causes crashes. this morning, you are look -- you are looking at the san mateo bridge. very low fog. we can barely see some of the taillights. just a few miles away, it's crystal clear. steve and i will be along all morning long. we'll be back in a few minutes. at 7:00, let's go back to the desk. a search continues in san jose at this hour for suspects in a deadly drive-by shooting. the victim was found in a parking lot at story road and hopkins drive. kraig debro joins us live from the scene now. >> reporter: police are calling calling this a drive-by shooting. i did speak with a man a few minutes ago. he says he's a friend of the victim. he says he knows what started

all of this. the crime scene investigators just left the scene about 20 minutes ago. they've been here all night. the shooting happened at the sunset gardens plaza on story road around 11:00 p.m. last night. the friend of the shooting victim told me this all stemmed from a fight between two women and the victim came here with some of his other friends who police now are describing as gang members. while they were here, the vehicle pulled up. the victim is 20 years old. police are not releasing his name pending family n otification. we understand the business -- at least from the information

on the door, the business would not have been open at the time of the shooting. we are checking on that as well. reporting live in san jose, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 n ews. >> thank you, kraig. it is 7:02. right now, police in oakland are looking for suspects in a s hooting, an attempted kidnapping. it happened around 11:00 last night on international b oulevard. police say at least two men injured a woman while trying to abduct her. she managed to escape. she's now being treated for a leg wound. security is very tight -- very tight at uc santa cruz. a lot of students plan to stay away fearing violence. it all stems from graffiti scrawled on a bathroom -- on a bathroom wall. some classes have already been cancelled by professors.

trading on wall street began just over 30 minutes ago. right now, all eyes are on apple stock. this is the first day of trading since steve jobs revealed that he's taking another medical leave of absence. here is a look at the big board right now. well, that's not the big board. that's my good friend, dave clark. >> right. >> apple's stock is down about 4%, i can tell you, and that's dragging the nasdaq down at least 3 points. the dow, however, is up 32 at 11,819 and s&p down 2.5. steve jobs' announcement came early yesterday during the martin luther king holiday. he's taking his second medical leave of absence in two years. he will be out of work i ndefinitely and that's raising new concerns about the health of the 55-year-old apple ceo. in recent years, he's battled pancreatic cancer and undergone

a liver transplant. later on, apple will release their earnings which could counterbalance jobs' leave of absence. dick cheney is making medical news. he's now considering getting a heart transplant. he currently has a b attery- powered heart pump but he finds it awkward and u ncomfortable. he admits getting a transplant. it's a very tough decision given his long history of heart trouble. budget problems enforced -- have forced a lot of cities to slash employee benefits. but tonight, the berkeley city council may add one. this one is not your typical employee perk. jade hernandez just talked to a member of the city council and is back live with the latest on what's happening. tonight, here at city hall, a special kind of coverage is expected to be discussed and voted on providing sax change coverage for every employee

right now in berkeley. >> those who need this kind of surgery, this is like someone who would need an expensive heart valve replacement or some other major medical surgery. >> reporter: we spoke by phone within the last hour with the city council who initially proposed this type of coverage back in 2007. he doesn't know of anyone who would take advantage of the coverage right now. city council members will decide on whether or not to set aside $ 20,000 a year per person for transgender reassignment surgeries. the monetary limit would be set at that limit every year and would be available on a f irst- come, first-served basis. the costs range from $7,000 to more than $50,000. kaiser and health net have both told the city insurance premiums for the entire staff

enough coming up over concord. i don't see anything now. it doesn't mean it's not there. see how it's stop and go there? that's not typical. usually traffic is moving along better than that. the westbound bay bridge, that commute is backed up for a bout -- well, i would say a 1 2- minute delay, 12 to 15 m inutes. definitely a lot of people coming into san francisco. and northbound 101 in san jose, there is a crash at yerba buena road. traffic is slow on 280. on the peninsula, 101 and 280 still look good and in the livermore valley. look at all of that slow traffic coming in from the grant line road. it's really slow coming into livermore and it stays that way all the way to dublin. sal, still a dense fog advisory. we still have low clouds. there are some clear areas. the temperatures dipped into the upper 30s to low 40s. it's a little colder this morning but the valley fog is there. so fog advisory is out, reduced

looks like a decrease in the f og. that means warmer temperatures as we head into midweek. a worker at the conocophillips refoo -- refinery is recovering after being hurt on the job at 8:00 last night at the plant on re-- rodeo. contra costa county officials say the worker was knocked out by a plexiglass panel. the worker was taken to john muir medical center. we don't know his condition. the refinery has not commented on the incident. but if we get any more further developments, we'll comment o n -- we'll bring them to you. lawmakers go back to work for the first time since the arizona shooting at the top of their agenda, healthcare reform. we'll bring you a live report from washington. humane remains stolen -- human remains stolen.

