foggy. either one. if you have both it will stay that way for a while. some of that fog is so thick that there's an advisory for it towards the delta and sacramento valley, but i'm surprised there sacramento one for the east bay. also up to the north bay. once the fog burns off or if you don't have it upper 50s, hayward 58. mountain view 59. san jose 60. antioch 49. pacifica 56. here's sal. steve, right now traffic is moving along pretty well if you're on 80 westbound or westbound 92 heading out to the high-rise or driving on 880 south. all those freeways doing well. the big issue would be the fog. it's not foggy on the golden gate bridge as you can see it's a clear shot here to san francisco. and if you're driving in san francisco itself it's also not foggy. but the fog is moving through. i'll have a report on that coming up. at 6:01 let's go back to the desk. sal, thank you. there's word this morning of a trash collection fiasco in san mateo county. this involves a new garbage company serving 440,000 people. ktvu's jade hernandez joining

us live. she's in redwood city right now with the details. what's going on, jade? >> reporter: well, call this problem what you will, it really stinks for residents. we are live in redwood city this morning and this is the problem. i want you to take a look at this video right here. the issue stems from a trash company switch over. previously allied waste provided service for san mateo county. the new provider has had a rough couple days. in the first three days of the takeover, complaints have poured in from more than 8,000 customers. and the calls keep coming. the calls have gone straight to the company's customer service line according to the san jose mercury. they serve 440,000 people between burling game and east palo alto including here in redwood city. residents are bracing themselves for an 18% hike in garbage services. the problem for many customers is missed pick ups. but then yesterday a 50-gallon diesel fuel spill which leaked into a nearby storm drain which dumps water into the san

francisco bay also created some problems. now they signed a more than $50 million per year contract to provide service to san mateo county customers through 2020. we bring you out live here to redwood city. as you can see businesses and residents are still pulling out their trash containers at the moment. and of course all they can do is wait for the company to just get back on the streets and figure out how to keep up their day. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:03. well, this morning cal train is investigating a deadly accident that happened on the peninsula. investigators say a southbound train hit a 19-year-old man who was on the tracks about 1:30 this morning. this happened near the california avenue train station in palo alto. still not clear why the young man who was from palo alto was on the tracks. but investigators are suspecting his death may have been a suicide. petaluma police want your help this morning. they're trying to find a suspect with a history of dui

violations who fled a hit-and- run accident scene. police say 38-year-old gonzalez was driving a car that collided with another car on east washington street the morning of december 28th. that crash seriously injured the 66-year-old woman in the other car. police say gonzalez has two dui convictions on his record and he has a suspended driver's license. it has been a violent start to the new year in the city of oakland. police are investigating the third deadly shooting in just the past few days. this one happened about 9:45 last night on 16th and center streets. police found a man who was slumped over the wheel of a car. he'd been shot several times. he died right there at the scene. so far no arrests have been made. a troubled nightclub could be shut down for good. the mercury news reports the move is aimed at club wet in san jose and comes after police revoked the club's license this week after a new year's eve

fight. the report says three women punched another woman inside the club then punctured her cheek with a high heel. but police were never called and security reportedly told the victim to get a ride with friends to the hospital. club wet disputes the night's event. now the downtown club has a history of violence. video showing a brawl inside the club turned up on youtube in september 2009 prompting police to temporarily revoke its license. and in july 2009 several people were stabbed on the dance floor. the city attorney reportedly plans to ask a judge for a permanent injunction to close the club during a january 24th hearing. san jose police say they've uncovered surprising new information about a bank robbery last month. they say the robber and the bank teller were working together. police say jose was working at the bank of america on west capital expressway when steve davis walked in wearing a disguise. they say davis handed the teller a note demanding money

then ran off with an undisclosed amount of cash and then discovered the two split the money. both men are now in custody. 6:05. the remains of a dead deer found in a san mateo county neighborhood may be the result of a mountain lion attack. police found the deer just before 10:00 yesterday morning on robin wood lane in hillsboro. experts say if you spot a mountain lion, go to a safe location then call 911. also they're saying take extra precautions and don't leave small children or pets understood attended in backyards. a 10-year-old girl hit by a bay area school bus is recovering at home this morning. the accident happened at the intersection of roswell drive in millepede us yesterday afternoon. the chp says the girl was crossing the intersection with a friend when the bus bumped her. she was not seriously hurt, but she was taken to the hospital as a precaution. the highway patrol plans a full investigation. your time now 6:06. if you're driving in the east bay this morning, there is some road closures that are about to

