the san mateo bridge looks good heading to the high-rise. no major problems there. morning commute looks good on the bay bridge coming into san francisco. now back to the desk. our time now 6:00. president obama revealed some remarkable news last night about a wounded congresswoman gabrielle giffords during a memorial service for the tucson shooting victims. >> gabbi opened her eyes for the first time. [ cheering and applause ] >> you can see why very emotional first lady michelle obama sitting next to gabrielle giffords' husband during last night's memorial. and nancy pelosi also there when congresswoman giffords' opened her eyes. they describe the moment as a miracle. president obama also recognized all of those who stopped the gunman and treated the injured. >> heroisms here. in the hearts of so many of our

fellow citizens. all around us just waiting to be summoned as it was on saturday morning. [ cheering and applause ] >> right there intern daniel hernandez jr. received a standing ovation. he rushed to help congresswoman giffords and the doctors are saying what he did helped save her life. six people were killed and a dozen others were wounded in that rampage on saturday. now, a funeral will be held today for little christina taylor green, the youngest victim killed in the tucson massacre. a united states flag recovered from the world trade center after 9/11 will be on display at her service. christina was born the anniversary of the day the towers fell. president obama praised the little girl at last night's memorial he said he wants our democracy to be adagios as christina imagined it. a hayward man in the hospital with a life threatening gunshot wound this morning. police say he was shot in the head by his 15-year-old son.

the shooting reported from a home on gating road yesterday afternoon. when police arrived the boy had run away. police found him at a nearby park. neighbors say the boy's mother and her estranged husband, the boy's father, were arguing when the shot was fired. four men facing murder charges in the drive by shooting death of a promising bay area musician. a break in the case just days ago. the suspects will be in court this morning. they are accused of killing the 24-year-old tucker a year ago. this past weekend one was arrested for a stabbing near an elementary school and police say he fired shots as he drove an interstate 80 near crockett. it's believed that tucker was an innocent victim killed by mistake. >> drove from sonoma county to

contra costa county for the purpose of killing a rival gang member. the victim, tucker, was not the intended target. this is truly a horrific and tragic case of mistaken identity. in addition to murder charges, the four suspects also face enhanced charges for a gang-related crime. now tucker was a base guitar player who toured the world with lauren hill and other famous musicians. time now 6:03. there's been a swarm of earthquakes recently just south of the bay area and scientists want to know why. in the last two days there have been more than two dozen quakes. last night two moderate quakes rattled monterey county. they hit just minutes apart around 8:00 p.m. measuring 3.7 and 3.9. those two quakes came less than a day after a 4.5 quake hit an area several miles north of prune deal. seismologists have been keeping a close eye on this very same area for more than a hundred

years. >> the 1906 earthquake which we might consider the big one for northern california ended right down here. >> now we checked the usgs website a short time ago. there have been 27 quakes in this region in the past two days. however, scientists are emphasizing this swarm of quakes doesn't necessarily mean a big one is coming. this morning spring training tickets go on sale for the world champion san francisco giants. the tickets are for the giants 17 cactus league games. they will be played at arizona's scottsdale stadium from february 25th toman 26th. the tickets go on sale at 10:00 a.m. at giants dugout stores and box office at at&t park. they're also available on the giants website. now ticket prices are based on demand depending on who the giants are playing just like the regular season. time now 6:05. a very disturbing discovery prompted an important warning this morning on the campus of uc santa cruz. ktvu's kraig debro joining us

live. he's in santa cruz with details. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. uc santa cruz officials let us know through crime alert and local papers here that there was a threatening of violent graffiti message written on one of the walls of one of the bathroom's here on campus. we made up a map to tell you exactly where this is. it happened at a building on college and social services 2 building on the north side of campus. the message was discovered in early december. but according to to uc santa cruz officials, they didn't release the information until just recently on january 11th. the reason for that was they said they didn't want people to panic too soon or unnecessarily. what was written on this message wasn't too specific. campus officials didn't release it. but it did say there was going to be some violent incident happening on january 18th. we just took video of the building just a few moments

