>> reporter: i'm live in san francisco, where a gruesome discovery is made inside of a burned-out car. why neighbors and a local politician say it's part of the disturbing trend. we're following a terrorist attack at a major airport in russia that killed over 30 people. what authorities said the bomber did to make it more deadly. >> reporter: it weighs more than 130,000 fons. why the port of san francisco says this massive ship is making a big contribution to the economy.

good afternoon. we begin this noontime with a female body found in a burned car in a san francisco neighborhoods. this is just the latest -- neighborhood. this is just the latest in the series of crimes in the lower haight district. tara moriarty has been following the case all foreigning. -- all morning. where does the investigation stand at this hour? >> reporter: well, right now, police are reviewing surveillance video. if you take a look behind me you can see the charred marks. that's where the burning car was found. but just down street down the corner, there are four surveillance cameras and police are hoping that they provide some clues. just after 3:00 this morning, fire crews found a car engulfed by flames. >> i heard a horn from a car going off. it had been a few minutes. >> reporter: moses lives across the street. he rushed outside and took pictures with his cell phone. >> at that point, the flames in the car were probably above our heads. >> reporter: then firefighters

made a grim discovery, the body of a woman inside. >> homicide investigators along with arson investigators are working together to determine exactly what happened. >> reporter: investigators r emoved the entire car with the flatbed truck and took it to a crime lab for further analysis. this happened on a side street called rose. >> so that's a murder there, a half a block away, and then h ere. >> reporter: this woman has noticed a spike in crime in just the past week. >> i walk my 9-year-old down webster, this very block every day to get to school. i don't want to be in a situation where i have to worry about my 9-year-olds in crossfire or in seeing something he shue shouldn't see. >> it demonstrates an uptick in violence that we haven't seen in a number of years. >> reporter: the supervisor says police need to do more beat patrol and work with those being released from juvenile hall. >> there is a huge disconnection with a huge

leadership in the -- with the police department, the district attorney's office. >> a young boy was supposed to have have found a gun in a -- have found a gun in this play area over here. he must have left with it. he must it -- it was -- it was in his pocket and he shot himself. >> reporter: she says a boy shot himself by accident and then three days ago, a man boarded -- broke into this boarded up apartment and -- with a shovel and the man inside defended himself, killing him. so far there's been two community meetings on safety and now there will be more. police have spot -- have not released the identity of the female victim as of yet. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. at least 35 people are dead from what appears to be a terrorist attack at an airport in russia. it happened just before 7:00 this morning, pacific standard

time. in the domodedovo airport. it's about 14 miles outside of moscow and it's the busiest airport there. the explosion occurred at the entrance of the arrival gate. russian's state pd says it wass the act of a suicide bomber who stuffed a homemade bomb full of metal spikes to make it more deadly. 150 people were rounded -- were wounded. run president medvedev held a -- russian president medvedev held a meeting. white house press secretary robert gibbs also delivered a statement from president obama. >> michelle and i offer our d eepest condolences to the russian people who have suffered greatly at the hands of terrorism. >> gibbs say the president is offering any assistance that russia may need. russia has a history of terror

attacks but most have o ccurredded in chechnya. the accused gunman in the tucson shootingth is due to appear in a tucson courthouse today. he's accused of shooting 19 people including congresswoman, gabriell giffords -- gids. gabriellee give orders. in -- giffords. in the meantime, c ongresswoman giffords remains in icu because of a -- because of fluid buildup in her brain. doctors say this happened after she was moved to houston. they say she could be ready for rehab by the end of the week. this morning, jury selection got underway in the two accused of killing chauncey bailey. the editor was shot and killed

in august of 2009. former your black muslim bakery leader, yusef bey iv and anton mackey face murder charges. prosecutors say bey ordered the murder to stop him from writing about the bakery's financial troubles. as many as 1,000 perspective jurors could fill out questionnaires. divers are taking a break for the search for 4-year-old juliani cardenas but they plan to resume tomorrow. they spent u week searching the canal, where the water can be 20 to 25 feet deep in places. a warm worker reportedly saw the car matching the one belonging to the suspect, hoe hey rodriquez. so far they've pulled out five cars but all are unrelated to the case. this morning, juliani cardenas's mother said --

>> i just want him to turn him in. i just want him to come to his senses and bring the baby back. >> yesterday family and friends passed out fliers around the town of patterson. authorities say they are also searching in san jose where rodriquez might have gone. they say they will keep d isplaying the message about julie annie on the -- jluiani -- juliani on the electronic b oards. stay with ktvu for continuing coverage on the search. and we'll continue to brick you updates at ktvu.com. the coast guard is resuming their search for fishermen who apparently fell overboard on saturday in the delta waters of eastern contra costa county. someone spotted the boat b elonging to harry lee saturday afternoon, adrift with no one on board. sheriff deputies and the coast guard searched for him saturday and yesterday but did not find him.

