ow. the explosion happened in the baggage area at the chechen airport. we're on the scene of developing news in san francisco. in the past few minutes, we learned the body discovered inside a burning car was a female. this car fire happened in the city's haight district. tara moriarty is there and joins us now with what investigators are saying. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. we just learned from our sources that the victim, the person t rapped inside of that

burning car was, indeed, a woman. if you take a look behind me, you can see as crews are getting ready to haul that car away, they've wrapped it up, sealed it up and will take it away from -- to the crime lab. authorities decided to move the entire car with the body inside and then take it away, as to not destroy evidence. we're between webster and page and haight. one neighbor shared with us pictures off his cell phone. he says there was quite a spectacle in the street, seeing how there is an el ellenmy t ri -- elementary school nearby. >> i heard a car alarm. >> they realized there was a body in the vehicle after the

flames were put out. at this point, we don't have an age or a gender on the victim as the victim's body was severely damaged in this fire. >> reporter: now, we saw police and fire investigators combing the stairwells and bushes with flashlights. we're not sure what they were looking for. workers from the department of health that were here earlier on scene, told us they were here to assist. again, webster is blocked off from paige to haight. i'm not sure how long it will be closed this morning. you can see that there is a cop car there at the top of the hill. there is also one at the bottom. so you definitely cannot get through. we'll let i know when the street reopens. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. oakland police are searching for suspects after a 60-year-old man was assaulted and killed. police found the man on center street just before 11:00 last

night. he later died at the hospital. investigators say he was suffering from wounds caused by assault with a deadly weapon. we just spoke to police but they are not releasing details about the type of weapon released. the man attacked -- we spoke to the mother of the man suspected of abducting a 4-year- old child. >> reporter: good morning. within the last little while, her gut tells her that her and her grandson are still alive. >> i can't sleep. i can't eat. i'm just -- i'm really nervous. i just want jose to come home. >> reporter: yesterday, volunteers gathered to hand out leaflets alerting neighbors

about the abduction on tuesday. authorities say 27-year-old jose rodriquez raised julini la guardia at his own -- rodriquez as his own but is not. the stanislaus sheriff's didn't thinks jose may reach out to someone along the way. we just spoke to authorities and the search for the two is e xpected to continue at the delta canal tomorrow morning. two sheriff search teams pulled vehicles from the water last week but none of them have been the 27-year-old toyota corolla rodriquez was seen last driving. they pulled a silver lexus on

1, 2, 3, 4! >> jack lalanne died of pneumonia yesterday at his home. he was 96. he was a fixture of tv. he aired right here on ktvu for years and it changed the way america worked out. >> he really brought fitness to everybody. it wasn't just the guys on venice lifting weights. it was you, me, your wife, your husband, your kids. >> lalanne graduated from berkeley and ascended -- and attended uc beveragely. he opened his first gym in 1936. it was american's modern day club. he attributed his long life of two hours of weight lifting and one hour of swimming every day. he made it to 96. certainly an incredible icon.

congresswoman's gabrielle giffords's life. the tucson shooting has really increased the calls for civility by partnership you will see that on display at tomorrow night's speech as members of congress are looking for members of the opposite party to sit with, usually democrats sit on one side of the house chamber. republicans sit on the other. but in the wake of the assassination attempt on congresswoman gabrielle giffords and the new focus on civility in congress, democrats and republicans are pairing up to sit together. >> i think we might get away from the seesaw and pep rally grade school nature of the state of the unions lately, which is just really silly. so i think it -- they might act more like grownups. now, president obama is expected to make several pitches for increased cooperation during his state of the union address.

breaking news in -- breaking news in florida. there's been an officer- involved shooting. these are live pictures -- this is happening in st. petersburg in the city asouth side. three people have been wounded. two city police officers in critical condition. a u.s. marshal is in stable condition. the shooting happened as the u.s. marshal service arrived at a house at 8:00 a.m. to serve a warrant on a suspect for aggregated battery. there is a local school nearby.

that has to be manually o perated. they say if he hit his head or became unconscious for some reason, he would not have been able to activate it. overnight an earthquake shook the san jose area. it was a magnitude 3. it struck east of the city about 11:15 last night. it happened about ten miles north of morgan hill. now, that tremor is the second to shake the san jose area this month. there was a 4.1 magnitude quake on january 7th. an estimated 90,000 people in santa clara county live in amounts that are vulnerable in an earthquake and they don't know it. the team at san jose state university conducted a survey about eight years ago that c ounted more than 2700 soft story apartments in the county. that's a building with a weak first floor. the exact addresses of the b uilding still have not been

closed. sanfrancisco department of public work crews plan to clean up the debris and we talked to people who drive along the great highway and they say that sand in the road can affect the driving conditions. it can be a particular problem. a sand berm might form. >> especially like coming into the parking lot, you know, there will be drifts of sand and, you know, the buses and all of that to park here to turn around. you can tell.

