if we can now go to news chopper 2 which is now flying over the scene, there's a large house which has been the focus of the last hour. a man was shot by police. officers encountered a man on the property and for some reason they opened fire killing the man. i asked what kind of weapons did the suspect have? >> it is unknown at this point what types of weapons, the investigation is still ongoing. as we speak we have our csi team out on scene diligently collecting any and all pieces of evidence that we can find. >> what caused officers to open fire on him? >> that is still under investigation. >> reporter: at this point this is a sheriff's department investigation. so san jose police department is not saying anything on what

happened or how many of its officers were involved in the shooting. we will be staying on top of this story and as soon as we get any information we'll bring it to you. lloyd lacuesta, ktvu channel 2 news. the search resumed today for that missing 4-year-old boy from patterson, dive teams searched more of the delta mendota canal. they found more cars but not the car they are searching for. ken pritchett is live, is that search still going on. >> reporter: it is sit stáeul going -- it is still going on and in the last hour they found another object. you should believe able to see the outline of a concrete structure. that's the water of the delta mendota canal flowing under that structure. the strong currents have that object stuck under that structure. we have shown you car after car

being pulled from this canal in this search. nine cars so far, as you said they have not found the car they are looking for. >> after a two daybreak, search teams resumed use of a sonar submersible after and a few minutes another hit. a driver entered a cold dark water. the result -- >> another car that our dive team pulled out of the water, it's a 94 honda reported stolen october 25th of last year out of newman. >> reporter: they are looking for this car, a toyota carolla captured in videos before the abduction of juliani cardenas. he was snatched from his grandmother's arms by jose martinez. a witness said he saw a car matching the suspect's with a man and child inside drive into the canal 45 minutes after the abduction. but today, the same pattern continues, two stolen cars, a truck and a motorcycle were pulled from the canal.

yet the sheriff's department says they are still confident in the witnesses account. >> we also have other physical evidence in a broken buoy on the day of the kidnapping but the following day was broken. >> reporter: the object that they are investigating right now is five miles downstream from the original search location where that witness says he saw that car go into the canal. the dive team sheriff's department says that they have searched much of the water between this point in the original scene, however there are areas they have not checked and they will be back tomorrow. near patterson in stanislaus county, ken pritchett. back in 1998 authorities drained a 50-mile stretch of the canal and pulled out 150 vehicles. police have also pulled out

break in that homicide investigation stemming from a fire in san francisco. police have two new pieces of key information. david stevenson has the story. >> reporter: and this afternoon we learned about the homicide victim as well as details about the man, this man that police say killed her. >> i'm glad they got him. i'm glad they got him because he did not deserve to die like that. >> reporter: sadness along san francisco's rose court after we informed him of an arrest of a woman who's body was burned beyond recognition. we first showed you picture of the fire yesterday. san francisco police announced they had arrested almond johnson of sacramento. police say at least a dozen investigators worked the case and took johnson into custody last night in san francisco. >> there's a lot of hard work being done quite frankly, i

think the unit that worked last night just got into bed about an hour and a half, two hours ago. >> reporter: police say that johnson drove into the car of herr era and drove into san francisco. >> there's family members that reside in san francisco. he had been here, he was familiar enough with the area. we believe that's why possibly he drove here. >> reporter: we went this morning to a san francisco address listed for almond johnson that's just about a mile away from the crime scene. no one answered the door. the exact cause of vanessa herr era's death may take weeks to determine. david stevenson. >> vanessa herr era's death is the tenth killing in san francisco for this year.

they say nine of the killings are now beinginvestigated as homicide. one was deemed a justifiable death and no charges will be filed. police add that only one of the killings is believed to be gang related. we are now just one hour away from the president's state of the union address. we want to show you a live look inside statuary hall on capitol hill where congress is gathering right now before heading into the chambers for the speech. in a show of unity, some lawmaker are breaking from tradition and will sit next to members of the other party for the speech. the white house released this picture of the president preparing for the speech. the president is to call for a five year freeze on nonsecurity discretionary spending. he will also ask lawmakers to work together to help the economy grow and create new

sure of what all this national attention might bring. republicans speakers of the house john boehner says the country wants the president to do two things, cut spending and create jobs. >> i'm hopeful that the president is listening to the american people. >> the gop pushed through a nonbinding resolution in the house to set a cap on spending for the remainder of the physical year at 2008 levels. that's before the stimulus and bail out plan. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle want the president to say how he plans to create jobs. carol han has the story.

