[ cheers ] good afternoon. topping our news this noontime, oakland police are investigating a good night that left six people injured -- a gunfight that left six people injured. one of the victims was an innocent bystander shot in his home by a stray bullet. ktvu's claudine wong joins us with the latest on this case. good afternoon, claudine. >> reporter: good afternoon. neighbors say they are scared, scared to come out of their houses, scared to send somebody to school. what you are looking at is damage from bullet holes, from the rain of gunfire that was sprayed across this street. so many wounds were fired, in fact, that even after police

processed the scene and spent hours overnight, a neighbor h anded me this, this is a casing from a high-powered rifle. this is all being described as a terrible dunnfight -- terrible gunfight. witnesses say it happened so quickly, cars, car doors opening and then gunshots. >> i heard some gunshots and i told my mother and then i told her to get down on the ground and i told my three little brothers the same thing. >> i heard, pow, pow, pow. >> reporter: did you hear somebody firing back? >> yes. >> and then they -- you know how usually they go in the car

fast and -- >> reporter: the squealing tires? >> yes. >> reporter: they didn't do t hat? >> no. they won't slow. >> reporter: the connection to the shooters are still being investigated. but there was a sixth victim, a 49-year-old man who was just standing in his living room when he and his house were just riddled with bullets. >> we want to make sure there's no retaliation shootings. we'll be putting officers in place. >> i don't wa my kids to be in a gunfire. >> reporter: back live out here at 89th avenue and d street, so there are multiple shooters and six victims. five shot on the corner out h ere. they range in age from 19 years old to 2 years old. one is in critical. others have non-life- threatening injuries. and then there's this 49-year- old man who wa in the crossfire. he's still in critical c ondition.

it's unclear if he will survive. back to you. >> thank you, claudine. hayward police are investigating the shooting death last night of a 28-year- old man. investigators say maurice collins was killed inside his home in the 29,000 block of vanderbilt street. officers were looking for clues near collins' home this morning. police labeled the shooter as an intrude -- intruder but provided few other details. >> our preliminary investigation investigates it probably was not a random act. however, i can't go into that that because of the in-- infancy stages of the investigation. >> he was the loving father of two girls between the age of 5 and 7. you know, it's really hard when you lose a family member and then you have to go and tell two kids who don't really understand what happened to their dad. >> -- to their dad. >> reporter: police say they hope anyone what saw something unusual around the time of the shooting will give them a call. in san francisco, police chief george gascon is talking

about crime. he just wrapped up a press conference to discuss the y ear- end crime statistics for 2010. he talked about new procedures that helped reduce crime and the need for more nonlethal weapons available to his officers. jade hernandez joins us now from san francisco with more. good afternoon, jade. >> reporter: good afternoon. sanfrancisco police have been in the news for several o fficer-involved shootings recently. today the chief of police discussed crime in the city here at the center. he contends that the city of san francisco is a much -- is much safer than it has been. the department compiled the y ear-end report. the number of homicides in 2010 are up slightly. the last time san francisco saw that number was back in 1974. you are looking at video from the city's last homicide last year. chief gascon said no one should try to fair urban and suburban

areas. the rates showed san francisco's murder rate is much lower than in boston, and even l.a. a commander says the d epartment's refocus on the c ity's areas where most of the crimes occurred has given officers a way to focus on the efforts and then the chief addressed the most recent controversy, the o fficer- involved shooting of a man in a wheelchair. >> the administration was conducted -- the administration investigation was conducted. in terms of training and policy, that's discussed with our t raining staff in order to see, number one, whether there were any training violations, and number two, is there anything that we cha learn from here. >> the chief then invited the media to attend a use-of-force simulator at the academy later this afternoon. the chief said he will.

>> back to the board in february to request tasers for his department, a move he says could have prevented the shooting monday. even commissioners giving the green light on tasers this time around, police would still not be able to use them for at least another year. the chief says he will continue to be up front about investigations like this one and any others. >> we're very transparent. we're talking to you very quickly. we're gonna give you information that later may turn out to be somewhat less accurate than originally thought to be. >> many police departments won't talk to you. they will just say, we had a shooting. two people were involved and one person is down and that will be the end of the story for weeks to come. i don't believe in doing business that way another h unt -- >> reporter: another subject the chief touched upon is debra

madden. he was pleased to announce that the crime lab had earned its accreditation. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, jade. the san francisco board of supervisors will meet again on friday afternoon in a special session to take a final vote on an interim mayor who will serve out the final year of gavin newsom 'term. a meeting last night lasted more than eight hours as supervisors narrowed the field down to two candidates. city add min straighter ed lee and sheriff mike hennessey. after several hours of -- rounds of voting, ed lee emerged as the front-run he. that did not sit tell with supervisor chris daly who a ccused his colleagues of m issing an opportunity to put one of their own in this seat. >> we had an opportunity to put him on the board of supervisors

and we -- him in this position. >> it appears that ed lee has the required six votes but he's currently traveling in hong kong and some of the supervisors said they wanted to a talk to him directly before casting final votes. san francisco's public defender, jeff adachi, began his third arms term this morning by taking the -- third term this morning by taking the oath of office. >> by the city of san francisco. >> by the city of san francisco. >> congratulations. the coast guard said they worked all night to unload 2,,000 gallons of diesel fuel from a crabbing boat. crews are still working to get the boat working. the three people on board the boat got off safely when it ran aground. a desperate seven-hour search came to a tragic conclusion on the rugged coast of sonoma -- sonoma county. we learned a man who drove his motorcycle off highway 1 in jenner has died. the chp says 48-year-old douglas scott fennel of santa rosa made desperate cell phone calls yesterday afternoon immediately after the crash. fennel first called his wife. he called 911. fennel told emergency dispatchers, he lost control of his harley and randed -- and landed in thick brush between the highway and the ocean but he could not tell them exactly

