this was a big day for protesters in san francisco but their message was unusual for this liberal city. blue and gold ribbons now lang on trees in support of t he -- hang on trees in support for the search of a missing 4- year-old boy. this as a major search effort is put on old. a police pursuit in the north ends between a car an a -- and a motorcycle.

good evening. >> good evening. i'm ken wayne. heather homes is off tonight. right now, thousands of demonstrators are finishing up a massive protest in san francisco against abortion to mark the 38th anniversary of roe versus wade. the event is called walk for life. john sasaki is in the city with the protesters and has a live report. >> reporter: i will tell you, all of the protesters have taken o ff. the cleaners are cleaning up after that rally. they came to this notoriously i nearl view to -- liberal city to voice their fight. >> it makes sense to be p ro- life, doesn't it? [ cheers ] >> reporter: the protesters rallied in justin herman plaza where things got heated with

abortion right supporters. >> abortion rights! >> reporter: the opponents tried to block the other side's banner and someone took it a step further. >> hey! hey! hey! >> reporter: i tried, unsuccessfully, to interview the man whoer to up the -- who tore up the sign. sir, sir, you violated their first amendment rights, sir. sir, sir -- >> we know that people here are so-called pro-life or a nti- abortion. people ripped our banner, shut us down, took us down. >> reporter: the crowd took its message down the embarcadero. >> you made the choice of g etting pregnant. so why are you gonna punish somebody else for your own m istake? >> i think one of the greatest human rights abuse is right here in the united states, with abortion. >> reporter: abortion right supporters whether vastly o utnumbered but still vocal. >> so this is keep politics out of abortion because this is what women did and still do and

will do again to self-abort. >> reporter: police confirmed to me that this walk for life was the biggest one this city has seen. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 n ews. >> another anti-abortion rally is planned for washington, d.c. on monday. today, president obama issued a statement on this roe versus wade anniversary, saying in part "on this anniversary, i hope that we will recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights, the same freedom and the same opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams." a 9-year-old boy is r ecovering tonight after he was shot in the stomach this afternoon in san francisco. police say it happened at about noon on turk street in the c ity's western edition neighborhood. officers say the child was shot in the lower abdomen. the 9-year-old was taken to san francisco general hospital and is expected to survive. police are not sure why the boy was shot. no arrests have been made. a surfer was seriously injured after he wiped out after the maverick surf shop. fire officials say the man in

his 30s was riding a 15 to 2 5- foot high wave just before 10:00 this morning, when the wave smashed on top of him, he was unresponsive and towed to shore by a jet ski and he was airlifted to stanford medical center. the surfer is in serious condition. a high surf advisory is in effect until 3:00 tomorrow morning. the national weather service is predicting large swells from 15 to 20 feet high. ktvu meteorologist, mark tamayo, will be here in a bit with a look at some of the high spots in the bay area. police are trying to identify a body found on a north bay beach. this cell phone video was taken pipe a ktvu 2 channel 2 reporter from a -- taken by a kight channel 2 reporter from a cliff. the body was only partly clothed and appears to be that of a man. no word on the identity or how

the body came upon the beach. another search effort ends in the statewide amber alert involving a 4-year-old boy. ken pitch let spoke with the boy a -- pritchett spoke with the boy's mother today. ken? >> reporter: this is a new future to juliani's n eighborhood, blue and gold ribbons. blue is his favorite color. the neighbors went up this afternoon at about the same time the search ended with no r esults, an effort the boy's mother says that she's grateful for. >> i'm glad they did that. i really am. i really appreciate that they were out there, you know, all hours of the night in the f reezing cold, getting in the water, you know, trying to see if that was the car. i really appreciate that. >> reporter: the family says 4-

year-old juliani car dean necessary was abducted -- cardenas was abducted on tuesday by jose rodriquez. a statewide amber was issued again with no effort. they used sonar again today to search for the suspect's car in the delta canal about four miles from the home. a witness said he saw a car matching the suspects with a man and child inside drive into the canal 45 minutes after his abduction. but after four stolen cars were pulled out of the water, the sheriff's office said they've searched two miles of the canal and are confident that the car is not in that particular section of water. now, the search of the canal is on hold for 48 hours. the sheriff's department said they will after that likely resume searching that canal beyond that two-mile point. that particular search may be on hold. the search of the canal for 4 hours but the family and friends and neighbors go on.

the houses except for the one hit by the car had gas stored by this midafternoon. police found a woman shot to death in vale. a manhunt is on. police officers found the w oman's body around 5:00 this morning inside a vehicle near dublin drive. after a two-hour search, police caught one suspect riding hiding in a black yard. the ear suspect got away. no word on a motive for the shooting. the santa clara county medical examiner's office released the identity of a man found dead monday inside a home being fumigated. the victim is julio martinez gonzalez. employees of the pest company found the body in the home. medical examiners are waiting for the toxicology report to establish the cause of death. police think he might have gone in -- gone inside because he was homeless. doctors for gabrielle giffords say she's more alert and is progressing nicely.

