off sooner for most today. temperatures though still 50s in the fog prone areas and if you have the thick fog few low to mid-60s. here's sal. traffic is moving along okay on highway 24. more people today than yesterday because of yesterday's holiday. people are back and traffic is moving well here. also this morning on the bridge westbound traffic is busy. checking to see if there's a stall up there or something. you can see definitely a lot of clouding on that upper deck. 6:01. back to the desk. sal, thank you. san jose police are busy investigating an overnight drive-by shooting that left one man dead. ktvu's kraig debro joining us from the scene with more on who the police think is responsible. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. there's been some activity within the past hour. this happened at story road and hopkins behind me. there's a restaurant in the distance. the man's body found dead right in front of the restaurant. if you look here you can see the crime scene van is still here on the scene but investigators appear to be

bundling up their equipment. it could be gone in about 20 minutes from now. the shooting happened at the sunset garden plaza on story road around 11:00 last night. police say it was a drive-by shooting. witnesses gave only a vague description of the vehicle but on the scene told me that the vehicle did not have a license plate. witnesses have been returning to the scene only because they've been at police headquarters all night long giving their statement. and a couple of those witnesses actually live in this area. so they're returning here so they can go home and get to sleep. the 20-year-old victim died on the scene. police aren't releasing his name pending family notification. police say motive is gang- related but didn't say what makes them draw that conclusion except that story road and king area -- king's about a block from here, has a history of gang-related violence. coming up we're going to try to see if we can speak to those witnesses. might be a difficult task, but still like to speak to them to see what they found out or what they saw last night. live in san jose, kraig debro,

ktvu channel 2 news. even though classes resume today at uc santa cruz following the holiday break, many students plan to stay away fearing violence. it stems from graffiti scrolled on a bathroom wall warning of violence today january 18th. some classes have been canceled. tighter security is coming from the santa cruz police and sheriff deputies. time now 6:02. we're following overnight news from oakland right now. police are searching for the man they say shot a woman during an attempted kidnapping. ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live with the details. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, dave. you know martin luther king, jr. day is typically a day symbolically known for peaceful activism. but yesterday the streets of oakland were marred by violence. we had four shootings over just about a seven hour period. now, here's a look at where the most recent in a string of shootings happened last night off international boulevard. authorities say two people, one armed with a gun, tried to

kidnap a woman off the street just after 11:00. that woman was shot and taken to a local hospital where she is recovering. now police are still searching for the suspects but we have no description of them at this point. this is the fourth shooting to ripple through oakland on martin luther king, jr. day including one in east oakland around 4:00 last night that left one man dead. that incident also happened off international. three other people were injured. now within the next four hours there were two more shootings that left three people shot. police say it is too early to tell if any of these shootings are connected. if you have any information about any of these incidents you are urged to contact oakland police. live in oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. there's a $10,000 reward this morning for the return of ashes stored inside an urn that was stolen from a cemetery in lafayette. the ashes were of thomas gonzalez jr., the co-founders of the pleasanton based company commerce one. he died in 2001 of cancer.

relatives say the ashes were stolen on sunday from a private. ♪ [ music ] lyam. an employee recovering this morning after being injured on the job. it happened about 8:00 last night at the conoco plant. the contra costa fire officials say the employee was knocked unconscious by aplex city glass panel that was blown out when a high pressure steam line burst. the employee was taken to the hospital. we don't know his condition. the refinery has had no comment as yet. the focus on wall street this morning is on apple. it will be the first trading day since steve jobs revealed that he is taking another medical leave of absence and will be out of work indefinitely. that's raising new concerns about the health of the 55-year- old apple ceo. in recent years he has battled pancreatic cancer and undergone a liver transplant. we're watching apple stock closely this morning. right now it will open down about $17 a share or nearly 5%.

