object. they are just calling it an object right now. they're not calling it a car. but they found this object here in the mendota canal. it is very dark, it's going to be difficult to see. but i can tell you on both sides of the canal are two large tow trucks. and between those tow trucks dipping into the canal they have strung a cable and that cable is snagged on that object. with that cable in place here is what the sheriff's department plans to do. >> the goal is to get the cable to the objects and secure that cable to the object. once that is done, a diver can go down into the water using that cable as a guide and go down and try to identify with that object is. that's what we are in the process of doing now. >> if search is connected to the abduction of 4-year-old juliani cardenas. officials say he was snatched

from his grandmother's arms by jose rodriguez. a man says he saw a car matching rodriguez car going into the creek 45 minutes after cardenas was abducted. sonar found that fourth object at about 4:45. it is unclear whether or not the dive team will shimmy down that cable into the water to hook on to that object if they determine that object is something they want to pull from the canal. it is worth keeping in mind that the sheriff said today that absent any other leads, he considers the search of this canal their top priority. in stanislaus county, ken pritchett. it was a story we broke yesterday. tonight ktvu has gotten its hands on paper work from

several different sources alleging incidents of groping at other oakland schools. the story we broke centers around markum school. that's where officials say two second graders engaged in oral sex in class. and in a separate incident, two students took off their clothes in the same classroom. officials tell us they are investigating what happened, who was involved and what role if any the teacher played. >> if the report is true how could such an agregious lack of supervision occurred. >> district officials say the teacher remains in administrative leave. the school plans a conference for students and parents on

good touching and bad touching. and investigators released the first of the series of investigative reports on the san bruno pipeline explosion. it does not provide any analysis or conclusions but instead lists the make up of the pipes and the damage done to it by the explosion and fire. it was prepared for three days of fact finding hearings in march in washington, d.c. pg & e issued a statement calling the report an important step in finding out what caused that explosion. bay area congresswoman jackie spears issued a statement that said quote, the loss of life might have been prevented if pg & e has properly identified the risks that it had underground in the glen view neighborhood. the utility will have to answer for eight deaths, the suffering of burned victims and 38 destroyed homes. if you want to read the full ntsb report just go to ktvu.com and click on the san

bruno fire tab. you saw federal investigators swarm an east bay university earlier this week right here on ktvu. tonight new documents reveal the school wasn't in the business of teaching. ktvu rob roth poured owl those documents, so rob what were they doing at the school. >> reporter: in those legal documents, officials call tri city a sham that allowed people from other countries to receive student visas illegally. agents from immigration and customs enforcement walking out of this small university with computers and other potential evidence. and we showed i.c.e. agents raiding this home, a home owned by the head of the university susan su. authorities would only say that the raids were part of a legal investigation. federal prosecutors claim su made millions of the dollars in

a scheme to fraud the u.s. government. quote i.c.e.s investigation found that tri-valley is a sham university to provide visas. the university listed the same address in sunny vale for numerous students none of which live there. according to their website, tri- valley is a christian university. our phone calls to susan su have gone unanswered. sue has not been charged criminally but the federal government is looking to seize at least four properties they claim she purchased with the tuition money. reporting live from the newsroom, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. friends say a man shot to death in vallejo this morning was trying to turn his life

around. the victim was identified as 23- year-old enrique alejandro jimenez. his body was found in his car. he was waiting to car pool to a carpentry job. jimenez was putting past trouble with the law behind him. police are also trying to figure out who shot and killed a father right in front of his young daughter. terrance tompkins was shot in a peer. his daughter was playing near by, she was not hurt. no one has been arrested. women all in their 70s came home to find a man burglarizing their house. one of the women was able to escape, the two others barricaded themselves in a room until the man took off. an east bay father sat down with channel 2 today to describe what he had to do to

rescue his 4-year-old son from three pit bulls. little miguel is recovering from the attack which happened three days ago. my miguel's father says his son was playing outside and used planters to jump over the fence to recover a ball. the father said he had to beat the dogs with a two by four to rescue his son. the dog's owners points out that the dogs were in his backyard and told channel 2 he wants to get those dogs back. a widespread prostitution ring busted and shut down. the operation is part of alameda county heat watch program which is cracking down on human exploitation and trafficking. paul chambers is live tonight in hayward outside one of those alleged brothels. >> reporter: frank this is one of those homes where the

alleged sex ring was taking place. let me show you how police entered. they used a battering ram. that one yearlong investigation started right here in hayward. >> this all came about based on patrol officer doing an outstanding job of policing in her community. >> reporter: this building is just one of several bay area residents that was raided yesterday. the alameda county sheriff's office says that this home was being used as a brothel. >> that's surprising to me because i hasn't heard anything and this neighborhood is pretty quiet and it's a lot of residences and newer younger businesses. >> these are hard to identify. because the facade looks like a home but in it a lot more the is going on. >> reporter: this shows the city where 125 law enforcement

officers simultaneously served search and arrests warrants. officers were able to arrest eight people for their role in the operation along with women from taiwan and china who police believe were prostitutes. >> in this instance, 10 women were identified and all but one were taken into custody. >> reporter: those kinds of things left unchecked, those kind of things if you aren't able to get underneath them and put a stop to them can often lead to crimes of violence, things that degrade a neighborhood. >> reporter: now this is an ongoing investigation. officers are still checking out a few other cities. on a side note, district attorney in alameda county and former secretary of state rice will be addressing this issue in a conference in 20 minutes. a federal judge this morning ruled that a number of formal probaseball players can

testify in barry bonds' perjury trial. bonds' attorney down played the significant of the other baseball players saying they are not the ones on trial. >> this trial is about barry bonds. at least what i heard up there was that the evidence which the government wants to use about barry bonds will continue to be impossible for them to come up. >> the judge continued to include some of the evidence against bonds because his former trainer greg anderson refuses to testify and corroborate the evidence. job losses in construction and government pushed california's unemployment rate slightly higher last month. it is now up 1/10 of a percent since november. most bay area counties remain higher than 12%. san stpraeupbs cois at 9.2%.

