i'm tara moriarty live in san francisco at a popular hotel where half a dozen people mysteriously fell i'll last night. we'll tell you what investigators believe is the source coming up. it could be a tough driving in alameda since all of the traffic lights are all. this cold is in place. but will we see a change by the weekend? what lead up to deputies firing shots it's all ahead here on the ktvu morning news. complete bay area news coverage continues.

well good morning to you. welcome to friday january 7th i'm dave clark. >> i'm pam cook. i want to know what it will be like today and the weekend. let's check in with steve. good morning. all right pam and dave thank you very much. tough driving conditions but today most of the thickest fog seems to be out to the valley and santa clara valley. san jose to morgan hill it's pea soup service. we do have low clouds and high clouds. highs 40s and 50s. here is sal. steve, right now traffic looks good on the san mateo bridge. also the traffic looks good on the dumbarton bridge. this is a look at san jose traffic looks good up to west valley. 6:01 let's go back to the desk. topping our news this morning the investign is under way into an overnight mystery at a popular san

francisco hotel. six guests got sick at the marriott on fourth street between market and mission late last night. one critical question needs to be answered. ktvu tara moriarty joins us from san francisco with the update. investigators are blaming carbon monoxide poisoning. we have been speaking to people staying at the hotel all morning long. none of them had any idea this was going on here. this is a very large hotel. as we were told no evacuations took place here at the marriott. as we talked to fire officials they told us they thought the victims were suffering from some sort of virus. that turned out not to be the case. crews arrived. two had to be hospitalized. four were treated right here. the health department were here on scene. they did find high levels of

carbon monoxide. investigator cannot figure out where the dangerous gas is coming from. we were told the incident happened on the fourth floor. we put in calls to several officials with the health department and fire department. carbon monoxide is a gas that can create flu like symptoms. the corporate office is said to be issuing a statement. we will bring it to you later in our broadcast. we are live here in san francisco i'm tara moriarty. time now 6:03. a police standoff has ended near hayward with an arrest. alameda county sheriffs deputies rushed to an department on maddox road. as the deputies arrived, the suspect reportedly pulled out a gun. that's when one officer opened fire. deputies say it's not clear if that suspect was wounded.

he jumped out of a third story window to escape but he was later captured. no one inside of the apartment was hurt. on the last day in office the outgoing san francisco board of supervisors meets for a symbolic vote today to serve out the last year of mayor gavin newsoms term. the supervisors are expected to choose city administrator ed lee but the ultimate decision will fall to the board. we asked them who they plan to vote for as interim mayor. >> i am very, very comfortable with ed lee as our interim mayor. >> there is other people out there as well. i will do my home work and i look forward to making my decision. >> ed lee is currently vacationing in asia. he's scheduled to return sunday night. he did release a statement saying he would be honored to serve as mayor if selected.

>> and mayor gavin newsom hopes to announce some time today for his next district attorney. board of supervisors david chiu with drew his name. he said he can better serve the community by staying on the board. you can kind much more political coverage including a link to the complete statement made by -- including a complete link to the complete statement. they are fed up with the growing number of prostitutes walking the streets of their city so they are taking matter into their own hands and patrolling the streets themselves looking for prostitutes and pimps. we spoke to one woman who has joined this citizens war against prostitution. sometimes you can look up the block and see one gal on

each corner. and we are corned that it could also be children. under age children. >> the citizen patrol members immediately call 911 when they spot a prostitute. they hope this effort will help a police department that is under staffed and over worked. prostitution they say lead to other crimes. time now 6:05. a legal battle is brewing over a plan to resume gravel mining along the russian river. they gave the okay to a mining company to start work in the picturesque alexander valley. two conservation groups are suing to stop that project. mining companies have removed millions of gallons of gravel. that has ruined the quality of water and wiped out thousands of fish. time now is 6:06 we want to go back to cal. there is a power outage in

