slower in contra costa county. we're always checking highway 4 and as you drive up to the will lee pass grade. that's become heavier. also this morning we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. yesterday, it was busier.

there is a little bit of a backup, though. it's not quite as -- well, it's not quite as bad as it was yesterday. of course, we're always watching the hayward commute. southbound 880 at 92, they've cleared an accident from 92 there. it's gone. but traffic slow from a street heading doubt down to fremont. if you are driving in the south bay, for the most part it still looks like a decent commute. let's go to steve. all right. clearing skies. 20s, 30s. we have areas of fog but once that lift and burns off, a few locations will get in the upper 50s and 60s. but if the fog persists, it will be tough to get past 52, 53. fog, nights, morning. no change in that until s unday/monday. it seems to be getting lower and thicker. but until about 10:00 some of that hangs on. so the visibility can be a quarter mile or less. fog and cold with hazy

are participating in a ceremonial swearing in. outgoing speaker and c ongresswoman, nancy pelosi, is about to address this group. today she hands over her s peaker's gavel and barbara lee gives up her job as head of the black caucus as republicans take over the house. now, in a few hours, ohio republican congressman, john boehner, will be sworn in as speaker of the house. here he is arriving for a prayer service near the capitol this morning. he's planning a push for 20 days to undue president obama's agenda and repeal healthcare reform. i will have more on what he and pelosi are saying this morning in my next update, in about an hour. we're just hearing now that robert gibbs, the white house

spokesman, is moving on. incoming house speaker, john boehner, will make today's first investigation a social networking event. online viewers will be able to watch the house of representatives to republican control on the facebook page. this begins at 9:00 a.m. senator dianne feinstein will not be joining her $leagues for the start of the new congress today -- her colleagues for the part start of the new congress today that's because she's having knee surgery. she will be unable to travel to washington for a bit and will work from home. two chinese companies connected to the cosco busan

oil spill in the bay area, well, they've agreed to a multi- million dollar payout to bay area fishermen. the cosco busan crashed and spilled fuel in the bay back in 2007. $307million settlement will be split and attorneys are asking for a separate judgment on attorney costs and legal fees 7:18. the highway patrol is defending its decision to close the grapevine last weekend.

the storm dumped five to eight inches of snow on the i-5. it was shut down until about noon for about 24 hours. some say the storm was only minor and the highway should have remained open. but the chp says with the steep glades and heavy -- grades and the heavy holiday traffic, the closure was necessary. federal prosecutors are looking into reports that sanitation workers deliberately took their time to shovel snow to protest recent layoffs. one congressman took video and rwarded this and said criminal charges could be filed. if you show under for work and did not do your job and took a paycheck, you have stolen from the city.

the sanitation workers union say the claims are false. 7:19. well, pg&e says it will continue smartmeters in parts of marin county despite last night's vote by officials to approve a moratorium on smart meters. about 50 people packed the board of supervisors meeting y esterday. opposing the smartmeters. many are worried about what they believe is radiation coming from the devices. the state's public utilities commission has the authority over smartmeters so pg&e does not have to stop installing t hem. at least not yet. the marin county supervisors have also decided to delay a decision on whether or not to ban plastic bags at grocery stores. yesterday, the board decided to study the environmental impact of paper bags before deciding the fate of plastic bags. the supervisors will revisit and take up the issue again on january 25th. 7:20. a father is temporarily spared deportation but it's because of

investigators in east palo alto hope it will help them find the person who started a fire at city hall. it forced the cancellation of the meeting. it started yesterday in a trash bin. smoke began to pour into the first-floor lobby, forcing the evacuation of several dozen people. immigration authorities are currently escorting a man to the bay area so he can attend the funeral of his 3-year-old

daughter who died in an apartment fire in oakland last week. little yvonne benevidas died in the fire last thursday on 82nd street along with her mother and a man who was also living in the apartment. yvonne's 7-year-old sister survived. nelson, the father of the two girls, was scheduled to be d eported to el salvador. he will now be able to i tend yvonne's funeral. taxi pates in san francisco could be going up. the municipal transportation board agency agreed to formally consider a meter right hike. the last me rates were raised was eight years ago. cabs typically charge $2.25 a mile. the union of the cabdrivers says because of an increase in gas prices and living expenses and cab rental costs. it's harder for drivers to make a respectable wage. the says any taxi hike

