the driveway of the home the family home here in patterson. those candles are left over from last night's vigil. it has clearly been and as you will here a painful two days for the boy's family. the focus of the search had been on the delta mendota canal. two miles from the home where cardenas was abducted by rodriguez. the astranged boyfriend of juliani's distraught mother. >> please, let him come home. i know juliani is telling you that he misses me and he wants to come home. you need to bring him home. >> reporter: it has been an unsettling 24 hours for the family as dive teams search the mandeta canal. today, a second car was pulled from the dark cold swift moving water, same color but not the car they are looking for.

the dive effort is suspended for now, drag lines in the canal turned up nothing more. the boy's mother is not surprised. >> if a car was pulled out, i knew my son or jose were not going to be in there. because i mean, that's not where it would happen, i already know. >> reporter: any minute now we expect to hear from the sheriff's department, results of a tire tracks leading to that canal. they're going to try to match those tire tracks. if they do not match that mean they may resume their search of that canal. the amber alert for 4-year- old cardenas remains in place at this hour. investigators suspect the alleged abductor was driving that silver toyota carolla with

the california license plate 6hbw445. rodriguez was last seen wearing a white and black shirt, checkered shorts and a benie. juliani was in dark shirts and shorts when he was abducted. several students on lock down in the school for the deaf ktvu's paul stevenson is live with the scare. >> reporter: when officers got that call. they were coming over here thinking 40 people were shot. this is a vast campus, on one side is the school of the blind. out here what you're looking at is the school of the deaf. it's on an acre, so authorities had to act very quickly to put the schools on lock down. >> i thought, oh my god we have to see my daughter. it's terrible. you see this stuff on the news all the time. >> reporter: police got a 911 call that there was a mass shooting in the school for the deaf. >> according to the caller,

there was a shooter who had taken down at least 40 students. >> reporter: dozens of officers were on the scene and ordered both schools with the combined population of more than 500 students into lock down mode while officers went room to room looking for the alleged gunman. that's when they found this call was a prank. >> this is not a joking matter. absolutely not. so we will do our best efforts here to track down this individual. >> reporter: if there is a bright side to this incident. both schools were able to do an emergency lock down drill. only 50% of the teachers for the deaf can hear so the staff were notified through the school's visual alert system. although at that time they didn't know it was a hoax. >> the emergency coordinators in each building are aware of what their responsibilities responsibilities and they need to make sure everybody is calm, that everybody is safe. >> we run drills all the time. so administrators know what to do. >> reporter: officers do not have any leads in this case, since both schools are state run, the chp are holding an

investigation. live in fremont, i'm paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. strong winds gusting to more than 60 miles per hour in some parts of the bay area this morning caused big time problems. as allie rasmus reports. >> reporter: this cedar tree was a casualty of this morning's wind gust. several branches broke off of the trunk. when the branches came crashing down, they shattered the upstairs window. the woman who lives here heard it happen around 6:30 this morning. >> it sounded like clunk,clunk, clunk, clunk. >> reporter: did you know what it was. >> we had had this happen before but in a minor way. >> reporter: strong winds

brought down another 100-foot tree on to the highway. it blocked two lanes of traffic for an hour and a half slowing down the morning commute. in redwood road in oakland the wind knocked down another large tree. this one crashed a tree below it, no one was hurt. >> it's really, really limpy. it woke me up this morning. >> reporter: in berkeley, public works crews spanned out across the city cleaning up the mess of down trees and branches. the homeowner here says she has to pay for this clean up herself as you can see her tree is on private property and not on the street or the sidewalk. but the homeowner says she's just glad she didn't park her car on this driveway and that no one was hurt. in berkeley, allie rasmus, ktvu news. so can we expect more high winds? ktvu chief meteorologist terry bennett chief meteorologist bill martin joins us with the

former e bay ceo meg whitman. the change comes as hp launches an investigation into the circumstances leading to the ousting of mark hurd, his departure over allegations of sexual harassment and inaccurate information. in court papers filed last week. hp reported the investigation will be conducted by the board itself. it will also look into the pay out hurd received when he left. the newest unemployment picture has improved. the number of people seeking unemploy 400,000 last week. analysts say a drop to that level is considered a signal of modest job growth. the number has fallen by 16% over the past four months signaling employers are laying off fewer workers. a new ranking finds some of the best companies to work for are right here in the bay area. google is the top local firm on the list of fortes 100 best

companies in the u.s. ranking fourth. netapp ranking five. all of the other companies are high tech expect for number 22. dpr construction. fortunes list is based on pay, health care, life balance and other perks. the number one company in the u.s., north carolina software maker, sis. drops in home prices as buyers continue to take advantage of foreclosures. median home prices dipped more than 1% last month to $375,000. figures also showed december sales jumped almost 18% from november. data quick says buyers are continuing to take advantage of low priced foreclosures which accounted for about 31% of last month's sales. on wall street, the drop in new unemployment benefits

