4:20 pm
slight in here, you could not quite sure, did i just feel that or not. 4.4 centered about 11 miles from morgan hill. let's go now to our chief meteorologist bill martin. you felt it as well. almost was it an earthquake or not. >> yeah, set up. i was around during the san francisco quake. julie and i were looking at each other. it had that roll feel to it. it almost felt like it was going to grow. this was that sort of gentle rolling. this is well north of the epicenter. 11miles north. we gets lots of threes and lots of two. 4.4 that's not a bad sized quake. that's where we are right now. we'll get you more information

if there's any issues in the area. we'll keep an eye on anything that develops there. we'll come in just a little closer to see what you're looking at. i'm going to dig up what faults are down there and what kind of earthquake it could have been. there's the satellite imagine. look at that fog. that is some serious serious fog. when i was back in school, climbtology and meteorologist classes at cal you would take a picture like that you would put it in a textbook. because what you're looking at here is some serious fog that is basically in the central valley. all the way down to bakers field. this fog will have a huge impact on your driving late nights and early morning. the fog formed up in the north bay as well. we saw the fog blowing through the cardenas. it's spontaneously forming in the north bay valleys and east bay valleys. san jose you got a serious amount of fog that lasted almost all day. really just in the upper 40s,
4:22 pm
mid-40s, very cool up there. that's how the weekend goes. there'll be sunshine but that fog. if it's not raining this time of year and you get a stable pattern like this, that is the deal. areas of very dense fog, very cool. and there is no rain in the forecast until early next week. and even then it's a weak weather system. you know the system, may not be enough to scour the fog out of the valley completely. so what we're going to do is we'll keep track of it for you. the temperatures tonight are going to be cold again. there have been tracks of black ice. over 17 on the way to santa cruz late nights and early mornings. i will tell you if you have business in the valley, try to drive later. wait till 9:00 or 10:00 until the visibility comes up. we're going to dig up some more on that earthquake and we'll have the five day forecast, see you back here. speaking of that earthquake, we got a bit of new information. our producers have been making

