good morning and welcome to mornings on 2 weekend edition. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. a bit breezy, what is your sunday going to feel like? let's go to meteorologist rosemary. >> we are going to feel a little bit of a cooldown in the afternoon. the air mass comets to cool through the area but as we just mentioned a moment ago very breathe breezy, especially in the hills -- the air mass continues to cool. and we begin this morning with a deadly offer involved shooting, two oakland police officers shot and killed a man overnight outside of a high school dance. at joaquin miller community center. allie rasmus is there to tell

us what happened. >> reporter: behind me the joaquin miller community center, that's where the high school dance was taking place. but it was down the street here, where police pulled over what they described a suspicious vehicle. there were three people inside that car. a woman behind the wheel and two male passengers. one of the passengers got into a fight with the officers and stabbed the officer with a screwdriver. that officer had a bullet-proof vest and was not hurt. all of this happened as a high school dance took place at the near by joaquin miller community center. we don't know which school had the dance but we know it's part of the oakland school district. >> the individual is an adult. so he's not associated with the schools but we routinely have

individuals that try to gain access to our events. so it's important that we provide security. >> reporter: now the female driver of that vehicle was taken to the hospital. we don't know if she is facing any charges. a second passenger is in police custody. meanwhile the two officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave as the oakland school police department conducts an investigation. also the police department will be conducting an investigation. a woman shot by a daily city police officer is in critical condition in the hospital this morning. we brought you this story as developing news last night on the 10:00 news. it started when they attempted a traffic stop on carusol street. the female driver crashed into the home near the cal palace then she backed into the officer with the car. that is when police say the officer shot the woman. police have not released the condition of the officer who

was backed into. the family of a four-year- old abducted in patterson will hit the streets this morning to postfliers and they are asking for volunteers to join them. juliani cardenas was snatched six days ago by his mother's ex- boyfriend. the search is on hold. meantime juliani's family and friends say they are are going to tonight to get the word out. juliani's family have asked that volunteers who want to help postfliers arrive at their home at 10:00 in the morning. we have posted their address online, just go to ktvu.com and

agency that to be getting blame during a fiery blast. the chronicle says a permissive regulatory system allowed for inaccurate reporting by pg & e and other agencies. and said stricter regulations were placed years ago but were not reestablished. rescuers were out searching for lee until 9:30 last night. officials say they have found the body of a man who failed to return from a fishing trip. the body was discovered near by black sands beach. police have not released his name but say he is in his 40s.

national park service rangers say they cannot reach the site by both because of high surf. instead a highway patrol helicopter retrieved the body. jacob tret was paddling out when a wave twice as high as previous waves went on top of him. with that the personal watt -- without a personal water craft near by would have been difficult to rescue him. as the plane began it's climb, an alarm warmed of overheating inside a wheel well. the pilot circled to oakland's airport to make an emergency

sitting in an an alexandria auction house. he says he got the urns from a dealer. the army is investigating. one of the most historic vehicles in national history hit the auction block in arizona. the ambulance that carried president john f. kennedy's body was sold last night. there was a lot of controversy surrounding that office. because there was question whether the ambulance carried kennedy's body. but the buyer says the rumblings don't bother her and believes the company that sold the vehicle did their research. >> you couldn't say no at that price. for that big of a piece of history. it's amazing. >> brown is a car collector, she's not sure what she's going to do with the ambulance, but

to pa palo alto last year. a 15-year-old boy could get millions of the dollars of settlement money. that money would come from the city of san pablo. jasmine davis died and their aunt chamica davis seen right there on the screen was charged for her death. investigators say hugo gutierrez was shot while riding his bike. police believe the teenager they arrested has ties to a local gang. and police arrested a man accused of firing firing a gun into a group of people. the suspect had been involved in a fistfight then he got a gun from his car and began shooting. no one was hit by the gunfire

and police have not released his name. numerous inmates were injured after a fight broke out. security guards say they were eventually able to get the situation under control. the medium security prison had 800 inmates. and police are looking into accusations that one of their sergeants punched a woman on her face. the surveillance camera was rolling as the sergeant punched the woman repeatedly. the woman was arrested on numerous charges including drunk driving, the officer is on paid administrative leave. the government is taking responsibility for the deaths of 200 birds in south dakota. the usda says the birds were purposely poisoned because they

