a car that might be connected to this case drive into that canal tuesday night. sheriff's department says they will be back out there with sonar equipment tomorrow. more on that in a moment. talking about that lead that went cold. there was a potential sighting reported in the town of delano which is near bakersfield. that reported siting is now unfounded which leaves the family here in their patterson home still waiting for answers. >> a day long search of the delta mendota canal turned up nothing connected to the case and an agonizing wait remains for the family of 4-year-old julani cardenas. >> you need to bring him home. because i don't know if you're taking care of him and i don't know if he's hungry or thirsty. >> reporter: cardena says that her son was snatched from the arms of her mother by jose

rodriguez, her former boyfriend. the sheriff dive team suspended the search of the mendota canal. a witness noticed a car driving into the canal tuesday, 45 minutes after the abduction. there's no additional evidence of a car in the canal. a frequent site for stolen cars. >> at one time they found 10 stolen cars in one day during an exercise. finding the cars that are not the cars we weren't searching for is very common in the mendota canal. >> reporter: you heard in that piece that the search in that canal has been suspended. the sheriffs say they will resume that search tomorrow morning using sonar equipment. it's unclear what prompted the resumption of the search but they say they will be using

that equipment to search underground structures, basically an underground camera to resume the search in that canal. an oakland elementary school is investigating a case of young children experimenting with sex inside a classroom. in a story we reported exclusively. the indent happened between two second graders last week at markum elementary. a school spokesman says it involved a boy and a girl engaging in sex. >> it's not unusual for children to explore sex at a young age, what happened was that it happened in a school classroom. >> the school's principal sent a letter to parents explaining what happened and that an investigation is under way. a rumor of a mass shooting prompted a lock down today for

hundreds of students in fremont. after getting the bogus call, dozens off officers went out to the site. >> we run drills on this all the time. so students and staff knew what to do. they locked their door, they lowered their blind. they stayed away from windows. >> soon officers found it was just a hoax. and it is back to jail for an 19 time dui offender. officers found alcohol inside his house. he will be eligible for release in 18 months. beal's dui convictions span 48 years. and ktvu's david stevenson is live in the city now with a

public campaign the assessor is campaigning. >> reporter: opposition to that crack down is coming from an unexpected source. with drivers now able to use anything from coins to credit cards to pay for street parks, san francisco municipal agency reports, revenue from tickets is down $7 million. the agency is now stepping up enforcement with traffic ntrol officers writing more tickets for yellow zone violations. >> there's no doubt that revenue is part of issuing parking tickets. but the main thing we issue parking tickets for, is making sure that parking is available and upholding the law. >> i think people are going to be most likely to come and shop because they're worried about getting tickets and it's not

time in 28 year, the bay area is now out of the top five worse commutes moving to number six. fiver years ago commuters were delayed 70 hours on average last year, last year it dropped to 49. >> that is a testimony to the impact that voter approved projects have had on improving congestionere in the bay area. road sensors, metering lights and signs have all helped improve traffic. transportation officials also say there were fewer cars on the road because of the bad economy. winds of up to 60 miles per hour knocked over two big trees in the east bay today. one of the trees fell on to the westbound lanes of i580 near park boulevard in oakland. as you might imagine create add major back up for the morning commute. around that same time in berkeley, part of another tree fell on to power lines and then hit a house near college avenue and wolsey. the 110-year-old cedar tree hit

a window at the house and took down the gutters but neither incident caused any injuries. the most anticipated big wave surf contest will not happen this weekend. robert handa talked with contest surfers who voted today that the waves at half-moon bay just aren't worthy. >> reporter: it almost happened, the jay at maverick big wave invitational. everyone with it's new name as famous with the contest that isn't held until the surf is big enough for the world's top 22 surfers. then those competitors have 45 hours to get their boards to half-moon bay. although many observers said they thought conditions were correct, surfers did not agree. >> are there going to be waves all day long. he might have just been lucky and caught the two waves in the heat. >> reporter: many surf fans say

arizona congresswoman giffords took a few steps and

has now made attempts as speaking. her husband mark kelly told reporters today that his wife was able to walk with some help and look out the window of her hospital room in tucson. she's everyone scrolled through an i pad. giffords is expected to be sent to a rehabilitation center in houston. and congresswoman spears says she wants to name january ninth congress on your corner day. spear was also a victim of a shooting during the jones town massacre. she says quote we won't advance effective legislation by erecting more walls around us. an activist group put up a memorial flag pole at the state

capital today. the group save our state put up the 20-foot pole and raised a flag to half staff in memory of two border patrol agents killed in recent years. immigrant rights activists say the way to stop violence at the border is to reform california's immigration laws. identical twin sisters from vallejo enlisted into the military on the same day. why the sisters joined the army when they did. >> this is what i wore ever since this funeral, i wore this and i have never taken it off. >> i keep her rings on me. >> reporter: the sisters keep their mother close to them. the identical sisters enlisted in the u.s. army. >> she was sad and she was crying but she was happy. >> reporter: the 18-year-old identical twins had been thinking about enlisting for a while. they were born in peru and came to the u.s. when they were six

years old. they told their mother who had this to say. >> there's stuff you're going to learn that i wasn't going to be able to teach you. more discipline, new experiences and she was like, if that's really what you want to do go for it. >> reporter: the recruiter says twins enlisting the same day is rare. >> the closest we found was a set of fraternal twins in 1983. but a set of identical twins, nowhere we found a set of identical twins enlisted on the same day. >> reporter: the twins will go to north carolina, then they will go their separate ways. it'll be the first time that they'll be apart. but they say they feel better since their mother gave them

in the mild. 35 in napa, forget the fog, it's hot going to happen. -- it's not going to happen. it's just too much mixing. clear skies because of this high pressure. not just friday but saturday, sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday of next week it's going to stay dry as the storm heads well to the north. the storm has been shunted to the south. we are fog free. actually this wind has been a blessing in a way because had it not shown up we are really getting that fog entrenched in the inland bay valleys. sometimes i've seen it happen when it doesn't get any wind for weeks on end, and you cannot get rid of it until you get a big storm on here. and the car wrecks on 99 and the central valley could get real bad. so it's good to get the fog out of here. 65 in san jose, 67 in morgan hill. that's your friday. nice looking friday. nice looking saturday and sunday as well. the best places to go right now up to the sonoma county coastline, beautiful weather.

no fog. right at the beaches out there in bodega bay. 68, 69 degrees. >> and no fog. wow. turns out three of the top hotels in the world are in the bay area. at least according to the world's largest travel website. bartosano in napa was named the best for relaxation and spa. the onmi was named fourth for best luxury. and menor mansion was named eighth for best service. wall street today took a hit following news that china will take steps to slow it's economic expansion. economists expect that china central bank will increase interest rates to slow growth and keep inflation in check. the dow shed almost three points. the nasdaq shed almost 13

points. the median home price went down 1% last month. according to realty trackers data quick, the number of homes sold in the bay area also fell from 7,800 homes from december of 2009 to about 7,200 homes last month. data quick reports 31% of last month's sales were foreclosures. a new study headed by an oakland nonprofit shows foods marketed toward children are not as nutritious as advertised. 60 labels that read better for you did not meet the nutrition standards set by the nutritional fda standards. >> we think as parents knew that the first ingredient was sugar it wouldn't necessarily be something they want to feed to their kids. >> reporter: a coalition of new