happen in about an hour and a half ktvu's kraig debro joins us live from oakland. he knows what areas you drivers may want to avoid. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning. fifth avenue specifically in oakland we're at fifth avenue right now and over the i-80 overpass here. traffic on i-80 probably going to be a little slow here. cal trans is advising drivers to take an alternative route. i'll have more information on that in a second. take a look at the overpass now. the reason behind the construction here size of retrofit project crews are going to work on the overpass and that is why they need to close fifth avenue. the total cost of this fifth avenue construction project is about $170 million. now in addition to the seismic improvements, the new structure once they get it in is going to be 46 feet wider than what it is now and they're going to have 10 to 12-foot shoulders and a southbound auxiliary lane that will make it easier to

merge onto i-880 from fifth street onramp. in addition it's also going to provide construction crews the ability to build the freeway in stages. that's going to be important that way they don't have to slow down or close traffic. here's a little more information on detours. northbound 880 traffic advised to get off at oak street and then take a right. get off at oak street instead of the embarcadero ramp. it's going to be difficult and or closed and you won't be able to go right on fifth any way. drivers go oak street to another right on seventh and continue onto fifth avenue. southbound traffic take the seventh street to east eighth street and head north on seventh street again. there's going to be more signs posted in that area rather than talk you all the way through it this hour. more signs posted i-880 is always backed up. always a lot of traffic. this is only going to add to it. but, again, it's for seismic retrofitting progress. we're going to talk to cal trans as quickly as we can to find out just what they're

going to be doing today and how that's going to effect the project. reporting live in oakland, kraig debro, channel 2 news. very interesting. people should be aware of. 6:08. sal always has what we need to know in traffic. yeah. we're getting word of a new crash, brand new southbound 101 in san mateo. if you're driving down to san mateo there's a new crash at highway 92. so watch for that. the accident has just been reported. let's go outside and take a look at westbound 580 livermore. that traffic moves well. and if you're driving to oakland that traffic looks good. let me try something here. let me just move one of the maps here to this area here right there. all right. there we go. so right here there's a new accident popped up in san mateo. and i don't see the road sensors moving along getting any sort of action just yet. but they will if that accident -- we're getting more details now it seems like it's blocking one of the lanes. be ware. all right. move along to live pictures.

southbound 680 passing the mission boulevard exit that traffic looks okay. and this morning westbound bay bridge a small delay. nothing major yet. we'll keep watching it obviously. enolate go to steve. thank you, very good morning to you all. for some mostly sunny, mild to warm for others. it's going to be foggy and cold. southern california a little low down there might send in a few high clouds. peninsula, south bay later on but not an issue. they might be there. the fog coming back in from the valley east bay, north bay and that other system left of your screen has no chance. fog though dense fog advisory is out for the delta and also out to the sacramento valley. that's not going anywhere that fog. and some of that has come back in. that's going to make for very thick fog and tough driving conditions. fog advisory delta valley until about 10:00 and then lifts a little bit. morning lows are also very cold. kenwood's 27. north napa about three readings at 29.

men lo park 31. about five readings around 31, 32. hill 37. twin peeks is 38. coal valley 39. cold in the city. 37 fairfield. that fog is going to make for a brutally cold day. livermore in the low 30s. 29 santa rosa. napa 31. 37 mountain view. redwood city now 39. it's cold across the board. speaking of san raff yell, fog, cold, hazy sunshine. 36, 45, go for a high of 52. that's it. too much of that easterly breeze coming in. 6 in that ho. 28 redding. 40 because of the fog sacramento and fresno. highs won't be much higher than 42 or 43 probably unless the fog burns off. look at monterey. 39. san diego a mild 56 due to cloud cover right there. some of that cloud cover will give us a few high clouds but that's going to do it. overall high pressure's here until about sunday. then some changes will start to occur. we'll get more of a northwest

welcome back to the morning news. another american is being held in iran on spying charges. an iranian newspaper says a 55- year-old american woman had spying equipment hidden on her body when she arrived in iran from neighboring armenia without a visa. as we've been reporting uc berkeley graduates have been imprisoned in iran since july

