with paramedics on scene. a gas leak caused a big scare for people in a san francisco neighborhood overnight. ktvu channel 2 reporter kraig debro joins us with the details. morning. >> reporter: good morning, pam. i just talked to pg&e. i couldn't get ahold any information. they said i have to call back later. i tried to talk to the people here. that are asleep now which is perfectly understandable. take a look at the homes here. you can see a lot of them have their windows open. that's because they want to vent rate lathe some of that gas out there. somebody smell or heard gas leaking in the middle of the night around 11:30 last night. fire department arrived on the scene within minutes. while they were here starting to evacuate residents of ten homes pg&e went to find out where the gas was leaking. the source was the garage but underneath the floor. but in thirstiness stance the

valve wasn't working. the gas leak wasn't the only potential danger during this operation. . >> it was a -- >> it was a high percentage of gas in the home. so when you flick switches it could cause a spark so we had it shut off from the pole instead. >> reporter: now that operation didn't take too long. in fact, the whole thing was over in two hours. some of the people that were forced out of their homes about ten and all went back into their homes. we are not sure if anybody did. some people may have wanted to stay out. again, this was underneath the garage floor. we are not sure what caused that. we are not sure why the valve wasn't working. this could be a continuing problem. perhaps some of the neighbors searching for more longer term

solution. reporting live in san francisco kraig debro ktvu channel 2 news. we are following developing news from the peninsula. investigators at belmont are looking at this. looking at the cause of an early morning apartment house fire. six people were hurt in this including two people that jumped from the burning building. the fire caused $1 million in damages. we will bring you a live update from the scene coming up at 6:30. santa rosa police have made an arrest in the deadly weekend stabbing at an elementary school. officers found the body of juan carlos in the hallway of kawana elementary school. they found the body of raul vega. they believe the killing is tied to the rising violence of santa rosa. also this morning oakland

police are searching for a suspect in the homicide. friends drove the victim to highland hospital where he died a short time later. 6:04. the first formal memorial service for the victims of the arizona mass shooting will be held tonight at a church in tucson. president obama is expected to go there to be at one of the memorial services tomorrow. six people were killed. 14 others were hurt outside of a grocery store where gabby gifford was holding a conference. miss gifford who was shot in the head remains in critical condition this morning. the doctors are saying she's been making purposeful movements including a thumbs up sign. neurosurgeons say there have been no additional swell on her brain but the next couple of days are critical. the suspected gunman in the

mass shooting is being held without bail this morning following his first court appearance. jared loughner briefly answered questions in court yesterday and told the judge he understood the channels against him. loughner was shackled. there was a cut against his white eye. january 24th will be his next court appearance. now the shootings have renewed the gun control debate. coming up in ten minutes we'll have more on that in a live report from washington. time now 6:06 it has happened in other parts of the country and world now dozens of dead birds have been spotted right here in the bay area. ktvu jade hernandez is joining us live. she is in sonoma county. what happened, jade? >> reporter: it's an unsolved mystery. the dead birds were found off of highway 101 in sonoma county. the california highway patrol reported to a scene only seen in arkansas and louisiana.

more than 100 boards have been clustered on the ground. you are looking at a picture court see of the press democrat. the birds were all the same type and being tested by a biologist right now. no immediate word on what caused the birds death. the chp who we contacted this morning contacted the california department of fish and gain. you might remember on new years eve 5,000 red winged blackbirds fell from the sky. they died to blunt trauma to all organs. more recently 500 birds were found in louisiana. 300 miles from the arkansas incident. all are under investigation and we hope to hear back from the california highway patrol for more information about what happened here. reporting live jade hernandez. san francisco is expected to have an interim mayor by this afternoon. the man to be opponented is

welcome back to the morning news. president obama will participate in a memorial service tomorrow night. and already there is a lot of speculation about what he will say in response to the tragedy. as ktvu alison burns tells us gun control groups tell us he needs to show leadership in the gun laws. alison is in our washington, d.c. newsroom. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, to you pam. dianne feinstein and others are

preparing legislation in response to the shooting. the focus is on the type of weapon allegedly used by suspect jared lee loughner. it's a glock semiautomatic like this. he was able to fire off 33 bullets without reloading. now gun control groups want to reinstate a federal ban on the high capacity clips but already they are running into opposition from gun right supporters. >> i have a great hesitancy there when you start talking about banning weapons and banning ammunition because again this this is part of our constitution. the second amendment. we need to have the right to bear arms in this country. >> reporter: another focus is how the suspect who had an issue of mental issues could get a gun. there is no indication that president obama is going to wade into the gun control issue which has been a political hot potato for years.

reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. just hours ago hillary clinton arrived in yemen. she is working to strengthen american ties with a fragile ally. secretary clinton is urging yemen to play a more active role in the international war against terrorism. and today vice president joe biden will continue his announced visit to afghanistan. he will make a stop at a military training center in kabul. the vice president is reviewing the efforts to prepare afghan forces to take over from the u.s. coalition. earlier the vice president met with general david petraeus. he is coordinating those efforts with the afghan officials. he arrived in afghanistan yesterday. the trip was kept under wraps until he arrived for security reasons. the ground breaking nuclear

deal takes effect deal. it allows both nations to exchange nuclear energy technology and engage in joint commercial nuclear power ventures. the deal also calls for them to work together to stop the spread of nuclear weapons arounds world. federal officials will hear when safety devices help save lives in light plane actions. right now they are optional for light planes. however some aircraft owners choose to have them installed. the crash is a plane with those features is studied today. a protest is planned today in san francisco marking the ninth anniversary of the guantanamo bay prison. the activist plan to wear jump

suits and hoods. they say they will read the names of the detainees still being held at guantanamo. federal job bias complaints are at a record level lead by a surge in workers complaining discrimination. they received 100,000 complaints during the 2010 fiscal year. the spike began in months after congress approved changes to the americans with disabilities act. the changes made it easier for people with treatable conditions to claim they are disabled. our time is 6:19. let's see what is happening in your commute. what is happening out there? >> things are getting busier. for the most part things are doing well. northbound looks pretty good if you are driving to the coliseum area or to the airport if you are driving through here

traffic will be remaining on time here. this is a look at the san mateo bridge. the traffic on the san mateo and dumbarton bridge looking over to the peninsula. if you are driving to 680 pleasanton that looks good driving to san jose. here is steve. sal, cloudy skies. our lows are cool but not as bad as the last couple of mornings. we will see light rain. temperatures in the upper 30s mainly the 40s though. in fact, satellite picture shows our system falling apart. it's there. it will give us cloudy skies. some of that green has turned to white. especially in wake county. there have been reports of light snow. windy conditions. some of that cold air is trapped. 39 fairfield but then 40s for everyone else. far cry from the 25 and 29s we had yesterday. our system swinging in will go to the north it will fall apart. we will have to deal with it.

good morning, right now traffic is moving along pretty well if you are driving on 24 westbound coming up to the tunnel. no major problems on interstate 680 or highway 4. the winter storm that has been blasting the south for the past few days is moving north. that storm is expected to spread to ohio and could hit the northeast later in the week. at least nine weather related traffic deaths have been reported across the south and forecasters now predict that new york may get as much as 12 inches of snow. time now 6:25. a san jose nightclub may have to close their doors for good after a violent night that left three people dead.

the case unfolded at the mexicali club saturday night. police say two men were shot to death. the body of a third victim was found in the back of an suv not far from the club. police are teling us there were no security guards at the club that is a violation of san jose entertainment permit. >> every club that is offering live entertainment and serving alcohol is required to have security on the premise. >> the club is now temporarily shut down. but because of the violation it may face permanent closure. as for the victims their role is not clear. all three men are from another country. their names have been not be released. information on the three to four suspects that's also pretty vague. meantime the san francisco club that was also the site of a deadly shooting is suing the city. jelly jazz club has been fighting eviction since the

summertime when a man from richmond was gunned down outside of the club. the club is claiming it's only being kicked out because it complained about leaky sewage pipes while the city was being considered to host the next america's cup. claims of any retaliation are without substantiation. the humane society is hoping reward money will help find the person that shot a sea lion in the head. a $2500 reward is being offer. he is blind in one eye and will not be able to return to the wild. it's the latest development in a pipeline disaster in san bruno. pg&e responds to a disturbing discovery. i'm tara moriarty live in belmont where two dozen people have been evacuated because of an early morning fire. we will hear the stories of

hospital. four were treated for smoke inhalation. two suffered from broken bones from jumping from their balcony. luckily everyone is okay including lance woo. he said he smelled smoke, saw it, and grabbed his cat who was scared and hidden under the bed. >> i literally flipped my bed over to grab her. i got her and ran out to the balcony and waited there and firemen came with a ladder and i handed my cat off to the fireman that went down with the cat and i climbed down the ladder. >> reporter: again about 25 people were evacuated and those folks were brought here to the senior center. the chief says all of the smoke detectors and alarms were working inside of the building. none of the injuries are life threatening. the damage is estimated around a million dollars. now they will work to term how this fire started. we are live in belmont i'm tara

moriarty. pg&e announced the suspension of a pressure test on natural gas pipelines like one performed on the san bruno pipeline that exploded. the utility performed that test about ten months before the san bruno explosion. experts say it could have exes a per rated any existing weakness in the line. representative jackie spear that represents the san bruno district says she is outraged that a high pressure test was performed on a 50-year-old pipe. tonight the san bruno council will help donated blast victim. they have been handing out almost $400,000 in aid. most people say it should have been handed out quickly. city officials will decide the details who is eligible and who should get more than others. mourners in arizona will gather for the first memorial service for the victims of that mass shooting in tucson. president obama is expected to go to arizona to be at one of