were eating the feed. most of the birds died near the site but some were strong to fly over the dakota border. earlier this month a large scale bird death was reported in arkansas. experts determined those birds died after being startled by new years eve fireworks and flew into buildings and trees. i want you to take a look at this picture. this is gustav. he's a german shepherd found collapsed on someone's front porch. he was in terrible shape and has already undergone two surgeries. what they do know is this is a dog who wants to survive. >> take a look in his eyes and see the fighter spirit that is still there. and we will stand by him as long as he wants to fight. >> reporter: gustov's story has gone viral and has inspired

well wishers and donations from across the country. the clippers took their game to the golden state. griffin not known as a three point shooter but he now has five in the season after this all net effort. golden state loses 114-109. the sharks in town last night hosting minnesota at the tank and ever since ending that two game losing streak, san jose has been skating like a different team. it was 1-1 in the first period. setaguchi turned back once but not a second time. the sharks hang on for a 4-3 win. it is their fourth win in a row. all right time now it's 7:26. if you spent any time outside.

it was a gorgeous day. rosemary is back with us. >> fairly similar, hopefully you have some place to be on this sunday. false or mild start this morning. a little trouble when it comes to the wind. outside of that we have a beautiful sunrise there for you. and pretty good visibility. not a lot of fog in the forecast as we head out this morning. mostly cloudy skies and breezy in the hills. not all of us dealing with this wind, but where it is gusty you are likely to hear it inside your house. over some of those bridges could be quite gusty. fair skies through this evening, as we start tomorrow morning we will start with more of that a.m. patchy fog. five day forecast here, there you have it. 57 expected this afternoon. as we move through the workweek our numbers don't budge very much. we'll be sitting in the mid- upper 50s. i mentioned a little earlier,

an alteration outside a high school dance leads to a deadly officer involved shooting. good morning everyone, i'm mike mibach. welcome back to mornings on 2 weekend edition. the investigation is now under way into a shooting that left a man dead outside a high school dance. that's where ktvu's allie rasmus is standing by with what led up to this shooting. >> you condition see the building where we're standing but just up the road is the joaquin miller community center that's where that dance was going on. and it's down this street that the officer shooting happened. oakland police had closed off part of the road as part of their investigation. police say what happened was

when they tried to pull over what they described as a suspicious car, one of the passengers got in a fight with an officer and stabbed the officer. the officer was wearing a bullet-proof vest and is not harmed. they discovered the car was stolen and that another passenger had a handgun. oakland schools police say they were in the area because they were providing security for that dance just up the hill. >> tonight is a perfect example why we provide security at these events. you had an individual armed with a handgun on the perimeter of the event. >> reporter: now we don't know which high school was hosting the dance at the joaquin miller community center. but we do know the school is part of the oakland school district. however police say the person shot was not a student and was not a minor.

in the meantime, police are conducting an internal investigation. the district attorney's office is also conducting an investigation into this officer involved shooting. live in oakland, allie rasmus. an oakland woman was shot twice in the driveway of her home during what police say appears was a kidnapping or carjacking attempt. it happened this morning, the woman had just pulled up to her house when she was attacked by two armed suspects who are believed to be in their teens. the victim was taken to the hospital but we do not know her condition this morning. so far no arrests have been made. san francisco police are searching for a motive and a suspect in an incident that killed a 9-year-old boy. investigators are trying to figure out whether the boy was targeted or if this was a random shooting. in vallejo, a 23-year-old

man is now accused in the shooting of a woman who's body was found in a car. police are not releasing the victim's name until her family is notified. police say an alert neighbor called police yesterday after noticing an unfamiliar car on dublin drive and two men acting suspiciously. >> as soon as they saw the officers they began to run. four officers got into a foot pursuit with them. >> one of the officers noticed that one of the suspects had bloody clothing on him while he was running. >> versean darion was found hiding in a car. the motive for the shooting is under investigation. the vice mayor of san jose is calling for a -- of the seven homicide in san jose three are being investigated as gang related. last year there were a total of six gang related shootings last