time now 6:05. oakland police chief is talking about his possible move to another big bay area city. the chief and oakland mayor quan both appeared yesterday at a martin luther king, jr. day celebration in oakland. you may not see them together much longer. on friday the chief notified mayor quan he is a finalist for the police chief's job in san jose. >> many times when you say i was a chief of police people recruit you. when i was in the city of long beach the city of oakland came to me and recruited me heavily. >> i haven't had a good working relationship with him. so of course i'd like to continue but i want to have a chief that's going to be committed for at least two or three years. >> now the chief has only been on the job as chief for a little more than a year in oakland. there have been reports he may have been unhappy with san francisco's new mayor. budget problems have forced many cities to reduce employee benefits. but tonight the berkeley city

council is set to add one. the city would pay for their sex change operations. under the plan the city hall would set aside $20,000 every year for so-called gender reassignment surgery. critics say leaders should focus on more traditional services such as road repair and traffic control. let's see what sal's seeing on the roads. people coming back to work going back to school. >> that's right. yesterday was a holiday. today there are certainly more people out on the road and we are looking at some of the fog moving through. this is a look at the incline section of the bay bridge. moving along okay. there's certainly more people. but yesterday it was really foggy on this bridge. today not so much any way not yet. this is a look at san francisco along northbound 101 approaching the 80 split. that traffic is moving along very nicely. and if you're driving in san jose, 280 northbound looks okay. northbound 101 at alp rock there is a crash. because of the fog on the right hand side of your screen, kind of looks like a big sunrising

out of san jose but that's actually some sort of light there. but it's kind of a cool effect. 6:07. let's go to steve. you sure about that, sal? >> that's what i think. >> well, some very warm temperatures in southern california also down around santa cruz to monterey. big sur. if you're anywhere near there if you're heading there expect warm conditions. for us you just saw areas where fog is up. dense fog advisory up but not as bad as yesterday morning. still some walls of that thick fog. system moving into the north. but for some it was a warm monday. pasadena yesterday was 89. santa barbara was 87. ucla checked in at 86 warm degrees. los angeles was 84. san diego 82. and big sur was 81 degrees. for us it's fog and chilly cool mornings and not bad days if the sun's out. near 70 high santa cruz and monterey. we have to deal with the dense fog advisory this morning. there are signs we'll see a decrease in some of that fog especially as we head towards

wednesday night into thursday. dense fog then sunny and warmer. wednesday though looks to be even like less fog. more of a north breeze which should take care of some of this fog. it's already beginning to show signs of it. but north at 3 napa. north-northeast concord right now it's just bringing back in the fog from the valley. 40s for everybody again. hayward down to 43. if you get in an area where it's clear temperature drops even colder livermore was 39 now 43. 20s for some. 48 sacramento. big difference there. redding with the clouds 54. we are seeing a little hint of a pattern change here in the form of that system moving into the north and behind that looks to me like i think we'll get a helping along of this fog getting out of here but that won't be until tomorrow. today we have dense fog then sunny. breezy, sunny on wednesday. sunny to mostly sunny thursday and friday. okay. sounds good. sarah palin is not backing down. her response to critics who say her campaign rhetoric may have helped motivate the gunman in

arizona. and the white house is releasing a new report this morning about what's at stake for millions of americans if house republicans succeed in repealing health reform. i'll have details coming up as the morning news continues.

now from our washington d.c. newsroom with the very latest. good morning, allison. >> reporter: good morning to you, pam. as congress gets back to worked to the first order of business for house republicans is trying to repeal what they call obama care. gop lawmakers say the health reform law signed by president obama is too expensive, too intrusive and too burdensome. but today the obama administration is fighting back by releasing a report that says up to half of americans have conditions that could make them at risk of being rejected by insurer's if the health law goes down. at the same time, some democrats are indicating a willingness to change parts of the law like requirements for small businesses. >> if we can move that conversation to what about the bill do you want to change, that is a legitimate debate that we should frankly have. the bill's not perfect and never has been. >> reporter: now even if this health reform repeal passes the house, the vote is tomorrow, it

is very unlikely to make it through the senate. but republicans say they are going to keep trying. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:13. well, the president of china arrives on a three day visit to washington d.c. this afternoon. chinese flags are on display this morning. you see them there. along side american flags. this is on pennsylvania avenue right in front of the white house. and it's there to welcome the president. tonight the president of china will have a private dinner with president obama ahead of the formal state dinner tomorrow night. the bay area's two new chinese- american mayors, quan of oakland and lee of san francisco have both been invite and had they will attend the white house state dinner. doctors in arizona say congresswoman gabrielle giffords could be released from the hospital in days or even weeks. surgery to relieve pressure on her eye socket was successful ten days after she was shot in the head.

