good morning. thank you for joining us. it's tuesday, january 25th. let's start with a quick check of weather. thank you. good morning. skies are clear, mostly clear. there could be patchy fog, but another spring like day. temperature-wise it doesn't feel like it. you can see the traffic is light, although there are some rough spots out there. not here, though. of who -- moving to highway 24 west. having our news this morning, in just a few hours the search returns to a canal the patterson. for the first time, chp helicopters will be there. we are joined now with a look at how they plan to help the dive teams. good morning. >> reporter: authorities are looking for anything that might float to the surface.

one week ago today this nightmare began. authorities here are just not giving up. in fact, they are going to be back out here later this morning at the canal because this search is not over. drivers will return to -- driverring will return to the canal where in parts it can be 25 feet deep. a total of five vehicles have been pulled from the water since this search began. none of the vehicles have matched the car. the reason for the continued search in the canal, the tracks found on tuesday are recent enough they match the area where a farm hand said he watched a car similar in description to rodriguez's roll into the water shortly after the abduction. search dogs were used to comb the area yesterday. the deputy sheriff reported no new leads. we spoke to rodriguez's mother in person. she pleaded for her son to come

back home, back to her and back to his family. >> i want jose to turn the baby in for him to turn himself in and he knows he has a family and we love him and i just want him to come to his senses and bring the baby back. we're here for him no matter what. >> reporter: you're look at rodriguez with him. he helped raise the boy since his birth and wasry -- was recently told he was no longer able to see the child. no one has seen either since he left with him. he hasn't used his cell phone or credit card since last tuesday. you can see right here the fog is very thick this morning. whether or not that will affect today's search, we will have to wait and see. the deputy sheriff says he expects to be here within the hour. we will bring you the latest and get an update from him. we will continue to follow

the story and the very latest developments throughout the morning news and throughout the day. please remember to check our website. you can also see our interview with the suspect's mother there. just look for the tab on our home page. we are following overnight news right now from san francisco. police have just confirmed for us that a teenager has been shot and killed in the bay view district. it happened about 1:30 this morning. police say a teenage boy about 15 or 16 years old died at the scene. another person was shot three times and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. no one is in custody. we will continue to update that story. a search will resume in just a couple of hours for a missing 90-year-old woman. it's a story we first brought you as developing news last night on our 10:00 news. she is 4' 11''. does not speak english.

take a look at her picture. she was last seen at 7:00 yesterday morning on north street as she was getting ready to take her daily walk. a search and rescue team canvassed the streets until after midnight. if you see her or have any information, please contact the police. this morning, police in concord are searching for teenagers wanted in a cruel attack. the victim, a mentally disabled man. it happened sunday night outside the victim's apartment building on clayton road. a group of teenagers, taunted him, then through rocks at him. the boys then rode off on bicycles. the victim was not seriously hurt but the attack has shocked his neighbors. >> he always goes to my car, opens up the corridor, helps me with my son. he's a very loving person. and people are so cruel

nowadays. >> concord police only have a vague description of the teenage attackers. if you have any information, please call concord police. well, in his state of the union address tonight, president obama is expected to agree with the need to cut government spending, but not at the expense of helping companies create jobs. don't forget, you can watch the president's speech right here live on ktvu channel 2. it is set to begin at 6:00 this evening. we will have more on our website, also. the owners of the pen eye ice creamery. you might remember this story. they are now traveling to washington this morning to hear the president's address in person. that's because they posted this youtube video thanking the president for federal stimulus money which allowed them to open their shop last august. the white house invited them to sit in the first lady's box to

watch that speech tonight. we are learning more details about the suicide bombing as not cow's bus -- moscow's busiest airport. take a look. the suicide bomber is said to have used a homemade deviced stuffed with small metal objects to make it more deadly. the victims include travelers from britain, germany and bull gar i can't. no claim of responsibility has been made yet, although militants have carried out many other terrorist attacks in russia. bay area increased ---- bay area airports have increased security following that attack. we asked people at oakland's airport how they would feel about it. >> i'm all for it. >> there would be people that would complain, but i wouldn't. >> i think people that want to create problems and havoc are