year. the head of the task force said the strategy cannot be about arresting and putting gang members away in jail. >> it's not enough to prevent some kids intervene with some and lock up some. the reality is, that they're going to come back in the community. so we need a reentry strategy. >> tomorrow's community meeting is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. >> alcohol likely played a role in an accident. the accident happened yesterday. the suspect rear ended a toyota tundra with two people inside. the driver of that toyota sustained minor injuries and the 38 suspect died. the suspect may have been involved in two hit and run accidents right before. he is also hurt but his injuries are considered nonthreatening. officers say it all started

when they tried to stop the motorcyclists for speeding. they say he refused so the officers gave chase. >> he was going very fast. about 80 miles per hour. >> the motorcyclists was flown to memorial hospital in santa rosa with serious injuries. the two people in the sedan suffered minor injuries. this morning state treasurer locklear says california may be forced to issue ious as early as april. locklear made the comment yesterday adds the state faces a $25.4 million deficit through the end of june 2012. if the legislature fails to address the budget shortfall, california will not be able to pay its bills. governor brown has proposed $5.5 million in cuts and borrowing. hundreds of teachers will

be mading -- will be meeting in san jose to share their teaching skills. they are discussing programs to help students with disabilities achieve their goals. tomorrow the council will provide a plan to revitalize the city's downtown area. the plan is to revitalize the downtown area with housing. legal rambling has stalled that effort for years. and we have a road closure starting today in oakland to tell you about. caltrans says it is closing the 42nd avenue and high street under interstate 880. the closure is part of the i880

corridor improvement project. the ramps are scheduled to be closed until monday. for now, let's take a live look. things looking smooth there. no snow, no rain here on this sunday morning. you said it, another dry day looking live. fog a little this morning. our relative humidity is down and it's because of the wind that are blowing especially in some areas, very strong. the offshore winds could bring some of this to the east side of contra costa county. meanwhile high pressure rebuilding behind that trough that moved through yesterday bringing very gusty conditions to our east bay hills this morning where the gusts are to 30 miles per hour or so. we will continue with the winds throughout the evening hours before they die down. high pressure again keeping that snow trek to the north.

a little bit of cooling expected in some areas, some of us may not feel any changes from yesterday afternoon. if air mass is going to cool just a tad. we will continue with the gusty conditions through the morning hours. our highs mid-60s. our morning lows this morning, a chilly start in santa rosa once again just above freezing. 35degrees, but mostly clear skies. a little bit of hayes possible as the relative humidity is about 80% there. 52 in san francisco. what a major gap, we're talking 17 degrees. 52 in oakland. so through the 8:00 hour, widespread 40s, approaching the 60 mark. your day is looking pretty good. 63degrees expected in some spots then in through the afternoon. again back into the 60s, 62 will be the low. some of us reached into the 70s yesterday. even making a few new records.

a look across the area for you here. mid-60s in areas. 56 in fremont for today. 64 in concord. if you head north, santa rosa is expected to hit 68. we're going to continue with this warm dry weather. the offshore winds again expected to relax a little later today, and with that we're expecting the fog to return. especially the north as well as the east bay. temperatures in the afternoon will dip just a little by monday but rebound by tuesday. we are not going to see big changes between now and thursday. by thursday mostly cloudy skies and 62 in the afternoon. we will take a look at what we can expect into the end of january and beginning of february in just a little bit. arctic weather has hit new york and people there are being warned to stay indoors. forecasters say temperatures will hit 15 below along the

pennsylvania border by tomorrow. and temperatures could plummet to 20 below near lake ontario. so far 6-inches has fallen in coastal areas north of willmington. time now 7:30 and it's counting on a new talk, maybe the craze is going to hit. it's called couch skiing. this is where know enthusiasts put their skis and boards away and hit the slopes with their couch. >> we've had a few lazy boys and those are really fun. because those are really fast and comfortable. they bounce really well. >> you're going to have to find a snowy hill and you're going to have to be willing to push that couch up the hill.

