good afternoon. we begin with breaking news out of south san francisco where there is police action at a bank. these are live pictures from the scene near westboro and gallup boulevard, not far from highway 280. police officers have roped off and surrounded this bank of the west branch in south san francisco. police have not confirmed exactly what is going on inside that bank. we are trying to get more details on exactly what is taking place. again, this is happening at the bank of the west in south san francisco not far from two ladies. as soon as we get more formation, we'll bring it to you latest job report shows some improvements but economists are disappointed. according to the u.s. labor department, unemployment fell to 9.4% from 9.8% the month before. that is the lowest rate in 19

months but employers added just 103,000 jobs, which is lower than the economists predicted. president obama responded from a plant in maryland. >> our mission will be to accelerate hiring and accelerating growth and that will depend on making our economy nor competitive so we are fostering new jobs and new industries and training workers. >> the president also named veteran advisor gene sperling as director of economic advisors. he served during the clinton administration and helped craft the balanced budget agreement. so what are the reactions here. tara moriarty has more from the

unemployment office in oakland. >> reporter: people have reasons to smile because of this flier from target. dozens of people have been dropping by the office here. more than 200 positions will be up for grabs, jobs ranging from cashiers to security. here in oakland, they are pulling a mass hiring event january 13th, 14th and 15th. while quinn says he will not apply for a job at target, he has been keeping his eyes open after a road snag hit his career. >> i've been a truck driver. i've been a truck driver for years. the truck driving industry is so slow now, i've changed my occupation. i tried baking. i'll give that a try. >> reporter: while the job report is encouraging, the job reports can be mills leading.

and that's because the government no longer count people as out of job if they no longer look for employment. >> we are excited that, nationally, the numbers are better than they have been in the last period-of-time. it remains to be seen, however, how that plays out locally. >> reporter: officials who run the career center here say that those local numbers won't be out for a couple of days. yesterday, the military command was here hiring for several positions. and target will be here during a three-day stretch doing onsite drug testing. they'll be conducting interviews, taking applications. so that's good news for those looking for a job because target will be hiring on the spot. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. about an hour after the unemployment report came out, fed chief ben bernanke offered

an optimistic point of view. he says that the business climate will be better because of a spend being boost by consumers and i am employers. taking in all this news right now on wall street, stocks are down mainly because of the figure showing fewer u.s. jobs created in december than expected. the dow is currently down 41 at 11655. nasdaq and s&p also down slightly. also bringing the numbers down, the massachusetts high court ruling on foreclosures. the courts ruled that wells fargo did not have a right to foreclose on two particular homes because they securitized and repackaged mortgages. virtually all bakes have the

his -- virtually, all banks have a history of doing the same thing. that's driven down bank stocks. and in silicon valley, an announcement aimed at creating more jobs especially for asian americans and pacific islanders. san francisco officials say that it's was probably vehicle exhaust that sickened four guests. the four were staying in rooms on the flute of the marriott marquis at 4th and mission. the four were taken to the hospital where they are said to be doing fine. the fire department determined the problem wascarbon monoxide and concluded it came from outside the hotel, likely from a vehicle parked near an intake

vent. the hotel said they had the same problem tuesday after and will stop putting people in those rooms for now. and the interim mayor will take over for mayor gavin newsom. former mayor willie brown had a role in it. jade hernandez talked to the former mayor. good afternoon, jade. >> reporter: good afternoon. in just the next few hours, the last session for the outgoing san francisco board of supervisors began and a vote will take place. >> i would be surpriseed if there is a surprise. there is consensus going around, at lee, based on his community ties, based on what we know about the men. >> many expect ed lee to be interim mayor but other names keep floating around. the latest public utilities

chief, ed harrington. chu still stands by ed lee who is in asia until sunday. lee has already released a statement saying he is honored to be considered for the position of interim mayor. he would be the city's first chinese american mayor. today, former mayor willie brown weighed in. >> i suspect, this afternoon, there will be an additional effort by the left to derail what obviously is a good idea and that's for a qualified person by everybody's evaluation to be the chief operating officer and manager of the city. >> reporter: on saturday, after the new board of supervise size ors is sworn in, it will officially vote to install a new mayor for one year and will meet for the first regular meeting on tuesday. mayor gavin newsom will be sworn in as lieutenant governor on monday but who will replace

san francisco d.a. pamela harris? both the mayor's office and pamela harris are having a hard time fielding district attorney candidates. as of today, the announcement of a d.a. candidate will come on sunday. board of supervise voos or ed chu withdrew his name saying that he would rather serve as board of supervisors president right here. an injunction against a group of latino members. they met at the alameda courthouse with judge freedman. the judge is trying to determine if two lawyers for one of the gang members have a conflict of interest because they work for a term that recommends mayor gene kwan. >> there is no conflict of