2009. sara who was arrested with them was released last september. well, passengers on board a turkish airlines flight from norway overpowered a man who tried to hijack a plane as it landed at the airport in istanbul yesterday. police say the man is turkish and he said he had a bomb and demanded the plane return to norway. not clear what his motive was but police say he has a mental illness. no injuries or explosives were found. the u.s. will send an extra 1400 marines to afghanistan. the pentagon reportedly wants to increase its combat forces against the taliban this spring. at the same time, the obama administration is sticking by its pledge to start withdrawing american troops this summer. the ultimate goal is for the u.s. to completely hand over security to afghan forces by the year 2014. now the republicans are in charge of the u.s. house, their first order of business is a civics lesson.

let's go tour o reporter allison burns in our washington d.c. bureau with more on why they're reading the constitution on the house floor this morning. good morning, allison. >> reporter: good morning to you, dave. one of the most common complaints from republicans when democrats were in charge in the house was that democrats were overreaching their constitutional powers. well, now that john boehner has taken the speaker's gavel and republicans have taken control of the house, they're taking the unprecedented step of reading the constitution aloud on the house floor this morning. some democrats like nancy pelosi will also step in and read parts of it. also this morning a key house committee is getting right to work on a bill to repeal health reform. republicans call it obama care and say parts of it are unconstitutional. but democrats say it's a big mistake to try to undo what they see as big health care improvements. >> like being able to put your children on health insurance to

age 26 and not being stopped from getting insurance because of pre-existing conditions. those kinds of things they are absolutely crazy to be talking about repealing. >> reporter: now lit coreports republicans are already breaking their own new rules by refusing to allow amendments to the health care repeal bill. one of their promises was to have a more open amendment process in the new congress. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. well, san francisco mayor gavin newsom says he's pleased with the candidate it appears the board of supervisors will choose to replace him. the outgoing board of supervisors is scheduled to hold a final vote tomorrow, their last day on the job. it appears city administrator ed lee has the six votes needed to make him interim mayor. >> it would be an exbe put in t position and as a san franciscan, look, i'm the ex-

mayor, as a san franciscan i couldn't be more proud. >> a new board of supervisors will be seated on saturday. in their first meeting on tuesday they're expected to make the final decision on who will serve out mayor newsom's final year in office. if elected lee would become the first asian-american. one more task mayor newsom has to take care of is selecting a replacement for harris as district attorney. she was sworn in as state attorney general on monday. sources tell us here at ktvu that board's supervisor president is most likely choice to replace harris. an announcement could come as early as tomorrow. time now 6:19. let's go right to sal. breaking news in san francisco. what's happening. that's right. there's a boat on fire where the fishing boats are kept near pier 45 in san francisco. right near the little chapel behind the restaurants behind all those restaurants that

mostly tourists visit in the fisherman's wharf area. the fire is out but a lot of thick black smoke coming up. firefighters had to make some cuts in all that. there's a lot of activity near pier 45. again, near the little chapel. so that's what all the fire activity's all about. you can probably see it from a lot of areas of north beach. fire crews are on the scene to have a command center set up. it does appear as if they're getting a handle on this fire. 25-foot boat pretty dangerous giverren all the other boats right there and all the wood piers and all that. so the fire department is there. let's move along and take a look at westbound bay bridge. that traffic is light so far coming in to san francisco. and on the -- let me go back to the maps here on the peninsula southbound 101 as you drive down to san mateo go back to the maps here there is a crash, an injury crash there southbound 101 at highway 92. it's blocking at least one of

the lanes. i would say use 2 80 for now instead of 101 heading down to san mateo. 6:20. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a cold morning or cold and foggy morning depending if you have both. it's going to be a double whammy today because the fog is not going to go far. we have an east breeze coming right # right back into the valley. there's a lot of upper 30s in san francisco. fog advisory right now delta and valley and i wouldn't be surprised if there's one in the east bay a little later. it's so thick in some areas as they comes back in over san pablo bay can thicken up over the bridges. watch out. patchy dense fog about 10:00 a.m. things start to lift unless you're out to the valley and it's just crazy out there. kenwood 27. north napa 29. men lo parks 31. sfo is 38. i think that redwood city is about two hours old. there's no way sfo is colder than redwood city.