giffords' husband, mark kelly, says she's been smiling at him. kelly also says he would be willing to meet the parents of the suspected gunman and does not blame them for the shootings. the father of the youngest victim of the tucson shootings says his daughter's donated corneas have saved the eyesight of two children. 9-year-old christina green was one of the six people killed during the shooting spree. her father says the donor network of arizona told him and his wife that his daughter's corneas were successfully transplanted. time now 6:15. former vice presidential candidate sarah palin continues to defend herself against criticism that her campaign rhetoric may have helped motivate the gunman in that arizona mass shooting. the controversial map now removed from sarah palin's political action committee website had the cross hairs of a gun over the congressional districts of 20 democratic candidates including that of congresswoman gabrielle giffords. >> that came up right away that it must be a cause of this

horrendous evil act of this shooter that perhaps he saw that map and that insighted him towards violence which of course is ridiculous. >> sarah palin says democrats have used these types of maps with cross hairs for years. she vows she'll continue speaking out because she believes the nation is heading in the wrong direction. all right. let's take a look at traffic. sal is starting on the grade. how does it look? >> looking pretty good, pam. we've also been watching 580 trying to get to it. 580 and 680 grade traffic looking okay heading down to the south bay with no major issues and the traffic is going to be okay. let's go out and see what we have here with -- there is the grade. traffic continues to look pretty good heading down past the mission boulevard exit. also this morning we're looking at the toll plaza. just as we predicted more people already there. they've switched the metering lights on. there's a little bit of a crowd especially in those fast track

lanes. and if you're driving on 101 northbound there's still an accident at allen rock turned out to be minor. traffic is moving well on 280. 6:16. let's go steve. sal, dense fog advisory take us to about 9:00. it's cold out there for some low 40s for areas that don't have the fog. once we get cranked up we will see some temperatures in the low to mid-60s. warmer towards santa cruz and monterey. valley fog though the valley fog like you know it's coming back in. and it makes some areas really tough to get past 5 will h or 55 degrees. that would be napa airport, fairfield, vacaville, discovery bay, reduced visibility but sunshine for many. palo alto down to 43. so is concord livermore. it's cold out there for some. san francisco 47. santa rosa napa mid-40s. two high clouds coming in redding's mostly cloudy and 55. there's a north wind also at redding. that's a sign i think we'll get

the fog out of here tomorrow. today we'll have to deal with some. chilly cold lows, slightly warmer for those in the sun. in the fog though 50s. warmer if you can get that fog to burn off. especially out towards as we said santa cruz and monterey down to big sur was 81 yesterday. decrease some of that fog on wednesday. warmer thursday and friday. thank you, steve. grams of cocaine smith clean will take a $3.4 billion charge against earnings this quarter because of one of its drugs. the british pharmaceutical giant will set aside money for litigation over avandia. last year regulators ordered it off the market and the u.s. food and drug administration has restricted the drug's use. u.s. investors won't be allowed to take part in goldman sacks private offering in facebook. only europe and asia will be allowed to participate. the company says that it could violate u.s. securities guidelines. that private offering is expected to raise $1.5 billion

for the palo alto based social networking site. time now 6:18. well rising in santa cruz county is threatening houses now. the reason the homeowners are not allowed to fix the problem. and the san francisco neighborhood people are using as an illegal dumping ground and how much it's costing taxpayers. good morning. very foggy. this would be the san mateo bridge. you can barely see it. so the fog is there in some areas. we'll tell you where straight ahead.

good morning. right now traffic is getting filled up here. it's backed up to about the middle of that parking lot. all of a sudden you're going to see more slow traffic coming in to san francisco. also crowded on the bridge. all right. sal, boy they're coming. time now 6:22. the fog is causing flight delays and cancellations this morning at some of the bay area airports. sfo officials tell us expect delays on arrivals and departures this morning. oakland airport says they're not expecting many delays because the fog just isn't as thick there as it was yesterday. in san jose they do have mild visibility. so they're not expecting many delays. but just make sure double check

with the airline before you head to the airport. well, residents in one santa cruz county neighborhood are worried that an overflowing creek, this one here, is threatening their homes. the homes are on a coastal bluff above rio dell mar beach. the santa cruz board say the homeowners are willing to pay to dig a trench and fix the problem, however the county says the situation doesn't warrant an emergency declaration and that's needed for that type of work to begin. and san francisco people who live in the bay view district say they're sick and tired of their neighborhood being treated like the city dump. the public works department says it's an ongoing problem. people and even businesses illegally dumping trash and construction debris on the streets of the bay view usually at night making it difficult to find out who's doing it. >> it's very annoying because we try to create a safe haven in the bay view district for our community. and people come by and they see this.

