good morning, everyone. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. welcome to our very first mornings on 2 weekend edition. from here on out we are going to be on every saturday and sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and today is saturday, january 22nd and let's get right at it with a check on weather with our newest member of the ktvu team, meteorologist and northern california native, rosy chu -- rosemary orosco. >> we have got a little bit of patchy fog out there in the north and east bay this morning. our afternoon highs will be above average once again anywhere from a low to mid, even upper 60s in the forecast for the afternoon. if you're going to take this saturday, this sunny saturday to be out by the coast, we do have a high surf advisory to talk about. we will show you where and talk about what's happening outside your door this morning coming up. we have developing news in vallejo this morning. right now officers are on the scene of a homicide. it happened just about two hours ago at 5:00 a.m. at donegal drive and dublin

drive in vallejo. we are told there is a search going on right now for suare wo video from that scene. we have also been making calls to investigators this morning. we will bring you new information as soon as we get it. the desperate search for a 4-year-old kidnapped victim resumes in about one hour. ktvu's allie rasmus joins us live now from patterson to tell us what search teams will do today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. today the plan is to lower the water level in that canal and actually stop the flow of the water for about 30 minutes so that search crews can continue their efforts. now, we can't show you the canal where we are right now because you take a look around, you can see it is very foggy out here so let's show you the video of what search crews have been working on all this week. so far they have pulled four cars out of the delta mendota canal. none of those vehicles are connected to the case of 4-year-

old jilani car deny cardenas. a witness told police this week he saw a silver car drive into the canal which is why investigators have focused their search there since then. now, you're also looking at some cell phone video we have. this is obtained by ktvu earlier this week of 4-year-old gilani before he went missing. the man 16 with him in this -- seen with him in thinks picture is accused of taking him from his grandmother's arms. 27-year-old jose rodriguez is the ex-boyfriend of gilani's mother. and the grandmother believes rodriguez and her grandson are still alive and offered this plea. >> i want to say that i forgive him. please bring my grandson and if he is afraid, he can leave him in a safe place and he can call and run and hide or whatever. >> reporter: now, this is video

of sonar equipment search crews have been using to search the murky canal waters. they are going to be using that equipment again today. back out here live as we mentioned, it is very foggy out here but just in the last five minutes or so we have seen several sheriff's vehicles driving down this road. they are making their way towards the canal and as we mentioned, the search is going to start around 8:00 this morning. live, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> four cars have been pulled out of that canal. you may be surprised to see that many cars pulled out of one canal but the sheriff's department says those waters are frequently used for illegal dumping. back in 1998, authorities drained a 50-mile stretch of the canal and pulled out 150 vehicles. some were stolen, others pushed in by owners looking to collect insurance money. we are going to have live updates from patterson during the next two hours and you can always get updates on the search for juliani cardenas by

going to our website at ktvu.com. about 20 people evacuated after a car crash caused a gas leak. san jose police say a driver hit a natural gas main near 2nd and humboldt streets before 3:00 this morning. the collision damaged be the gas main and caused a leak. the driver then ran away from the scene. pg&e crews are digging right now to repair the broken main. several streets in that area are closed. no one was hurt. and in just about 90 minutes, city and community leaders will meet for san jose's annual gang prevention task force summit. mayor chuck reed is call on everyone in the city to help tackle the gang violence in the bay area's largest city three weeks into this year and san jose has had seven homicides, at least three of those killings are believed to be gang related and san jose police say that includes the city's latest homicide. investigators say a young man was shot outside a restaurant near capitol expressway and story road last night. officers searched the

neighborhood knocking on doors, looking for the gunmen. they say they did not locate the suspect. police also say it's still not clear what led up to the deadly gun fire. >> there was a struggle, possibly a chase and then multiple shots fired. whether there was one or two suspects we are not clear at this point because we are getting conflicting reports from the witnesses. >> the deadly shooting was san jose's seventh homicide of the year. police say it is possible the killing is linked to a drive-by shooting a few blocks away that took place earlier in the week. this morning santa rosa police looking for two armed robbers who held up two young men outside a mcdonald's restaurant. it happened late yesterday afternoon on mendocino avenue. the gunmen stole their wallets and even the luggage inside the trunk of one victim's car. at this point police only have a vague description of the two armed robbers and anyone with any information is asked to call the santa rosa police department. you can see the number there on your screen. pg&e has now restored power to everyone left in the dark in an overnight power outage in alameda county. the lights went out shortly

after midnight and at one point some 5000 homes and businesses in san leandro, san lorenzo and parts of hayward were without electricity but they were able to restore power to everyone around 1:30 this morning. the utility traced that problem to a faulty piece of underground equipment. the cable network msnbc has abruptly parted ways with its most popular host. last anaheim keith olbermann told his viewers he has taped his final countdown show and is leaving the network. he did not offer any explanation. msnbc only stated the decision to end his contract had nothing to do with comcast's acquisition nbc universal this week. olbermann's combative liberal opinions made him a target of critics and often battled with his own bosses at msnbc. today arizona congresswomen gibb giff starts her -- gabrielle giffords starts her new rounds of rehabilitation. he was shot two weeks ago.