the memorial services tomorrow. so far at least six people are known to be dead. 14 were hurt outside of a grocery store where democratic congresswoman gabrielle gifford was holding an event. congresswoman gifford who was shot in the head during that rampage remains in critical condition this morning. coming up in ten minutes from right now, we will take you live to tucson to get the very latest on that mass shooting. richmond place are questioning three suspects in the fatal shooting of a 16-year- old boy right outside his grandmothers home. it happened yesterday afternoon on fleming avenue. desean had just left the home when someone ran up to him and fired several shots. he was pronounced at the scene. police spotted the suspects car two hours after the shooting and took the three people into custody. but investigators still don't know what prompted the deadly attack. time now 6:34. a $5,000 reward is being

offered by nevada police to catch the gunman involved in a shooting. police are still looking for suspects in the january 3rd shooting. it happened at the hamilton marketplace center. two people were wounded and a 22-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder. she was not the shooter. they say several other people may have been involved. massive numbers of birds have dropped dead from the sky elsewhere in the country. but now that bizarre mystery continues here in the bay area. ktvu jade hernandez joins us from sonoma county with updates. >> reporter: good morning. authorities were seeing these dead birds in states far away from california and now they are show up here in sonoma county. more than 100 dead birds were found clustered here on the

worried. the attacker a large bullmastiff. the smaller dog was left bloody. the larger dog's owner was also hurt possiblely has a broken arm. the woman who owns the small dog says this was not the first time that larger dog had attacked. this week state lawmakers consider governor brown to tackled the huge budget deficit. it includes a $1.7 billion cut to medi cal. and an 8-10% pay cut for most state workers. however, it does not make any reduction to k-12 education. brown is also counting on voters to approve an extension of taxes in a special election. now the governor unvailed his budget plans during a state capital news conference yesterday. brown says it's time to totally rework the finances of state government to make up for big mistakes in the past. >> for ten years this state has

put together its budget with gimmicks and tricks and unrealistics expectations that have pushed this state deeper and deeper into debt. >> california's newly elected democratic governor says he's counting on support from the republicans in sacramento but many are openingly expressing their reservations with the governors budget plan. 6:37. santa clara county supervisors meet at 9:00 a.m. today. they will talk about the growing budget problem. it includes a proproposal to i -- proposal to eliminate 407% of social workers. they say the cut back would endanger the safety of children and many others. let's go back to sal for a look at traffic. it's getting busy contra costa county. >> yes, it is. we are seeing slow traffic on highway 4. not only in bay point but in antioch. it's not unusual but it's

getting slow early. we don't see any weather that is going to get in the way. westbound bay bridge backed up for a ten minute delay. if you are trying to get to oakland to san francisco the race is already on. the metering lights are on at the toll plaza. once you make it on to the bridge it's okay. northbound 280 traffic looks okay so far. so does 85 and 101. no major problems coming the other way if you are driving from redwood city to palo alto. so far so good. here is steve. >> thank you. cloudy skies. very light rain. very light. mainly cloudy skies. the overnight lows are warmer. we've had a stretch here going back eight days now with dry weather. nothing unusual about that. today it will probably end for a few but not for all. this is an extremely weak system. we have not had any rain since the second. some of these can last a long

time. some can last a week or so. after today and tomorrow it looks like five or ten days after no rain. we could go into the 21st and 22nd. at 9:45 it was 50 degrees. it did not hit 50 degrees until it was 2:45 yesterday. that is 113 continuous hours of 49 or lower. little system just sliding by. a lot of clouds. the overnight lows are in the 30s and 40s. some of that green light rain is turning to white snow. especially up toward lake county. we've had a few reports there. wind continues to kick up at seals along the coast. i've seen above the caldecott 20-25. 39 fairfield. everyone else in the 40s here. 40 for concord. 28 tahoe. same for reno.

welcome back to the morning news. it's now 6:44. mourners will gather in tucson arizona to remember the victims of the weekend shooting rampage that killed six people. meanwhile congresswoman gabrielle gifford medical team is optimistic about her recovery. paul is live. good morning, paul. >> reporter: good morning, pam. they tell us that congresswoman gifford has been able to give a thumbs up and has been reaching for her breathing tube. that has given her optimism. on the other front the suspect of the shoot willing be back in court for his preliminary hearing. jared lee loughner heard the charges against him. two counts of murder. two counts of attempted murder. and one count of attempting to

kill a member of congress. he made his first court appearance monday head shaven and wearing a brown prison jump suit. he did not make a statement or enter a plea but he did answer the judge's questions in a clear voice. he made people in class uncomfortable. >> he was definitely off. that was definitely something that was apparent as soon as i met him. >> reporter: some of his alleged victims remain hospitalized including gabrielle giffords. among the six people killed in the attack was nine-year-old christina taylor green. her parents say they are making plans to bury their little girl. >> we didn't feel like we would be picking out caskets at nine years old. we had to do that today. >> reporter: news of the tragedy reached all the way out into space as her brother-in- law reacted to the shooting.