automatically they have a preconceived idea of what happens in this neighborhood. >> each year the department of public works says it receives 17,000 complaints from it and cost taxpayers $4 million for the clean up. time now 6:23. san francisco mayor red lee will be taking a walking tour along the embarcadero today as san francisco prepares to host the 34th america's cup. the mayor will start at pier 27. that's where a racing village for the 2013 event is set to be built. it's also home to several businesses that could be forced to move to make room for the america's cup. well, today the oakland raiders will hold a noontime press conference to officially introduce their new head coach. yesterday the team announced that raiders' offensive coordinator hue jackson has been promoted to the team's top coaching job. he's been considered the clear front runner ever since tom cable was allowed to go two

weeks ago. the raiders point totals more than double this season during hue jackson's first year as oakland's offensive coordinator. former 49ers head coach getting ready for his new job. he's joining the staff of the minnesota vikings as their new line backer's coach. and vikings quarterback brett favre is apparently ready to leave the nfl for good now. the 41-year-old star once again filed his retirement papers. he's done it twice before and then he came back. this year brett favre had his worst year as a pro. threw just eleven touchdowns, had 19 interceptions. he also had a public dispute with his head coach. he had a lot of injuries. and he was also accused of sexually harassing a former playboy model. well, we're happy to let you know about this. you can soon watch ktvu morning news even earlier. we are expanding ktvu morning news on monday january 24th the ktvu morning news will begin a

welcome back to the morning news. we are looking live on the traders at the new york stock exchange and over there at the nasdaq as well where they are getting ready to ring the opening bell. pretty busy day. going to be a very busy week as we get a lot of earnings reports coming in. i'll tell you this morning city bank reported a $1.3 billion profit. that number not as good as analysts were expecting. that always takes a little bit of a toll on the numbers. apple of course we've been watching very closely apple stocks now set to open down a little more than 5%. >> really? >> $17.5 a share. but really a lot of talk this morning that apple has a very deep bench now of executives ready to step in as steve jobs makes the announcement that he is going to go on medical leave

again indefinitely. we don't know how long. of course steve jobs pivotal in the company. so really been in question as to how apple can function without steve jobs at least for now. and there on the new york stock exchange big brothers, big sisters of new york city doing wonderful work that organization. all over the country. we have a great, great organization branch of that organization here in the bay area as well as they get ready to ring the opening bell. there it is live in new york. and we get to those numbers in just a minute. all right. we're there for you. we bring it to you live. we say good morning to you. thank you for joining us here on the ktvu morning news. i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. time now is 6:30. san jose police are searching for suspects in an overnight drive by shooting that killed one man. ktvu's kraig debro joins us now from the scene with more on who police think may be responsible. kraig. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, pam. police have just taken down the crime scene tape here at the

sunset gardens apartment. you can see four officers standing in front of what is a restaurant down there that is where the shooting happened. just a moment ago they had their flashlights out and were looking on ground for something. i spoke with a neighbor about last night's shooting. he told me he didn't hear anything but police near this intersection quite frequently. now witnesses returned to the scene from last night's shooting. police gathered up some witnesses from the 11:00 p.m. shooting which police are calling a drive-by shooting and just dropped off some of the witnesses after the witnesses were giving statements downtown. most of the night. police do not have a description of the vehicle. they say there was no license plate on the vehicle. a 20-year-old victim died on the scene. police are not releasing identification pending family notification. they also believe this was a gang-related shooting. but they didn't say why they believe that or provide any evidence as to why that was. they say that it did happen near the intersection of king and story road and that has seen its share of gang-related

