in the search for an abducted 4-year-old boy, moments ago, yet another car was pulled from the canal. we're getting the first information about what president obama is expected to say in his sate of the union address in the congress and the nation, tonight. a 90-year-old grandmother survived a night alone. why her family says they are relieved but not surprised by her strength.

good afternoon. topping our news this noontime, divers are back in the water of a central valley canal searching for a 4-year-old kidnapped boy. ktvu's ken pitch set on the scene mr. -- pritchett is on the scene. is this the car investigators are looking for, ken? >> reporter: victoria, it is not. they resumed their search this morning using sonar. they started right here at this gate you see behind me. they didn't make it more than about 100 yards downstream when they located that other object. a fifth car less than, as i said, about a hundred yards from that gate. there, you can see up on the bank how they towed that car there and yet again, it is a stolen vehicle, not connected with this case. this canal search was launched after following the abduction of the 4-year-old cardenas. his family says he was snatched from his grandmother's arms one

week ago by 27-year-old jose rodriguez, the exboyfriend of his mother. the search took place about two miles downstream from where a witness said he saw a car matching the suspects where a manned in drive into the delta canal. witness said he saw that 45 minutes after the abduction. this morning this stolen honda civic was pulled from the water. altogether, five cars and a pickup truck have been located in the canal since this search began last week. despite failing to find rodriguez' car the sheriff's department remains confident in the witness' statement. >> we also have physical evidence that backs imwhat the witness said -- on what the witness sate. we do have tire tracks that match what he saw, what he said. we also have other physical evidence as far as a broken buoy that goes across the waterway that was intact the day of the kidnapping and the following day was broken.

>> reporter: the sheriff's department says that they in addition to that, there has been no cell phone usage or credit card usage by the suspect. that was not the case shortly before the abduction. from here, the sheriff's department will continue their search downstream here on the canal. in fact, they have two teams working right now, one about 2 miles from where those tracks were seen, and another team searching even farther down the delta canal, about eight miles from our location. ken pritchett, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> you can see our interview with the suspect's mother. just look for the cardenas tab at ktvu.com. an investigation is underway in san francisco into the overnight double shooting that left a young man dead and another with live-threatening

injuries. it happened after a fight broke out in the 1,600 block of kirkwood avenue. that's in the city's bay view neighborhood. the victim's names have not been released, but police say both are between 18 and 20 years old. so far no arrests have been made. late this morning mayor kwan launched oakland's now community and policing program. the youth safe haven program is designed to reduce crime and increase students' success in the student's haven court community which is one of oakland's highest crime area. it is a gent effort between the city, police and the oakland unified school district. students will participate in active is, receive help from home work and learn life skills. city and school officials say this is yet another way they are working together to reduce crime and increase student success. >> we're gonna work with kids who are probably on the edge of

deciding are they gonna stay in school or not stay in school, annecy tell you as a foreman school board member, when we have afterschool programs crime in the neighborhood goes down 40%. >> the program will begin at two elementary schools and two middle schools. a 90-year-old woman is recovering after being lost and out in the cold for 24 hours. ktvu's allyrasmus is live. >> reporter: about a mile downhill from where we're stabbing is where the 90 -- standing is where the 90-year- old was found safe and found this morning. she had been missing more than 24 hours when two drivers on the trail saw her. >> we started hearing crackling. all of a sudden this little asian woman with a walking stick that i put over there, i carried it up with me, came out

of the woods. i realized instantly that -- instantly that she was the woman that was missing. >> reporter: that walking stick is the only thing she had with her when she was found. they say she was in very good condition after spending the night alone with no food or water for 24 hours. >> well, i was happy that she was so strong. she had this walking stick. she didn't seem desperate. she just seemed in good shape. i was like amazed. i hope i'm ke she is at 91. >> reporter: her family said he just turned 90 years old in november but that nothing stopped her from taking her daily morning walks. when she didn't come home yesterday morning, the police and search and rescue crew launched an exhaustive search. then at 8:00 this morning, a in the case. police whisked her son away to take him to where his mother was waiting. >> i did not scream. i said oh, what a relief.

that's my reaction. >> reporter: her family says she is no strange tore long journeys. 60 years ago she fled hong kong with her six children in a boat. her granddaughter says she a survivor but they think she will be a little more cautious next time she goes out on her own. >> you think she will go out for a walk again tomorrow? >> no. she told my husband she will never walk again. >> reporter: even though she appear to be in good condition, emergency crews still took her to the hospital just as a precaution. her family says they expect to pick her prudent person the hospital later on this afternoon. ktvu, channel 2 news. >> thank you ally. state by state unemployment numbers came out today showing california with the second highest jobless rate in the country. the labor department says california is one of 20 states where unemployment is higher in december. it is now at 12.5%. unemployment dropped in another 15 state and stayed the same

for the rest. most economist expect hiring to pick up this year, although the unemployment rate will likely remain high. nevada, by the way has the highest unemployment rate in the country at 14 and a half%. a white house official says president obama will call for a five year freeze in discretionary spending during tonight's state of the union address. the president is expected to talk about a wide variety of topics from job creation to the republican effort to repeal health care. the unnamed source says the spending freeze is reportedly part of a deficit reduction plan along with a five year proposal to save $78 billion in defense spending. >> looking forward to the president and his remarks that perhaps really can do about trying to cut spending in washington. i think you will hear the president as we've discussed spend most of his time talking about the economy. >> there will be a symbolic show of unity with more than

