restaurant and a grocery store. we're over this area. at this point we don't know how that person may have died. we to have a news crew heading for the scene right now. we'll bring you an update on what we know in just a couple of minutes. >> at any moment, search teams will be back at a can until patterson looking for clues in the kidnapping of a four-year- old boy. we look at why this search has now changed. good morning, jane. >> reporter: good morning. today divers will not go back into the canal, it's just too murky. within the hour, authorities are expected to drop sonar equipment into the canal. this is the delta mendota canal after a silver stolen lexus was pulled from the water.

tire tracks are are being compared to the tread on that lexus. the deputy sheriff explained for us this morning why they have turned to sonar equipment to continue this search operation today. >> our dive team searched the waters as much as they could. there's two areas of the canal that we cannot get to just for safety concerns. because of the way the canal system works the pressures and the force of the water, our divers were unable to search those areas. >> reporter: last night we brought you new cellphone video of the little boy who was abducted by, a man he has known

all of his life. jose esteban rodriquez abducted the boy when he was told he couldn't see the boy anymore. the mother is nervous, because she doesn't know what is going to hap we understand that that sonar equipment is expected to arrive within the hour, and they hope to have that equipment in the water sooner than they had dive teams if the water yesterday morning. it is 7:04. some house guests ended up hostages after interrupting a burglar. it happened on myrtle dale road last night around 8:00. the women, all in their 70s, called 911 and told police they were being held hostage. a s.w.a.t. team was called in and entered

the home. they did not find the suspects, the victims are all safe this morning. >> one was able to get out of the home on her own, the other locked herself in the bedroom. they're all in good condition, were not injured at all. >> investigators only have a vague description of the suspect. they tell ktvu they won't know if they got away with anything until they talk to the home's owner. time now 7:04. well, how could it happen? that's the question a lot of parents are asking right now after finding out that second graders had sex in class. we were the first to break this story on our 5:00 newscast. we have a live report from the school right now. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, dave. we did just speak to a parent who had two children who attend the elementary school here in oakland. she said she is flagger ghasted by this disturbing sexual misconduct. she said school officials were

told about the situation, but were not told that the children involved were only second graders. parents did receive a notice yesterday afternoon from the principle. they confirmed that two second graderred had oral sex in the classroom last week. now parents are demanding answers. they want a probe done into these children's backgrounds. >> that's not right. something is going on. they need to be interviewing mom and dad and teacher, and i don't know, whoever else we have to. >> reporter: a spokesman said all of this came to light yesterday when students told a teacher's aid who to told the principal. they will not say if any teachers have been suspended, just that action is being taken on this situation.

breaking news. we want to take you back to vallejo. over the scene of an active crime investigation. we have been told police are vestigating a body found in a car in a parking lot between a howard johnson's restaurant and a grocery store. you can see in these live pictures police tape and police officers and investigators down there on the scene. at this point, we don't know how the person died, or really have any other information, but we do have a crew heading to

oakland getting the high- profile invitation to the white house state dinner. they were the guests of honor at another reception last night. mayors from all over the country are hear for meetings with each other. oakland's mayor tells us that one of her top priorities is boosting funding for local school programs, and she said that she talked about it with the secretary of education. >> i asked him to take another look at an initiative that links school tosca rears, that more closely links schools with employers so that our young people will stay in school. >> the mayors are getting a pretty tough message from president obama this morning that they should not expect much in the way of federal funding next year because of those stimulus dollars that have been flowing to cities are

running out. it is 7:17. governor jerry brown has declared a new fiscal emergency to give lawmakers more time to work on a solution to the state's budget crisis. the emergency declaration is largely procedural. it basically resets the clock that gives lawmakers 45 days to agree on a budget plan. if there is no budget deal within that time, lawmakers will be blocked from acting on on other legislative matters that are not related to the budget. more than two months since she lost the race for governor, meg whitman is wishing governor jerry brown success. she is one of five new page named to the hewlett-packard board of directors. the actual event was closed to the media. before the event, the told the chronicle she cares about california and hopes that california realizes its goals. some highly paid university

of california executives are getting even more money now. uc regents awarded one-time 10% pay raises to three financial managers yesterday. officials deto fend these pay hikes saying the raises are needed to keep the university competitive. the world champion san francisco giants are proving success comes with a price. team owners are expected to spend roughly $115 million on player salaries this season. that's the first time the giants payroll has ever climb aid above the mid-90s. nearly every player from the championship team will be back, and many got big raises in order to stay with the team. and the giants have not