the new hospital's chief medical officer says she has great potential for recuperation. they expect she will be in therapy for months but doctors do warn that she may never completely recover her ability to walk or talk. that cruise ship that left passengers stranded out at sea last year is on its way to the bay area. the carnival splendor left san diego yesterday after several delays. we did talk to maritime officials this morning and they told us it is now expected to arrive in san francisco tomorrow morning where it's going to be repaired. the ship was damaged when its engine room caught on fire during a cruise in november. 4500 passengers were stuck without electricity, hot water or working toilets for three days. the ship should be ready for its next cruise on february 20th. well, you may want to use caution if you're planning to visit the beach this weekend. a high surf advisory is in effect along the coast right now and it's going to last all the way up to 3:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. the national weather service says waves can get up to 20 feet high. the large swells are fueled by

a storm system in the northeastern pacific. however, the surf is not high enough at maverick. the waves have been downbe right puny at that beach near half moon bay in recent days and if that trend keeps up the annual surfing contest would be washed out this year. the window for the super bowl of surfing remains open until the end of february, but if the big waves don't come in before then, maverick's would be cancelled for the third time in five years. good morning to you. a beautiful shot here overlooking the bay, 7:00 oh 91 your -- 7:09 your time. take a look at that sunshine we are expecting for today. you may notice a few high clouds spilling over later today. we will explain what that's about. back to this high surf advisory as we just mentioned a moment ago, lasting until the early morning hours of sunday, breaking waves 15 to 20 feet with very large, long swells expected up along the coast.

high surf, rough surf and water levels will be higher than usual. so if you're using this winter break that we are getting with the sunny skies, mild conditions to head to the coast, just be prepared for that. satellite view for you here, we are starting out with mostly clear skies but there it is, we have got a weak wave that will pass through today moving from north to south and as it does it's going to send a few high clouds our way. for most of us that will be about it. you can see areas around eureka and regulated in -- redding in north california beginning to see some of this as it slides its way closer to us. in the way of winds, it will actually increase those winds in some areas right along the north bay mountains. i'm going to run you through this morning where our winds not bad at all. we are looking at anywhere from 10 miles per hour or less and as we roll through the day, doesn't change very much until about 6:00 or so. now, most of us still with very light winds but take a look at santa rosa, reporting 14 miles per hour and as we roll through the evening hours it increases

to 20 and 21 miles per hour around santa rosa and napa. the north bay and mountains definitely going to be the possibility of gusty winds for the second half of the afternoon into the evening hours. temperatures this morning, not bad at all. the cool spot, napa, 39, santa rosa, 37, the rest of us in the 40s. 46 in oakland right now, 48 for san francisco, maybe getting out for coffee and doughnuts, light jacket will do you good, the sun on its way and we are looking nice. 8:00 we will be anywhere upper 30s into the upper 40s depending on where we are at. by noontime feeling pretty good, mid-50s to 60 degrees and for the afternoon, widespread 1keuz in the forecast -- 60s in the forecast. sunny and mild for your afternoon. let's pinpoint some of these areas for you. how about the napa for the afternoon? 65 expected for today, 63 in vallejo, mid-60s for oakland, 64 in san francisco. we've got your extended five- day forecast coming up in a little bit. back to you.

the funeral service is getting underway at the catholic church near washington, d.c. that shriver attended until his death on tuesday. first lady michelle obama, vice president joe biden and former president bill clinton are expected to attend. last night hundreds of people turned out to pay their respects at holy trinity church in washington, d.c. shriver was the brother-in-law of president john kennedy and the father of california's former first lady, maria shriver. >> and i think all of us take great comfort knowing that mommy and daddy are together now in heaven with god. those were the two great loves of his life. >> 1972 presidential candidate and south dakota senator george mcgovernor also spoke about the man he cheese as his running -- chose as his running mate. he called him the most cheerful, optimistic person he knew in public life. later today she will be buried

at hyannis massachusetts cemetery next to his wife. the california base tea party express is taking a new approach in the fight against health care reform. as jim vargas tells us, it plans to release a new ad campaign to pressure the u.s. senate into repealing health care reform after the house already took that step. >> the tea party express is trying to tell people what activists call obama care will be a total failure. >> obama's plan is 2000 pages of the government grabbing power, squeezing employers and burdening doctors. >> reporter: a tv spot hasn't aired yet. ryan guild who speaks for the tea party express and the campaign to defeat barack obama says the plan is to put it on national news shows. >> it's a ton of bureaucracy we can't afford instead of letting the people find the system that works best for them. >> reporter: they are trying to -- the california nurses association is against repeal and thinks the plan needs to