shootings over the years here. if you take a quick live look back out here at the scene officers are still here. they've taken down the crime scene tape, but the police crime scene van is still on scene just moved inside the parking lot. now you're seeing some of the people who work at these businesses, some of the employees have been waiting on the outside of the police officer roadway coming here to go to work this morning. we get a chance we're going to walk down and see what police were looking at a moment ago on the ground. live in san jose, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:32. investigators in san mateo are blaming an electric heater for an overnight apartment house fire. this started shortly after 2:00 a.m. on south grant avenue not far from highway 101. at least one person had to be treated for smoke inhalation. the fire crews got everyone else out safely including all the pets. the red cross is now helping to find shelter for those people

who were forced out of their homes. police say a hayward teenager accused of shooting his father got into a heated argument with his father before retrieving the gun. the father's name hasn't been released remains in intensive care. he was shot in the head by his 15-year-old son last wednesday. investigators hope they will be able to speak with the father in the next couple of days. meantime the 15-year-old son is being held in juvenile hall. the search continues for suspects in the shooting death of a 17-year-old boy at a party in bay point. the contra costa county coroner's office has identified the victim as kevin ma reno. investigators found the teenager suffering from a gunshot wound outside a home on riverside drive on friday at about 11:00 p.m. he died at the scene. time now 6:33. tonight council members of walnut creek will consider tougher rules for bars and restaurants that have out of control customers. some of the new proposals include alcohol cut off times

and possibly bans on live music. the proposed crack down comes after several violent incidents in downtown walnut creek many of which happened late at night and fueled by alcohol. tonight's berkeley city council agenda includes one item that is guaranteed to get a lot of attention. the city plans to offer an unusual benefit to city workers. ktvu's jade hernandez just spoke to a city council member and joins us now with an update. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. we spoke to that city council member by phone. he initially proposed this type of coverage for every city employee. now he said he does not know of anyone in particular who would take advantage of this type of coverage, but he says it's necessary for all city employees. and tonight here at city hall the city council will vote on whether or not to set aside $20,000 a year for transgender reassignment surgeries. the monetary limit will be set at that amount every year and would be available on a first come, first serve basis. the coverage would be offered

to each of its 1500 employees. the taxpayer money would cover part of surgery costs which range from $7,000 to more than $50,000. the insurance companies have both told the city insurance premiums for the entire staff would increase if sex change operations were added to coverage. now city council member daryl moore spoke to us by phone this morning and he says the cost of a reassignment surgery can be a burden. >> employees that need sexual reassignment surgery not being able to afford it up front i thought it was important for the city to front that money as one of the benefits for our employees. >> reporter: san francisco has provided this type of coverage for nearly a decade now. the meeting will be held here at city hall in berkeley at 7:00 p.m. a vote is expected tonight. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:35. san jose police are investigating after finding a man dead inside of a home that was tented for fumigation. the body was found yesterday at

a home on lin leer lane. police are speculating the victim was either homeless and trying to stay warm, or it was a burglary attempt and the man was just overcome by the fumes. investigators don't believe the man was killed. >> the guys that were here from the beginning i don't know how they knew that the guy was inside. >> now the home was recently purchased. it was being remodeled. signs were clearly posted warning of the fumigation danger. the victim has been identified but his name has not yet been released. the case of a richmond man accused of raping an elderly woman could go to the district attorney's office today. the 44-year-old anthony square arrested sunday night on suspicion of raping an 80-year- old woman who he is related to by marriage. police say the attack happened at the woman's home. the suspect was taken into custody after being released from a hospital. but investigators are not saying what he was being treated for. time now 6:36.

residents in palo alto will get a chance to meet with police to talk about a recent string of robberies. the police department is holding a community meeting tomorrow night. police say they want people to know they are making progress. since september police say 20 robberies have been reported. so far police have arrested eight suspects. and they have solved six of the cases. now wednesday's meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the cuberly theater on middle field road. plans are underway for a weekend memorial in concord. it is to honor the homeless woman killed in a hit-and-run crash sunday evening. police say the 53-year-old had run on to the road to check on her dog who had been hit by a car. two drivers then hit her. the first stop today try and help her. the second driver stopped briefly then sped away. on saturday homeless advocates will remember the victim at concord's hill crest park.