leigh's believed to have been wearing a manual life jacket that would require pulling a string to inflate it. if he was incapacity stated -- incapacitated, they say, s omehow, he may not have been able to pull the string. a ship in san francisco at the port getting much-needed repairs. allie rasmus has more. >> reporter: this is the carnival cruise ship splendor right here behind us. you can see some of the repair work has already begun. there's two cranes working on the -- off the back end of the ship. if we pan down below that, we can see a large group of people walking along the ship. this pier pulled into pier 70 in san francisco yesterday. it's a bit infamiliar use, this shape made headlines a few months ago for some of the wrong reasons. back on november, a fire knocked out power to the entire ship. that left 4500 passengers s tranded on board without

electricity, food or without working toilets. the cruise ship was on its way to baja, california when it happened. this ship is in the process of getting a new engine in san francisco. an incredible amount of work is going into those repairs. the deputy of the port says at any given time there are at least 800 people working to repair this ship. the people working are all local bay area workers. so the port deputy says this provides a boost to the low local economy. >> it will mean thousands of hours for prayer plumbers, pipe fitters, electricians. it's just a real shot in the arm to our economy. >> our cameras were there as the ship pulled into san francisco bay yesterday morning. it came here because san francisco has the only f loating dry dock in the west coast that can accommodate a ship of this size. the splendor is 950 feet long. 120feet wide. it's so large that it can't fit

we've not had a storm in a while. but public work crews are still dealing with public -- with f alling trees. workers busy sidewalking care of this situation in oakland's rockridge district. this 40-feet tree fell on miles avenue at the -- near the rockridge b.a.r.t. station. no injuries are reported. one street light was damaged. miles was closed until crew finished cutting up the tree. january has been a violent

and sometimes deadly month for law enforcement across the country. police in oregon are looking for a man who shot and critically wounded a man last night near a traffic stop. police in florida used a backhoe to get to a barricaded suspect they say shot and killed two officers this morning and wounded a u.s. marshal trying to serve a warrant on him. they found the gunman dead inside his house. investigators say more than 100 shots were fired in the gun battle that left the officers with fatal wounds. and in miami, a public memorial was held this morning for two officers killed friday while trying to serve a murder warrant. another officer shot and killed a gunman. thousands of people killed the american airlines arena for this morning's memorial. investigators in detroit are still trying to figure out why a 38-year-old man shot and wounded four officers inside a police station yesterday afternoon. an officer returned fire, k illing lamar moore. moore's friends and family said

they were baffled by the s hooting. oakland is welcoming nine knew members to a special o utreach program that gets help troubled teens off the street. they began a three-day training station and will be mared with problem-solving police officers involved with the voter approved measure-y program. the idea is to approach kids on the street to get them back into school and job training. >> the nine new positions were funded by a grant from the obama administration. >> what we're doing today is training our nine new funded positions and they are together with the entire crew. so we're doing a combination of retraining the people who have been working with us and t raining the nine new people. oakland mayor jean quan says the program is particularly important after an outbreak of violence with gangs last month. president obama unveiled

the initiative of military families today with the help of michelle obama and joe biden and jill biden. the president said the government has an obligation to help the familyings -- families of service members who off often expression care about their l oved ones. this provide will -- had this program will provide better physical and psychological care for families, along with e ducatal opportunities for military kids, career opportunities for military spouses and better child care. tomorrow, the president will lay a road map for the next two years in his second annual state of the union address. he's expected to focus on jobs and the economy. he says the key to u.s. job growth is opening new markets to american products and boosting u.s. exports. he's also expected to talk more about budget cuts and deficit reduction. you can catch the president's state of the union address right here live on ktvu. it's set to start at 6:00 p.m. you will also find coverage on ktvu.com. and now we want to turn to

our meteorologist, a new member of the ktvu family, i would like to say welcome to rose mare -- rosemary oroscoe and find out what's happening with the forecast. >> thank you, tori. i came in at a great time. great weather going on. we have light winds, we have mostly sunny skies. we have 61 degrees in walnut creek at the moment. mostly sunny for the afternoon. a little breezy in the hills earlier today but those winds are starting to die down. you have to get above 1400 feet or so. mountdiablo reporting some pretty gusty conditions. morago, feeling pretty good. fair skies a little bit of patchy fog to start the morning and late night. the next five to ten days looking dry if you can believe it. our bay area forecast, a ridge of high pressure still in place and that will be the case throughout our week ahead. we're watching just fog pull in from the valleys through the early-morning hours. those offshore winds

continuing. as they do bricking in a little bit of fog through the early- morning hours. and we have, again, breezy conditions over the hills through the week. another dry day for today. this ridge of high pressure will keep this storm track to the north, pretty much what we've been seeing the last several days. your satellite view showing you just the trailing end of those systems bringing those mid and high level clouds. outside of that we remain dry dry. your temperatures outside right now, nice rebound. mid-50s for oakland and 60 degrees in san francisco at the moment. mountain view looks to be one of the warmer spots sitting at 62. at noontime, 50s to 60s. 3:00, mostly clear skies, fair, mild, 60 to 69 is what we're looking at for your afternoon today and into the evening h ours, upper 50s, low 60s. maybe your drive home, sun s etting right around 5:25 these

of 15. the first ones are located in golden gate park, the academy of sciences, the airport and several schools. overnight an earthquake shook san jose. it was a magnitude 3. and struck east of the city around 11:15 last night. the tremor is the second to shake the senator area this month. there was a 4.1 magnitude quake on january 7th. he was a bay area native and jack lalanne made it hip to be fit. >> one, two, three, four. >> lalanne died of pneumonia yesterday at his home in san luis obispo county at the age of 96. he was a fixture during the golden age of tv. his groundbreaking exercise program aired right here on ktvu for years and changed the way america worked out. >> he really brought fitness to everybody. it wasn't, you know, just the guys on venice lifting weights. it was you and me and, you know, your wife, your husband, your kids. >> lalanne garage wait a

you can see the dowing -- dow nearing the 12,000 mark. tech stocks especially help from intel, increasing its dividends sand saying it would buy back more of its stock. that company gained 1.7%. the dow is up 81, at 11,953. an emotional oprah winfully revealed what she called a bombshell family secret on her show today. the talk show host broke the news about her half sister, patricia, who she did not know about until recently. winfrey says her sister was given up for adoption as a child and had initiated the search for her family. she said she was most impressed with the fact that patricia never went to the media with the story even though she knew as early as 2007 that they were related. it's the cheese heads
