ow. the explosion happened in the baggage area at the chechen airport. we're on the scene of developing news in san francisco. in the past few minutes, we learned the body discovered inside a burning car was a female. this car fire happened in the city's haight district. tara moriarty is there and joins us now with what investigators are saying. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. we just learned from our sources that the victim, the person t rapped inside of that

burning car was, indeed, a woman. if you take a look behind me, you can see as crews are getting ready to haul that car away, they've wrapped it up, sealed it up and will take it away from -- to the crime lab. authorities decided to move the entire car with the body inside and then take it away, as to not destroy evidence. we're between webster and page and haight. one neighbor shared with us pictures off his cell phone. he says there was quite a spectacle in the street, seeing how there is an el ellenmy t ri -- elementary school nearby. >> i heard a car alarm. >> they realized there was a body in the vehicle after the

flames were put out. at this point, we don't have an age or a gender on the victim as the victim's body was severely damaged in this fire. >> reporter: now, we saw police and fire investigators combing the stairwells and bushes with flashlights. we're not sure what they were looking for. workers from the department of health that were here earlier on scene, told us they were here to assist. again, webster is blocked off from paige to haight. i'm not sure how long it will be closed this morning. you can see that there is a cop car there at the top of the hill. there is also one at the bottom. so you definitely cannot get through. we'll let i know when the street reopens. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. oakland police are searching for suspects after a 60-year-old man was assaulted and killed. police found the man on center street just before 11:00 last

night. he later died at the hospital. investigators say he was suffering from wounds caused by assault with a deadly weapon. we just spoke to police but they are not releasing details about the type of weapon released. the man attacked -- we spoke to the mother of the man suspected of abducting a 4-year- old child. >> reporter: good morning. within the last little while, her gut tells her that her and her grandson are still alive. >> i can't sleep. i can't eat. i'm just -- i'm really nervous. i just want jose to come home. >> reporter: yesterday, volunteers gathered to hand out leaflets alerting neighbors

about the abduction on tuesday. authorities say 27-year-old jose rodriquez raised julini la guardia at his own -- rodriquez as his own but is not. the stanislaus sheriff's didn't thinks jose may reach out to someone along the way. we just spoke to authorities and the search for the two is e xpected to continue at the delta canal tomorrow morning. two sheriff search teams pulled vehicles from the water last week but none of them have been the 27-year-old toyota corolla rodriquez was seen last driving. they pulled a silver lexus on

r eported. northbound 101 as you come up on the capitol expressway. so watch for the crews to be in the area. it's actually closer to tully road. the fire department should be arriving soon. >> let's go to steve. mostly sunny again today. not as warm as the weekend. sunny, nice. temperatures, 70s, low 80s. a little sliver of is coming back from crockett, benicia. it doesn't last long but it's there. overall, we're looking for a lot of sunshine, mild to warm conditions. the evenly wind they can find around the caldecott 20, about 26. other than that things have collapsed in the wind d epartment. they were still howling. patchy fog, chilly, mostly s unny, 0 to 70. santacruz will be close to the 70-degree range. mostly clear.

congresswoman's gabrielle giffords's life. the tucson shooting has really increased the calls for civility by partnership you will see that on display at tomorrow night's speech as members of congress are looking for members of the opposite party to sit with, usually democrats sit on one side of the house chamber. republicans sit on the other. but in the wake of the assassination attempt on congresswoman gabrielle giffords and the new focus on civility in congress, democrats and republicans are pairing up to sit together. >> i think we might get away from the seesaw and pep rally grade school nature of the state of the unions lately, which is just really silly. so i think it -- they might act more like grownups. now, president obama is expected to make several pitches for increased cooperation during his state of the union address.

in the meantime, housto congresswoman giffords remains in icu because of a builtup of spinal fluid in her brain. doctors say it happened after her move to houston from to sop. they hoped to transfer her more quickly to a rehab center when arrived. they say she could be ready for rehab by the end the week. federal regulators say a report says two chances were missed before the san bruno explosion. the pipeline and hazardous material safety add min considered suffer -- administration considered t ougher rules. after that explosion, the agency passed rules require companies to report their pipeline. 7:20.