cover more people. >> if anything that law needs to be substantially expanded and improved which we could do, for example, by expanding our opening medicare to cover everyone. >> reporter: this fight is coming at a time the cna says when only 52% of californians have employer paid health insurance. if 1987 that figure was -- in 1987 that figure was 65%. they say repealing the law will continue to line insurance companies' pockets. >> you couldn't have a more bureaucratic system than the one we have now with these giant health care corporations that have shown over and over and over again that they could care less for the people. >> reporter: the odds are against repeal but tea partiers are betting that keeping the issue alive will help defeat the president's reelection bid. jim vargas, ktvu channel news. hawaii's democratic governor is formally ending his effort to end the controversy over president obama's place of

birth. the state attorney informed him it clearly violates law to release documents such as birth certificates. last month the governor launched any efforts to -- the so-called birthers and others questioned whether the president was really born in hawaii on august 4th, 1961. former new york city mayor rudy giuliani says he is more likely to run for president if sarah palin gets into the race. he says running against her would clearly show him as a moderate alternative to the more conservative alaskans governor. giuliani dropped out of the race after a poor early showing in the primaries. post stark is -- pete stark is back in the bay area this morning. he is holding a town town hall meeting at two locations today. it is a chance for people to ask questions about national issues such as health care, jobs and the agenda for the new

congress. the first meeting in fremont in under two hours. it goes from 9:00 to 10:30 at the fremont senior center. that's going to be followed by a meeting in san leandro at 11:00 at city hall and that meeting wraps up at 12:30. several hercules residents want to recall two members of the city council. they are meeting at city hall at 11:00 this morning to train volunteers who want to help with the recall efforts. they need to gather the sits of 2500 registered voters to put the recall measure on the june ballot. the group is targeting vice mayor joanne ward and councilman donald kyeune. they say former mayor ed valeko was involved but he's already resigned. following overnight news from afghanistan. u.s. military sources say three suicide attackers detonated explosive vests during an attack on afghan and coalition forces. there are reports of at least 10 people killed including one civilian. the pentagon says the attack took place early this morning

in eastern afghanistan. a top official for the iranian government is expressing his support for north korea's controversial nuclear project. that is so long as they are restricted to energy projects. the iranian official says the country has no problem with north korea using nuclear technology as long as it is for peaceful purposes both north korea and iran are accused of using energy projects to hide the development of nuclear weapons and both countries are under intense international pressure to give up those nuclear programs. time now, 7:20. and coming up, the problem behind the new recall of assault -- of saab. the object that fell straight out of the sky and onto a woman's car. and little change expected for today. how long we expect this dry trend to last. we have your five-day forecast coming up. ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00, straightforward coverage

crews have been using heavy machinery to dig through the mountain from the aarenda side. so far they are eight hub feet in with about a mile and a half to go. caltrans says they must work very carefully because of gases in the mountains that can spark a possible explosion. >> there's hydrocarbons in there that we can run into when we are drilling, so the hydrocarbons could be released, spark could ignite them so we must be careful when we go in this tunnel. >> next month ktvu will start -- caltrans will start digging from the oakland side of the mountain. 2 1/2 years before the project is completed. an earthquake shook sonoma county this morning. it's one of six in the past 24 hours and this latest one happened before 1:00 a.m. the magnitude 2.7 quake hit an area near the geysers, 12 miles east of cloverdale, no damage reported and quakes are common in the area. in the past seven days, 32 earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or

larger have occurred there. saab is recalling thousands of cars for a problem with their fuel pumps. the recall affects 4400 the saab 93 from the 2010 and 2011 model years. the 2010 cars were manufactured between june and october of last year while the 2011 cars were built between june and december of last year. saab says the fuel pump could seize up which would stop the flow of fuel to the engine and could cause the car to stall. owners of the affected vehicles are expected to be notified next month. u.s. airways is making sure travelers can find its flight information on the biggest online travel website. it has just signed an extension of its current contract with expedia. the deal comes after expedia recently -- u.s. airways' new contract makes it possible for passengers to pick a window or aisle seat while on expedia. now, right now they have to go to the airlines' actually website because u.s. airways charges an extra fee for those

prime time seats. a southern california woman who says a huge chunk of ice fell from the sky says she doesn't think quote god was throwing ice cubes. she says she heard what sounded like two cars crashing, but it turned out to be a huge block of ice that hit her parked car. you can see the damage there. she thinks that ice fell from a plane flying to or from nearby los angeles international airport. >> it's not the first time in 1984 our back yard a piece of iceland and -- ice landed and it wasn't a big piece. >> the faa is trying to figure out what airline may have been involved so she can file a claim for the $2000 in damage. right now we want to give you a look outside on some of those roadways. here is a live picture at eastbound internet 80 at king vail, obviously no chain requirements, smooth sailing for you folks who want to go up to the mountains for skiing or snow boarding. let's take a look at the incline to the bay bridge.