ago. i didn't even have time to send it in. we're going to play this out of the camera. this is the building on campus again college ten social services building number 2. according to to the message something was going to happen on january 18th. they didn't say what it was. they said they contacted the f.b.i. but the f.b.i. is not investigating what happened. it's just being left to local police here to investigate. uc santa cruz officials are trying to find out who wrote the message trying to maybe get to the person before the 18th so that they can prevent whatever was threatened. they did say there were some things in the message that seemed threatening and all said there were some things in the message that didn'seem all that threatening. they're not exactly sure what they have here. but they wanted to get it out to the public in a manner of time that they could prepare people just in case. but, again, they didn't want to release it back when they discovered the message saying they didn't want to panic people. but, of course, i've already got calls in to police here. i'm going to make those calls again. i'm going to try to get hold of the vice chancellor who put out

the campus wide alert to see if we can get further comment from them as well students on campus. live in santa cruz, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:07. this morning bay area transit officials will debate a controversial plan. one that would make the golden gate bridge the first bridge in the country to eliminate human toll takers. ktvu's jade hernandez joining us now with the details on what they're talking about. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. tolltakers are calling this move a mistake. and it's a way to actually cut the multimillion dollar deficit that the golden gate bridge has. it had mean 32 toll takers here at the bridge would lose their jobs. that's where the money saving measure would be put into place. golden gate bridge officials face a shortfall over the next five years caused by several things, the recession, state funding cuts and $75 million they pledge for the more than $1 billion doyle drive project. what would this latest move mean for computers?

67% of bridge users already use fast track, they would be uneffected and they would continue to pay $5 to cross the golden gate bridge. since all tolls will be taken electronically, drivers would be sent a $6 bill. cars without license plates would be fined. and joining us this morning is mary curry with the golden gate bridge. thank you so much for joining us this morning. there is a special presentation today at the administration building. talk about the presentation, what will happen today and that final vote at the end of the month. >> sure. since last april we've been looking at the option of all electronic tolling talking to other agencies around the world that use this and evaluating all electronic tolling for use here at the golden gate bridge. the presentation here today will show that it works. the only way it will work is if we have the elimination of the manual collection. >> reporter: you're looking at a possible vote today. but that may not happen. >> that's right. today the finance committee's first time they're hearing this information. they may not want to vote on it today and move it forward to the full board on january 28th.

they could hold it in committee for further discussion. hard to say what's going to happen. very difficult decision ahead of them. >> absolutely. giving us the latest details about whether or not 32 toll takers right here at the golden gate bridge will be able to keep their jobs. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. right now 6:09. go to sal and check on the rest of the commute besides the bridges. how does everything look? things are doing pretty well if you are driving this morning on any of the bay area bridges or the highways. right now traffic approaching the bay bridge looks pretty good coming up to the toll plaza with no major problems on the bridge itself. also this morning we're looking at the san mateo bridge westbound 92 traffic looks pretty good getting out to the high-rise. and highway 101 traffic is at the speed limit. so is highway 280 when you get to the peninsula. this is a live look at 280 in downtown san jose. it is getting more crowded by the minute, but so far still plenty of room for you. 6:10. let's go to steve. all right.

cloudy skies. sal, thank you, sir. we have a weak system going by. but it will give us some rain today. not a big deal. but it's there. and the last system came by left a couple one-hundredths and maybe more farther north you go. some rain is beginning to try to develop especially towards the north bay. right there i imagine that's rather weak and not hitting the ground. i'm sure there's some light rain in lake county. temperatures big difference here. concord, livermore 39. 49 san francisco, santa rosa, napa 44 san jose and thick fog down there. 50s down to southern california. 35 tahoe. 34 reno. system sliding by is just that. it's sliding by with light rain. so cloudy, cooler today. rain mainly to the north. one more system will brush us on friday. but that's also tracking north as high pressure begins to build in and it looks like it wants to stick and stay for a while. but we have to deal with this system. so farther north you'll encounter higher probability of rain farther south more clouds and cooler conditions.

welcome back. time now 6:14. there's vice president joe biden now in iraq today. this is the third in a series of unannounced secret stops for the vice president. it also included afghanistan and pakistan. now the vice president is meeting with iraqi officials. in his meetings with iraq's president vice president biden said the single most important thing that could happen for the u.s. would be for iraq to become a prosperous democracy. in the week of the shooting tragedy in tucson and political mud slinging that has followed, some members of congress are calling for unity.