two dozen lawmakers sitting with members of the opposite party. a new poll indicates president obama may have a more optimistic audience for his address tonight. the new cnn opinion research poll finds 56 of americans believe things are going badly. that's actually better than the 71% who felt that way back in different 43% feel things are going well, and is up 14 points from just last month. the owners of the penny ice creamery in santa cruz have been invited to stick with the first lady. they sent this you tube video thanking the president for stimulus money that allowed them to open their business last august. he told us he still can't believe all of this is happening. you can watch the speech right here live on ktvu channel 2. starts at 6:00. the speech will also be

streamed live on ktvu.com. california lawmakers get to fill up their cars for free despite our huge budget crisis. today's chronicle reports tax payers paid the bill for state issued gas credit cards. last year the gas bill was $208,000 for state assembly numbers and $86,000 for the state senate. reportedly california is the only state that still has this perk for state lawmakers. man accused of pointing a laser at two pilots last night was arrested are by san jose police. a police helicopter tracked the suspect after a pilot of a small plane reported the laser attack. authorities say the suspect also pointed the laser at the police helicopter. that helped officers find the suspect a home on pipe dream court. just days ago the faa reported the u.s. laser strike incidents doubled last year and the bay area airport are among the top ten. russian's president is vowing to find and punish those

responsible for the airport bombing that killed 35 and injured more than 100. surveillance video from the airport released today shows the moment of the explosion yesterday. the suicide bomber is said to have used a homemade device stuffed with small metal objects to make it more deadly. the victims include travelers from britain, germany and bulgaria. no claim of responsibility has been made. a lot of legal drama late this morning concerning the former white house chief of staff campaign to be chicago mayor. some bay area firefighter just revealed the new i phone app, how it could help save lives. meteorologist rose marie russell will be there to show us if we will have any fog problems. it could drive me out of san francisco. that's according to one

today the illinois supreme court ordered chicago election officials not to print any mayoral ballots without we manual's name while the

justices consider whether to hear the appeal. yesterday a state pail lat court ruling tossed him out of the race saying he -- appellate court ruling tossed him out of the race saying he did not meet the one year requirement to run. election day is february 22nd. however, early voting begins monday. we manual who is --. a school bus driver is on leave after she was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. the california highway patrol says the driver was pulled over saturday evening while on her way to pick up a high school debate team. the driver called 911 to report the school bus weaving. the bus driver failed the sobriety test and was taken to jail. another driver had to be sent to pick the debate team up. >> the speech teacher gathered around and said i have something to tell you.

our bus driver just got pulled over for a dui. >> the same driver dropped off the students that morning. the district says they are currently investigating. the fire prevention district is launching a new i phone application that will help save lives. district officials unvailed the fire department app this morning. it is designed to send an alert to citizens who know cpr about a cardiac emergency. officials say it could make the difference between life and death for the victim if citizens are closer to the emergency location than firefighters. the new application offers an unprecedenced level of public safety. by dispatching cpr trained citizens to cardiac emergencies occurring nearby. >> the application is available for free on the tunes -- on the i tunes store today. it'll only for the fire district, but the district is working on ways to adapt this application for use in

communities across the nation and around the globe. one san francisco neighborhood is spearheading a new fight against trash. ktvu's tera moriarti has the marketing gimmick that some call alberto nuisance, but business owners say it's their livelihood. >> reporter: they clutter up your doorstep. >> trash, garbage. not very green. >> they wind up in my recycle bin. >> reporter: flyers from restaurants. people in san francisco's marina district say the so called handbills are trashing their sidewalks, bushes and gutters, and now they want tougher regulations. >> the ones with rubber bands are pretty sturdy, but the ones that are left on the doorstep could blow away and those people who distribute them could face a $100 fine. >> reporter: don't tell that to this man. he's been running his mom and pop cleaning business for 16 years now. >> if they enforce the law i

those models aren't really in much agreement. high pressure continuing throughout today. we're breezy in the hills. the north as well as the east bay hills reporting some pretty gusty conditions. grizzly peek reporting gusts of 40 miles per hour at times. right around naapa as well as lifermore. livermore reporting breeze of up to about 20 miles an hour. the rest of us with light winds for today. the foothills expected to see those wednesdays continuing. i'll run you through your tuesday. no problems when it comes to the wind. northeasterly wind continuing to bring the fog from the valley into the east bay. concord, now with hazy sunshine. visibility down to a quarter of a mile. fairfield, still reporting quite a bit of dense fog. in the next hour we're expected to clear out pretty good, but it will be back tomorrow morning. for the afternoon, just a few high clouds moving through. outside of that we're looking

stocks are down today due to disappointing earnings from blue chip. johnson and johnson. that's prompting investors to pause in a recent rally we've seen on wall street. nasdq down 7. dow down 37. s and p down 3 and a half. target will open one of its

two new east bay stores inless than a month from now. target says the store will open on march 6th. a new target store in will open in october. both of those stores could mean up to 500 new jobs in the east bay. mcdonald's could be changing its menu in the coming months. the part that has the pricing on it. mcdonald's blames increasing food cost. the fast food chain says it could be paying more than 2 and a half% more for beef, bread and vegetable this is year. the company said it will rely on increased sales to help absorb some of the cost. east bay bike riders may soon be spending a lot f time under the bike tracks. leaders want to build a bike path between oakland and award. it's called the east bay green way -- award. it will be all the way south