going to find a way to do it. >> now, some security experts say having people line up outside the terminals would just create another target. well supporters of college radio station kusf will gather on the steps of san francisco city hall today. today's rally is part of their campaign to save their station. last week, the university abruptly shut down the station and escorted the students out of the building. the station was sold. time now is 4:38. a lot of construction out at this time of day. any problems? we do have some closures. it is light out there, but some closures in san francisco for example. seize -- also the 280 ramp from 101 heading south is closed. these should be picked up anytime now.

and also east 80 at 7th. they are going to start running a traffic break. they have that far right lane closed on the lower deck. when they close it, the construction crews want a traffic break run to allow them to get those cones out of the way. this is a look at westbound bay bridge coming into san francisco. a look at san jose freeways right now, 280 looking good as you drive so far. 439ening. let's go to steve. just a hint of some patchy fog coming back in from the valley but it's nothing to what we had a while ago. there is an easterly breeze towards the delta. that may bring in some patchy fog. a few high clouds come on by and say, hey. that's about it. a quick forecast. lots of sunshine today. mild to warm. tomorrow, more of the same. patchy fog, i always mention

that. sunday and monday, a couple of our forecast models are hinting at cooler weather. a couple of them say maybe some rain on monday. i doubt it makes it, but i will mention it just the same. the first system to come through rarely does anything at all after a long stretch of dry weather. santa rosa -- if you're in that direction or heading that direction, you might even counter some very shallow patchy fog. 39, sacramento. everything continues to go up and over the ridge of high pressure is not going any brian wilson anytime soon. -- not going anywhere anytime soon. a lot going on out there but not headed in our direction.

we have clear skies. it's going to be another sunny, mostly sunny day. temperatures 60s to near 70 degrees. we continue to follow the very latest developments in the tucson shooting case. the man accused is pleading not guilty to charges of trying to kill gabrielle giffords and two of her staff members. jared loughner was smiling as he entered the phoenix courtroom. he looked much different, though, from his mug shot as his hair is now growing in. did not say a word during his court appearance so the court entered a not-guilty plea on

his behalf. the san francisco coroner hopes to identify a woman found in a burning car. we first showed you this yesterday on the morning news, the car was seen just after 3:00 a.m. sources tell us that police have identified a suspect. several people took video of that car on fire. they say the flames went as high as two stories. firefighters had trouble putting it out. one witness says he saw a man light a rag on fire, then toss it into the driver's side then run away. well, the disturbing rise in gang violence is prompting emergency action in the bay area's largest city. last night about 100 people crowded into san jose. city leaders called the emergency meeting as part of their efforts to stop the killings. there have been nine homicides in san jose during the first three weeks of the year.

three of those killings are tied to violent street gangs. >> i'm more aware of my children. they are going to grow up in this area and i don't want them to be -- i want them to be in a safe place. >> we will continue to have more police control and more police presence in this area. hopefully it will deter gang members from entering our neighborhood. >> san jose police say they are dealing with a growing crime problem with diminishing resources and th say the need for the public's help is more than ever to help fight crime. now 2011 is getting off to a violent start in all three of the bay area's big cities. oakland has had 11 homicides so far this year. as we mentioned, there have been 9 killings in san jose. san francisco has also had that includes the fatal shooting of a teenager this morning. planned parenthood has asked the fbi to investigate a

man. the visits were in new york, new jersey, independent you understand ---- indiana and arizona. the pro life group has conducted previous undercover projects targeting planned parenthood centers. a crime victim says she decided to move out of vallejo following a weekend burglary at her home. her family returned home saturday night to find her front door wide open. she then discovered burglars had trashed their home and made off with an "x" box and other items. she said she made four urgent calls to 911 put police didn't show up until seven hours later. >> unfortunately we don't have anybody available. people are fighting. they have to go to that first. >> you're just open for anybody