for further analysis. one neighbor shared these pictures shot off a cell phone. neighbors say they heard a car alarm going off. they rushed to the windows and saw the car on fire. >> reporter: we saw police and fire investigators combing the stairwell and bushes with flashlights. we're not sure what they were looking for. at this point, the woman is considered a dane doe until investigators can confirm her identity. if you step out here over into the street, this is webster. this was shut off between haight and paige but it has reopened. so you should experience no delays in this area whatsoever.

breaking news in -- breaking news in florida. there's been an officer- involved shooting. these are live pictures -- this is happening in st. petersburg in the city asouth side. three people have been wounded. two city police officers in critical condition. a u.s. marshal is in stable condition. the shooting happened as the u.s. marshal service arrived at a house at 8:00 a.m. to serve a warrant on a suspect for aggregated battery. there is a local school nearby.

the suspect is obviously still on the loose. three law enforcement officers shot and injured. we will continue this story and bring you more information as we get it. meanwhile, the search will resume this morning for a m issing san francisco fisherman who is believed to have fallen overboard in the delta. harry lee lee's boat was found saturday afternoon threat -- floating unattended in e astern -- in eastern contra costa county. >> he loved to fish. he was out there by himself yesterday. sheriffs say lee was wearing a life jacket but it was the type

that has to be manually o perated. they say if he hit his head or became unconscious for some reason, he would not have been able to activate it. overnight an earthquake shook the san jose area. it was a magnitude 3. it struck east of the city about 11:15 last night. it happened about ten miles north of morgan hill. now, that tremor is the second to shake the san jose area this month. there was a 4.1 magnitude quake on january 7th. an estimated 90,000 people in santa clara county live in amounts that are vulnerable in an earthquake and they don't know it. the team at san jose state university conducted a survey about eight years ago that c ounted more than 2700 soft story apartments in the county. that's a building with a weak first floor. the exact addresses of the b uilding still have not been

announced yesterday. came me upmaldonado of soledad is accused of cropping the ears of dogs to make them stand up straight. the owner of two 14-week-old puppies turn his dogs over the s pca after their ears became infected. there is a $1 north korea reward to find maldonado. 7:36. a northern california man has died while swimming off the shores of kauai during a vacation. it appears that charles mcgown was in distress while stilling off the south shore. the lifeguards were able to help him to shore. they performedded cpr but unfortunately, he was announced dead shortly after arrive -- after arriving at the hospital.

a southern california man is in critical condition this morning. he almost drowned at the maverick surf stop. jacob was paddling saturday morning when pulled over by a wave. this is video of the seen we first showed you on saturday. he was airlifted to the h ospital. he's been placed in a medically induced coma. 7:36. just over an hour from now, city crews will close a section of the great highway between lincoln way and sloan boulevard. >> reporter: it's a beautiful and clear morning here. you can see the waves coming up and over to the left you can see there's quite a few cars parked out here. a short time ago, we saw about a dozen surfers head into the water. if you are planning on heading out here later this afternoon, keep in mind one of the great highways to get here will be

closed. sanfrancisco department of public work crews plan to clean up the debris and we talked to people who drive along the great highway and they say that sand in the road can affect the driving conditions. it can be a particular problem. a sand berm might form. >> especially like coming into the parking lot, you know, there will be drifts of sand and, you know, the buses and all of that to park here to turn around. you can tell.