giffords is undergoing evaluations during her first full day at texas medical center had newspaper -- in houston. she was flown there yesterday. many members of congress are meeting with constituents for the first time since that s hooting. we caught up with east bay congressman pete hall after m eeting at city hall where he was planked by several police officers. he's not worried about his safety. >> my thinking is if -- if somebody is gonna shot me, that's an easy shot. i don't think you can go through life worrying about that. kindergarten through 12th grade teach remembers meeting in san jose for the 60th annual good teaching conference. this event is sponsored by the california teachers association.

san jose today had new urgency after a gang-related death just last night. it's the third in the past m onth. and ktvu's mike mibach learned today about one factor experts say is key to reducing gang violence. >> reporter: taught in san j ose -- >> we change lives. >> reporter: -- a summit looking to cap a pocket of violence. >> inside the event, a lot of different ideas, but the same goal to end gang violence. in 2011 there have already been three gang-violence deaths. last night a man was shot and killed outside a san jose restaurant. seven people have been injured in three weeks. >> we have a lot of kids that are generational gangs members and even in the middle -- gang members and even in the middle school that i work in now, we have a lot of kids that are true and. you wonder why.

say they want more pay. they say they are not to blame for shooting other people. a saudi man died after setting himself on fire in a protest while thousands of people in yemen took to the streets to voice their anger over their government and protesters clashed with police in algeria as well. in turkey today, talks collapsed between iran, the u.s. and five other nations about limiting iran's nuclear program. european union policy chief katherine ashton said iran made unrealistic demands including an end to sanctions and an agreement that would allow iran to enrich uranium. no further talks are scheduled. they say iran is about three years away from the first nuclear bomb. in afghanistan, heavy pressure from afghan lawmakers and western diplomats helped convince ha mid karzai to convene the newly elected parliament. they got together informally to talk together about what to do. mr.karzai wanted to delay the

grave yard in hyannis, massachusetts. le lend yee is introducing a bill to use competitive bidding for all energy-related projects. he says that would lead to more solar projects and green jobs as well as save taxpayer money. he says competitive bidding would open up business to small ircontractors, including business owned by minorities and women. san francisco's great highway is set to be closed to remove shifting sand. the road will be closed between lincoln way and float boulevard. the work starts on monday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and will continue for about a week. crews will remove sand that has shifted to the nearby beach and trimmed vegetation from the medians to help improve visibility. i'm sure there will be a lot of people out there. it was a good day to be out there today. mark tamayo wishes he was out there instead of here. >> it would have been a day out there. you always want to be careful

right near the immediate coastline especially when you have the high surf advisory. i can show you on live stormtracker2, the clouds are moving through the state. we're gonna deploy the buoy reports and come in tighter. the buoy just to the west of texas, -- san francisco, you can see wave heights around 12 feet. when i last whenned a few m inutes -- czeched a few m inutes, it was 13 -- checked a few minutes ago it was 13. record heat across parts of the bay area for today. you can see the 60s and the 70s innd at old records out there for oakland and kentfield and san jose, 71, set back in 1961. santarosa tied a record. look at all of the 60s and 70s showing up. livermore, 69 and fairfield in the lower 70s at 72 degrees. for tonight, i am expecting this with mostly clear skies. windy conditions in the hills. for tomorrow, mostly sunny and mild.

the extended forecast, we will continue to hold on to this dry weather pattern. still a few high clouds moving across the bay area. this one system as this moves through, high pressure reestablishes itself and the winds will be on the increase. the persistent fog bank is to the south. but we could have a few patches develop in the north bay valleys and the east bay valleys overnight and gusty winds for the higher tur rahn. i talked to the -- terrain. i talked to the weather service there's a possibility for a wind advisory in the north bay hills and east bay hills. unlikely but something we should watch. high pressure remains in place. there's the storm track heading to the north and that will give us our dry weather forecast. upper 30s to the upper 40s tomorrow morning. by 12:00, 55 to 60. by 3:00, mostly sunny. temperatures tomorrow are coming down tomorrow a few degrees in the order of around 3 to 6 degrees. but still we're on the warm side for tomorrow as well. sanjose, 67. sanmateo, right around 63 degrees. here is a look ahead.

a san francisco group that helps care for the furry friends of those in need celebrated a milestone today. it was the grand opening celebration for the paws organization which stands for pets are wonderful support. the folks help provide for the needs of companion animals for low-income senior citizens and people with disabled illnesses such as h.i.v. and a.i.d.s. the new facility will have a pet food bank, an on-site dog w ashing station, facilities for nail trimming and volunteers v ets on staff. >> pretty full service. >> that's right. joe is joining us with basketball action. >> it's basketball time. the up-and-down basketball team for the stanford cardinals took