residents along the coast. a louisiana environment group tested 12 people and found unusually high levels of benzine in about 1/3 of those residents. benzine has been linked to many health problems. including leukemia and irregular menstrual periods. according to the new york times, federal officials are concerned about the slowing pace of new drugs coming out of the pharmaceutical industry. many drug lawmakers are trimming down research so the government is starting a new develop development center -- drug development center. the idea is the hopes of attracting a drug company investment. 50,000 people gathered for an anti abortion rally. the rally in justin hermann plaza marked the 28th anniversary of the decision that legalized abortion. >> we know that people here are

so called pro-life or anti abortion and you know people shut us down, pushed us out. >> you made the choice of getting pregnant so why are you going to punish somebody else for your own mistakes. >> this was the largest march for life rally the city has ever seen. tens of thousands of demonstrators are expected at the annual life for rally in washington, d.c. tomorrow. many anti abortion activists believe the new majority in the house of representatives gives them the best chance in years of overturning roe versus wade. in a statement, the president said i hope that we will recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights, the same freedoms and the same students as our sons to fulfill their dreams. 7:46, the historic library in congress in washington, d.c. is now home to a determined

bird of prey. the coopers hawk has been in this dome, in this library since last wednesday. no one is exactly sure how it got in but they are trying to help it to get out. >> we brought in a woman from the virginia raptor conservancy. we have bait up there. we have a cage and she is endeavoring to rescue the bird. >> in the meantime the hawk has become something of an attraction to library visitors who take time to look up from their books. actress zsa zsa gabor is resting home after she got part of her leg amputated. doctors decided to amputate part of her leg when a persistent infection would not heal. the 93-year-old is being monitored daily at her mansion

in bel-air. doctors say wounded arizona congresswoman giffords now faces the hardest work she will ever have to do. the intensive care university where giffords is now being treated uses high tech tools ha push the brain to rewire itself. giffords doctors say they are surprised about how strong she is especially on her left side. the man accused of shooting giffords and 18 others are scheduled to be back in court tomorrow for what we can expect during loughner's court appearance. let's check in with casey stegall. >> this court hearing starts at 1:30 local time tomorrow. that is 12:30 california town but the federal courthouse actually in phoenix where we are. two big things are going to happen, 23-year-old loughner the accused is scheduled to

enter a plea. we understand that this trial would not start until later this year. loughner has already waived his rights to a trial by jury, so a judge will be deciding the case. tomorrow's hearing will take place in a larger courtroom used for high profile cases and federal law allows prosecutors to seek life in prison for an attempted assassination of a member in congress it'll be up to eric holder to decide on whether the death penalty will in fact, be sought here. meantime he talked on this earlier, but doctors at that rehab facility in texas where congresswoman giffords is being treated still characterizing her recovery as tremendous. they say she is still in the

discovery phase which means they're going to try to assess where she is exactly. in terms of her recovery. the congresswoman still cannot speak because of her tracheastomy breathing tube and she is still in intensive care because of fluid in her brain. she will be moved to the rehabilitation portion of the program sometime late next week. but they are obviously monitoring her very closely they say they are still surprised that she's doing so well despite two weeks and one day ago she was shot in the head. we're live in phoenix this morning, casey stegall. apple is celebrating this morning. >> plus, an increase in sea otter deaths along the california coastline. what scientists say is killing them. it's a great sunday to be

five americans on boards a sailboat that was reported missing have been found by the philippine coast guard. they are all said to be in good health. the coast guard says it appears their catamaran ran into engine trouble. more sea otter are turning up dead near the california coastline. according to the geological survey, three caucuses were recovered last year. that's 11% of the sea otter population. in comparison only 330 sea

otters died in 2008 and 2009. toxic algea and shark attacks are the main killing of otters. is wearing caumaflage appropriate for school. two students were shot last week, both were wearing camouflage colors. although the students will recover, there is concerns that the camo color is growing in popularity with gangs in that area. safety is first pry where -- safety is first priority. so he's ordered students to stop wearing camouflage. chewing gun giant wrigley is the latest to suspend its

ravens the reach the championship. and the jets beat the patriots. the bears will also battle freezing temperatures. the packers arrived in the windy city yesterday. they are coming off a victory over the top seeded atlanta falcons last weekend. the bears defeated the sea hawks to earn their chance to go to the nfc championship. you can watch that packers- bears game right here on ktvu. a minnesota sports bar owner is showing his support for the packers for a very strange way. he is going to cook a bear over hickory and charcoal. he planned to serve the meat to customers but the health department rejected that plan. instead customers can take photos with the roasting bear and the meat is going to be taken to a private party afterward.