marin county continues to have the lowest unemployment rate at 9.2%. a group of california mayors says the ready to take the governor to court. to block one of the ways he wants to balance the state budget. governor brown has proposed eliminating local redevelopment agencies in an effort to free up almost $2 billion for other uses. mayors and city council members gathered in sacramento today. they says that an illegal grab of money that belongs to cities. a brown spokesman says the move is perfectly legal. threats against governor brown have been found in southern california, graffiti targeting the governor was spray painted on walls in santa ana. they were found yesterday. one was a threat to kill the governor on february 14th. there was also a swastika.

there have been a series of graffiti and slurs found. we have some breaking news now new information on the search for that 4-year-old boy going on in a canal in patterson. these are live pictures, what we told you earlier at the top of the newscast is that authorities there had found another object that they are trying to figure out what it is. a diver has gone down to hook into that object which we believe is some type of vehicle. they are trying to pull it out. apparently either the cable broke or it came unattached so they are trying again. one of the problems here is that as you can see it's getting dark and foggy. the conditions not real good at the moment. but we do believe that at least they are going to try to bring that vehicle out at some point tonight. we have a reporter there, ken pritchett monitoring the situation. if something happens during the course of this newscast we will bring it to you as it happens. also we will have coverage on our 7:00 newscast on channel

36. and of course full coverage at 10:00. arizona congresswoman giffords is spending her first night in a houston hospital less than two weeks after being shot point-blank in the head. well wishers cheered her ambulance as it left the university of arizona medical center. doctors and a nurse who accompanied giffords said it was an emotional journey. >> there were several times we could hear applause in the ambulance with gabby and she responded very well to that. smiling and in fact, even tearing a little bit. it was very emotional and very special. >> doctors said giffords began rehab today in the hospital intensive care unit and will likely enter the rehab facility itself next week. her stay is expected to last for several months. the death penalty in the united states hitting a new roadblock. why the only american manufacturer of one of the three lethal injection drugs says it's not going to make it anymore. also -- >> the tunnel project reaches a

not be used in executions. aspiro says it cannot make that guarantee. the need for the drug has halted executions all across the country including here in california. tomorrow marks one year since construction began on one of the bay area's most anticipated expansions. >> reporter: every morning the eastbound trip to the single commute tunnel is slow. today even slower by the occasional fender bender. all the reason to get the project done sooner than later. the excavation that began last august has already penetrated 800 feet into the mountain, about 1/3 of the way with about a half mile to go. >> started slowly but as you tunnel you get better and better at it. you know what to expect and it's gone a lot more smoothly as we've gone along.

so we're making good progress retsz. >> reporter: though the excavating machine uses brute force the work must be done very carefully. that's because the fossils raise a modern day explosion hazard. >> this tunnel is classified as gassy. meaning that there's hydrocarbons in there that we can run into while we're drilling. so the carbons can be released. sparks could ignite them so we must have before careful when we go into this tunnel. >> reporter: a year into the over all project, another major phase is about to begin. >> next month we're going to start at the west portalful smaller machine, they're only going to go about 1/3 of the way from the west side. >> reporter: then it'll take only another year to breakthrough to begin the finish work. the first traffic will start rolling through here in just 2.5 years and you're paying for it. i'm consumer editor tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. on to our weather now.

a beautiful day here. our chief meteorologist bill martin is off tonight. we go to mark tamayo, what is it looking like. >> reporter: we do have mostly clear skies late tonight into your saturday morning. and also into sunday morning patchy morning fog will be out there with mostly sunny skies into the afternoon hours. the extended forecast still that dry weather pattern. first thing tomorrow morning. we see the fog really concentrated up in the north bay valley and the inland valleys. patchy fog but it could be dense out there. santa rosa forecast low of 38. san francisco 47. we'll be watching the fog at least first thing saturday morning. but high pressure still in command of our weather pushing the storm track way into our north and as a result no rain drops, just a few high clouds could occasionally drift over head as we head into tomorrow

morning. wavers have been building, and as a result swells coming out of the west northwest. waves will be cresting at 15 to 20 feet. here is a look at our cloud and rainfall model. all the rainfall way to our north. in the the afternoon mostly sunny skies and that is all reflected in your forecast beginning tomorrow morning at 7:00. upper 40s, santa rosa 57. hayward mid-60s at 65. san jose 66 and morgan hilltops out right around 67 degrees -- morgan hill tops out right around 67 degrees. first thing sunday morning temperatures cool just slightly. these are all just microscopic changes that you can't see into tuesday and wednesday. but still partly sunny skies also as we do head into midweek

with heather and frank, we'll have to keep an eye on that fog tomorrow morning. >> thanks, mark. after eight months of repairs and renovations, the berkeley east bay humane society reopened part of its shelter today. it was hit by a fire last may that killed 15 cats and badly damaged that facility. the humane society was able to move back into 1/5 of its facility and today reopened their adoption facility. >> this is a place we want to welcome back to come adopt cats and in a few weeks we hope to get more dogs. >> reporter: plans call for a new sprinkler system to contain any future fires. investigators have still not determined the cause of last may's fire.