breaking news right now in vallejo. we want to show you a live picture from news chopper 2. about two hours ago, a body was found in a car. at this point, we don't know exactly which one, but it might be the white car in the middle there. looks like a yellow tarp inside

and police looking inside that vehicle. now, this is a parking lot that is shared by the grossry outlet and howard johnson's. it's on admiral callahan lane right next to interstate 80, in case you are familiar with that area. we got the report that this body was found around 5:15 in the morning. we really don't have any other information on that. we don't know the gender. we don't know how the person died, the age, and, at this point, we are continuing to follow the investigation, but, again, you are advised to stay out of the area. this is vallejo near howard johnson's. we to have a reporter on the way to the scene and will have an update shortly. >> at any money search teams goring back to that canal in patterson. a search was supposed to start about a half hour ago, but they're starting off a little late there. we're watching what's happening

out there. we can tell you that high-tech sonar equipment will be brought in to search an underground portion of that canal. a witness claims he actually saw a silver kaplan sponge that canal just 45 minutes after tuesday's kidnapping of little juliani cardenas. we will have a live update coming up at 8:00 on what is happening out there this morning. we also want to show you again this surveillance video. this is the suspect's silver toyota corolla. it was taken to a gas station parking lot in patterson about 45 minutes before that kidnapping. the driver went inside and purchased some beer. now, they have also told us, the authorities, that the amber alert in this case, as we're looking at the license plate in

demanding the same thing. initial find tings confirm two second graders had oral six inside the classroom last week. there was also another incident in the same classroom last week with several students at least partially unchrissing. we spoke to a pediatrician who had some harsh words. >> for children even seeing this type of behavior, or being allowed to see this type of behavior or be engaged in this type of behavior. these children are not 17, they are 7 years old. this is not appropriate. >> reporter: a spokesman with the oakland unified school district said all of this came to light yesterday when students told a teachers aid who in turn told a principal. they will not say if teach

students have been suspended, but that that proper action is being taken. we'll have more on this story coming up. it is 7:34. police in oakland have issued a community alert for people living and working in the lake merit area. investigators say a woman was robbed and sexually assaulted on tuesday. police are trying to determine whether the crime is connected to two other sexual assaults in the same area late last year. however, police are not revealing exactly where this latest attack took place. one person we spoke to this morning feels police should not hold back that information. >> i think it would make people more aware, and so we would pay closer attention, as well as make sure that we're kind of walking together, walking in groups and doing what we need to do to be protected. >> police are advising people to try and stay in well-lit

flight at the oakland airport, not going to be a big delay on the freeways getting there, and there's plenty of parking. also we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's backed up for about a 10 to 12-minute delay, so the delay time has gone up a little bit. and this morning, if you're driving in antii don't care, we have slow traffic, of course, right in the middle of antii don't care heading west, and still have the crash in a bad location here. this road obviously very busy this time of the morning, and that interchange is shut down for at least another hour as the investigators finish up their investigation. i would stay on 24 or 80 and avoid san pablo dam road. let's go to steve. a few up thes to point out. one would be some fog has come

the victim. when i did talk to a police source out here, they said this person was a former gang member who had turned his life around. the police knew his person before and they knew him now. other details of what happened here, they're working right now, crime scene investigators are on the scene. a lot of people very emotional out here about what happened. apparently, according to family members, the victim was on his way to work. don't know where he worked just yet. there's no a howard johnson's here and a grossly outlet. we have a little work to do to find out what the person was doing here, and speak ising with police about any leads they might have on this. a lot to follow up on. we'll check back for an update. it is 7:42. shelters time to shine. why this is such a big day for an animal shelter in the east bay that first opened for business in 1927.