after a crash in petaluma. the crash happened at bodega avenue around 1:30 yesterday afternoon. the incident started when an officer tried to stop the motorcycle for speeding on lakeville high school. the 26-year-old motorcyclists refused to stop and officers then gave chase. they say the man reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. the motorcyclists crashed and hit a blue sedan with two people inside. over heating well is to blame -- an alarm warned of the overheating just after 3:00 p.m. yesterday. the pilot of the boeing 737 circled to oakland's airport and made an emergency landing. none of the 93 crews and passengers were injured. the airline flew them on to chicago. 26.5 pounds of opium have been seized after a bust at san

francisco international airport. u.s. customs agents say they first became suspicious a week ago after a shipment of ratan wood furniture came in from thailand. when they x-rayed that furniture they found the opium inside. opium can be refined into heroin, but it's also smoked in its pure form. the cruise ship that left passengers stranded out at sea late last year is expected in san francisco within the next 30 minutes. the splendor left san diego friday. the ship is expected to arrive about 8:30 this morning. it will be repaired here. the ship was damaged when its engine room caught on fire during a cruise back in november. 4,600 passengers were stuck without toilets, food or electricity for three days. take a look at all that

we're following another officer involved shooting in oakland. this one involving school district police. welcome back to mornings on 2 everyone i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. the shooting happened near where a high school dance was taking place. allie rasmus is here to explain why the man tried to attack police. >> reporter: the building where that dance was taking place, was just up the road. but it was on on this road where the car was stopped. police were patrolling the area

because of the dance that was going on. they pulled over what they described as a suspicious vehicle around 9:30 last night. a passenger in the car got in a fight with the officer according to police. and police say the man then stabbed that officer with a screwdriver. the officer wasn't hurt because he was wearing a bullet-proof vest. but the officer did open fire and fatally shot the man in the vehicle. police say after the shooting, they discovered the car they had been driving was stolen, and that the passenger inside that vehicle they pulled over had a handgun. >> tonight is a perfect example why we provide security at these events. you had a man armed with a handgun at the perimeter of the event. >> reporter: the high school is part of the oakland unified school district. but the man who was shot and killed was an adult he was not a student and was not affiliated with the school. the female driver was taken to

carjacking attempt. witnesses tell ktvu the woman had just pulled into her house when she was attacked by two armed suspects. the victim was taken to the hospital but we do not know her condition this morning. so far no arrests have become made. police say alcohol like -- no arrests have been made. police say alcohol likely played a part in a fatal accident last night. a 38-year-old passenger died. police say the suspect may have been involved in two hit and run accidents just before the fatal crash. he was also hurt but his injuries are considered nonlife threatening. it's now been six days since a 4-year-old boy was abducted from patterson. family and friends will be posting fliers around town earlier this morning.

20th. time now 8:45, a salsalito man is behind bars after he trys to hit a parking officer with his car. it happened yesterday afternoon, as the parking officer was about to issue a ticket. the man got so mad that he tried to ram the officer with his car. he didn't hit her, but he did leave the scene. in utah this morning, the state patrol has launched an investigation after one of its own is accused of punching a woman in the face. a dashboard camera was rolling as the sergeant was hitting her. the woman was arrested on numerous charges including drunk driving. the officer is on paid administrative leave. a doctor overseeing

congress giffords says her therapy is progressing nicely. the congresswoman says she was more alert than when she arrived in houston early saturday. now a man charged in the tucson shootings is due in court tomorrow. and fox's casey stegall joining joins us now with what we can expect. >> reporter: arizona's top judge john rowe was killed in the attack. loughner will be in court tomorrow morning. two major things are expected to happen. he will enter a plea and also a trial date will be set. i'll give you background quickly on wednesday a grand jury handed up three

indictments against loughner. now additional charges are expected in the next 60 days in the slayings of judge rowe. loughner has already waved his right to a trial by jury so a judge will rule his fate. meantime as far as congresswoman giffords condition goes she still remains in that intensive care unit at the rehab facility in houston texas because of fluid build up in the brain. congress giffords still cannot speak because of her breathing tube and it's not clear when that breathing tube will be removed. but a physical therapist is working with her on sitting and standing if you can believe that already. a speech pathologist is working with her to improve communication skills. doctors say that her right side is weaker than the other because the left part of the brain controls that side of the