mountain view that's at mofette. 34 livermore. san jose 36. it's cold for everybody. not much going on for us. mostly sunny, cold lows. mild to the south bay in that fog you may not get out of the 40s. that's the problem with this. so antioch is 49. 54 richmond. 58 oakland. 58 hayward. san francisco 55. 60 san jose. 62 santa cruz. 53 pleasanton. 59 morgan hill. just depends. fog, you're cold. sunny, notoo bad. thick fog nights and mornings. mild days take us into saturday. starting to cloud up late sunday into monday. pam and dave. this morning the labor department released latest weekly employment report and it is worse than expected. initial jobless claims jumped to 409,000 last week. that's after dropping 0 the wee analysts expected an increase because some people put off filing during the holidays, but they did not expect the new

numbers to be above 400,000. we'll see how wall street responds in the next ten minutes. bank of america is experimenting with a new fee structure for checking accounts. it will offer customers a choice of how they pay for their accounts including ways to avoid fees by linking multiple account, credit cards and merrill lynch investment accounts. wants to make fees clear and encourage them to bring more financial activity to b of a. new legal action in that san bruno pipeline disaster. the courtroom could be very crowded when pg&e settles the growing number of claims. plus a rare behind the scenes look into police training. how some bay area recruits are using technology to learn whether or not to use deadly force.

so far traffic looks good careful by the east bay. number of lawsuits is growing in last september's deadly pipeline explosion in san bruno. the san mateo daily journal reports several new lawsuits

were filed accusing pg&e of negligence in the disaster that killed eight people and destroyed dozens of homes. pg&e is still waiting for the state's decision on whether one judge should hear all of the lawsuits connected to that disaster. after two recent officer- involved shootings in san francisco, the department is now opening its doors to show how police train to decide whether or not to shoot someone. the department invited ktvu to their academy to show us how the training simulator works. police say it helps prepare officers for volatile situations. officers watch a scenario on a big screen and get the chance to practice making split second decisions. >> you're trying to live. you're trying to survive this altercation. it's hard to remember exactly what happened. >> every crew in san francisco received about six hours of simulated training. time now 6:27. neighbors in one part of

those numbers. but economic news this morning also on the weekly jobless claims not great. but there seems to be hope this morning that the monthly numbers that will come out tomorrow will be good. so we'll see what happens. you can see on the lower part of your screen down just slightly. all right. we'll smile and say good morning to you. thank you for joining us here on the ktvu morning news. thursday january 6. i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. a trash collection company is getting off to a shaky start in san mateo county. there have been thousands of customer complaints and even an oil spill. ktvu's jade hernandez is in redwood city this morning with the story. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. as you can see traffic containers are still being put out for pick up. recoaling is the new trash company facing problems here in san mateo county. the issue stems from a trash company switch over. previously allied waste provided it was for san mateo county. the new provider has had a rough couple of days. in the first three days of the takeover, complaints have

poured in from more than 8,000 customers and the calls keep coming. the calls have gone straight to the company's customer service line according to to the san jose mercury. customers report service stinks. they serve 440,000 people between burling game and east palo alto. redwood city residents are even more frustrated since they're bracing themselves for an 18% hike in garbage services. the biggest complaint is missed pick up and yesterday a 50,000 gallon diesel fuel leaked into a storm drain which dumps water into the san francisco bay. a truck drove over a large rock puncturing the gas tank. they signed a more than $50 million per year contract to provide service to san mateo county customers through 2020. now we've tried contacting the company but have yet to reach anyone this morning. reporting live from redwood city, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:32. in oakland a father of four

remains in critical condition this morning. he is the innocent victim of tuesday night's shootout in east oakland where five other people were shot. investigators say the 49-year- old man was sitting at home watching tv when a stray bullet went through his wall. oakland police believe the gunfire may be gang-related. they're fearing retaliation is possible in the coming days. hayward police say a man who was shot and killed in his home may have been targeted. 28-year-old maurice collins was in bed tuesday night when someone broke into his apartment and shot him. police say the gunman had to climb up a tree to get into collins' second floor apartment on vanderbilt street. there was a bullet in the ceiling there. that led police to believe collins may have fired back. police are still looking for suspects in this case. so far no arrests have been made. some car thieves in the oakland hills are going high- tech. one victim took video of the crime in progress. take a look. it shows a criminal stealing

