school board in the 1990. the superintendent sent an e- mail saying, i know you join me in keeping suzy, her family and friends in your memories. the family of the shooting suspect jared lee loughner released a statement. it may not make any difference, but we wish that we could change the heinous events of saturday. and members say that the vigil is a nonpartisan event and that everyone is welcome. other community leaders and clergy say they will attend. the arizona legislature passed and sent to the governor

an emergency bill related to the tucson shooting. it's a response from news that people from the westboro baptist church plan to picket thursday's funeral of . one lawmaker says volunteers will also form a human shield to block the protesters from view of victim family members. the tucson shooting appeared to have caused a surge of guns. nationwide, sales climbed an average of 5%. the biggest increase was in arizona where sales soared by 60%. gun dealers say people are worried that the government will limit gun and ammunition

sales in the wake of the shooting in tucson. just days before the shooting in tucson, congress took a vote that some say leaves house members. the house voted slash it's on budget by $25 million. scott mcfarland has details from washington. >> reporter: sifting through 27 pages of white house expenses we found a lot of security spending. the thing is the u.s. house just ordered members to cut their expenses. here in washington an 1800 member multi member police force blankets the white house. but back home if they want office security, alarms, cameras, they have to square away money from their budget. every year, barbara lee spokesman says she spends

millions a year for security. each local member of congress must now chop $70,000 out of his or her yearly budget at what former house staffer brad fitch says the the worse possible time. >> might that mean they may have to make cut backs in other areas, yes. >> reporter: that will leave a hard choice, to cut back on security or space or staffers. >> legislating can have a lot of unintented consequences. to put more on our credit card, our nation's credit card that we don't know if it's going to help the nation, it's not going to help right now. >> reporter: the thing is i'm told that's too expensive and

six people hospitalized and dozens forced from their homes including a pregnant woman who made a desperate leap to safety after fire broke out at department complex. it all happened on carlmont drive. tara moyarti has the story. >> reporter: intense flames lashed out trapping more than a dozens people on their balcony. at least three decided to jump. >> you're risking your life. you want to get out of the building. >> fire originated in unit 13. >> reporter: the man who lived in the apartment where the fire started actually walked through the fire in order to escape. he came outside, stood

forget. >> reporter: in belmont, tara moyarti, channel 2 news. and more than a dozen people were evacuated when a leak developed in a pipe under a homes garage on 33rd avenue. firefighters and pg & e crews were called around 11:00 last night. the pipe was old and it was damaged in the first attempt to squeeze off the gas, the leak was capped a short time later and crews replaced the old pipes with new ones. an attorney for o.j. simpson is publishing a document saying that he can prove that his client really was innocent. simpson was acquitted despite an overwhelming sentiment that he was guilty. but bailey says six people were lined up to testify. including a forensic scientist and a man who may have seen someone else do the murders. michael jackson's doctor will stand trial for

manslaughter. an l.a. county judge ruled today there is enough evidence to try dr. conrad murray in jackson's death. jackson died of an overdoze of propophol. an la county coroner said that murray would still be responsible for jackson's death because he provided the drugs and failed to monitor his patient carefully. three people accused in a corruption scandal want the city to pay their court costs. the three defendants have been charged with misappropriating city funds and did little or nothing for their work. the accused say they did nothing wrong and want the city to pay for their legal

expenses. the ntsb released a study on whether air bags and shoulder lap seat belts might be beneficial in those aircrafts. right now they are optional on small planes. ntsb study looked at 150 accidents over three years. in at least 20 cases, air bags were found to have reduced chest and head injuries to pilots and passengers. well that winter storm that's been hitting the south is traveling up the east coast and to the midwest. the effects are being felt by travelers right here in the bay area. flights from san francisco to chicago are being delayed up to 3.5 hours. it's been snowing there all day and up to 5-inches of snow is expected to fall. elsewhere the carolinas are blanketed with a foot of snow. new york could get up to an inch of it. conditions are so bad in some areas, as many as six southern states including tennessee and georgia have

declared a state of emergency. the rain here combined with the cold weather is increasing the demand on homeless shelters. for some of the most vulnerable homeless there is no relief and no protection. robert handa is live to explain. >> reporter: we're at a homeless shelter where many homeless have come this evening to try to escape the cold and rain. but some families, some with children could literally be left outside in the cold. near by the homeless kindell family, mike, karen and their grandson must find their own protection because most shelters can't find children. this last week they stayed in door ways and abandoned buildings. >> the lord has been blessing us where it's nice that we don't have to worry about the weather. >> now that the rain is coming what are you going to do? >> now that the rain is coming,