to do anything. >> now police say they have to always give life-threatening situations top priority. they also say big cuts in the police department's budget since the city filed for bankruptcy in 2008 is affecting response times. vallejo police say they have 90 sworn officers -- that compares to 155 officers before the bankruptcy. they return -- respond to about 72,911 calls every year. a school driver faces dui charges after being arrested on her way to pick up students. the california highway patrol says the driver was pulled over saturday evening after other drivers called 911 to report a school bus weaving through traffic and running cars off the road. the driver failed the sobriety test. she was on her way to pick up a high school debate team. that same driver had dropped off the students that morning.

she has been pleased on leave. well, we will soon find out who is up for the biggest awards in hollywood. oscar nominationing will be announced in less than an hour from now. the oh shall network is considered -- "the social network" is considered one of the top movies. we will go live to los angeles for the nominations when that comes up at 5:30. well, plans at a mexican restaurant are scrapped. what they wanted to serve that prompted several death threats. plus, taking a long rivalry to a new level. what happened to a chicago area man after he supported his home team's enemy.

talking or texting on a cell phone while driving. some are looking to take that ban further. lawmakers in new york and arkansas want to take action against pedestrians who are distracted by electronic gadgets. one proposal would ban the use of cell phones and ipods while crossing a street. violators would face a $100 fine. a pennsylvania woman fell right into a fountain while texting. it happened inside a mall. one minute she's walking along, here she is climbing out. she falls face first into the water. here it is again. the video has been viewed on youtube by almost a half a million people. 4:52 is the time. hopefully we won't catch you texting while trafficking. >> i think most people are too busy right now.

let's take a look at the traffic. westbound as you come up to the teleplay sa -- toll plaza. if you're driving across the bridge, you should find very nice traffic. also this morning, if you are driving in san francisco, northbound 101 traffic looks good. the road work has been picked up. if you're driving on the lower deck between san francisco and oakland, the right lane is still closed and about to be picking up those cones any moment now. if you are driving on the peninsula, highway 101 and 280 still at the speed limit, no trouble getting to the san francisco international airport. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. skies are clear. some patchy fog. otherwise, it's going to be another day close to what we've already had. some cold to cold lows, not as bad as yesterday so far. palo alto, i think i've seen

about eight or nine readings of 39. everybody is close. fairfield is the coolest. they have a little north wind, too. santa rosa has some fog. 39 in napa. low 40s. the reason why heyward is 48 is they have an east wind at 7 miles an hour. there is a component of an easterly or a north my breeze coming through -- northerly breeze through the delta. there is some very thick fog by modesto. everything continues to go way up and over. there is no sign of anything changing until maybe sunday and monday but it will probably be more clouds and cooler than anything else. i've seen some gusts, but on the surface it's on the quiet side. 60 to near 70 degrees. not a change until late in the weekend, early next week. >> all right.

a wisconsin towel maker is stuck in the middle of next month's super bowl matchup. now, his company produces the terrible towel be loved to steeler fans. the company's president says they are located in wisconsin. he's a big packers' fan. the packers got into the super bowl after defeating the chicago bears. that has spilled over to a car dealership. a salesman was actually fired for displaying his packers' pride on the job. the general manager said customers might be offended by his tie. >> he says take your tie off or you're fired. >> i said, can i just zip it up. no, you're fired, get out. >> but he might not be out of work for long, another dealership in the chicago area has offered him a job.

well, an arizona restaurant owner has decided to scrap his plan to offer african lion meet in tacos. the owner says he received threats against the safety of the restaurant, family members and even customers and vendors. he was going to start it next month, some of their past menu items have included frog legs. the city council will vote on a plan that will allow the city to hold its lunar festival. it would feature performances and the traditiional lion dance. if attention approved, it will be held on february 26th. in just 2 1/2 hours, a search will resume for a missing

elderly woman. he was abducted one week ago today. in a few hours, crews will be back into a canal following a lead in the case. but they plan to do it differently today.