items from her locked toyota highlander without breaking the windows or even touching the locks. he's using a device that overrides the security system and unlocks the doors using remote control. the woman who took this video did not want to reveal her last name. >> just seems like a matter of time to me before they figure out how to start it and then it's not just parking change that's gone, it's your car. >> burglars have hit a handful of cars in the oakland hills in recent months. all of those victims own toyota highlanders. a toyota spokesperson tells us here at ktvu that the car company is not aware of anyone hacking into its remote control security system. time now 6:34. later today the coast guard plans to finally tow away that crab boat from half-moon bay. that 65-foot boat ran aground early tuesday morning. but the coast guard didn't want to move it until crews finished removing 2,000 gallons of fuel on board. that job was completed last night. the chp has a warning for

drivers in the south bay after a series of crashes. officers say there have been several incidence in the past few month where a driver has survived a crash on the highway only to be severely injured or killed a short time later by another car. the chp wants to remind drivers to stay in their car and wait for police to arrive after an accident. >> good advice. time now 6:34. sal, what's happening around the toll plaza? it is getting busier out there. the traffic continues to move normally on the bridge. it's getting a little bit busier. today it seems just to be a little lighter than it was. tuesday was the busiest day. today seems to be a little lighter. but we are getting a little bit of a back up. let's move along and take a look at interstate 880. the traffic is moving well in both directions near the coliseum headling south to hayward and fremont. across the bay southbound 101 at 92 that accident turned out to be minor injuries. one car up against the center divider had to get it over to the shoulder.

not a big traffic jam right now in san mateo. 6:35. let's go to steve. very cold and very foggy conditions out there. the person who was -- i was on highway coming in and there was two of us parallel and i think we were going 10 miles an hour. whoever that person was thank you for the company. it's that tough for some. others it's clear but it's cold temperatures. there's going to be a big difference. you may have some low 40s if you're stuck in that fog to 60s or even low 60s for some. higher clouds might come in also from the little low off southern california. fog advisory in the delta and valley. but i'm going to give my own unofficial fog advisory for the east bay and parts of the north bay. it's crazy visibility out there. some of that fog coming back in from the valley. it just doesn't want to budge. it's going to be one of those cold foggy days. if you're heading to tracy or stockton or sacramento or if you have to drive that

direction, it's lousy. that's the best i can say. if you don't have the fog, it can drop fast. 21 kenwood. north napa three readings 29. men lo park 31. coal valley 39. i saw a couple. there are some 30s eastbound in san francisco. this pattern is here for at least the next three days. sunday we might see more of a different pattern. monday and tuesday is our next hint of any rain. does not look like a big system but maybe a little bit of rain. that would be the next one for those of you who maybe work outside or plan accordingly. some of these 30s and 20s. santa rosa 28 sonoma airport. 34 livermore. mountain view's 37. 38sfo. redwood city 39. i think that's about two hours old that redwood city. san raff yell getting some of that fog. high of only 52. some locations north and south

could be about 56 or 58. just depends. 28 for redding. 56 san diego because of the cloud cover. 6 in tahoe. i saw i think 13 below at mammoth. it's really cold. i'm sure bridge port's about 15 below as well. absolute wail of high pressure near the oregon border. just deflects everything. coming up from the south a few high clouds. 29 to 44. thick, thick fog. seriously the second you pull out you may see it. for others it will be clear and cold and then hazy sun later on. and 52 to 62. fairfield 52. concord 53. antioch. ♪ [ 49. hayward 58. then you find 60 for san jose. 62 santa cruz. pleasanton only 53. fremont 58. same for mountain view. gill roy about 62. thick fog nights and mornings, sunny to mostly sunny through saturday. we see a little pattern change sunday and mostly cloudy on

monday. here's claudine speaking of that fog. claudine. >> reporter: well, we are at the benicia bridge and it is foggy out here. tough to see as you approach. i want to show you what it looks like at the toll plaza right now. we did cross the bridge and we talked to drivers this morning about what it's like to drive in these conditions. some people say people are driving way too slow. some people say people are driving way too fast. you get a bit of a warning as you come towards the benicia bridge. as you approach the bridge you're going to see this sign that warns you heavy fog on the bridge. warns you yes you should slow down. we talked to people this morning here's what they had to say about what they do. >> absolutely. you never know what somebody might do with this fog. you never know how far in front of them you got to be or behind them. definitely take your time. >> reporter: take your time. that seems to be the motto this morning. this is a look at what it looks like driving across the benicia bridge southbound.