besides 31 people, another 130 people are injured. there are reports that a suicide bomber is behind the attack and that the explosion happened in the international arrival halls. chechnyan rebelled have carried out attacks in recent years and the president of russia is ordering authorities to beef up security at moscow's two other airports, transport facilities including the subway system which has been the target of past terror attacks. back here at home, in the past hour we talked to the mother of the man suspected of kidnapping a 4-year-old boy. we have the plea from the suspect's mother. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. jose rodriguez's mother lives in san jose, and within the last hour-and-a-half, we spoke to her by phone. she told us that her gut tells her that her son and 4-year-old

juliani cardenas are alive. >> i do not know where my son is at. i don't know. he hasn't contacted me or contacted the family, i'm very worried about him and the baby. >> reporter: yesterday volunteered hand the out leaflets. his mother is convinced her son would not hurt him because he raised juliani as his own son despite not being his father. he broke up the mother recently, the split and his recent job loss hit jose hard. the stanislaus county deputy told the the search will continue tomorrow at the delta- mendota canal. five vehicles were pulled from the water but none have been the silver toyota corolla 27- year-old jose rodriguez was

channel 2 website, ktvu.com. in the past half hour, police reopened the section of webster street in san francisco. the street was blocked off between page and haight after a woman's body was found inside a burning car. tara moriarty is at the scene. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. one of the head scratchers is the burning car was facing this direction, but if you'll take a look here at the arrow this is a one-way street. obviously the person pulled in incorrectly. that's one of the things that investigators are going to have to figure out. if you look down here, you can see debris left over from where the fire was burning and also if you look up you can see it where the tree was singed. right now we'll take a look at some pictures that a neighbor shot off his cell phone. the body was found inside of the car and it is that of a woman. just after 3:00 this morning, witnesses say they heard a car

alarm go off. they rushed to the window and saw the car engulfed in flames. arson and homicide investigators had the car removed by a tow truck to preserve the evidence and it is being analyzed right now at a laboratory. neighbors say it was quite a spectacle. >> it's really crazy, two blocks down is like an elementary school, and we live across the street here. so we know the neighborhood pretty well. and, yeah, it was shocking. >> reporter: we're here off of rose, it's a side street off of webster. one neighbor who lives across the street said he is concerned about drugs. he said there's a lot of truck activity in this neighborhood. and other people we talked to say they are working hard to keep these sidewalks safe. now, again, firefighters and police investigators were combing the bushes and stairwells with flash lights. we're not sure what they were looking for early this morning. obviously it was connected to the case.

they even said they weren't sure what they were looking for, so if that's a weapon or not, we don't know at this point. again, we're on rose, right here. if you take a look, this is webster, the big street that was blocked off, one block right here, for much of the morning. it just reopened, i would say a half an hour ago. if you need to get through the area, there are absolutely no delays at this point. we're live in san francisco. i'm tara moriarty. a 60-year-old man was assaulted and killed. police found the man on center street before 11:00 last night. he later died at the hospital. investigators say he was suffering from wounds caused by an assault with a deadly weapon. we spoke to police within the past hour, but they are still not releasing details about the type of weapon that was used. no arrests have been made. time now 8:06.

google made an announce. it's giving outgoing c.e.o. $100 million for his leadership in the past decade, giving him the money in stock and stock options between now and 2015. google announced last week the 55-year-old will step aside as the c.e.o. and become executive chairman in april. and there are published reports schmidt wants to become a talk show host. he's been a regular guest on a cnn foreign affairs program. the accused gunman in the tucson shootings is due to appear in a phoenix courthouse today to face additional charges. the 22-year-old jared loughner is accused of shooting 19 people including congresswoman gabrielle giffords. six of the shooting victims died. loughner has already been charged with three counts of attempted murder for the shootings of giffords and two of her aides. today he may be charged with murder for the deaths of the six people. in new york city this morning, mayor bloomberg is calling for changes to the nation's gun laws. he just spoke at a news

we're following breaking news coming from florida this morning. just moments ago, we found out that two police officers were killed in a shooting in st. petersburg, near tampa. you're looking at live pictures. a lot of police activity right now. we've also heard that a third officer, a u.s. marshal, was wounded. the marshal and those officers had gone to arrest an armed suspect on aggravated battery charges, a known criminal with a long history of crimes. the suspect is still, as we

became infected. monterrey county is offering a $1000 reward to find maldonado. 8:36. a northern california man has died while swimming off hawaii. lifeguards say it appeared the 68-year-old carmel resident charles mcgowan was in distress while swim offing kawaii's south shore. lifeguards perform cpr but he was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. a southern california man is in critical condition this morning after almost drowning at the mavericks surf spot near half moon bay. the 30-year-old jacob trent was paddling saturday morning when he was pulled under by a huge wave. you're looking at video that we first showed you on saturday. he was air lifted to the hospital. they placed him in a medically induced coma. in 15 minutes, city crews will close the section of san francisco's great highway between lincoln way and slope

boulevard. we have what drivers can expect. good morning, ali. >> reporter: good morning, tory. it's sunny and clear at ocean beach in san francisco, all morning long we watched several surfers head into the water and take advantage of the great weather. if you plan on heading to ocean beach, one of the main highways to get here will be closed. 20 minutes from now the great highway is scheduled to be closed to traffic between slope boulevard and lincoln way. it will stay closed until 3 p.m. today and then again every day this week until friday. i just got off the phone with the public information officer. crews will bring in heavy machinery to clear away some of the sand dunes that you see on the side of the road. they will also relocate and move some sand back to ocean beach where it came from. as you know, ocean beach runs parallel to the great highway. sometimes with the coastal wind, the sand from the beach ends up on the road. people who drive along the great highway and come here