the group is called got mercury. they say they collected samples from more than 40 bay area s upermarkets. representatives for the seafood industry say this group is w aging a pr war against eating seafood in order to save sea turtles that get caught in f ishing nets. no parent paying for college wants to hear this -- a new report found college students are not learning much, especially in their first two years. partly to blame schools that fail to emphasize student l earning, the report says faculty members are often too distracted by their own research to focus on teaching. add to that students who are more interesting in socializing. the report found that after two years in college, 45% of s tudents showed no significant gains in learning. that's really surprising. >> that's troubling. >> as a parent of a college student, i don't want to hear

riverside residents want compensation from the city for damage caused by last month's storm. 0 claims have been filed a lready -- 30 claims have been filed already. the city attorney says he wants more. residents say they should be reimbursed for the damage done to their homes and cars. this morning, regis philbin announced his retirement from his weekday talk show. he made the announcement at the start of "regis in kelly." he has hosted that show for 28 years. he says he will step down at the end of the summer. he gave no specific date. it's not sure who will replace him. >> there is a rumor he might be replaced by kelly ripa ahusband, -- ripa's husband.

back to dave. >> thank you, pam. 7:31. well, this morning, police in oakland are searching for suspects in three separate s hootings. it happened during the martin luther king holiday. investigator the say the violence started around 4::00 p.m. yesterday. one man was shot at 80th and international boulevard. young man was shot several times and died there at the scene. police say a second man was shot about an hour later at 14th avenue and east 27th street. now, he is expected to survive. the third shooting happened just before -- just before 8:00 on east 17th street. police say a gunman started shooting at two victims. both young men are expected to survive that attack. investigators say it's too early to determine whether all of these shootings are detected. a hayward teenager accused of shooting his father got into a heated argument with his father before grabbing a gun. now, the father whose name has not been released, remains in

intensive care, police say was shot by his son at the home on g ading road. police hope to talk to the father in the next couple of days. his son is in juvenile hall. palo alto residents will get a chance to meet with police about a recent string of robberies. since september, police say 20 robberies have been reported so far. police have arrested eight suspects and solved six cases. tomorrow's meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the theater on middlefield road. 7:33. tonight, city council members of walnut creek will consider stricter rules for some bars and restaurants. some of the new proposals include cutting off alcohol at certain times and banning even

live music. the proposed crackdown comes at several incidents in downtown walnut creek. many of which happened late at night and were fueled by a lcohol. concerns that moon -- concerns after reports of several derailments in the last week. tara moriarty joins us with details. >> reporter: good morning. we're here at the west portal muni station where we've been trying to speak to some officers this morning about these latest allegations. now, according to the "san francisco examiner" in less than one week, five trains have derailed. not on the track that the passengers use but at the s toressage facility. they say the light rails slipped off near the b.a.r.t. station. this is the place where all of the trains depart from.

85%. well, san francisco's airport commission is trying to attract more international carriers to sfo. so today, the commissioners will consider lowering operating fees for flights to and from canada and mexico. right now, any international flight is charged $50. but the commission could drop that by a third. there are three airlines that fly to canada and five that fly to mexico out of sfo. more carriers could create more competition which could lead to lower airfares. this morning, delta airlines

reported fourth quarter earnings that exceeded the investor expectations. delta says it made $19 million in the last quarter of 2010. now it plans to expand capacity as much as 7%. other airlines will report later on this week. the industry experts predict the 8th largest u.s. based airlines will have their best year in a decade. a lot of that is because ticket demand is going up. so fares are rising. the airlines are collecting more money but also from luggage and other fees. we want to see how people are moving around the bay area right now on this tuesday morning. sal? >> there's trouble in walnut creek and concord. an suv's flipped over. there is a minor crash. traffic is backed up. it's really slow. we also know it's pretty foggy in they're a -- in that area as

on earnings reports, including citigroup posting a $1.3 billion profit. a lot of focus is on apple's stock. that's bringing the nasdaq down now. just over 3 points. apple's stock itself is down about 3 1/ 1/2 points. on news that steve jobs is taking another medical leave. 7:44. ten days after being shot in the head, arizona congresswoman, gabrielle giffords is showing more signs of improvement. doctors say surgery to relieve pressure was successful. giffords' husband mark kelly says she's been smiling at him and was able to rub his neck. kelly said he would be willing to meet the parents of the suspected gunman and does not blame them for the shooting.

sacramento was among two u.s. troops shot and killed by an iraqi soldier. they were training. 43-year-old martin lamar was killed in mosul when that t rainee shot him as well as a soldier from illinois. the pentagon says a third soldier was injured in the incident and at least one iraqi soldier was detained. residents in san francisco's bayview district say it's not right that people outside their neighborhood sneak in at night and dump trash on the streets. the public works department says it's an ongoing problem. they usually do this at night, making it difficult to find out who is doing it. every morning when we come out there's trash on the c orners. , on a daily basis.

this morning. let's see if we can get more information from some of the people who worked there, when it does open. police came out here around 11:00 last night on information there was a shooting here. when they got here and began investigating, they soon d eveloped information that this was a drive-by gang-related shooting. according to one witness, there was a vehicle seen leaving the area at the time of the s hooting. that vehicle -- they didn't have a description for it and that vehicle did not have license plates on the back. but in speaking to it gentlemen this morning about what h appened -- to this gentleman this morning about what h appened, he said one of the persons who died in the shooting is, in fact, the gang member. he said there was a fight between two women on opposing gang sides and that fight led up to the shooting as the friend was chasing some of the people on one side, one of the people pulled out a gun and began f iring and his his friend. he believes his friend stumbled here in front of his business. that's where he ended up and that's where police found him. police had spoken to witnesses