alameda that might be causing problems. >> that is right. the traffic lights might be out. just be careful and treat it as a four-way stop. let's go out and take a look at the pictures. westbound bay bridge traffic looks good coming into san francisco. no problems on the lower deck between san francisco and oakland. and speaking of oakland so far so good. it is getting more crowded by the minute but northbound 880 traffic looks good coming up past the coliseum and driving toward downtown. this morning if you are driving from fairfield to vallejo you will see fog for the most part the traffic is doing pretty well heading west. 6:07 let's go to steve. >> and it's not as bad there yesterday as it was. but it is toward the south bay. san jose to morgan hill very few clouds. some locations are clear, though. a lot of 30s.

higher clouds coming up from southern california. a few light showers down there as well. if you are toward santa cruz mountains and around parts of the east bay you might see some of the higher clouds. right there you can see it rotating back around. coming in from east to west. san jose right about the cutoff. santa cruz mountains and livermore. just high clouds there. the lows are a little warmer than they were yesterday. scots valley and bolder creek. danville is 35. petaluma clear. at least last check. 37 and cold. cole valley 38. there is cold readings in san francisco. there are different patterns here. we have the fog dense fog federal valley coming back in. but some is in the form of low clouds. for others it can be really

thick. 30s for many or very low 40s. yesterday i think san rafael's high was 32. san jose's forecast starting off with foggy conditions. we will go 55 with high clouds. some hazy sunshine later on. if it wasn't for the high clouds it would be a little warmer. 39 sacramento. also 39 fresno. hazy skies with low clouds. you stay in the 40s. over by the coast we could have upper 50s to near 60s. 40s for some. mid 50s for others. south bay it depends on if you get the clouds or fog or sun. but santa cruz 5 degrees. five-day not much of a change. it looks like rain light tuesday. time now 6:09. we start pulling together information that looks like a big power outage in the east bay. we will bring you a live report. there is a devastating

ktvu alison burns is following numbers from washington. she has the latest. good morning, alison. >> reporter: good morning to you, dave. it's unemployment rate for than year and a half. shows unemployment has dropped to 9.4% from 9.8% the month before. 103,000 jobs were added in december and the layoffs are declining. most of the hiring is in lee sure hospitality and health care. there are job losses in construction. there is fears of a double-dip recession. ben bernanke is expected to reflect nor confidence in hiring as he testifies here on capitol hill in 15 minutes and later this morning president obama is going to be visiting a small business that is booming here in the d.c. area he will talk about the jobs report and

introduce some new members of his economic team. we'll cover it all for you here on ktvu. for now we are live here in washington, d.c.. >> thank you. the new house of representatives starts debating a call to repeal health care reform. a procedural vote comes first to set the rules for a final vote next wednesday. house republicans want to repeal president obama's health care overall. the vote is mostly symbolic though democratics say they will block any vote to repeal health care reform. the state department is warning hundreds of people in wikileaks documents that their lives might be in danger. foreign government officials and even business people have been moved to safe locations. there is concern that the cables are endangering people that have supplied valuable information to the u.s.. the illinois house of representatives just voted to

abolish the death penalty in illinois. the state has had a moratorium on capitol punishment for the past two years after a dozen people sentenced to death were later found to be innocent. the legislation now moves to illinois state senate. a guide dog facility in san rafael is dealing with a highly contagious disease that is killing puppies. 35 puppies have become ill in the past week. five have died. they have parvo virus. puppies younger than four months-old are especially in danger. >> it takes extraordinary veterinarian care to nurse them through it. there is no cure to it. you have to help them get through it. >> employees at the facility are not sure how the virus got into the kennel. the infected dog has been isolated to keep the virus from spreading. let's go back over to sal.