frequently say despite the inconvenience to drivers, they are glad to hear about the maintenance work. >> it's a good thing, because people drive motorbikes and bicycles and cars, and if you get in the soft sand you'll sink and pull the wheel. i've seen people wreck over here by the zoo. >> especially like coming into the parking lot, you know, there will be drifts of sand and the buses and all that that park here that turn around, you can tell. >> reporter: the san francisco department of public works has been tackling the problem of erosion on the great highway for the past couple years. we're look at some pictures from news chopper 2 taken last year. last year between december 2009 and last january, as much as 70 feet of the bluff below, part of the great highway, eroded away during some winter rain storms. back out here live, we want to show you the department of public works last year put up a 420-foot rock wall along this portion of the great highway, those are the rocks you're

if you take a look over here, this is where the burning car was found this morning with a woman's body inside. you can see all of the debris right here from the fire and you can see where it swept up along the tree up here and singed the leaves. now, right now we're going to take a look at pictures that a neighbor shot off his cell phone just after 3:00 this morning. witnesses say they heard a car alarm go off. they rushed to the window and saw the car engulfed in flames. arson and homicide investigators had the car removed by a flat bed tow truck about an hour-and-a-half ago to preserve all of the evidence. it is now being analyzed at a laboratory. neighbors are concerned because just three days ago, someone was killed a block away in an incident involving a shovel and a knife. some believe it was drug- related. >> i walked my 9-year-old down webster, this very block, every day to get to school. and so i don't want to be in a situation where i have to worry about my 9-year-old in crossfire or seeing something

that he shouldn't see. >> reporter: we saw police and fire investigators combing the bushes and stairwells with flash lights early this morning. we're not sure what they were looking for, if it was some sort of weapon or what. again, at this point, the woman is considered a jane doe until investigators can determine her identity. neighbors that we spoke to this morning said that in just the past week they have had two safety meetings to try regulate stuff around here and they are going to be meeting once again especially in light of what's happened early this morning. we're live in san francisco. i'm tara moriarty, channel 2 news. thank you. 8:49. a member of los angeles mayor antonio villaraigosa's staff was placed on administrative leave after being arrested last night on suspicion of attacking police officers at a nightclub. that unidentified staffer and her husband were arrested and later released after posting bail. police say they received a domestic disturbance call and

the female staffer reportedly jumped on the back of one of the police officers and started hitting him as they took her husband into custody. if that staffer with a a member of the gang re-- that staffer was a member of the gang office. a dispute over privacy, many german users why angry that facebook's friend finder was mining e-mail addresses from private lists and asking them to join facebook. after seven months of negotiations, facebook has agreed to a prominent explanation about friend finder on user pages, and include instructions for limiting the application's access to private e-mail lists. this morning, the pope is issuing a message about being responsible online. he told bloggers to be respectful when spreading the message about the catholic faith on the web, part of a speech for the church's world day of social communications.

the pope has a website, facebook page and youtube channel as a way to reach young people. 8:50. they may not brag about it but actors from several big screen blockbuster movies have been nominated for this year's razzy awards. the "twilight" saga, nominated in nine razzy categories, including the worst movie. worst supporting actress including cher for burlesque, liza minelli for "sex and the city," and barbra streisand for little fockers. the razzies, as you know, are the opposite of the academy awards. they are supposed to be recognizing the worst performances. the winners of the razzies will be announced february 26. >> i can't date her, she's my oldest friend. >> i know what you mean. audiences had no problem making commitments to ashton kutcher and natalie portman, playing friends with benefits who try not to fall in live.

>> the cruise ship stranded off the southern california coast last year is now in san francisco for repairs. this is a live look actually of the ship in the bay, still looking hazy out there. this morning bay area workers will start fixing the damage on the carnival splendor. a fire at sea left 4500 passengers without running water, electricity or hot food for days. the work could take about a month. in san francisco they are launching an efforts to prevent water bottle waste and promote good tap water, replacing water fountains with refilling stations like this one, where people can fill their own reusable water bottles. currently there be seven refilling stations around town with a goal of 15. the first ones are in golden gate park, academy of sciences, airports and several schools. this is new. a california businessman plans to bring pot to pop.

clay butler is marketing a line of medical marijuana soft drinks. the drink is called canna cola. it contains thc. it could possibly be available as early as springtime. the 12-ounce bottle would cost between $10 and $15. 8:55. sleeping with your pets could be hazardous to your health according to a study out of uc- davis about diseases you can catch from dogs and cats. researchers say they came up with an extensive list of contagious diseases including the plague, parasites and cat scratch disease. the risk is low but when it occurs it can be life- threatening for children and people with weak immune systems. the woman from idaho who won almost $200 million in a mega millions jackpot last month has disappeared and her estranged husband plans to sue