>> reporter: now, the san francisco department of public works has been tackling the problem of erosion on the great highway. you are looking at some pictures from newschopper2, taken last year between december 2009 and january 2010, as much as 70 feet of the bluff below the highway eroded away during some winter storms. last year, the department of public works had to place a 4 20-foot long rock wall along this portion of the great highway. that's what -- you are looking at part of it. but again, starting tomorrow, the great highway will be closed to together between sloat and lincoln way. it will be cloaked until 3::00 and again tomorrow and every day this week until friday. live in san francisco, back to you. >> thank you. got the heads up on that. sal is here to tell us about the rest of the commute. how are we doing this. >> right now, we're doing pretty well around the bay area. as a matter of fact, if you are

had a relative who was scheduled to be sentenced in a double homicide. polices say 38-year-old lamar moore walked past the police station's front desk yesterday and started -- started shooting down a hallway hitting at least four officers. the ininjured police officers are expected to survive. detroit's police chief says the police department is reassessing all of its security and all o f -- at all of its police stations. a member of los angeles mayor antonio villaraigosa's staff is on leave after being arrested on suspicion of a ttacking people at a nightclub. police say they received a domestic violence calls. the staffer is a member of the gang reduction and youth development office.

welcome back time now, 7:53. in case you didn't hear, it's cold on the -- in the northeastern u.s. a lot of people are waking up to some of the coldest temperatures they've seen in years. temperatures expected to drop to less than 30 below zero in some parts of the northeast. already at least two deaths are blamed on that bitter cold weather including in c onnecticut, a woman was found frozen, dead, in her driveway.

the severe conditions are believed to be coming from that cold air mass steve's been telling us from canada. 7:53. the cruise ship that was stranded off the southern california coast last year, it's now in san francisco for repairs starting today. here's a live look at the ship in the bay right now as dave pointed out. it's a little hazy of a shot. this morning bay area workers will start fixing the damage on board the carnival splendor. an engine fire at sea left 4500 crew members and passengers without electricity, food for several days last year. they are launching a new effort to stop water bottle, plastic. the city is replacing with

refilling stations. the first ones are located in golden gate park. the academy sciences, the airport and several schools. >> very interesting. something to think about. sleeping with your pets could be hazardous to your health. this is according to a new study from uc davis. about diseases you can actually catch from dogs and cats. researchers came up with a list of contagious decembers, i ncluding the plague, internal parasites and cat scratch disease. never heard of that one. they are saying the risk is low but when it happens it can actually be loyal, especially for children and for people would have weak immune systems. it was just something to think about. >> it's -- it 6:ousy can be pretty serious -- it obviously can be pretty serious. kind of reminds you of that song "cat scratch fever." >> gosh, tori. you are dating us. i know what you are talking

juliani cardenas are alive. >> i do not know where my son is at. i don't know. he hasn't contacted me or contacted the family, i'm very worried about him and the baby. >> reporter: yesterday volunteered hand the out leaflets. his mother is convinced her son would not hurt him because he raised juliani as his own son despite not being his father. he broke up the mother recently, the split and his recent job loss hit jose hard. the stanislaus county deputy told the the search will continue tomorrow at the delta- mendota canal. five vehicles were pulled from the water but none have been the silver toyota corolla 27- year-old jose rodriguez was

channel 2 website, ktvu.com. in the past half hour, police reopened the section of webster street in san francisco. the street was blocked off between page and haight after a woman's body was found inside a burning car. tara moriarty is at the scene. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. one of the head scratchers is the burning car was facing this direction, but if you'll take a look here at the arrow this is a one-way street. obviously the person pulled in incorrectly. that's one of the things that investigators are going to have to figure out. if you look down here, you can see debris left over from where the fire was burning and also if you look up you can see it where the tree was singed. right now we'll take a look at some pictures that a neighbor shot off his cell phone. the body was found inside of the car and it is that of a woman. just after 3:00 this morning, witnesses say they heard a car

alarm go off. they rushed to the window and saw the car engulfed in flames. arson and homicide investigators had the car removed by a tow truck to preserve the evidence and it is being analyzed right now at a laboratory. neighbors say it was quite a spectacle. >> it's really crazy, two blocks down is like an elementary school, and we live across the street here. so we know the neighborhood pretty well. and, yeah, it was shocking. >> reporter: we're here off of rose, it's a side street off of webster. one neighbor who lives across the street said he is concerned about drugs. he said there's a lot of truck activity in this neighborhood. and other people we talked to say they are working hard to keep these sidewalks safe. now, again, firefighters and police investigators were combing the bushes and stairwells with flash lights. we're not sure what they were looking for early this morning. obviously it was connected to the case.