how is the commute, sal? >> it's kind of foggy out there. i want to show you video of a car that hit a christmas tree in the roadway. chp is investigating. this is on highway 101. you can see the car, first we got a report of a christmas tree in the road. it was rolling around there and then someone rolled up on it, didn't see it, obviously they ran into it and got into a minor accident. this is oblong. this is just to demonstrate to you, you should be very careful and things can be quite dangerous out there when you can't see very well especially at this point when there was a christmas tree in the road. let's take a look at the commute here northbound 101. this is a live picture of northbound 101 at the 80 split. that traffic looks good. and if you're in the east bay livermore valley traffic looking pretty good. south bay drivers we've had a

pretty decent week. 101 to 280 looking good. let's go to steve. sal, thank you. on this friday low clouds. fog can clear areas as well. the fog things to be thickest toward the santa clara valley. there is pockets of thick fog around. there is also higher clouds. temperatures today will be very similar to yesterday. 40s an 50s. high clouds associated with that low has produced a few light showers toward central and southern california. 31 sonoma to 38 cole valley. petaluma 37. 35 danville. and scotts valley is 34. it's a foggy, low cloud pattern and that comes in from the valley and makes it to san francisco which is a little unusual. we get this but have not seen it in awhile. dense fog. 30s. 37 seems really popular.

santa rosa, fairfield. fog and some clouds. high clouds mainly toward the south bay. highs anywhere from 40 to near 60 degrees in the fog 40s if you can get through that fog mid 50s. san jose to morgan hill very foggy right now. you cannot see across the street for some. increasing clouds monday. it looks like light rain on tuesday. a san francisco company is recalling frozen tamal lays -- tamales. it con taints a dietary allergin. the product was made between april of last year and this month they were shipped across california, oregon and washington. it was soldaround the -- two u.s. banks will be alouded to operate domestic

banks. jp morgan chase and stanley morgan have been given chinese government approval for the joint ventures but they will be given one-third ownership. it will help local clients saving money by selling stocks and bonds on chinese market. blue shield to delay plans to raise its rates. a 60 day moratorium will give him time to review blue shields plans. he's also calling on lawmakers to give him power for excessive rate hikes. right now it appears there is nothing in state law that would allow him to stop the rate hikes. pope benedict the xvi is speaking out about how god created the world. christians should forget that

the bay bridge toll plaza. palo alto police have arrested one suspect and they are looking for another in a recent string of street robberies. villivuni fono was involved in three of the dozen robberies reported in the city since september. police are looking for one other suspect tied to the crime. a $10,000 reward is being offered. a new state study reveals a sharp difference in death rates in east bay hospitals. researchers took into account such risk factors as parents age and other health problems in the two-year study. gonomery medical -- threest bay hospitals had worst. contra costa medical center and oakland high land hospital. a judge has put the monthly

phone calls between accused phi garrido on hold. they are awade -- they are awaiting trial for kidnapping and holding jc gave card captive for 18 years. yesterday a judge suspended their right for to talk on the phone. a final decision is is expected later this month. time now 6:24. as a state new school chief declared a state of emergency we found out that governor jerry brown is doing belt tightening. staff members are telling us the office of the secretary of education will be eliminated because governor brown says it's redundant. brown has pledged to trim his staff by 25%. the newly elected school superintendent is hoping schools will be spared. >> we know how to help students learn we just need the financial resources to do it and we are in an emergency

right now. >> he says $18 billion has been cut over the last three years. he's pledged to review how school money is spent. apology letters have been sent to hundreds of students at california statist of los angeles after a mailing mixup. over the holiday 500 students received letters saying they have been disqualified from returning. the students were all on academic probation but the university says only about 160 student students should have received the letters. a san jose nightclub accused of covering up a violent attack says the incident is being blown out of proportion. police suspended club wet license for 30 days after a woman was knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked. police say club workers never

welcome back to the morning news. we are getting ready to ring that opening bell this morning in new york unfortunately it doesn't look like a very good day after that job report came in. there is the opening bell live. not as many jobs were created as expected last month despite the dip in the unemployment rate. again it looks like the numbers are heading down. i want to talk about this company for a second ringing in the bell. that is spark networks. it's a leading online personnel service for jewish signals. they are calling the 13th birthday. it's a very big deal in the jewish community. those are babies created by the links that sparks created there. sparks are flying in the

