condition after being shot in the head. but doctors say they are optimistic about her chances of recovery. they say she's responding n onverbally to simple commands. the next major step will be to see if she can breathe on her own. six people were killed. more than a dozen ears injure -- dozen others injured. the accused, jared loughner, bought a .9 millimeter pistol at a shop in arizona a few weeks ago. they say he bought the gun after first being denied at a walmart for strange behavior. authorities say three people helped stof loughner from -- helped stop loughner from k illing more. police say a woman ran up, g rabbed the empty magazine and

then grabbed the full magazine he was trying to load. and then two men grabbed loughner, saturday on him until police arrived. >> one of the men killed was -- worked for gabrielle giffords. he was one who organized saturday's event in tucson. his family said he just wanted to help people. zimmerman owned a sociology degree from uc santa cruz and graduated with honors in 2002. he was also engaged to be married. coming up in a few minutes. we'll take a look at the reaction on capitol hill to that shooting in arizona. then at 7:45, we'll take you live to tucson to get an update and then at 8:00, we'll bridge you the moment of silence led by president obama at the white house. 7:02. george gascon is at the center of the shake up at san f rancisco's hall of justice. the city's now former police

chief is beginning his first full day as district attorney. it's a move that caught nearly everyone offguard. tara mori temperaturety joins u s -- tara tara moriarty joins us from san francisco. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. we've been talking with people in the police department. some people feel betrayed by this. he will be needed to the -- h eaded to the d.a.'s office today, not the police d epartment. now, in a rare conference, o utgoing gavin newsom introduced gascon as the new d.a. >> and i believe that i can o ffer something to this role that will be somewhat unique and having the understanding of policing. >> reporter: gascon says he will run for reelection in the

fall. his replacement is interim c hief, gascon's former los angeles police colleague. >> the bad news, now we enter into another period of uncertainty and now we have a -- this will be our -- since i've been a cop, this will be my 14th chief. so what we need right now and what we have needed is some consistency. >> reporter: he says don't count him out for the permanent chief position. insiders tell ktvu there are at least a handful of candidates for the job. ed lee and the san francisco commission will be starting the search for a new chief. but we're told this time around, the search will not go national. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. the "mercury news" reports that san jose's city manager is planning to interview several

fine -- several final iists this week -- finalists this week for police chief. elementary school students will be returning to class this morning and some have no idea of a deadly stabbing that happened on the school campus. investigators worked through the night trying to clear that crime scene. paul chambers is live at kawana elementary school this morning with the details out there. good morning, paul. >> reporter: good morning, dave. police say it's too soon to say if this was gang-related. but we are in an area that has gang tagging throughout. let me show you the memorial put together for the man who was stabbed. where did it happen? it happened right across the street here at this elementary school. that was the scene of the fatal stabbing. in a few hours from now, s tudents will return to school, as they said. the victim is 20-year-old juan

carlos angel espiraza from santa rosa. police say just after 5:00 on saturday, they got a call of what they first thought was a shooting. once on scene, officers found two knives, blood and angel e spiraza on the campus. police believe he may have been involved in a knife fight. they say he was hanging out with friends when he was approached by two men. officers found him with several stab wounds. he was taken to an area hospital where he died from his injuries. officers spent the day cleaning up their investigation and c leaning up the scene. now, since this incident h appened on the school campus, we're told several grief counselors will be on hand to help teachers and staff talk to the students about violence. they would not say if the s tabbing was gang-related. they've not released a description of the killer. we do know there is a $2500 reward being offered. if you know anything about this incident, you are asked to call

sal you've been talking about black ice problems on the roads throughout the area. >> that's right. we actually had a crash on the antioch bridge that police say may have been due to the ice and people slipping around. they are clearing this now. that's not comme direction but there could be slowdowns. also, ice is reported in contra costa county. highway 4, traffic is busy. fog and ice are a problem in contra costa county on 680, highway 4 and on highway 24. just be careful, especially if you run into a patch of black ice. the best advice is not to stop suddenly, bring your car to a slow stop just by easing off the gas pedal. this is the westbound bay b ridge, it's backed up. no problems on the way to the city. if you are driving in san jose, it seems a little bit better here. 280 looks good. that's northbound 280 on the right, driving through downtown. >> let's go to steve.

we do have some fog towards the east bay. our observer michael in the c ity, he just sent me some information. on january 5th at 9:45 p.m., san francisco was 50 degrees. has not had a temperature of 50 since. see if you live in -- that's cold. this is colder than sometimes we get in july. it's been really cold. everybody has been -- everybody has been cold. this happens a lot. we can get a stretch, sometimes a week, sometimes a month and a half where we don't get any r ain. it will end tomorrow on the 11th and probably light rain into the 12th. and after that, the five, t en- day outlooks look dry. this does not look like a bullish month for any rape. we start out -- for any rain. we start out with 30s, 20s. the fog has moved into the city and it's creeping back in. cloudy tomorrow, light rain.

backseat of an suv, two blocks away from the mexicali nightclub where there was an apparent shootout two hours earlier. police say they found two hours dead inside the club. neighbors describe what they heard. >> i just heard three gunshots that were close by here. and-- we went inside and then we came outside to check what was going on because we heard a car take off real fast. a fourth victim is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. police say there are three to four suspects but have no description. with the facebook website

welcome back. playboy magazine gets its w ish -- a buyout deal. playboy founder, hugh hefner, sweetened his offer to buy back the magazine and the rest of the playboy empire. his latest bid is $207 million. that's 18% higher than the stock valued last friday. hugh hefner is already playboy's largest shareholder.