but says state cuts will cause problems. live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. well let's talk more about the weather now and whether we're going to get more rain, over to our meteorologist mark tamayo who's filling in for bill tonight. >> a few rain showers this evening. nothing too extreme. the totals were about .2. we had a few scattered light showers, this was the scene in san francisco right around 12:00. you can see the showers moving on shore. mostly on the light side but enough to trigger the windshield wipers. we still have some rain activity. here's a closer inspection right now, you can see the coverage from santa cruz to boulder creek to los cados. reporting mostly cloudy skies. we move the maps to the north, right around petaluma, nevado and san rafael. those darker shades of green do

correspond to more moderate cells. as far as rainfall totals over the past 24 hours not impressive at all. .01, san jose .03 and livermore just a few hundreds as well. a few showers out there. by 8:00 a chance, by 10:00 just a scattered chance. overnight low tonight, not as cold as it has been. coolest locations in the lower 40s, and we still have to hold ton to a possibility of a few sprinkles. quite a few clouds in place, fremont scattered clouds. by 12:00 50 degrees. by 3:00 an afternoon high right around 55 to 56. a bit of a break in the weather tomorrow. but at least in the rainfall for tomorrow. but there is another system developing out here in the pacific. coming out here, we have a track of a timing of what could trigger more clouds in the bay area.

i don't really want to but probably yeah. >> i don't agree with raising any more taxes. it's a multi billion dollars budget band aid that has many californians torn. they are caught in a tug of war over taxes, specifically the governor's plan to let the people decide whether or not to extend some money raising measures set to expire here in just months. ken pritchett live in sacramento with more. >> reporter: these taxes were supposed to be temporary, most of them expiring in june. but governor brown wants an extension with voter approval. what are these taxes and will voters go for it? it may be up to voters in a proposed june special election, yes on taxes to solve half of california's $26 billion budget problem. >> i'm not sure there's any option. i don't really want to but probably yeah. >> i don't agree with raising

any more taxes, we're struggling as it is. >> reporter: governor brown calls for an extension of taxes set in 2009 to balance that year's budget. brown wants a half percent increase in vehicle inspection to stay in place. a 1% sales tax set to expire in june would remain with voter approval. as would a 25% on work taxes. all would be extended for four years under brown's order. >> this would be the largest tax increase in the history of america by any state house. >> reporter: howard jarvis taxpayers association president john dupaul says voters have already rejury excusedded extending these very same taxes -- rejected extending these

house, the men took the car and drove off. the car is a black 2008 kia spectra with oregon license plates number aag0652. three people are under arrest tonight in connection with the killing of a richmond 16-year-old outside of his grandmother's home. police say afterward witnesses saw the suspect drive off in a white dodge avenger. police found the car and the suspect a few hours later. two juveniles and one adult. police still have no motive for the shooting. a lawsuit filed in arizona is attempting to force the fda to regulate imports of a drug used in executions. a shortage of the drug is forcing the u.s. to import it from britain for executions. the fda announced it will not lock the importation of -- will

not block the importation of the drug. l.a. county prosecutors announced today that they don't have enough evidence to charge a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a disabled woman. authorities have been looking for eight men who video taped sexual assaults of several disabled women. a 37-year-old man allegedly seen in the tapes turned himself over to police on saturday but prosecutors say they can't go ahead with the case until they determine whether the sex was consensual. another person is already serving time in prison. and we'll tell you what the founder of wikileaks fears being sent to the united states. new tests today for silent night, that wounded sea lion. what veterinaries hope to learn that could help other injured mammals.

a public memorial is now planned for january 22nd. a new jersey meat company recalled thousandsover thousands of pounds of ground beef that may have spoiled. some of it made it here to california. u.s. food and safety inspectors found that some of the beef smelled bad and was discolored. no one ate the meat and there are no reports of anyone falling ill. and hasange claims that if he is returned to the united

another bird death mystery, this time in the bay area. following deaths of thousands of wild birds and arkansas, louisiana and kentucky, more than 100 birds found dead on the road near geyserville. the news made it on the new york times and newspapers all across the globe. john fowler now near geyserville with this story. >> reporter: on this stretch of highway 101 more than 100 dead birds. and this bird die off threw people from all over the bay -- drew people from all over the bay area today. >> i think there are too many birds falling from the sky around the world. and i have yet to really hear a

then. >> julie, thank you. children who consume high levels of sugar have the significantly greater risk of heart disease as adults. the children's ldl or bad cholesterol was 9% higher than children who took in less sugar. their triglicerite levels were three times normal. german researchers have new everyday on the effect of secondhand smoke on children. children between the ages of five and six who come from homes where one or more parent smoked were 21% more likely to have high blood pressure than children who come from nonsmoking homes. doctors say that's especially worrying because children with high blood pressure are likely to maintain that condition as adults. all right on to our weather now, a little bit of rain today. we're going to see if we're going to get more rain this evening. mark tamayo filling in for bill. i see a lot of green there on