economy you can see. we will check in a little bit. thank you for joining to us on the ktvu morning news it is friday,7th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. an investigation is happening at a popular san francisco hotel. dangerous fumes made several hotel guests sick at the marriott. they do not know where the fumes came from. tara moriarty is joining us live. what is the latest, tara? >> reporter: talk about a mystery. this call came in as a medical. they thought these victims were suffering from sort of virus but they probably had headaches, stomach ache, nashua, and these symptoms can be confused with carbon monoxide poisoning. half a dozen people were sick. two had to be hospitalized and

four were treated here at the scene. we believe all of the victims were flight attendants with singapore airlines. the health department was here on scene where they did find elevated levels of carbon monoxide. they cannot figure out where the gas was coming from. we are told the incident happened on the fourth floor. we went and took a look inside of the hotel and based on the fire report these two rooms are across the hall from each other. carbon monoxide is a odorless, colorless gas so it's particularly dangerous when it cuts you off guard. we do not know the source of where the fumes with ever coming from. we're here live in san francisco tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, tara, thank you. we are following a big power outage in alameda.

we just learned how it happened and how this could be a very dangerous situation. kraig debro is joining us live. >> reporter: good morning. power has been restored to most people. there might be a couple that is without power right now. what has happened is alameda power company that works out here has restored the problem. they are still fixing it. very few of us have ever seen anything like this. it looks like a lava rock. here's what caused it. a power line fell to the round at will low and san antonio. this happened shortly after 5:00 p.m.. the fire department was out here and they sprayed the ground with water. it is still smoking 90 minutes later. that is how hot this fire got because of the line. this is the line that came to the ground. you can see where it was frayed off from the heat or cut apart by the power workers that were out here. then you see this black on the

ground here. if you look at a power line you will see black around it. that is the covering that protects the wire inside. this is what happens as a result of what the heat did to this covering. we spoke to a fire captain earlier today he has rarely seen anything this hot. >> it has to be pretty damage hot for the thing to still be smoking an hour later after you sprayed it with water. >> yeah. it was real hot. >> reporter: and there it is again. you can see that the ground around where that power line fell is starting to dry out. simply amazing. 90 minutes later it's still hot. power was knocked out to nearby alameda hospital. we drove by there before we got here and the power is back on there. apparently none of the patients at the hospital were injured. we will making calls to the power company. they still want to replace the line up here. apparently the power company is combing back out here. reporting live in alameda kraig

debro. >> all right before you go. you held up something to the camera earlier. what were were you holding? >> it's like from -- this we believe is what happened to the asphalt when it was melted by the fire. the fire department said that when they got out here they had flames shooting four or five feet high into the air. we believe the heat turned the asphalt into this green substance that looks like a rock from another planet. >> wow. thanks for the update from alameda. a nursing student from santa rosa is dead after a bizarre attack in puerto rico. 25-year-old kate donahue was in puerto rico on new years evening to meet her fiances family. she is one of nine people burned when her fiances uncle doused family members with fuel and set them on fire during an

engagement party. she died yesterday at miami burn center. two other family members were also killed. the uncle has refused to talk to police since his arrest. this morning homicide detectives in the east bay are searching for the gunman that killed a 24-year-old man. it happened last night at garden avenue and west eighth street. the victim was shot several times and pronounced dead on the scene. police are now asking witnesses to step forward. and hayward police are questioning two men suspected of shooting a dog. police found the dog near the south hayward bart station yesterday. they took one man into custody and found the second suspect on a train. time now 6:36 let's see what sal is watching. i know you are looking at 280 and other areas, sal. >> that is right. we are starting in the south bay just looking around to make sure we are okay there. northbound 280 traffic is okay. the fog is a little bit of an