>> quite weather worn. she was worn out. she lived a hard life. >> police are still looking for the driver who left the scene. he is described as a white male in his 20s with brown hair and blond tips. his female passenger had long dark hair. they left in a dark four door sedan possibly a hatch back. time now 6:37. well, the on time performance of san francisco's muni buses, light rail and cable cars is slipping. that's according to a new report that shows between july and september of last year the on time record was 72%. that's a decrease from the high of 75% recorded during the first three months of 2010. and that's way below muni's goal of 85%. 6:38 is the time right now. back over to sal to check in on the commute. sal. all right. i've been looking at just some of these fog things and steve and i have been telling you the fog is not as pervasive as it was yesterday. but there is fog out there. let's go out and take a look at

what we have. within bay bridge that's backed up for about an eight to ten minute delay. maybe more than that now. it's certainly not a huge delay but certainly there is a bigger delay than yesterday when we almost had no delay. this is a look at san francisco northbound 101. that traffic moves along well. i want to show you a travel time in livermore. you can see grant line road to 680 about 32 minutes there the highlighted route traffic is backing up. it's about normal. certainly a lot more people today than they were yesterday. 6:39. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. you are correct. we have some decrease in the fog but still thick fog out there. san jose web camera from the fine, fine meteorology department there. san francisco state has a nice one if you're thinking about getting into the business. cloud cover to the north. redding is mostly cloudy with a north wind at 7. therein lies the belief better forecast for us tomorrow. north wind as the system moves in to the pacific northwest. our forecast a foggy morning

for some. not everyone but some. sunny today. cool to warm. slightly warmer unless the fog decides to hang around. tomorrow not as much fog. we'll take that into thursday as well. sunny and breezy as we get more of a northerly wind and break up the fog and stir it up. more sunshine, keeping us dry little or no rain. probably no rain until maybe early february. dense fog then sunny today. but as that system dives down from the pacific northwest that will start to kick up the wind and we get what's called mixing. and when you get some wind the fog cannot form. so decrease in the fog as we head into wednesday and thursday. breezy and warmer. a lot of 40s right now. there are a few upper 30s. livermore 43. concord in there. santa rosa 44. hayward at 43. san jose our target forecast. some thick fog. 47. 57 a high of 61. i think it was only like 59 out towards the hill view airport yesterday. for some areas it's a little warmer. for others it stays on the cool side. 48 in sacramento.

tahoe 23. south lake tahoe was 61 yesterday. a record high in reno with 66 also a record high and it's hot. i mean it's hot down in southern california. near 90 for pasadena yesterday. santa barbara was 87. ucla was 86. los angeles 84. and san diego 82. little closer to home big sur was 81. high pressure will continue to keep everything deflected to the north. that system may give us a few high clouds. it's also going to stir up the fog but not until probably tonight into tomorrow. our forecast does have some of that thick fog out there. so dense fog then sunny. by this afternoon cool to warm. highs can go anywhere from 50 to 70 degrees. tonight a little breezy. and i think we'll only see patchy fog. so 54 fairfield. 64 santa rosa. 57 richmond. san francisco, pacifica 62. 70 santa cruz. 61 pleasanton. half-moon bay 63.

good morning to you. welcome back. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we're following for you right now at 6:44. san jose police are out there searching for suspects in a drive-by shooting that left an unidentified 20-year-old man dead. it happened on story road just after 11:00 last night. security is very tight today around uc santa cruz this after a threatening form of graffiti was found in the campus bathroom that threatened violence today. some professors have even canceled classes. some students say they're just going to stay away. on wall street all eyes are on apple stock this morning. this is the first trading day since steve jobs revealed he's taking another medical leave of absence from apple. he'll be away from work indefinitely. at last check, apple stock was

down about 4%. the defense department says a soldier from sacramento was one of two u.s. troops shot and killed by an iraqi soldier they were training. the 43-year-old died on saturday when a trainee shot him and another soldier from illinois. the pentagon says a third u.s. soldier was injured in the incident and at least one iraqi soldier was detained. in iraq today a suicide bomber blew himself up in a crowd of police recruits inty crete killing at least 45 people. authorities say the suicide bomber joined a crowd of more than 100 police recruits and then detonated his vest packed with explosives. again, last reports 45 people were killed, more than 100 others are injured. time now 6:46. there will be fewer police officers patrolling the streets of camden, new jersey, where deep budget cuts take effect today. that city which has the nation's second highest crime rate is laying off 163 police officers.