congressional leaders on capitol hill. reed has called china's president a dictator but today said it's important to maintain a dialogue on issues like japan. china's president received a warmer occasion at a gathering of business executives. in his speech to executives anddiplomats, the chinese leader pledged to promote economic growth in china and the u.s. he said the economy for tibet is out of the question. he also descended china's military build up. >> we do not engage in arms race. >> reporter: the president said china is the largest developing

nation and that it will become more democratic at its own pace. and the dinner being put on by the asian pacific american institute for congressional studies. and as ktvu allyson burns reports, it came a day after they attended another high level event. >> reporter: the mayors of oakland and san francisco just inaugurated this month joined a who's who of politics. >> there are actors and industryists. i had a long conversation with yoyo ma i am a big fan of his.

>> equal citizens in every way in this very, very great land of opportunity called america. >> reporter: both mayors are spending most of the week in dc for the annual mayor's conference here. they are also lobbying members of congress and cabinet secretaries to keep up federal funding for local projects. but there are some big new challenges as congress tries to cut spending and the republican take over in the house means, the bay area has lost some political clout in washington. >> i know that the political clout may have changed here but i think the issues are still the same. we are a major city in this country. >> reporter: mayor lee told me he spoke to the chinese president and personally invited him to visit the bay area but told him he had to come within the year, because mayor lee is only serving a one year interim term. reporting from washington, d.c., allyson burns, ktvu news.

us didn't notice the wind. they funnel, what happens is when the air sinks out of the atmosphere they start to funnel down. i'm not doing a good job of picking them up. but there's something called the ventori effect and that slowed them down. we got going up to 50 miles per hour. so berkeley we had some trees down. oakland we had trees down, branches. if you lived in san rafael or mill valley, what was the big deal? it came down to those canyons funneling the air. the wind squeezes out of those canyons and what it does is they accelerate. we did not see a wind advisory. we don't have a wind advisory now. the upshot, winds going away, temperatures today were up into

students complained of breathing problems after a science experiments. school officials say the experiment involved demonstrating the acidity of different household items, including bleach. one student was taken to the hospital. >> we're told by the mother that he is doing well. breathing well. >> ten other students were affected but none needed treatment. teachers and staff are looking into exactly what cause chemicals caused the reaction. without siting the sale of medical marijuana. the herbal essence dispensary was shut down. even if the zoning had been approved concord law prohibits the operation of medical marijuana dispensaries. what congresswoman giffords did today that has doctors

say they are optimistic about giffords recovery after she stood up with assistance and moved her lips in what appears to be an effort to speak. her family plans to move the arizona congresswoman to a rehappen hospital in houston tomorrow near where her husband lives and works as an astronaut. giffords was shot january 8th in an attack that left six people dead including a federal judge. >> jackie spear held a congress on your corner meeting with constituents. >> reporter: jackie spears says watching these images made her nauseous and triggered flash backs of her then boss ryan 13 years ago. so mrs. spear is now calling for all in congress members congress on your corner events once a year.

it happened at an elementary school in oakland. and it's not the only incident at that school. ktvu's rita williams has been working on this story all day. she's in the newsroom now with what she's uncovered. rita. >> reporter: frank what oakland school districts officials say apparently what happened at an east oakland elementary school is hard to fathom. >> no. >> i still don't know how it could happen. >> reporter: that was the reaction from parents today when we told them what officials confirmed to us. apparently happened here at their children's school last week markum elementary. >> as we understand we believe that oral sex occurred. >> did occur? >> correct. >> reporter: that's oral sex inside of a classroom here, between a boy and a girl. both second graders. >> they are imitating what they see, they didn't will your -- didn't learn it at school. >> reporter: while we were on

campus, we heard the office summoning teachers to the office. by the end of the day. the principal sent this notice home to parents telling them that initial findings confirm not only that incident but another in the same classroom last week with several students at least partially undressing. >> it's not unheard of for children to engage in sexually explorative behaviors at a young age. but what's concerning about this incident is the fact that it occurred in a classroom that's supposed to be a safe haven. >> reporter: this came to life yesterday when students told a teacher's aid who told the principal. >> it is an unacceptable situation. >> reporter: district officials will not say if any teachers have been suspended. second graders who observed what happened are being offered

counseling. some of the students involved in ingesting rat poison in a san francisco middle school have been suspended. following the incident last thursday at martin luther king jr. middle school. the district says it now believes some of the students knew the tablets were poisonous not candy when they encouraged others to eat them. as ktvu rob roth tells us, police are casting a wider net during this year's event. >> reporter: san francisco police officials went store to store this afternoon in the city's portola district today. with the chinese new year celebration about a week away, police came with a message that this happy time can bring a darker side. >> the asian and local criminals are also out to prey on potential victims.