should be moderate. no date has been scheduled to consider that rate increase. 7:24. this morning, no major problems are being reported on highway 101 in sonoma county where caltrans reopened lanes that were closed because of a major pothole repair project. crews closed the southbound lanes at rohnert. it's a conation of a project that started last month. 7:24. let's see if everybody is b ehaving on the roads. how is it looking, sal? >> tori just asked me during the message system and i will answer the whole world and tori and dave, the southbound roadwork that we just showed has been slowing traffic, although they've been -- they've tried to do a lot of it off-peak time. it's still a little bit slow through rohnert park and this week it's been getting bussier

let's take a look at -- busier. let's take a look at 880 t raffic. yesterday was terrible. today it's much better as drive through oakland. also, the morning commute looks okay at the toll plaza. it seems better than it was yesterday. yesterday, we had a backup to the overcrossing. today it's about ten minutes or so, maybe a little bit less than that. the morning commute looks okay. northbound 280 still looking good. we don't have too much going on yet. now, let's go to steve. areas of fog. cold temperatures, 20s and 30s. we'll have mostly sunny skies. a little band of high clouds kind of coming down. but no big deal. some of that fog is working down the ground. once it burns off, things should be good to go.

welcome back. six people were wounded on "d" street. five victims were gunned down on the street. the sixth victim was hit in the back by a stray but as he sat in his own living room. still not clear what led up to the shooting. claudine wong has been on the story all morning. she'll have more details coming up at 8:00. a san rafael police officer has been placed on administrative leave after being arrested on suspicion of threatening a man with a gun. police say officer michael a gustas got into an argument with a man at a petaluma restaurant on new year's eve and pulled out a handgun. if prosecutors charge him with assault with a deadly

weaponnen, he could face up to -- weapon, he -- he could face prison time. a cell phone is giving us a controversial look at a s hooting. officers were confronting a man in a wheelchair late morning. investigators say he had just stabbed a police officer after slashing some car tires. police chief george gascon says this video does not tell the whole story. >> the video showing us the focus of the camera of the e vent, it shows one point of view. we're not seeing what the officers are seeing. we're not seeing what the officers are thinking about, obviously. >> this is the second o fficer- involved shooting in san francisco within the past week. both appear to involve people with serious mental health p

rob -- problems. the san francisco board of supervisors will meet again in a special session, they will take a final vote on who will be the inmayor for gavin newsom. the supervisors narrowed the field down to two candidates -- city administrator, ed lee, and sheriff, mike hennessey. after several rounds of voting, ed lee has emerged as the f ront-runner. >> we ostensibly had a p rogressive majority on this board of supervisors we had the opportunity and we made the biggest fumble in san francisco political history. >> well, in the end, the board scheduled a special meeting for 3:00 p.m. on friday to hold a final vote. it appears at the moment city administrator ed lee has the required sixth vote needed but he's right now traveling in

hong kong. some supervisors said they w anted to talk to him directly before they cast final votes. even if the supervisor select lee on friday, it will be l argely symbolic because mayor newsom has not left office yet to take his new position as the lieutenant-governor. a meeting tonight in san bruno will focus on what to do with $38 0,000 in donations for victims of the pipeline explosion. the disaster occurred four months ago on september 9th. some survivors say the money should have been distributed to victims along -- a long time a go. they didn't want to make any m istake on how the money was used. residents will have a chance to offer their suggestions and the sit council is expected to make a final decision next tuesday. in the meantime, two san bruno women are the first of several people to be convicted of trying to steal money meant for blast victims. prosecutors say sonya smith and

olestations happened away from the property and officers also believe there may be more v ictims. welcome back. the holiday shopping season was a green one, that's according to master card. analysts at master card who track all of the spending data including cash, say sales increased at the fastest rate in five years. that's despite that east coast blizzard that made it tough for a lot of shoppers to go out a nd -- shoppers to go out and get to the stores. the top purchases in 2010 were shoes, clothing and electronics. also, 2010 may have been a turnaround for unemployment. it's reported that companies cut nearly 50,000 jobs last year but that's actually 59% better than the number of planned layoffs the month before. the lowest total since 1997. a couple of people we know