that was the theme of president obama's address at the memorial service yesterday evening. ktvu's allison burns is in our washington d.c. newsroom with more on that. allison. >> reporter: good morning to you, pam. president obama has no public events today but historing words from last night are being closely scrutinized this morning. president obama used his address to the nation at a memorial service in tucson to eulogize the victims. praise the heros. and call for more civil public discourse. as the crowd cheered him on, president obama said americans cannot use the tragedy as one more occasion to turn on each other. >> rather than pointing fingers or assigning blame, let's use this occasion to expand our moral imaginations, to listen to each other more carefully. >> reporter: now those calls for unity are continuing here at the capitol this morning. a democratic lawmaker is circulating a letter calling

for democrats and republicans to sit together during the president's state of the union address in a few weeks. usually they sit on opposite sides of the chamber. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. well, a man's been arrested in southern california accused of making threatening and obscene phone calls to a member of congress. court documents say the 32-year- old from palm springs threatened to kill congressman jim mcdermott of washington state as well as his friends and family because the congressman opposes extending tax cuts for the wealthy. he admitted making the calls but said he never intended to hurt anyone. he could face up to ten years in prison if he's convicted. a bay area artist has created these posters meant to criticize what he calls the use of fear as a political tool. the posters are showing up around san francisco. they were created by eddie cola. they show a picture of sarah palin along with the words and

i'm quoting enrage them with fear until they feel justified in their violence. sarah palin has defended herself against critics who say her political rhetoric may have inspired the shootings in tucson. do not believe former governor schwarzenegger was sincere in his apology to them. in a letter he apologized for not notifying them he was going to reduce the prison sentence. he's the son of former speaker. the other was sentenced to 16 years in prison for his role in the 2008 killing of 22-year-old santos. on his last day in office, schwarzenegger reduced the sentence to seven years. his father told the southern california radio station that in a letter schwarzenegger "tried to give some excuses for his actions." fred also says he believes the action was 100% politics. time now 6:18. a new bill in the state

assembly would end a legal loophole one that allows some state employees to get away with not paying tolls and not paying red light tickets. the 33 year old law was originally intended to keep the home addresses of judges and police officers confidential. however, some allege they are abusing the system and not paying the fines simply because they never get a ticket in the mail. well, this new law proposed would require anyone who applies for a confidentiality to provide the dmv with a current employment address. the commute usually getting a bit busier at this time. sal is watching everything. how does it look, sal? things are doing okay. as a matter of fact, we're doing for the most part we're doing okay. let's go out and take a look at some of these live pictures. but things are getting a bit more crowded as you can see here on the morning commute coming out towards the macarthur maze and bay bridge. watch for traffic to be

building a little at the toll plaza here. on the peninsula we're doing pretty well. there's word of an accident near el camino. looks like it's a minor injury accident. we'll get more details in just a moment. now 6:19. let's go to steve. sal, thank you. little change today. we had some warm temperatures especially towards the south bay yesterday. mid-60s. we have cloudy skies right now. rain is kind of flirting with the north bay. it's not a very strong system. but it's there. and see our system giving us a lot of clouds. not too much in the way of rain but there has been some. 40s to 30s concord livermore 39. upper 40s including san francisco i've seen a few readings at 50 degrees. that system is dragging across us it's very weak. give us a lot of clouds, light rain, cooler. rain wants to hang out in the north bay than anywhere else. 63 morgan hill. maybe to gill roy. cooler especially towards the north where that system is more

pronounced. partly cloudy on friday as another system drags by to the north. after that looks like high and dry with high pressure giving either fog or sunny and warm weather. pam and dave. sales dipped at the inbound of last year and many analysts blame the i pad. fourth quarter shipment grew just 2.7% globally. analysis say the tablet and lower cost pc alternatives are responsible for the drop. hp products are still the top seller followed by dell and acer. received the government's biggest financial bailout expects to be a big step closer to paying back the taxpayers. aig will convert the preferred stock the treasurety department holds to common stock at the end of the week. that will give the treasury department 92% ownership of aig. that stock can be sold to pay off the bailout. time now 6:21. no phone service for hundreds of residents in one east bay city after an attack by vandals. this is a story you'll only see

right now things are getting more crowded at the bay bridge toll plaza. certainly nothing you can't handle. but by the minute things are getting more crowded. we'll keep you updated and have another update straight ahead. thank you, sal. the storm that hit the northeast is still causing problems for people trying to get around connecticut. while most major streets are cleared now the snow is piled high on many neighborhood streets and many schools in new england will be closed today. bad weather is blamed for power outages across the region and flight delays across the country. crews are working to restore electricity after heavy snow brought down power lines. boston's logan airport will have some service but there are still thousands of planes that are not where they should be because of the storms. the wintry weather isn't confined to the northeast. here's some photos of the snowy peak on hawaii's big island. there's about half a foot at the sum there. the national weather service says right now there is snow in 49 of the 50 states.