the season brings opportunity for extortion from small business, street robberies and pickpocketing, burglary and home invasions. >> reporter: in past years, such warnings were reserved for merchants in china town, but in recent years the asian population has seen dramatic increases in neighborhoods including portola, visitation valley. where they investigated several charges. the neighborhood gets busier this time of year. >> the neighborhood gets more crowded because people are shopping for the new year, to get ready. >> reporter: the owner here says she knows what to do if there are any problems. >> if you see something are you going to call police? >> yeah, yeah, i'll call. >> reporter: that's exactly what police and community leaders want, for store owners not to be afraid to call them at the first signs of any problems. in san francisco, rob roth.

san francisco police are asking for the public's help in finding a group of young men who allegedly killed a man. luis vanegas was with a group of friends at the christmas tree overlook when he was shot and killed. vanegas had gotten into an argument with two or three men, one of whom pulled out a gun and opened fire. the men sped away in a white honda oddesy mini van. 30-year-old george hernandez was hit in the head following a fight at the temple nightclub. the fourth year medical student had told him family he wanted to be an organ donors. family have not revealed anything on the donations but hope that encourages others to become donors. officials say machines were rigged and that winning was

nearly impossible. players paid by the quarter for a chance to win prizes like ipods or rolls of quarters with 20 or $50 bills wrapped around them. prosecutors say the store owner bears some legal responsible along with the company that installed those machines. the owner of a san rafael pizza parlor has agreed to work with city planners at the color of their new business. right now you can see it is painted bright yellow. the city asked the owner to consider toning it down a bit by adding another color. the owner said he will be happy to cooperate. mount diablo school board is expected to make a difficult decision between now and february 8th. which schools to close in an effort to close $1.5 million. the board heard recommendations last night from it's school committee.

the committee recommended closing three schools chosen from the following list of seven. in concord glen brook middle school along with silverwood, whan avenue and holbrook. san jose's east side union high school district has been ordered to pay $2.5 million to a livermore construction company. it follows a dispute over the cost of construction projects at independence high school. on top of the one preponderate $1.7 million a judge awarded. the district has district floor has agreed to the award.

an admission policy at uc berkeley and ucla will now be used at all the other university of california campuses. it's called holistic review, it gives each applicant a score

based on an extensive review of individual, academic and nonacademic factors. the board of regents voted to expand the holistic testings to other campuses. the man who leaked the pentagon papers is coming to the defense of wikileaks. he said that wikileaks has shown the internet is a powerful tool for pulling the curtain back on government. the digital music sales slowed down considerably last year. the international federation of the phonographic industry reports a growth. it's the first time the growth has been in single digits since

2004 when the music industry began making significant money selling songs online. sales hit $7.6 million. and strokes in people infected with hiv jumped 60% between 1997 and 2006 while declining six% among the general population. john hopkins university researchers say the increase may be due to the use of life saving inhibitor drugs used to treat hiv. those drugs have the side effect of increasing cholesterol and lipil level in blood. a mountain view apartment complex is being treated for a bedbug infestation. bedbugs were recently discovered in two units on calderon avenue. they've been using special

stanford university is taking steps to bring back their rotc program. they are expected to make a recommendation in may. the u.s. military reserve officer training corp.

was barred from campus in 1973 partly because of the ban on openly gay service members. they will begin discussing bringing back the program after the don't ask don't tell repeal. >> reporter: handcuffed and lined up for booking. federal law enforcement agents from new york, new jersey and rhode island arrested more than 100 suspected mobsters from at least five organized families. including the bonanno family. >> this is one of the largest operations against the mafia in the fbi's history both in terms of the number of defendants arrested and charged and the scope of the criminal activity that is alleged. >> reporter: several alleged high level mobsters including one in italy were caught in the

got channeled through those canyons. they also got channeled up to mount diablo. in those areas, if you talk to the folks that were there today they will tell you how windy it was. wind gusts in the east bay hills up to 55. 68 in santa rosa today, 65 in fremont. but a nice run, the weather has been nice. the fog is non non nonexistent. when you clean up the atmosphere with this much wind you get really clean air quality. no spare the air night tonight. no worries about fog. 35 in napa. 36 in antioch with a 42 in fremont. those are the overnight lows for friday morning. here we go through the computer model. you see clouds trying to trickle in on friday but everything stays offshore. you can see the winds pushing the fog or the clouds away. so really we're just into a dry