president obama may announce changes in his staff on friday. the president has narrowed down the list of candidates for white house chief of staff replacing rahm rahm emanuel who is running for chicago mayor to two people. the u.s. treasury department says the national debt has now topped $14 trillion. get ready. the first time ever. the national debt clock on the

a dozen peninsula school districts are now suing san mateo because they lost money in an investment fund. $20million of the district's money was lost in the 2008 l ehman brothers bankruptcy. the school districts and other public agencies are required to put their money for operating costs into a pulled -- pooled investment fund that the county controls. the county placed the money in l ehman investments. it may take longer for federal courts to make a decision on california's gay marriage ban. that's because the case is h eaded back too the california supreme court. the state's highest court will have to decide with the

a politician in the phillippines unknowingly helped authorities capture two involved in his assassination. he was shooting his family just seconds before a man right there on the left came from behind a car with a gun. police arrested that man and his alleged accomplice on the right after the family turned that photo over to the investigators. they believe the suspects shot him as revenge for ordering his arrest on car theft. 7:53. today is the second day of the preliminary hearing against michael jackson's doctor. later this morning, a bodyguard will testify about dr. con -- about dr. conrad murray's attempts to revive michael

jackson. prosecutors say dr. murray injected the drug propofol to michael jackson and attempted to hide syringes and other items before calling 911. the hearing is expected to go into next week. a judge will rule whether there's enough evidence for the doctor to stand trial on i nvoluntary manslaughter c harges. a marin county woman is f acing charges this morning on suspicion of kidnapping four people in a u-haul truck. 36-year-old lark ann freeman is being held on $50,000 bail. she was arrested in a u-haul friday after she ran a red light in the marin headlands. she told police she was p reparing for an earthquake that she thought would end the world. the bayviews from san francisco's marina green could soon change. ase. hayward police say they are gonna give us more information about what happened later this morning. also this morning oakland police are busy looking for suspects in another shooting. six people were shot. one of them was an innocent man sitting inside his own home. ktvu's claudine wong jus r eceived some new information from the police and she's back now with a live update. >> reporter: good morning. with six victims and possibility of multiple shooters there's still a lot we are atrying to figure out. the shooters are still at large and at least one victim is f ighting for his life. now, over here this is apparently the shooters were located -- located. they were shooting toward the fence. i want you to take a look at the fence because this gives you the best evidence of the damage left behind of 15 to 20 shots fired according to multiple witnesses out here. this all happened after 9:30 last night. there are several spots along the fenceline where you can see

fire overnight. it seems as if renovations to the home that initially caught fire, it start -- the fire s tarted in the garage. the combustibilities were rest behind from construction w orkers, that may have been the cause at this point. now, the fire chief told us this home that caught fire was recently purchased and that the new owner was renovating the property. this fire broke out just after 3:00 a.m. this morning and spread to the home next year. the couple inside 33 maywood noticed flames and called 911. du business -- but dispatch had already received calls about the fire. after firefighters arrived, they were aun toil knock down flames and gain control of it within an hour. pg&e shut down flames to both homes -- homeowners. >> i got a report en route it was visible from highway 80.

uc regents examined the issue and concluded the employees are m istaken in the way they are interpreting the terms of the a treatment. a dozen peninsula school districts are suing san mateo for losing money in an investment fund. $20million of the district's money was lost in the 2008 l ehman brothers bankruptcy. the districts and other public agencies are required to put their money for operating costs into a pooled fund that the county controls. the county placed the money in l ehman brothers investment. the district says the county treasurer should have protected their money by choosing wiser investments. well, the second day of that preliminary hearing against michael jackson's doctor gets started in less than an hour from right now. our reporter bob decastro joins us live from los angeles with all of the details.

jackson's death. so when all is said and do, they think it will take a week or eight days for them to get through 30 witnesses. and we'll know if dr. conrad murray will stand trial for i nvoluntary manslaughter charges in connection with the death of michael jackson. >> bob, before you go, i know you said you are waiting for the jackson family to show up t when they were there yesterday, katherine jackson, michael jackson's mother, did any of them talk to you guys? did they make any comments about the testimony? >> reporter: no, no comments from the jackson family as they went into the courtroom yesterday. we expect that that is probably go nab the case -- be the case as they go through the week h ere. again, this is just the preliminary hearing. so i'm sure the jackson family along with other parties are not gonna want to say too much before this actually does or perhaps does go to trial. >> yeah, that's to be expected.