and in just about 30 minutes, crews are scheduled to return and start searching a canal in patterson where they are looking for that missing boy. the tape of that has led them back there for the fourth day in a row. i'm mike mibach. today is saturday, january 22nd. >> i'm claudine wong. welcome back to the weekend edition of mornings on 2. we are following several developing stories this morning. but we begin with the search for gee lawny -- jewel

iranian jill johnny -- juliani cardenas. >> reporter: if you look at the surface of the water, you can see the movement but this water is actually moving at a rate much faster than what it appears. it's moving at 4 feet per second, that's according to one of the commanders out here. it's very fast moving waters and the plan for today is to stop the flow of the water completely to bring it to a stand still in order to facilitate the search for 4- year-old juliani cardenas. mike harris is with merced county sheriff's department. you guys are assisting with the search. tell us about the process involved in stopping the flow of water out of here. >> bureau of reclamation is going to shut it down. it takes about an hour for the effects to be felt here. about 8:00 we are going to launch a remote underwater vehicle with sonar capability and travel up through the siphon tubes that we couldn't see yesterday because of the flow.

>> reporter: why do you have to stop the water completely to do that? >> the vehicle can't travel against current flow that strong. >> reporter: is it moving aloft fast -- it appears to be moving at the surface? >> we launched a vehicle and even at full thrust it still takes it downstream to we need to shut it down. >> reporter: how long will be you out here doing the work? >> 45 minute window to colete the task. >> reporter: thank you. you're looking at video of 4- year-old juliani cardenas. he went missing earlier this week. the man in this photo with him is jose rodriguez. he is the person accused taking juliani from his grandmother's arms earlier this week and that's what prompted a statewide amber alert. he is ex-boyfriend of juliani's mother and he was last seen driving a silver toyota corolla. a witness told police i saw a car fitting that description drive into the delta mendota canal and that's why investigators have focused their search out here. you can see there are a few search crews and some 14r5eu6rz

vehicles out here -- sheriff's vehicles out here preparing to start their work, stopping the flow of water is going to start at 8:00 this morning. we will bring you more live as that information comes in. reporting live in sanity schrah -- san slaw county. while the 77 page report does not make any hard and fast conclusions about the cause of the blast, it does say there were dozens of fractures in the wells of that pipeline that exploded. meanwhile, the city of san bruno has sent out a letter saying the first construction to replaced demolished homes will begin next month and neighbors say they are looking forward to hearing the sound of construction noise. >> a two story home. >> we are excited, yes. >> and -- >> even -- >> it's right up the street so that's exciting. >> many residents say their neighborhood has been too quiet since that september explosion. they had seen their friends move back in will make it seem

a little more like their lives are returning to normal. jackie spears says she plans to meet with federal investigators to learn more about that report. she has been critical of pg&e's role in the explosion. she released this statement saying if 54 years, pg&e never once inspected the condition of thwells, the loss of life might have been prevented if pg&e had properly identified the risk. amtrak trains are running through contra costa county again this morning after being shut down for more than two hours last night. antioch police were called to the tracks near vierra and wilbur avenues in antioch during the evening commute after someone reported seeing a pipe bomb. the walnut creek bomb squad was called and they used robots to retrieve the object which turned out not to be a bomb but a military flare. officials say that flare could have still hurt someone. >> because it's an older flare, we weren't sure how volatile it was and it does have gun powder and phosphorus in it which does make it dangerous.

>> the bomb squad took the flare away and detonated it at a safer location. today concord police want to look at surveillance video after two suspicious fires at the sun valley mall near closing time last night. fire crews were called after the report of a garbage can fire just before 8:30. but there were two fires, one was on the lower level near the red robin, the other in the ladies room at the johnny rockets restaurant just upstairs. because the timing and the locations are so close together, police suspect arson. the fires were smoldering when crews arrived so it only took a few minutes to put them out. no one was hurt in either fire and the damage was minor. bay area law enforcement agencies say they have broken up a sophisticated prostitution ring that trafficked in women from taiwan and china. the raids took place this week at 10 locations in three bay area counties. authorities made eight arrests and are expected to make even more. one of the homes targeted in the raids was on a well traveled street in oakland. the suspected brothel was right next to a church.