issue. yesterday it was con finalled mostly to the northeast bay. but today you can see it's kind of visible here on our 280 shot here. northbound 280 looks good. this is a look at interstate 280 in oakland that traffic is moving well. if you are drive together bay bridge toll plaza, there is no big backup and it does seem as if i think dave asked me earlier if it will be friday light. well, judging by the picture i think so. let's go to steve. sal, thank you sir. a very good morning for you all. we still have low clouds. this morning mostly so far it seems like san jose down to morgan hill and the pass. that's where the thickest fog has been reported. at 6:00 a.m. oakland and hayward most seem clear. some of the higher clouds are coming up from a low associated down in southern california

just a few high clouds. a little bit of light rain toward southern california but the fog some low clouds are in place. around livermore and san jose south you might encounter high clouds. the overnight lows are running warmer. they are still cold. sonoma and san that lee that 31. danville is 35. petaluma and albany are 37. cole valley in san francisco and mill valley 38 degrees. everyone is close today. it's still a low cloudy foggy pattern. some of the dense fog in the central valley comes right back in and some of it is lifted a little bit if you have the fog and it doesn't burn off or not at all. it's going to be cold. if it does, then you get into the mid 50s. the higher clouds will take the edge off a little bit toward the south bay. 37 livermore.

this area and they definitely noticed a difference between drivers this morning. the cold has effected drivers overall this morning. just before 5 lost this morning the highway -- just before 5:00 this morning the state highway patrol responded to a accident. the accra rolled over, struck a tree and landed wheels up in an embankment. the driver suffered only minor injuries. we check the temperatures throughout the bay area. as we have been mentioning the temperatures have been hovering in the 30-degree range. we spoke to one man that said he had to change his routine up a little bit. reporting live from orinda this morning jade hernandez. someone angry and complaining about highway signs is suspected of mailing two

packages that ignited when they were opened. one of the packages were mailed to maryland's governor. the other one was mailed to the maryland department of transportation. the governor said the package sent to him complained about highway signs that reported suspicious activity. the packages will be analyzed at the lab. former presidential candidate john edwards has proposed to real hunt but the tabloid reported incorrectly last february the two were engaged. if the report is true this time, it would come three weeks after john edwards wife elizabeth died of breast cancer. president obama has agreed to sit down for an interview with fox news host bill oh rye lee as part -- bill oriley has

tweets on that. go ahead and tweet me if you want. i take traffic information. you can talk about whatever you like really. let's go out and take a look at westbound 80 information. it is crowded here in berkeley though. once you get to san francisco 101 northbound and southbound looking pretty good there. and the city by the bay traffic looks good on southbound 10 heading to the airport. the fog is moving into the south bay. this is 280 at 880 and the fog is creeping in. the other shot we is not completely fogged in. we did not see that yesterday. yesterday the fog was confined to the north bay. nonetheless if you are driving in fog slow it down and do not use the high beams. definitely south bay but also to the pass and valley. there is a few locations that seem clear. san jose looking thick right

again looks about the same through sunday and we will cloud it up. light rain on tuesday. >> thank you, steve. the security and exchange commission is looking into whether california violated security laws. according to the new york times somebody with information about the commission says the state did not disclose the risk. they suffered $100 billion in losses during the financial crisis it has since recovered half of that amount. let's check in on wall street. live look at the big board this morning. dow jones down about seven points to 11, 690. i will tell you that jobs report that came in was disappointing and even though the markets are down as much as they indicated right after that report came out the future is heading straight down. the european markets is also heading lower. fed chief ben bernanke says he is more optimistic about the economy but he does warn it will take years for the jobs to

recover. so not likely to be taken very well on wall street. once again google is being blamed for collecting personal information on people from other countries. they collected e-mails and other data while taking pictures for their street view map service. it's not clear yet if google will be prosecuted or penalized. google has since apologized. i know you never cry. but when a woman cries does it send a secret signal to men? we will tell you what a new study says. plus a ten-year-old hero. how he used a wrestling move to save his classmates life. !!