back now to the breaking news that we're covering. a light earthquake that hit at 4:10 this afternoon it measured 4.1 in magnitude. and it happened between morgan hill and san jose. about 11 miles north of morgan hill. here at the ktvu news studio we did feel it.
4:31 pm
it was a slight rolling if you will. almost hard to tell whether it was an earthquake because it was so slight. but we are probably about 50 to 60 miles or so from the epicenter. joining us now on the phone is epinhimer from the geological center. what can you tell us about this earthquake. >> the earthquake happened in the calav era s fault. it's a very active section of the fault. it's pretty close to where the morgan hill earthquake of april 24, 1984 occurred. that was a magnitude 8.6 earthquake. it's a fault that has a combination of stuck patches that fail in big earthquakes like the 1984 earthquake and there was one more recently back october 31st 2007. and then there are these little patches on the fault that creep and with smaller stuck patches holding up the motion and they
4:32 pm
occasionally pop up in magnitudes threes and fours. >> i'm sorry, i was wondering is a 4.1 enough to cause any damage? >> no, not at this depth. if it was right underneath your feet and pretty shallow, we did see some that caused damage from magnitude four but it's really unusual. at this death i -- this depth, at this point i would be surprised if there was any damage. >> everybody who lives in the bay area has heard growing up that we're going to get the big one. what does this show in that picture. >> this happened near the 1984 earthquake: we don't think that portion of the fault has accumulated enough stress to rerupture until probably the year 2025.
4:33 pm
that's our best estimate. so in terms of could this trigger an earthquake on the hayward fault which i think is more concern to most people that's extremely unlikely. we have magnitude four earthquakes several times in the bay area, and history shows the amount of shaking from those earthquakes is not enough to trigger a magnitude seven earthquake: i don't want to flynnish the possibility that there could be large earthquakes -- i don't want to diminish the possibility that there could be large earth earthquakes in the bay area, but i don't think that will trigger a large earthquake. >> 11 miles north of morgan hill, you heard mr. epinhimer say 4.1 in all likelihood did not cause any damage. but any time there's an
4:34 pm
earthquake here in the bay area it does rattle some nerves. >> we did feel it here in the studio. we have lights over head and we saw those swinging. we felt the roll. and we're going to go to chief meteorologist bill -- and we're going to go to tom vacar, he's been making phone calls to see what people had noticed. tom-- >> we checked with vta, they stopped their track for a very short period of time. that will almost certainly mean caltrain probably had no problems they are still checking. that is the current situation on that 4.1 which hit at about 4:10 this afternoon. >> tom, thank you very much for checking. right now we want to take you to richmond. richmond police took action against those responsible for
4:35 pm
new years eve gunfire. officers went door to door hoping to educate the community on what could be a deadly celebratory tradition. john sasaki is now in richmond with more on this story. >> reporter: look around richmond and you can see countless homes that could be targets. targets for bullets that have no aim because the shooter just fired into the air. that's the sound of just one of the 56 56 incidents that the shot spotter picked up on new year's eve. >> what goes up has to come down. it does sometimes strike a person. it often strikes some piece of property causing damage. and this is a big concern for us. >> reporter: in each case, police know where the shots originated. so today officers visited those neighbors. >> we're doing just a follow up to our shots fire program. >> reporter: it took no time to find someone who heard gunfire
4:36 pm
on new year's eve. >> i do every year. >> you do every year. >> what's that like? >> it's a little disconcerting but normal. >> reporter: but this woman says she didn't hear any at all because her new year's eve plan always involve going some where else. >> we have children around so we just leave the area. >> why? >> because of that specifically. because it gets too rowdy. we have heard them before. >> there's a real educational component here that we're trying to capitalize on this opportunity to educate our community. >> reporter: officers didn't arrest anyone, they gave residents these fires that explain the dangers of celebratory gunfire. and a judge delayed ruling on a key issue in the case. today's court hearing focused on the attorney for gang
4:37 pm
members who are fighting that so called gang injunction. the city argued the attorneys have a conflict of interest because they work for a firm that represents major gene quan and that employs a city council member. the defense refuted that claim. >> there is no conflict of interest. we have the appropriate ethical walls in place to make sure that any communication with jane bruner is not conveyed to us. >> a decision on today's hearing is due next month. coming up in just a couple of minute, a live interview with the 49ers new head coach jim harbaugh. also ahead a white house summit right here in the bay area. what the meeting of minds was all about.

4:42 pm
father who was a long time football coach and your brother john with the ravens. were they all intergal parts in this decision? >> they were, and you know i don't do too many things without talking to them, to god, and my wife. and what i felt in my heart, this was the perfect competitive challenge and platform and you know be around these profootball players and the best in the world at what they do is to be in the national football league. the greatest sport that's ever been invented and to be able to do it for this organization, the san francisco 49ers,

legendary. i'm going to move on with a humble hard, but it's hard to hide my enthusiasm that's coursing through my vains right now. >> you're not everyone going to have to move. >> no just go to work. that's one thing that's very exciting. we'll be able to reduce a lot of drag when it comes to moving the family and you know looking for a place to stay and things like that. so we'll be able to cut some drag and get right to work. >> coaching in the nfl and coaching in college is different. i hear people, observers, i won't call them experts but observers that call you a football guy. what does that mean? >> i love football, i love coaching, and you know people might underestimate me because i'm a college football coach and i hope they do. and you know because that will be a competitive advantage. >> you're talking about bringing in the west coast offense. this is where the west coast offense is instituted. so you're bringing it back. what are the dynamics of that

that is so intriguing and what does it have that you know about it so well. >> the terminology for one, it's a proven system. it's a winning system, it's won super bowls, it's won championships. you know it's been trouble shot, it's been combed through. and it can encompass about everything that you could want to do in an offensive attack. so therefor it has the ability to incorporate players talents and their abilities and maximize them and have the opportunity to do it. >> and people say you a quarter away from getting a quarterback. what are you going to do? >> get a quarterback. we're going to call them.
4:45 pm
there's the draft, free agency, there's enues but you know first and formost i want to recruit the guys we y. >> coach, the 18th coach for the 49ers. >> and i love how he says he's going to cut the drag and get right to work. >> and two brothers now coaching in the nfl. >> we'll be right back with more right after this.