they even said they weren't sure what they were looking for, so if that's a weapon or not, we don't know at this point. again, we're on rose, right here. if you take a look, this is webster, the big street that was blocked off, one block right here, for much of the morning. it just reopened, i would say a half an hour ago. if you need to get through the area, there are absolutely no delays at this point. we're live in san francisco. i'm tara moriarty. a 60-year-old man was assaulted and killed. police found the man on center street before 11:00 last night. he later died at the hospital. investigators say he was suffering from wounds caused by an assault with a deadly weapon. we spoke to police within the past hour, but they are still not releasing details about the type of weapon that was used. no arrests have been made. time now 8:06.

google made an announce. it's giving outgoing c.e.o. $100 million for his leadership in the past decade, giving him the money in stock and stock options between now and 2015. google announced last week the 55-year-old will step aside as the c.e.o. and become executive chairman in april. and there are published reports schmidt wants to become a talk show host. he's been a regular guest on a cnn foreign affairs program. the accused gunman in the tucson shootings is due to appear in a phoenix courthouse today to face additional charges. the 22-year-old jared loughner is accused of shooting 19 people including congresswoman gabrielle giffords. six of the shooting victims died. loughner has already been charged with three counts of attempted murder for the shootings of giffords and two of her aides. today he may be charged with murder for the deaths of the six people. in new york city this morning, mayor bloomberg is calling for changes to the nation's gun laws. he just spoke at a news

we're following breaking news coming from florida this morning. just moments ago, we found out that two police officers were killed in a shooting in st. petersburg, near tampa. you're looking at live pictures. a lot of police activity right now. we've also heard that a third officer, a u.s. marshal, was wounded. the marshal and those officers had gone to arrest an armed suspect on aggravated battery charges, a known criminal with a long history of crimes. the suspect is still, as we

speak, barricaded inside that house. as you can see, it's surround by s.w.a.t. teams. two police officers have been shot and killed in st. petersburg, florida. >> and a police officer in oregon has been shot after he pulled over a man for speeding. he was shot more than once. we don't know much more. police say the shooter is still on the loose. police are looking for him and this is a breaking story. we'll continue to follow this from oregon and bring you details as we get it. 8:31. the search will resume this morning for a missing san francisco fisherman believed to have fallen overboard in the delta. 51-year-old harry lee's boat was found unattended near bethel island. the sheriff's office searched with boats and divers both saturday and yesterday.

investigators say lee was wearing a life jacket but it is the type that has to be manually operated. >> if he were to fall over and hit his head or be unconscious he wouldn't be able to activate. >> we're holding up. we're going to stay positive and hope for the best. >> and deputies say when they found the boat, the motor was still running. that indicates mr. lee was probably sitting in the front of the boat. they are saying he may have hit an object or a big wave that could have knocked him into the water. time is now 8:32. this morning jury selection will get underway in the trial of two men accused of killing bay area journalist chauncey bailey. the oakland post editor was shot and killed august 2, 2007. two men are facing murder charges in the case. prosecutors say bey ordered bailey's murder to stop him

from writing about the bakery's financial partners. 1000 prospective jurorrors may be filling out questionnaires. >> jared loughner, the suspect in the january 8 mass shooting in tucson, is scheduled to appear in court at 12:30 today. the arraignment will be held in phoenix. good morning, paul. >> reporter: good morning. because a federal judge was killed and also a congressional aide, this is a potential death penalty case. the prosecution is moving carefully. today loughner will be arraigned on attempted federal murder charges. the man behind the now infamous mug shot has been charged with attempting to kill arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords and two of her aides. the 22-year-old jared loughner is suspected of shooting 19 people at a grocery store in tucson, arizona. six were killed, including a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl. federal agents building the case against loughner searched his home and questioned people