>> women would come in and go out. we would notice that traffic, but it wasn't really obvis. some people mind their own business. we don't live in the kind of community anywhere where we are really like nosey. >> the year long investigation started when a hayward police officer looked into a neighborhood complaint about a suspected brothel at a home. investigators are still sorting out as to what extent the women working at the suspected brothels were trafficked and enslaved. a meeting is scheduled for parents next week in connection with a sex scandal at an elementary school in oakland. we first broke this story earlier this week. the principal at marcum elementary got reports that 22nd grade students engaged in oral sex last week while the teacher was present. two students also allegedly took off some of their clothes in that same class. the teacher of that class is now on administrative leave. we are learning the details of the settlement between the west contra costa county school district and the teenaged girl who was allegedly gang raped at a richmond high school.

the attack happened on october 24th, 2009, outside a homecoming dance. six men have been ordered to stand trial in that case. under the agreement the victim will receive $4 million from the district. 2 1/2 million dollars will be given to her immediately and then she is going to receive the rest in installments paid over the next 40 years. the attorney for phillip garrido plans to ask a judge to postpone her client's mental competency hearing. the attorney says she needs more time to prepare, in part because the prosecution is still sending her material. the sanity hearing for thrill lip greeto is -- phillip garrido is set for september the 28th. garrido and his wife are accused of kidnapping jaycee dugard and holding her captive for 18 years. federal money is now headed to help the homeless in san francisco. the $18.7 million comes from the u.s. department of housing and urban development and will be used to provide permanent

skies and a gorgeous start to the day. doctors in houston say they will not waste any time before starting therapy on wounded arizona congresswomen gabrielle giffords. right now she is under intensive care at texas medical center after her flight from tucson, arizona. reporter mike toben joining us live from houston with the latest. >> reporter: the husband of gabrielle giffords, mark kelly tweeted this morning that they are getting all settled in at this new hospital and ready for rehab. one of the most remarkable stories to come from her transfer came from the people who lined the tucson roads as the ambulance passed by. they shouted and cheered in support. doctors say that congresswomen gabrielle giffords heard them inside of the ambulance and she reacted. >> there was several times we could hear applause in the ambulance with gabby and she responded very well to that, smiling and in fact even tearing a little bit. it was very emotional and very

emergency shelters and now a judge must aapprove a -- aapprove a multimillion-dollar settlement. government tests found travel trailers used at fema emergency shelters during hurricane katrina had a higher level of formaldehyde than mobile homes. the companies that manufacture those homes have now agreed to pay $2.6 million to resolve thousands of claims. the investigation continues into a strange death in the south bay. earlier this week a man was found dead in a san jose home that was being fumigated. authorities have identified that man as 45-year-old julio martinez gonzalez. it is unclear why gonzalez entered that house which was covered with a tent and had signs warning of dangerous fumes. drivers are getting free parking right in front of san francisco's hall of justice. ktvu news has learned it is all due to a dispute over who should be writing out the citations. the sfmta says it is the police department's responsibility, but police say they share that job with the transit agency. police also say ticketing is

not a priority for officers working in and around the hall of justice. some angry drivers are caught in the middle of this dispute. police in denver are getting a lot of extra manpower out on the streets. 1200 cabdrivers are being trained to serve as members of a neighborhood watch on wheels. four of denver's biggest taxi companies have signed on. program coordinators say it is a natural fit since cabs are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and do not follow a set pattern as they move around the city. >> i think that people can feel safer in their communities knowing that you have extra eyes out there helping the police department, you know, solve crimes and keep our crime rate low and keep our streets safe. >> drivers are being trained now to report anything suspicious that they see or hear, but they are not being encouraged to step into a dangerous situation. two union city neighbors can't agree on what should happen to three dogs that attacked a little boy. the boy's father says 4-year-

old miguel went over a fence into his neighbor's yard to get a ball. father says he watched as the dogs, three pitbulls bit miguel over his body. >> one had his head fully in his mouth, the other ones had his legs and they are shaking him. the third one trying to come up. miguel you can see there is recovering from his wounds. the dogs are being quarantined for 10 days but miguel's father says those dogs should not be allowed to return to his neighbor's property when the time is up. the dogs' owner however says the dogs were protecting their yard and says they should be given back to him. the berkeley east bay humane society is open for adoptions again. the organization has been cleaning up and repairing the building where a mysterious fire broke out killing 15 cats and causing serious damage. the work still is not finished and the city of berkeley is only letting them use part of that building. >> we really want to welcome people to come back in and see all the beautiful cats and then in the future we hope to have more and more dogs.

resuming their search from that side of the canal. they are ready to start the search any minute now. i spoke with the stanislaus county schaeffer adam christensen. he said the goal today is to determine whether the vehicle juliani car deny knows was -- cardenas was last seen riding in is in the water. the surface of the water, you can see it moving pretty quickly. it's flowing at a rate of about 4 feet per second. and the sheriff says stopping the flow of water is essential to do this search properly and that is their plan for today. juliani cardenas went missing earlier this week. we have cell phone video ktvu obtained showing the 4-year-old boy before he was object ducted -- abducted. the man he is pictured with is his mother's ex-boyfriend, 27- year-old jose rodriguez is accused of abducting juliani earlier this week. rodriguez and juliani were last seen riding in a silver toyota