florida is the only exception. time now 6:25. to a story you'll see only right here on channel 2. at&t is offering a $10,000 reward for information on whoever is deliberately cutting its phone lines. at&t says the lines have been cut at dozens of junction boxes around walnut creek over the past couple months. whoever's doing this is targeting the system. they've struck late at night cutting phone service to hundreds of customers. >> we're not going to speculate about who might be doing it. we do know there's a pattern and it's a pattern of someone who appears to know what they're doing. [ audio problems ] >> from reaching police or fire department in an emergency. the company says technicians will usually not work at night. they'll always wear uniform with an id badge and they'll drive a marked vehicle. if you do see someone in your neighborhood who doesn't meet those standards, contact the

why a teenager shot his father. police say the man was shot in the head, his injuries are life threatening. ktvu's paul chambers is in hayward right now with details on what happened. good morning, paul. >> reporter: good morning, dave. i recently got off the phone with police saying the update we have for you now is the man is alive. the 36-year-old man was allegedly shot in the head by his 15-year-old son. now take a look at video here. police say around 4:00 yesterday afternoon they responded to a call of a shooting in a 27000 block of gating road. once officers arrived on scene they found a man suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head. published reports state the 15- year-old's mother and estranged father had some sort of altercation before the shooting. it's believed the 15-year-old's grandparents lived with his grandparents and mother and sister. a neighbor was told that the mother asked the father to leave and then the grandfather stepped in and was pushed to the ground. that's when the young man allegedly shot his father and ran from the scene. minutes later police caught up with the young man who matched

the suspect's description at a nearby park. police are also able to recover the gun they believe was used in the shooting. they're not sure if this was on purpose or an accidental shooting. but we do know once again hayward police just released information that the man is still alive at this hour. live in hayward, paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. a san jose man suspected of stabbing his wife is recovering at a south bay hospital this morning. now investigators say the 41- year-old man cut his own throat in a suicide attempt. police had been searching for him for several days, but yesterday they found the seriously injured man hiding under a pile of clothes inside the closet of his own home. he is expected to survive and eventually face attempted murder charges in a weekend stabbing attack on his wife. this morning a san francisco man is enjoying his first full day of freedom in 18 years. yesterday the 40-year-old walked out of the san francisco county jail to the cheers of family and friends. his release came after a judge ruled that he had been wrongly

convicted of a 1989 double homicide in the city's bay view district. it was newly appointed d.a.'s call to formally drop the charges in the case. time now 6:32. more disturbing details now have come out about the accused gunman in the tucson shootings from the community college he attended. the campus police released 51 pages outlining strange incidents and outbursts by jared loughner. in one incident campus police say loughner launched into a tirade in class and talked about killing people. in a police report the dean of the school described him as creepy with a dark personality and said he would watch him closely. peninsula lawmaker will make an urgent call for change when he appears before the state public utilities commission in san francisco this morning. democratic assemblyman jerry hill represents san bruno. he says last september's pipeline disaster has shaken

the public's trust in the puc. hill is especially concerned that the commission has not leveed a single fine against pg&e for pipeline safety violation in more than ten years. and he believes it may be time to replace some puc members. now the sheriff of marin county says he will not enforce the county's ban on pg&e's smart meters. sheriff bob doyle says county supervisors had no authority to impose that moratorium last week. and he also feels the smart meter ban would be impossible to enforce. many people are worried about the radiation coming from the smart meters. but a major study released yesterday found that there's no hashed scientific proof that the radiation poses a public health threat. san francisco's new mayor is moving quick to try to find a new police chief. mayor ed lee told us he's already met with members of the police commission and told them to select up to three candidates for police chief as soon as possible for his consideration. >> i promised as i was appointed here that that would

be one of my top priorities and the process is started. >> now former police chief was selected after a seven month long nationwide search. but just four days ago he resigned to take the job as san francisco's district attorney. this time around the mayor and the police commissioner say they'll move faster. police union says a new chief could be in place within two months. disturbing graffiti discovered in a men's bathroom has prompted an important warning on the uc santa cruz campus. ktvu's kraig debro joins us now from santa cruz with the story. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. i just spoke with a high ranking official here at uc santa cruz. of course what happened in tucson over the weekend is on the minds of a lot of people. i asked the high ranking official if the release of information about what happened here had anything to do with that, they said they did discuss it but the timing was related to something else. i want to show you where this happened on campus. it happened on college campus of college ten and the social