. the bbc is rereporting that british transportation officials have warned transportation officials about a possible al-qaeda attack. this report comes amid report of increased police presence in airports. the threat level was raised from substantial to severe for transportation system. the higher security is in

response to increased chatter but no specific threat. a marin county man is facing charges after a student was found to have a gun and knife in his pickup truck. his mom bought him the gun for hunting. the teen forgot the gun in the truck and he was reportedly remorseful. and six antioch police officers positions have been spared. the business communities has come forward to offer $50,000. because of the community support, the police officers union voted to extends contract concessions made last year until january 21st while contract negotiations continue. that means the six officers who were scheduled to be laid off

this week will keep their jobs for at least another two weeks. a man suspected of pulling a gun on alameda county sheriff deputy is now in jail. around midnight, deputies rushed to an apartment on maddox road and foothills boulevard for domestic violence calls. as deputies arrived, the suspects reportedly pulled out a gun. that's when one officer opened fire. no one was hit. a neighbor and his wife heard deputies screaming "come out with your hand up" multiple times. the deputy shot several timings at a suspect. the suspect went out the window and fled on foot. >> the suspect was later captured. no one was hurt. alameda power had to deal with a serious situation when a high live voltage wire dropped

to the pavement. the line felt on san antonio avenue and 8th street causing customers to lose power. ktvu's kraig debro has more. >> seeing what electricity can do to asphalt? the electricity came down, came down and kept burning the asphault. >> reporter: the line came down around 4:50 this morning. the energized line fish tailed wildly on the line. this is part of the line after crews cut it from the pole and deenergized it. >> i don't know how hot it was. it was really nervous. >> some of it turned to glass but prolongued exposure to the at turned it into what looked leak sea coral. >> just sounded like, you know -- >> did you look outside?

if this fog will continue. >> the fog is still in the forecast for today and also into the weekend. it will have a big impact on our temperatures. it's still fairly chilly in a few area neighborhoods. looking at the map, a few activities in the region. we'll show you this up towards santa rosa and napa and fairfield, temperatures on the chilly side, even around the bay, we still have some overcast in san jose, malpetas. looking at san francisco bay right now, 42 degrees. san francisco will eventually reach the lower 50s this afternoon but that's after a cold start this morning. with the patchy overcast in place right now, temperatures still hovering in the upper 30s in a few spots in santa rosa, fairfield. you can see the chilly numbers there. oakland right now, 45 degrees. san jose, 43 and you can see

redwood city checking in at 41. here is the overall story for the day. stubborn fog out there otherwise, hazy sunshine. we're going to hold on to that pattern. over the next week, we bring in more clouds and the possibility, in fact, a fairly good bet of some rain showers. on the satellite, we still have the system to our south, down towards los angeles but the main energy heading up to the north as far as the storm track. for today, salt day, sunday, advanced morning fog, hazy sunshine. the central valley fog will continue to seep into the bay area, at least into the morning hours and into the portions of the afternoon. here is the next system approaching the coast line. this will be a cloud producer and a chance for showers. a chance it for a few sprinkles on saturday. there will be some valley fog, and patchy fog around the bay. in the afternoon hours, still some hazy sunshine at 4:00 and into the evening once again by 10:00, the clouds will increase and that will set the stage for

activity surrounding thebank of the west. we're not going to tell you much of that activity because we don't want to give away any police tactic. but our understanding is that at least police believe that at least one or more people are inside there, holding up the bank. now, a little while ago, witnesses told us this was maybe about 15 or 20 minutes ago, that they saw what they described as bank employees coming out and maybe two or three of them. we can see officers interviewing people. we can assume that they are either customers or bank employees. but police are around. the scene is still quite active. this happened probably about an hour, hour and 15 minutes ago. there are police officers here from south san francisco, from san bruno as well as the fbi. now, we also want to show you in our location here, this kind

of borders gellard street. it has been blocked off. i can see now it's been reopened but the shopping center still has yellow tape around it, keeping people far back. we have seen police officers here in force. none of them has made any statement yet. so we don't know exactly what is going on. we have heard that perhaps there were who isages, bank employees, customers have been let out. we don't know how many are still inside but police have interviewed those that have come out. >> that is a developing story and i'm sure you'll have more many up in the next newscast. more of news after this.