corolla. a witness earlier this week told police he saw a vehicle fitting that description drive into this canal and so that's why the search for this missing 4-year-old boy has focused on this body of water. now, again, any minute now, back out here live we can show you the crews out here, there are several law enforcement vehicles, merced county is helping stanislaus county with this search but the plan for today is to lower the water of this canal, stop the flow of water completely and drop in some sonar equipment to resume the search and the stanislaus county sheriff tells me the goal today is to find out whether the silver corolla is inside this canal. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> you may be surprised to see that four cars have been pulled out of that canal but the sheriff's department says those waters are frequently used for illegal dumping. in fact, back in 1998, authorities drained a 50-mile stretch of the canal and pulled out 150 vehicles. some were stolen, others were pushed in by to

collect insurance money. we will continue to update this story during the next hour and you can always get more information on the search for juliani cardenas by going to ktvu.com. we are following developing news in san jose this morning about 20 people have been evacuated after a car crash caused a gas leak. san jose police say a driver hit a natural gas main near 2nd and humboldt streets before 3:00 a.m. he then ran away from the scene. that collision caused damage to the gas main and caused a leak. pg&e crews are digging right now to repair that broken main. several streets in the area are closed but no one was hurt. and just about 30 minutes, city and community leaders will meet for san jose's annual gang prevention task force summit. mayor chuck reed is calling on everyone in the city to help tackle the growing gang violence problem in the bay area's largest city. three weeks into this year and san jose has had seven homicides. at least three killings are believed to be gang related and san jose police say that includes the city's latest

homicide. investigators say a young man was shot outside a restaurant near capitol expressway and story road last night. officers searched the neighborhood knocking on doors looking for the gunman, they say they did not locate the suspect. police say it is also unclear what led up to the deadly gun fire. >> there was a struggle, possibly a chase and then multiple shots fired. whether there was one or two suspects we are not clear at this point because we are getting conflicting reports from the witnesses. >> the shooting was san jose's seventh homicide of the new year. police say it is possible the killing is linked to a drive-by shooting a flew blocks away that took place -- few blocks away that took place earlier in the week. a san francisco man behind wars this -- bars this morning after pleading not guilty to a murder in the fatal shooting of another man inside a coffee shop. it happened earlier this week. investigators say 29-year-old jody daniels chased the victim through the coffee shop then shot him several times in front of horrified customers and employees. investigators still don't have

a motive. pg&e has now restored power to everyone left in the dark in an overnight power outage in alameda county. the lights went out shortly after midnight at one point some 5000 homes and businesses in san leandro, san lauer and parts -- san leandro and hayward were without electricity. but pg&e crews were able to restore power to everyone around 1:30 this morning. the utility traced the problem to a faulty piece of underground equipment. this is a story we first broke here on ktvu on thursday. two second graders allegedly engaged in oral sex in a classroom at marcum elementary school last week. in another incident in that same classroom, two students also took off some of their clothes. the teacher has been placed on administrative leave. this morning concord police are investigating what they think is a case of arson at sun valley mall. someone called 911 to report smoke in a bathroom. when crews arrived, they found

fire smoldering in two bathrooms, one on the upper level and one on the lower level. it took only minutes to put out the fires. because the timing and locations are so close together, police believe the same person may have set them. they hope to look at mall surveillance videos today. no one was hurt and fire damage was minor. antioch police are trying to figure out where an old military flare that triggered a pipe bomb scare came from. robots retrieved the object found near vierra and wilbur avenues. bomb squad members determined it was not a bomb but it was still dangerous because it was made with gun powder. they took it away and detonated it but they would still like to know if there are other flares out there. east bay congressman pete stark is back in the bay area for the weekend to meet with some of his constituents. he is holding town hall meetings at two locations today to give people a chance to ask questions about national issues such as health care, jobs and the agenda for the new

antiviolence group in oakland has pledged to spend their weekends bringing attention to the city's homicide rate. today and every saturday a group called soldiers against violence everywhere will stand on a street corner where someone was killed. this morning the group will stand at 26th and market streets to remember a 21-year- old killed back on january 4th. they will then move to 16th avenue and foothill in honor of a 19-year-old killed in front of a nearby church. problem solving officers are back on the streets of oakland this morning. community policing program was reestablished this week after the city eliminatedsummer becau a department spokeswoman says the city did not hire any new officers but did reassign 57 from within the force. about half of them are former problem solving officers. a judge has ruled that current and former big league

baseball players can be called to testify at barry bonds' upcoming perjury trial. you are looking at video of bonds as he arrived yesterday at the evidence hearing at the federal building in san francisco. the judge ruled players such as former baseball stars jason giambi can be asked about their relationship with bonds and his alleged use of performance enhancing drugs. bonds did not talk to reporters after the hearing but one of his attorneys spoke on his behalf. >> he believes the jury will be just and fair and he'll be judged on the evidence, which is all anyone can want. >> bonds pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of perjury. prosecutors allege bonds lied when he told a grand jury that he never knowingly took steroids. that trial scheduled to begin in march. some drivers are getting free parking right in front of san francisco's hall of justice. ktvu news has learned it is all due to a despite over -- dispute over who should be writing out the citations. the mta says it's the police