actually as you drive out of the heavy fog. it is still tough to see. really, the biggest problem is just knowing what the people around you are going to do and making sure you look out for your turn. most people we talk today say they drive it every day, they can do this commute in their sleep and yet in this heavy fog what they do is sometimes miss their exit and make a quick turn to get into another lane and that can cause problems. just keep an eye out this morning and take extra time if you're headed this way. live at the benicia bridge, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. thank you. new information about the bird deaths in arkansas. what happened on new year's eve that sent thousands of birds flying to their deaths. this week's shooting outside a supermarket has led a in two bay area cities. good morning. if you're driving in the south bay clear weather and traffic getting a little bit busier as you drive into the valley. we'll tell you more about the morning commute and the bay weather.

history of violence could reportedly be forced to close permanently. the city attorney there plans to ask for an injunction against club wet after a woman was injured in a fight on new year's eve. and today's wall street journal says the united states plans to send an extra 1400 marines to afghanistan. the pentagon reportedly wants to increase its combat forces against the taliban this spring. city leaders in novato are alerting the public about the increasing problem of gang violence in their community. an open letter posted on the city's website reads sadly it is clear that both the gang members are attempting to gain a foothold in marin county specifically novato and synura fell. this warning follows a suspected gang shooting in novato earlier this week as we reported two people were wounded inside a parked car in a safeway parking lot early monday morning. police have arrested one suspect, a young woman. your time now 6:44.

there's new speculation this morning about what killed thousands of birds in arkansas causing them to suddenly drop out of the sky. one idea, loud noise from fireworks startled them. that's the latest findings from the state fish and game. they say 5,000 birds were scared out of their roost on new year's eve and they collided with trees, cars, even the ground in arkansas. blackbirds have poor night vision, usually they don't fly at nighttime. well, elizabeth edwards makes no mention of her former husband former presidential candidate john edwards, in her will. edwards left her entire estate to their three children. the will is dated just six days before elizabeth edwards died of breast cancer december 7th. elizabeth and john separated in january of last year after he admitted to an affair and fathering a child. they'd been married 33 years. back here at home another ship in the moth ball fleet is about to be towed today.

the s.s. don will be moved to a dry dock in san francisco. it's part of an ongoing clean up operation. just last week the s.s. bay became the 14th ship removed from the waters near benicia. paint and barnacles low pressure scraped off the ships before being moved to virginia. that's where they'll be recycled. one of the lucky winning ticketholders of the megamillions jackpot will collect his $190 million today. a retired man in washington state purchased his ticket at a safeway. he will split that jackpot with another winning ticket though that was purchased just 125 miles away in idaho. that ticketholder has not come forward. listen to this, the winning megamillions numbers almost mirrored some winning fictional numbers from the tv show lost. on the show the character hurlly played numbers and ended up winning a $114 million jackpot. and just to refresh the megamillions numbers were 4, 8,

coming back in over san pablo bay. santa rosa is 28. that's a huge difference. 27 mountain view. oakland 38. san jose 36. i know tahoe's 6. but i think mammoth's 13 below. there's some really cold numbers, even redding's 28. few high clouds might just pay a visit here coming from that little low off southern california. won't mean much but that's where they're coming from. that next system out there simply has no place to go. they align themselves north to south or parallel to the coast that means they're weak. 29 to 44 inland fog or just clear and cold. mostly sunny. hazy but some of that fog means temperatures will struggle all day long to get out of the upper 30s and low 40s. so 52 to 62. unless you're in that fog, antioch maybe out to brentwood, discovery bay too much fog. 52 vacaville. santa rosa 57. oakland downtown berkeley 58. 60 san jose. morganhill to gill roy 50s or
