are expecting is just fine. live in belmont, robert handa. >> if you're interesting in watching the entire interview, you can go to our website ktvu.com and find the clicks in the video player on our home page. >> in just the last hour, the sonoma county sheriff's office has released the surveillance photo of an armed robbery suspect. investigators say this man came into the bank of the west around noon. when officers arrived he was gone with an undisclosed amount of cash. unnamed authorities tell the local newspaper that the customers and employees were found locked in the bank vault. no one was hurt. police say they terrorized family after family. armed gunmen taking over homes and stealing what they could. tonight oakland police say they have arrested the people responsible but they still have questions about why the three suspects targeted certain

people in oakland. christien kafton has been following the story. >> reporter: late this afternoon, i got this 132 count charges of two suspects that terrorized families. the suspects targeted neighborhoods like this one at 21st avenue and 25th street. neighborhoods with large immigrant communities.. investigators say between march and november of last year robbers terrorized the city with a string of home invasions. demanding to come in, stealing electronics, jewelry and money all at gunpoint. >> victims from two years of age to 60 years of age. >> reporter: prosecutors have

now charged morio simmons bayless and malerough. >> on the interviews we never got the answers to that. >> reporter: the district attorney says the three suspects collectively face more than 300 years prison time. but the case does not meet the standards to prosecute them with hate crimes. >> the hate crime statute has some components to it that require a certain element of proof. >> reporter: our investigator told me today that breaking down the language barriers between the victims and police helped them to connect all 24 cases. investigators are still looking to see if this trio may be responsible for even manufacture unsolved home invasions. christien kafton, ktvu news.

the utility commission's meeting turned into a blame game over pipeline safety in the deadly san bruno explosion. >> this commission has failed the people of california and especially the residents of my district. >> thank you mr. hill. commissioner hill says that pg & e as well as the upc are to blame. >> rerealize the fault at upc. we realize that there's fault all the way around the circuit. >> reporter: hill called on all sides to listen to each other. the upc has appointed a four member panel to independently investigate the san bruno explosion. friends and family gathered for the funeral of 9-year-old christina taylor green. the flag is the largest one

recovered from the wreckage of september 11th. christina was actually born on september 11th. christina's family spoke about the outpouring of support. >> we have to be strong, our country is being strong for us, so we will you know get through this. >> reporter: the third grader had an interest in politics and had recently been elected to the state student council at her elementary school. doctors say they may have congresswoman giffords sit on a chair tomorrow. she has now not only opened her eyes she's also moving both legs and both arms and responding to friends and family. doctors say the next step is to remove her breathing tube which has remained in place as a precaution. california lawmakers today started digging deeper into governor jerry brown's new budget plan.

the first meetings were held in the house and assembly. there's somebody in there for everyone to dislike. brown's plan balances the budgets with a mix of spending cuts, tax extensions and tax changes. the governor says he wants to reach a budget agreement in 60 days. now to oakland where a rally just took place outside a chase bank athe rock ridge shopping center. the theme of that rally is bail out schools, not banks. restore services, stop foreclosures. organizers say foreclosures are hitting the city's low income communities. two parents organized this evening's rallies. the future is unknown

tonight for the olioto fish and crab company. the fish company says it can't continue operating because of the near by pollution. olioto has sued both the pier and exxonmobil for the closure. we should make clear here that olioto's restaurant at fisherman's ward has different owners. and olioto's restaurant is not closing. the foreclosure reality is about to go from bad to worse. 1.3million americans will lose their homes this year. that would top last year's total of 4 million foe closures. 5million americans are currently at least two months behind on their mortgage.

protesters gathered outside the county courthouse in oakland today where forclosed homes are auctioned off to find relief for struggling homeowners. the activists say they want banks to modify home loans for struggling homeowners. and that middle school, they learned a very valuable lesson today. those seven kids ate rat poison, and tonight all of those kids are okay but many of them are wondering how this could have happened at their school. john sasaki is live at king middle school in san francisco now with our report. >> reporter: it's not hard to imagine a young mind confusing this rat poison with candy or cookies if it's cut into small pieces. and officials say that's exactly what happened here at king middle school. one after another seven students were taken to area hospitals after ingesting the green rat poison. fire officials say the kids thought it might be candy or

cookies. >> it's in a block form. it's not in a crystallized form. so it's in a block form. i didn't think it looked like candy. >> reporter: but the kids told firefighters what it tasted like. >> somebody said it tasted like cookies. >> cookies? how do you explain that? >> probably that rats like people food. >> reporter: it happened in a classroom where a substitute was teaching. officials aren't sure if someone brought the rat poison to schools or left by someone in the class. the poison manufacturers told them it is not toxic to humans in small amounts and that none of the kids showed any effects.