where. that set off a massive search involving several search helicopters and several police agencies. >> we had three or four locations in the beginning. we tried every one of them an finally we just went on foot. a san rafael couple is h omeless after a fire next door spread. the fire began around 3:30 this morning and did spread to the home next door. the first home was vary can't. but the people, two of them, inside the second house were evacuated safely. officials think combustible material may be to blame left behind from workers. >> i got a call. we encourage all people to h

ave -- residents to have smoke detectors. i'll not sure if the smoke detectors alerted the people in the next-door house. >> officials say damage was more expensive on the first home. public safety officials at stanford university tried to grab her monday night. the undergraduate student told officers approached her about 6 :40 p.m. near sara and campus drive. it happened on a path near the edge of campus. she said the man grabbed her in a bear hug and put his hand over her mouth. >> she didn't want to be there. she wanted to get away and told him that she had friends to meet and suspect is reported have to -- to have said, not at this time. >> the woman reportedly tried to bite the man's hand and he took off. the attacker is described a as white man in his 40s wearing a dark-shooed sweatshirt. the victim said he had a

mustache, goatee, brown hair and thin build. police are urging people to walk in pairs on campus and know where the emergency call boxes are. today is the second day of the preliminary hearing against michael jackson's doctor to determine if he will stand trial for manslaughter. prosecutors say murray administered the propofol anesthetic to jackson without the proper medical treatment. and jackson's body guard said when he came in, he saw murray giving jackson chest complexes with one hand. an autopsy determined that jackson died from an overdose of the drug. the hearing is expected to go into next week. oakland raiders' coach tom cable has been fired. the exer -- they decided not to exercise the last two years on his contract. this was the first nonlosing

eight-inch water main break. as you can see, water created quite a mess on the roadway. all right. let's check in with steve paulson for a look at the forecast. still sunny and clear? >> sunny for most. we had some fog still -- still lingering in the valley. it's sunny for the most. walnut creek, only 50, starting to get that little layer of h aze. high pressure is built in, the cold temperatures, 20s, 30s in the morning. during the day, mostly sunny and each day we are warming up just a little bit. so this week cold mornings and cold, near 60, high temperatures for san jose, santa cruz. it looks like even los gatos we're getting closer some of the lows, cordelia came in, there's a couple of upper 0s.

gilroy and petaluma, stanford was 23. sancarlos, 37 and in san francisco -- hold on a second. potrero hill came in at 38 this morning. if you thought it was cold. it was. right now we're seeing 40s and 50s. if you have the fog you are still in the upper 40s or very low 50s. mountain view 52. sanjose at 53. 2 in tahoe. they were down to three. look at fresno because of the fog. once that sets up, that footprint of fog 2349 valley you just can't budge you will get temperatures like this from sacramento to temperature. you have to go down five, keep in mind you will run 23450 that wall of fog -- you will run into that wall of fog. 68 down in san diego. that sounds downright noise n ice. that's because they have a lot of cloud cover. there's the fog coming back in from the valley. you can actually see it.

we are seeing a little bit of a north nearly breeze. so that's going to push that right back in solano county, contra costa county, north bay, south bay tonight. but then it will turn off -- burn off. the is the low spinning down there. that's southern california. a lot of cloud cover down there. our system stays to the north. the high-pressure system is right around the oregon border. it says know, you are not coming in. it's a dry pattern. high is firmly in place. with that, the mornings are c old. but any rain stays well to the south or well to the north. patchy fog, a little warmer, hazy sunshine -- hazy sunshine. low 50s for a few. but mid- to upper 50s. each day we're coming up about one or two degrees. morgan hill, san jose, los g atos, 60, half moon bay, 58

warm degrees. no big changes until s unday/monday and then we'll get cooler and brie breezy from the northwest -- and breezy from the northwest. taxi rates may go up. the association is requested to formally investigate this. cab drivers charge $2.25 a minute. the union says any hike should be moderate so it won't scare away potential customers. no date has been set to consider the rate increase. more and more bay area travelers are riding the rails these days. amtrack reports business is b ooming apparently due to the increase in economy. the san jose too auburn line and the line to runs between oakland and bakersfield are the two most popular lines. ahead, we'll tell you where

wound in a shooting at a -- at a high school in omaha, nebraska. these are live pictures. an omaha police officer says no students were wounded. a suspect is in custody. the adult the wounded were both male. there's no information about their condition or the age of the suspects. but again, a school shooting in omaha, nebraska today. there are two lucky winners from the megamillions. one ticket was sold at a safeway in eastern washington. the other ticket was sold in idaho. the winning numbers are -- there were ten $50,000 winners in california. those tickets matched the first five numbers but not the m egaball. swans appear to be making a come back at the palace of the

pine arts. last weekend caretakers placed blanche, the one remaining swan, back in the water along with the two friends she made at point reyes. the caretakers had moved blanche to point reyes in november for her own safety after someone who killed the other remaining swan. city officials plan to unveil renovations to the la -- renovations for the lagoon next week. >> that will do it for us. thanks for watching. have a great day.