search crews are back at a central valley canal right now continuing the search for a 4- year-old boy. welcome back to mornings on 2 weekend edition. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. we are following new developments in a search for a missing boy just within the past hour search teams returned to a canal in patterson. ktvu's allie rasmus is on the scene where she has been talking to investigators. the last two hours. >> reporter: the search crews are getting ready to start

their work any minute from now. if we zoom over to the other side of the delta mendota canal, you can see a group of people standing around what looks like a black box type object. that object is the sonar equipment that they are going to be using. they are going to be dropping that piece of equipment underwater. now, about half an hour ago we watched as some of the crews out here were getting that sonar equipment ready assembling it, putting it together. now, they are going to be getting some help from the state department of water resources. what they need to do, they tell me, is to stop the flow of water in this canal completely. the water needs to come to a complete stand still so that they can drop that piece of sonar equipment in. now, what crews are looking for is a silver toyota corolla. that vehicle is the car that jose esteban rodriguez was last seen driving. he was accused of aducting the little boy. rodriguez is the ex-boyfriend of juliani's mother and after authorities issued a statewide

amber alert, a witness told police that he saw a silver car drive into the delta mendota canal and that's why investigators i focused their search here. >> all the information we have leads us here. we need to be able to rule out with absolute certainty that this car we are looking for, the suspect's car, is not in this canal. >> reporter: now, the canal they are searching, the stretch of canal they are searching is about 2 miles long. they are using that sonar equipment to do it crews have b the past four days. they have been using heavy machinery to tow four cars out of this canal already this week. none of those vehicles already towed are connected to the case but once again we want to show you authorities are preparing to lower their sonar equipment. they are standing around a black box. you can see there's a green cable hanging from it. that black box is going to be going into the canal waters here shortly. it's sonar equipment and that's what they are going to be using to search for that toyota

killings are believed to be gang related and the latest happened just last night. we now have the first in a series of national transportation safety board reports on the san bruno pipeline explosion. while the 77 page report does not make any hard and fast conclusions about the cause of the blast, it does say there were dozens of fractures in the wells of the pipeline that exploded. pg&e says all pipelines in its system that are similar in age and size to the san bruno line are being operated at lower pressures to ensure safety. congresswomen jackie spears says that is a good first step. >> it should give us some solace in knowing that because the pressure has been reduced irrespective of the bad wells and the like, we are somewhat protected right now. >> but the congresswomen says she still plans to meet with federal investigators to learn more about the report and what can be done to improve safety. bay area law enforcement agencies say they have broken

up a sophisticated prostitution ring that trafficked women from taiwan and china. the raids took place this week at 10 locks in three bay area counties. authorities made eight arrests and are expected to make more. one of the homes targeted in the raids was on a well traveled street in oakland. the suspected brothel was right next to a church. >> women would come in and go out. we would notice that traffic, but it wasn't really obvious. some people mind their own business. we don't live in the kind of community anymore where we are really like nosey. >> the year long investigation started when a hayward police officer looked into neighborhood complaints about a suspected brothel at a home. investigators are still sorting out to what extent the women were working at the suspected brothels were trafficked and enslaved. the west contra costa school district will pay $4 million to a teenager who was gang raped at a richmond high school. it happened on october 24th, 2009 outside a homecoming

dance. six men have been ordered to stand trial in this case. in a settlement, the teenager will receive an immediate payment of 2 1/2 million dollars. the rest will be paid in installments over the next 40 years. all of the money is tax-free. the attorney for kidnapped suspect phillip garrido plans to ask a judge to postpone her client's upcoming mental competency hearing. attorney susan goalman says she needs more time to prepare in part because the prosecution is still sending her more information. the sanity hearing for phillip garrido is set for february 28th. a judge is going to consider the request on february 23rd. they are both accused of kidnapping jaycee dugard and holding her captive for 18 years. they say they have purchased a supply of a key drug needed to carry out lethal injections. the state now has a little more than a half of a pound of sodium theo penthal which is one of the three drugs used in lethal injections. that is enough for 100

executions and it won't expire until 2014. two union city neighbors are now arguing over what should happen to three dogs that bit a little boy. 4-year-old miguel, you can see him there, he's still recovering from multiple wounds he got when his father says he went over a fence and into his neighbor's yard to get a ball. the father says he watched as those dogs, three pitbulls, attacked miguel. >> one had his head, you know, fully, in his mouth, other one has his legs and these two are shaking him. the third one is trying to come up. >> the dogs are being quarantined for 10 days but miguel's father says those dogs should not be allowed to return to his neighbor's property when that time is up. the dogs' owner however says they were protecting their yard and he says they should be given back to him. this morning santa cruz police waiting for the autopsy results on a body of a homeless man found at the city's recycling station. the 54-year-old had a history of police contact. the body was found yesterday afternoon in a pile of recyclables that came from a