services building 2. it was in the men's bathroom they found this message in early december. the vice chancellor didn't tell me specifically what the message said but it had a reference to january 18th that something was going to happen on january 18th that was violent. now when i talked to the vice chancellor i said why didn't you release the information back in december? she said winter break was coming up but she also said they were afraid that if they released the information then they wouldn't be able to quietly find out who this person was. that was the main goal. as it got closer to the 18 they felt it was necessary to release the information now. but, again, asked her about tucson and here's what she said. >> we discussed that at length. to go on what we have taking other things into account. >> reporter: so far she says since they posted this alert

campus wide crime alert on the west side they've had a couple people come forward to try to give them information. they have not yet discovered who wrote this on the bathroom wall. the f.b.i. had been called to inform them about this but they are not now investigating what happened. it's being handled locally for now. the alert was for january 18th. the information released now according to to allison because they were getting nowhere trying to find the person quietly and they wanted to get the information out there so that maybe people on campus could help them find whomever this was. going forward mornings on 2 i'm going to be trying to continue my conversations with people here on campus to see how tucson is effecting their thoughts about this threat. reporting live at santa cruz, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. okay. time now 6:37. let's go to sal see how the traffic is flowing at this hour. sal. traffic is doing well. pardon me. i was speaking with some of the people here about spring training. we're going to tell you all about that in just a minute.

well, good morning to you. welcome back. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we're following right now at 6:43. four men will be in court this morning facing murder charges in the drive by shooting death of young tucker. tucker was killed last january while driving on interstate 80 near crockett. police say he was not the intended target of the gang members who killed him. a hayward man is fighting for his life this morning after being shot in the head by his 15-year-old son. neighbors say the young man's mother and his father were arguing when that shooting

occurred. the teenager fled the scene but was found with a gun in a nearby park. seismologists say the recent swarm of quakes south of the bay area is not a sign the big one is coming. there have been more than two dozen quakes in the monterey county area in the past two days. well, the youngest victim of the tucson shooting will be laid to rest today. her funeral follows an emotional memorial where president obama shared some remarkable news about congresswoman gabrielle giffords. sandra endo joins us now from washington with more on that part of the story. good morning, sandra. >> reporter: good morning. certainly that was one of the high points in yesterday's speech. president obama's now back in washington, but he did make a brief but very important trip to tucson to talk at that memorial and he had a very poignant message for the country. words of healing and unity. president barack obama called

on the nation to come together in the aftermath of the deadly shooting in tucson. >> the forces that divide us are not as strong as those that unite us. [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: today another memorial. this one for the youngest victim, 9-year-old christina taylor green. at first her funeral was going to be met with protest by the kansas based westboro baptist church. but after a ground swell of support for green and the arizona legislature passing an emergency bill to prohibit protesting inside of 300 feet of a funeral, the church backed down. green's parents say strength will help them overcome this difficult time. >> we will you know get through this. >> reporter: the president and first lady also visited the hospital where congresswoman gabrielle giffords is recovering. shortly after the visit, giffords opened her eyes for the first time. senator and congresswoman were in the hospital room when it happened. >> all of a sudden the slits of

her eyes started to open. you could see the determination that she was struggling to get them open. then mark started encouraging her. finally when mark said honey if you can see me give me the thumb's up. all of a sudden her arm flew up in the air. she started touching him. it was amazing. >> reporter: now as far as the investigation goes authorities are still trying to piece together what suspect jared loughner was doing that day. live in washington, dave and tori, back to you. well, back here in the bay area oakland mayor jean quan will call for tougher gun control laws at next week's conference of mayors in washington d.c. >> what happened in arizona and what's been happening in oakland is we're seeing the reappearance of automatic weapons being used in shootings. so obviously an automatic weapon can kill many more people. >> the federal assault weapons ban offered by senator diane