>> reporter: the two students taken to the hospital were in both in good condition and would not be admitted. the toll takers at the golden gate bridge might be a thing of the past. looking live now here at the bridge, that would mean all tolls would be collected electronically. the bridge district is trying to reduce it's $8 million deficit. one woman told us while the idea could be good it could cause problems for some. >> i just think there's so many foreigners who cross the bridge too. i don't know how complicated it was going to be for them to understand the system and have nobody there to help them. >> reporter: the finance committee decided to continue discussing the proposal on

their next meeting. the rules of how low airplanes can fly are about to change. what the federal government is trying to protect. also a hate crime against an alamo teacher has that teacher making a plea for changes in the school district. what she wants done. a new plan is about to unleash great debate in three bay area county, we'll have a live report. and we had light showers today. there's still a bit out there. but now we're going to be talking about the fog. look out for it tomorrow morning, i'll show you where it'll be the worse.

graffiti said people were going to be killed. the graffiti was found last month. but this week the university released a statement to students. so far classes have not been cancelled. the sheriff's department says it's investigating a hate crime. the teacher said she found -- the vandal or vandals wrote an expletive, mentioned a sexual act and named the student. it will come out tomorrow, a new draft plan that would

change rules for requiring dog owners to have their dogs on a leash in public parks in three bay area counties. ktvu's jim vargas got a sneak peak at the new changes. he's at christie field today what he learned. >> you're bound to see signs like these to the sensitive habitat. many are not going to cross the road but many unleashed dogs do. logs like luigi crosses into the environment area, and yes they chase birds. tomorrow, the national parks service will release it's draft plan to restrict unleashed bans to only parts like christie fields. all dogs without a leash will be banned to protect not only the environment but people who

wktvu.com. that's beginning tomorrow and look to a link of the national parks service. live in san francisco, jim vargas. a federal law that dictates how long airplanes can fly over restricted sites is about to be changed. the national oceanic service is looking at the rule. the rule protects wildlife such as these common murr. the change would stamp required where pilots must stay above 1,000 feet. today's drizzly weather kept things pretty wet around the bay area. this is what it looked like in downtown oakland this morning. there's plenty of umbrellas outside as people took a little shelter from the light rain. staying on the subject of the rain. let's see what we can expect for tomorrow and the rest of the week. now over to our chief meteorologist bill martin.

what do you think we'll expect tonight. >> in points like south rays they received .10. for the rest of us trace amounts. very little to speak of it was enough though to slow things down. tonight it'll be enough to create an enviral that fog will thrive in. we're going to have a pretty good dose of valley fog tonight. here's the system as it passed through this afternoon. there was rain around redding and climate falls and up across the northeast portion of the state. tonight the story is, the cool air, the moist air in place there's no win. the fog is going to have a great chance of forming as this system moves over the area. look for valley fog from redding south to stockton, south of baker's field bakersfield and out to the coast. i think it'll be foggy in places it's not usually. i think you're going to see fog

in places like fremont when you wake up. temperatures will be on the warm side upper 40s and 50s. the dewpoint, that's the temperature if the thermometer gets to that temperature, fog will form. the dewpoint about 50 degrees. you think the temperature in most bay area locations is going to get to 50 degrees, as soon as it does many wind sheltered valley, fog forms. clears out pretty rapidly tomorrow by lunchtime. temperatures in the mid- and low 60s in some warm spots, kind of neat. we haven't seen that in a long time. as you head into the santa clara valley, low 60s. out toward santa cruz. mid-60s. here's the deal, as you get into saturday you could reach temperatures in the upper 60s. it has been cold, it has been wet. this could be a heck of a nice saturday. a few clouds get in here on

sundays. there's nothing staring us down. no big storms. we're dry for a while. it'll be nice to see something tee up. for this weekend, fog is the headline. >> warm for a change for the weekends. >> 67, 70 degrees. >> sound nice, thank you bill. oakland's new mayor quan has asked for a call for help asking residents to donate their time for improvement. they will fix broken signs, cleaning up graffiti and removing abandoned cars. this weekend's event will formally launch the mayor's campaign to boost volunteerism. before taking office, mayor quan asked people to volunteer at least an hour a week. officials at stanford say 34,200 students applied to attend as freshmen in the fall. that's up 7% from last year where 32,000 applications were received and only a fraction of

that number will end up being accepted. the students will be notified by the end of march if they are one of those lucky ones being accepted through the regular or early admissions process. the federal government stepped up it's war on childhood obesity today by targeting school lunches. the agriculture department released new guidelines today that include decreasing the amount of starchy vegetables, reducing the amount of sodium, serves low fat or fat free milk and increasing fruits and vegetables. >> they giver out burritos and small pizzas, everything that's not knew, nutritious. >> reporter: one omission, reducing sugar content. the upcoming america's cup in san francisco will go on long after the regata is over. and the labor department announced that jobless claims