general electric plant in upstate new york. he'll put the spotlight on a new ge deal with india, and also announce to that g.e. ceo will lead a a new white house council. while president obama's first term is just halfway over, there are some signs he is already getting a jump on running for re-election. the white house has made no secret of the fact that the president planning to run for a second term. early possibilities for republican opponents are mitt romney, sarah palin, and tim pawlenty. there's also a new poll out that shows an overwhelming majority of americans like president obama, but they think he's not done enough to boost the economy or change the way washington works. to the new associated press poll found that 83% of

americans say the president is likable, but 53% don't like the way he has handled the economy. 34% say the president has not lived up to his promise of change. the concorde family is suing former governor arnold wares anythinger for what they say is a -- schwarzenegger for what they say is political corruption. during his last days in office, he reduced the sentence to estaban nunez. the parents of the victim say they were never notified, and filed a lawsuit yesterday saying it is a violation of the victim bill of rights written into the state suggestion. >> this was so outrageous, and it was just blatant, i think, political corruption. >> hopefully this will give

good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. >> it is friday, january 21st. we're going to start the second hour with a very emotional scene happening right now in vallejo. a body was found inside of a car in a parking lot. in just the past half hour craig talked to family members. he is back with the latest. >> reporter: they are very emotional over what happened. i did talk to somebody is who works at the grocery outlet here, and they tell me that basically they saw a couple of people pull up in a black sedan or suv, one of the individuals got out of the suv, foes up to the car where the victim was sitting. in the meantime, people in the car go park in that post office parking lot over there. and then somebody hears five or six shots ring out, and the

minutes from now. >> second graders having sex in an oakland classroom. we were first to break the story last night on our news at 5:00. students are now aleaving at the school this morning. tara joins us with more on how the kids seem to be handleling all of this. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of these students have bewildered looks on their faces. and you have to remember a lot of these kids are very young, and may not even know what happened here at marcum elementary school last week. perhaps to it is all of the news vans and reporters lining the street here in front of the school. many of these parents are angry. they are armed with plenty of questions. many are demanding a thorough investigation, and those we have talked to say they were. horrified to read notices from the principal yesterday afternoon. initial findings confirm two second graders had oral sex inside the classroom last week. there was also another incident in the same classroom last week

to get to school. we posted the letter sent home to parents on our channel 2 website, to read it, go to ktvu.com and click on the bay area news tab. police in oakland have issued a community alert for people living in working in the lake merit area. investigators say a woman was robbed and sexually assaulted in a residential neighborhood off lake shore avenue on tuesday. police are now trying to determine whether the crime is connected to two other sexual assaults in the same area late last year. however, police are not revealing exactly where this latest attack took place. one person we spoke to this morning feels police should not hold back that information. >> i think it would make people more aware, and so we would pay closer attention, as well as make sure that we're kind of walking together, walking in groups and ready to do what we need to do to be protected. >> police are advising people to try to stay in well-lit areas and be especially careful when getting in and out of

their cars. well, right now as we speak at 8:33, wounded congresswoman gabrielle giffords is on the move. her ambulance is moving from the hospital in tucson to a rehab center in houston, texas, and we were flying over it. now, you're looking at a live picture from tucson, arizona, but a couple of minutes ago, we were watching as the ambulance left the hospital with her, and it was fascinating to watch, because the streets were lined with people cheering and applauding on the side, as the ambulance road by. on its way to make that trip to houston, texas. >> she has made such an amazing recovery. she even took a little field trip outside in her wheelchair for the first time yesterday, and she got to go outside and beat fresh air, and this looks like the plans right there that is taking her to the airplane where she will be flown. she will have her husband with her, obviously, on the plane, her mother and trauma surgeon,

and is a couple of congressional aids as well. >> and there are vol is untears who have -- volunteers who have offered to product and escort her. a group of veterans of foreign wars are on their motorcycles, providing a motorcade, to ex- court her to the air force plane there. >> and the facility she is going to in houston, it's actually the largest research program on recovery from to traumatic brain injury in the world. so that's one of the reasons that to they're moving her there. also, her husband, astronaut mark kelly works there, and so he may be able to do some work and be with her there in the hospital. she has really made some tremendous advances, but doctors warn she still has a long road ahead of her, and many with her injurinot recover 100%. she has been. able to stand with help.

we have an update on developing news in vallejo. a man's body was found inside a car this morning, and in the past half hour, craig talked with the victim's boss, and craig joins us live now. what did the boss have to say? >> reporter: good morning. the boss said that this young man had joined him about six months ago, and was an apprentice carpenter, and he was an extraordinary young man. and police say this is a guy who used to be a gang member, but had turned his life around. they have not identified him yet, but he was evidently very popular with family and