that's almost half of the police force. camden city officials say they need those cuts to help the city close a $26 million budget gap. about 60 firefighters will also be out of a job. an orange county city could soon use facebook as one way to prevent repeat dui offenders from getting back on the streets. a huntington beach city councilman wants police to pose mug shots of anybody arrested for multiple duis. the councilman says the idea of public shame could keep some people from drinking and driving. however the city's police department says it could also alienate some of the residents. time now 6:47. back over to sal. sal, anything to be aware of this morning commute-wise? i would say the fog, pam and dave, as a matter of fact. now we're looking at 880. we were just able to see some of this. now the top is all fog and you can see the traffic kind of appearing at the bottom of the screen. it's pretty thick fog in oakland. however, just a few miles down the road it's not foggy at all.

or off the road i should say if you're going south to north. bay bridge traffic is -- well, the fog is not there but the traffic is busy from beyond 880 overcrossing. that's about a 1 minute delay at the toll plaza. driving in the livermore valley traffic is busy. highlight through between grant line and 680 it's about all 30 minutes according to our traffic system and department of transportation numbers here. so just give yourself that time. we're back after the holiday for sure. 6:48. let's go to steve. sal, we have dense fog out there. not nearly as bad as yesterday when everybody was widespread. today it's kind of here and there. not everywhere though. we will see some dense fog taking us to about 9:00. dense fog advisory out. fog but then cool chilly cold mornings. there are cooler temperatures this morning. sunny days, no rain, high 70. santa cruz to monterey even near 80 to the valley and out towards big sur. be careful. some of those big pockets of fog and it's really warm in

southern california. looks like a change is getting closer. i know it doesn't look like much but there's a system moving in to the north of us and that's going to pick up the wind starting tonight into tomorrow. today though we have the dense fog then sunshine. some locations will be in the low to mid-60s. others just too much fog in the valley coming right back in. that keeps us in to the 50s. it looks like there will be some mixing and a picking up of that wind which will help to get rid of the fog for wednesday into thursday. decrease in fog only patchy. 43 hayward though. 43 concord. livermore down there as well. 47 san jose and fog, fog, fog. many location wills have to deal with the fog just like yesterday. san jose being one. starting off 47 with fog. we'll go 57 and a high today of 61 with sunshine to mostly sunny skies. here's a system again punching into the north of us. 54 redding. so there's a big difference tahoe two days in a row they've had a record high 60 on sunday. 61 yesterday. and reno with 66 and near 90 degrees for some temperatures down into southern california.

a weak system but the mere fact that it is making it into southern california signals a change headed into tomorrow. today starting off thick fog clear and cold. temperatures cool to warm today 50 to 70. there's a big spread. 50s for many stuck in the fog contra costa county, parts of the north bay. santa rosa and nevada all go 60, 64. 61 san jose. 70 santa cruz. half-moon bay 63 which is warmer than redwood city and mountain view and san mateo. don't always see that but this kind of a pattern you can. decreasing fog more sunshine warmer temps thursday and friday. thank you, steve. a new survey says companies will buy more than 10 million tablet computers this year. the forecast from consulting firm released this morning says health care and retail sectors alone could purchase five million tablets this year. that could open up the market for research in motion's new 7- inch play book tablet set to launch by march. let's check in on wall street

right now. here's a live look at the big board. the new york stock exchange showing the dow is up just about 17 points. of course we have some fairly decent earnings coming in this morning. citi bank pretty big guide posting $1.3 billion in profits but did miss estimates by a little bit the analyst forecast. i want to pull up apple computer because we've been watching. it has started trading looks like this morning and it is down just about $13 a share. it's still at $332 a share. >> that's a lot. >> apple's not exactly cheap. star bucks hopes its customers believe bigger is better. the coffee chain is rolling out the 31-ounce size cold drink. beginning of february for california. so 31-ounce drinks will sell for about 50 cents more. the north bay getting hit with another round of winter weather. which states could see up to six more inches of snow today.