who knew him. employees at this shop say he inquired about a tattoo of a bullet. >> we got some weird vibes from him. i told the fbi all he was talking about what his crazy dreams and how he knew how to control them. >> investigators are searching for evidence of mental illness and trying to learn what trigged the rampage. the congresswoman's husband believes some questions will remain unanswered. >> i don't think we're ever going to fully understand the why and the how, and the reason for what happened on the 8th of january. >> reporter: giffords has been transferred to a hospital in houston, she's not ready to start rehabilitation because of fluid on the brain but doctors say they are surprised with the progress she's already made. back here at the federal courthouse, prosecutors are going to file a motion today. they want all future hearings moved back down to tucson where

the witnesses and victims live. and then on the horizon, the defense will no doubt try to seek a change of venue and have the case moved out of the state of arizona. their fear, they can not get a fair trial here because of all the tremendous pre-trial publicity. >> is there any word on the amount of security that is planned for today's hearing? >> reporter: well, we can see already, you can't see off camera but to the left and right we see police officers in helmets, streets are sealed off. it looks to be heavy security. >> we will continue to follow the story. thank you, live in arizona. 8:35. overnight an earthquake shook the san jose area, it was a magnitude 3 hitting east of the city at 11:15, 10 mills north of morgan hill. the tremor is the second to shake the san jose area this month. it was a 4.1 quake on january

7th. an estimated 90,000 people in santa clara county live in vulnerable apartments and may not know it. a survey counted 2500 soft story apartments in the county. that's a building that has a weak first floor. the exact addresses of the buildings have not been announced yet. the survey was partially paid for by the county's emergency preparedness council but the executive board was worried they would be exposed to lawsuits if that list caused property values to go down. 8:36. the monterrey county spca is warning people about a man suspected of mutilating puppies and posing as a veterinarian. damian maldonado is accused of cropping the ears of dogs to make them stand up straight. the owner of two 14 week old puppies turned his dogs over to the spca after their ears

became infected. monterrey county is offering a $1000 reward to find maldonado. 8:36. a northern california man has died while swimming off hawaii. lifeguards say it appeared the 68-year-old carmel resident charles mcgowan was in distress while swim offing kawaii's south shore. lifeguards perform cpr but he was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. a southern california man is in critical condition this morning after almost drowning at the mavericks surf spot near half moon bay. the 30-year-old jacob trent was paddling saturday morning when he was pulled under by a huge wave. you're looking at video that we first showed you on saturday. he was air lifted to the hospital. they placed him in a medically induced coma. in 15 minutes, city crews will close the section of san francisco's great highway between lincoln way and slope

boulevard. we have what drivers can expect. good morning, ali. >> reporter: good morning, tory. it's sunny and clear at ocean beach in san francisco, all morning long we watched several surfers head into the water and take advantage of the great weather. if you plan on heading to ocean beach, one of the main highways to get here will be closed. 20 minutes from now the great highway is scheduled to be closed to traffic between slope boulevard and lincoln way. it will stay closed until 3 p.m. today and then again every day this week until friday. i just got off the phone with the public information officer. crews will bring in heavy machinery to clear away some of the sand dunes that you see on the side of the road. they will also relocate and move some sand back to ocean beach where it came from. as you know, ocean beach runs parallel to the great highway. sometimes with the coastal wind, the sand from the beach ends up on the road. people who drive along the great highway and come here

frequently say despite the inconvenience to drivers, they are glad to hear about the maintenance work. >> it's a good thing, because people drive motorbikes and bicycles and cars, and if you get in the soft sand you'll sink and pull the wheel. i've seen people wreck over here by the zoo. >> especially like coming into the parking lot, you know, there will be drifts of sand and the buses and all that that park here that turn around, you can tell. >> reporter: the san francisco department of public works has been tackling the problem of erosion on the great highway for the past couple years. we're look at some pictures from news chopper 2 taken last year. last year between december 2009 and last january, as much as 70 feet of the bluff below, part of the great highway, eroded away during some winter rain storms. back out here live, we want to show you the department of public works last year put up a 420-foot rock wall along this portion of the great highway, those are the rocks you're