feinstein expired in 2004. it outlawed guns that hold more than ten rounds. investigators believe the gun used in the tucson shooting was equipped with a magazine that holds up to 31 bullets. time now 6:46. the mayor attended the vigil to remember the tucson shooting victims. more than 100 people gathered in front of oakland city hall last night. east bay congresswoman barbara lee also there. she condemned the shooting of her colleague and other victims and said violence will not derail democracy. >> and of course we have to be practical and we have to ensure that security protocols are in place. but in no way should this deter any of us from our work. >> now tonight congressman mike will pay tribute to congresswoman giffords and the other tucson shooting victims at a vigil in san jose. that tribute begins at 7:00 p.m. at the first unitarian search on north third street. south bay aflcio labor council is organizing this event along

with the santa clara county democratic party. it is open to the public. time now 6:47. let's go back over to sal. sal, what are you watching? all right. we are looking at the south bay commute with news chopper 2. this is highway 101 in the gill roy morgan hill area. northbound 101 traffic moving along rielty live welcoming up to the downtown san jose area. so far it's crowded but no major problems. also this morning's commute is okay on the grade. we have a little bit of slow traffic though heading south as i look at the chp page here. southbound 680 traffic is moving along okay. southbound 880 at 23rd we have an accident blocking a couple of lanes on southbound 880. so we're going to follow that for you. and moving along that crash on -- i'm sorry the traffic at the bay bridge that traffic is still light. 6:48. let's go to steve. sal, thank you. a lot of clouds and decent rain. but it's to the north we have mostly cloudy skies towards san

jose. live storm tracker 2 shows there is some rain but the heaviest rain is north of fort brag. very light amounts in the county. some of that green is turning to white up into lake county. there could be some snow up towards the geysers again. 43 fairfield. 40s for many or right at 40 livermore, concord's 44 degrees. 30s in the mountains. 40s or 30s in the valley. 50s down to southern california, but in the desert 30s and 40s. again, this system pointing moist of its energy north of us. rain mainly north. what does fall will be light. clouds, cooler today. one more system moves in but it continues to track towards the pacific northwest. clearing and cool. but fog will be forming. that's going to play into our weekend forecast and beyond. there's a system going in now the one to the left of your screen. but today clouds, 39 to 49. cloudy, rain, mostly cloudy. again, that is very light rain in the morning hours. this system will finally move through later this afternoon. keep some light rain in the forecast. and then by this evening 52 to

62. we had very warm conditions in the santa clara valley yesterday. little cooler today though. 50s for many low to mid. san francisco 56. we'll go 52 fairfield though. pleasanton 56. half-moon bay 55. san jose 61. santa cruz is 60. and redwood city 58. partly cloudy on friday and then here comes high pressure and it may be here for a while which means fog for the north bay, east bay, fog and mostly warmer for everyone else. the latest unemployment numbers are worst than analysts expected this morning. 445,000 people filed for first time unemployment benefits last week which is up 35,000 from the week before. analysts say though that may be because seasonal holiday workers were laid off and some people waited until after the holidays to file. all right. checking in on wall street. even though those numbers were disappointing, the stock market reacting fairly mildly. the dow jones down just about 19 points. nasdaq and s&p 500 also down

president, biden said the single most significant thing that could happen for the u.s. would be for iraq to become a prosperous democracy. and we'll have more on that later. time now 6:54. well, today the government is announcing some new proposed federal standards for school lunch. the new guidelines would establish the first calorie limits in school meals. it would reduce the amount of sodium. ban most transfats. require more fruit and vegetable servings. require that milk be low fat or nonfat. and increasing the amount of whole grains required. these guidelines are designed to reduce childhood obesity. a new city college of san francisco campus in the city's north beach neighborhood is making some progress. the campus is being built in two buildings near washington, considerny, jackson and columbus. the school right now uses a facility on filbert street that they're renting from the san francisco unified school district. the campus was supposed to be completed in january 2012, but

because of a variety of complications, that date has been pushed back to may 2012. we remember the recent tree protests at uc berkeley. now a hollywood star is showing her support for a similar demonstration in los angeles county. last night daryl han that attended a candle light vigil. the demonstrators say they are determined to stop developers from cutting down some century old trees. but county demolition crews say the tree sitters will not stop them from finishing their job. all right. time now 6:56. sal, there's a crash in oakland. what happened? that's right. it's 880 southbound reported at 23rd. one of our news crews happens to be stuck in the back up. one of our news crews told us northbound is getting into the act with slow traffic near 23rd. so if you're driving on the freeway heading south or north in this area of 23rd there is a crash. a couple trucks got into it and left lane blocked southbound but northbound traffic also slow. let's move along news chopper 2