dumpster. foul play is not suspected. millions of dollars in federal grant money is now headed to help the homeless in san francisco. the 8.7 -- $18.7 million comes from the u.s. department of housing and urban development and is going to be used to provide permanent and transitional housing as well as job training, drug treatment and child care. at last count in january of 2009 there were 6514 homeless in san francisco and there will be another count conducted next thursday. 10s of thousands of antiaabortion supporters are expected in san francisco this morning. it is the seventh annual walk for life west coast to show support for unborn children and their mothers. this year the walk falls on the 38th anniversary of roe versus wade, the supreme court decision which legalized abortion in the united states. there is a rally scheduled at justin herman plaza near the embarcadero for 11:00 this morning, the walk scheduled to begin at noon. about the same time a group will be counter protesting the march at harry bridges plaza in

front of the ferry building. caltrain faces a $30 million budget gap which is 1/3 of its annual spending. now the silicon valley leadership group says rescuing the transit agents is its top priority. caltrain is the only transit agency that does not have a dedicated source of funding. instead, it relies on funding from other agencies. there's going to be another meeting to discuss ways to help save caltrain next saturday in san carlos but nearly everyone agrees caltrain will face major service cuts before the end of the summer. the planned stanchion of bart is run -- extension of bart is running into opposition. they want to add stations in downtown livermore and at vasco road. a group of residents is working to have voters amend the city's general plan so that the extension would be kept out of residential areas forcing it along interstate 580. the contra costa times reports that the group filed notice thursday with the city clerk's office to certify a position to get that change on the ballot. open for adoptions again at least on a part-time basis.

her flight from tucson, arizona. reporter mike toben is live now with the latest on her condition. good morning, mike. >> reporter: good morning, claudine. we got a message this morning from mark kelly, congresswomen giffords' husband, he put up a message on twitter saying they are getting settled into this new hospital and getting ready for lots and lots of rehab. there was some remarkable stories that came out of that transfer from tucson to the houston hospital here today. not the least of which is the fact that supporters of congresswomen giffords lined the roads in tucson and cheered as the ambulance went by. the doctors say she heard that cheering and reacted. >> there was several times we could hear applause in the ambulance with gabby and she responded very well to that, smiling and in fact even tearing a little bit. it was very emotional and very special. >> reporter: now, complication doctors were keeping an eye out for is a buildup of fluid

inside the congresswomen's head. that happened so they installed a drain to relieve that fluid. while that drain is installed inside of her head, they won't move her from intensive care to minimize the risk of infection. doctors also said yesterday that they noticed a weakness or even a paralysis on the right side of her body. that would be consistent with traumatic injuries to the left side of the brain because the left side of the brain controls movement on the right side of the body. still, it is too early to start to make guesses as far as the long-term disability that may be the result of the injury that the congresswomen received. claudine. >> certainly we will be watching her recovery closely. thanks, mike toben reporting for us live. six power nuclear talks with iran have ended without an agreement this morning. the european unions foreign policy chief says it is because of disputes on the focus of future talks. she says iran is making unrealistic fans including the -- demands including the end to u.n. sanctions. iran insists it is enriching only to generate energy.

the two sides have not set a date for a new meeting. 8:48. an american college student convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering her roommate is getting a second hearing of her case. amanda knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison after she was convicted in the case by an italian judge in 2009. independent forensic experts were appointed by an appeals court to review dna evidence from the case. they have until may to decide if that crucial evidence should have been used. the mother of a 15-year-old boy shot at a los angeles high school is planning to sue her son's school district. a law firm representing her says the school failed to conduct random weapon searches each day as its policy calls for. the boy and a 15-year-old girl were shot tuesday at gardena high school when a gun went off as a 17-year-old student reached into his backpack. the boy has been released from the hospital but the teenaged girl is in critical condition. 17-year-old has been charged with bringing a firearm into a school zone and discharging it. he is being held in juvenile

custody until next month when a date will be set to determine if he should be tried as an adult. it appears thousands of victims of hurricane katrina were exposed to potentially dangerous fumes in fema emergency shelters. and now a judge must approve a multimillion-dollar settlement. government tests found travel trailers used at fema emergency shelters during hurricane katrina had a higher level of formaldehyde than other larger mobile homes. the company that manufactures those trailers now agreed to pay $2.6 million to resolve thousands of claims. an elementary school teacher is being accused of taping shut a first grader's mouth. school district officials in san antonio texas say the student's father called the principal after his daughter's classmates alerted to him about the incident. the district placed the teacher on leave as it investigates the allegations. former new york city mayor rudy giuliani says he's more likely to run for president if sarah palin gets into the 2012 race. he says he's running against