the magazine has struggled the last couple of years, losing a lot of readers and advertisers to the internet. facebook is trying to snuff out a strange rumor. the super market tabloid r eported that mark zuker berg wanted his own -- zuckerberg life back and planned to close the facebook stores on m arch 15th. that triggered a weekend panic among some people who issued tweets begging fake to stay open -- begging facebook to stay o pen. we'll learn more details this morning about a plan set to save millions of dollars. a plan to make all tolls electronic will be submitted on thursday. if approved, the bridge will become cashless in 2013. that will save $16 million over

the man accused of a mass shooting in arizona is due in court today. 22-year-old square red loughner will appear -- jared loughner will appear in a phoenix courtroom at 1:00 p.m. our time. he's accused of opening fire outside a supermarket where congresswoman, gabrielle giffords, was meeting with con stitch swepts on saturday -- cop stitch wents on saturday -- con stiff -- constituents. doctors are op mystic about her recovery. she's in a medically induced coma and cannot speak but she's able to respond to simple commands. one of the many tragedies in that arizona shooting was the death of a 9-year-old girl. christina green had just been elected to the student council at her elementary school in tucson she went to saturday's

meet and greet with gabrielle giffords to find out more about the political process. she was killed by a single bullet during that shootout. christina's parents talked about losing their daughter who, incidentally, was born on september 11th, 1991, the very day of the terrorist attacks in new york. >> it does say something about our society that my daughter was born on a tragic day and went out on a tragic day. >> she was a great friend, a great daughter, a great sister. i'm so proud of her and i just want everybody to know. >> i meant to say 1991 -- 2001. >> 2001. >> forgive me. christina was remembered by members of her church. she was an enthusiastic student. she hoped some day to become a politician.

7:31. at 11:00 this move, governor brown will release details about his plan to deal with c alifornia's $28 billion budget deficit. brown has said he wants to shift the responsibility of many programs from the state level to counties and cities. he also wants to cut government bureaucracy by merging departments and programs. there are reports the governor will propose extending some temporary tax hikes that are set to expire in july. gavin newsom is getting r eady to join governor brown in sacramento during his final hours as mayor of san francisco. today at 1:00 p.m. new some will be sworn in as california's new lieutenant- governor. newsom says he's eager to help governor brown tackle the s tate's huge crisis. >> it's a fine line. jerry brown understands that better than anyone. he's already picked up the tone and tenor of the times and gets it just as well or better than anyone. >> newsom says the experience they share as big city mayors

st. francis drive all the way to oregon express south bay. now, a few hours -- expressway. now, a few hours ago, the sergeant told me the warning to be more vigilant has been received in this neighborhood this latest attack happened on st. francis just after mid nye. the victim, a 35-year-old woman, told police a man approached her as she parked her car in front of her home, pointed a gun at her and demanded her purse. the woman handed it over. the victim was not hurt and later described the thief as a young african-american men, clean-shaven, wearing a f lat- rimmed baseball cap, gray hooded sweatshirt and police cannot say if this is connected to recent robberies since september 20th. the last robbery reported last month, in december. the department has made seven arrests which has closed a few

staff room. the victim is 0-year-old juan car lease angel from santa rosa. he was killed over the weekend. now, plus say -- police say just after 5:00 on saturday. they got a call about a s hooting. officers found two knives and blood and angel on the campus. police say he may have been involved in a knife fight. family members say he was h anging out at the school t alking to friends when he was approached by two other men. when officers arrived, they found him with several stab wounds. he was late taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries. officials spent the day cleaning up and finishing their investigation. the principal says he plans to go door to door talking to the importance about being vigilant if they sigh or hear an incident on school groundses. the police would not say if the

says he has no interest for f unning -- in running for a full time for mayor in the tall. palo alto police are saying there's been a rash of r obberies. the most recent incident, a woman robbed in her own d riveway. jade hernandez is there with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the sergeant with the palo alto police department told us this rash of robberies since september. they have a common thread. they have all taken place near a thoroughfare. we know this was up to orchard expressway. the spokeswoman for the department is out of town this morning the so the department is unable to provide an on- camera interview for you. but we've already spoken to several officers this morning, including a sergeant to get more information about this kay. that sergeant told me by phone, the warning for neighbors to be

more vigilant has paid off. the department has received a lot of calls about unfamiliar vehicles in this area where the robbery took place. it did happen on saturday morning just after midnight. a -- along st. francis drive. the victim, a 35-year-old a man her after she parked in front of her home. he pointed a gun at her and demanded her purse. the woman handed it over. the victim was not hurt and later described the thief at a young african-american man with a medium build wearing a gray baseball hat. the department has made s evennests which have solved several of these cases but the description of saturday's thief matches the one given in many of the open investigations. now, fortunately the woman in this weekend's robbery was not hurt. but palo alto police are sit investigating all of the other

for the shooting. we checked with oakland police this morning. they are still searching for the gunman who shot and killed a 15-year-old boy. he was a sophomore at fremont high school. homicide investigators say he was shot and killed outside a market on bancroft avenue late saturday afternoon. police won't get any help for surveillance video. we oned at least -- we counted at least three cameras outside where the killing took place but the manager says the cameras do not work. one of the onramps of highway -- of highway at tully road will be closed. they will close the ram at 11:00 tonight. they won't reopen it until 5:00 p.m. on friday. so to get on it, go south on mclaughlin avenue, turn left on the capitol expressway. this is part of the improvement project that will add another