announced a huge hiring spree for this year. google will hire more rkers in google is not specified how many of the new jobs will be based in the united states but that's where most of the current workers are located. analysts expect google's net revenue to increase more than 20% this year. just the opposite situation for yahoo where more lay offs were announced today. the company is cutting another 200 to 250 jobs. yahoo says the cuts will affect company offices worldwide and that it will continue to hire people for positions that support key priorities. just released numbers that show san francisco is one of the places that will start home

prices from sliding. the year to year november numbers for san francisco showed a slight increase. other mayor cities mostly -- major cities november prices hit the lowest points since the market bubble burst. and after news of mediocre earnings, it was a positive day on wall street today. the dow was down a little more than three points closing at 11,977. the nasdaq was up almost two points closing at 2,719. analysts say that news from britain and news from johnson & johnson kept the market in check. >> a lot of people enjoying this nice warm weather. let's go to chief meteorologist bill martin who has news for tomorrow. >> it's been a nice day for most of us. temperatures in thsome 70s. as we go into tomorrow that fog is going to come back. here it is about lunchtime. i just want you to see all the

a south bay company that makes street lights says it is doing big business in china.

the echelon organization can save money by dimming street lights. one of the biggest companies in china plans to install a half million of the lights over the next three years. the company says it hopes the technology will lower energy needs by more than 50%. the san francisco supervisor today introduced resolution hoping to block the sale of college radio station kusf. >> who's station? >> our station. >> supporters of the station protesting outside city hall today just before the board of supervisors meeting. they were also on hand to hear supervisor ross mucarini introduce the motion to rescind the sale. >> i think it is important that even though we recognize the limits of our authority and our reach that we don't stand silent when we think a mistake of this magnitude has occurred.

just inside statuary hall on capitol hill tonight. that's where lawmakers are making their way to the house chambers just half an hour away now. the president's second state of union address. and in just the last hour, the white house has begun releasing exerts from the president's speech indicate that he will be asking for bipartisanship. we have another live picture for you this time looking live outside the white house. president barack obama is expected to leave capitol hill for his second state of the union address. lawmakers are making their way inside just minutes before the speech. both parties certainly different ideas on how to solve the nation's capital charges.

they have agreed tonight to a show of unify. kids who stay in school are less likely to get involved with crime. that's a new reason for a program just going into effect at schools in oakland. rob roth is at one of those schools with more tonight on how this is going to work. >> reporter: that new program is going on right now here at the four schools that share the havens court campus. in the past hour we got a look inside. >> favorite fruit? >> reporter: students from futures and community united elementary schools are beginning a program named at keeping them safe from the mean streets. the program is called youth save haven and police officers are serving as some of the mentors. >> it's proven that people who do go to school, attend school

are less likely to become victims in crimes or commit crimes. so i think we're going to put a lot of effort into making this program work. >> reporter: also serving as mentors will be high school students including sophomore akeem hayes, akeem says he knows exactly what happens on the streets he says he used to be part of the problem. some may have parents in jail, others may have behavioral or academic problems. the hope is to set them on the right path before they get too far down the wrong road. >> to have something positive to go to and then you won't have time for trouble. >> there's been a lot of shootings in this neighborhood, a lot of drug dealing in this neighborhood, we want to make schools a play safe, a safe alternative for young people in this neighborhood. >> reporter: oakland police will also be stepping up patrols in the neighborhood surrounding the schools as an

additional buffer zone. the program is funded by a grant from the eisenhower foundation. rob roth, ktvu news. next week governor jerry brown is set to deliver his first state of the state address since taking office this month. with california mired in a $40 million deficit, governor brown is expected to focus on the deficit. orange county lawmakers wants california to accept it's own ious. joel anderson introduced legislation that will force california to accept the state issued ious. bill lochlear have warned ious may be a possibility this spring. the work will be done in union square, and sal castaneda

billion and is expected to be completed in 2019. until then, many fear that tunnels undersan francisco's busiest streets will cause headaches. >> just like when areas were build in part. >> having the construction will be a pain, but at the end of the day it'll be worth it having more transportation around the city. >> reporter: you're looking at a life look at stockton street. it is very busy. if you can imagine one lane being taken out of here it is going to cause a huge traffic jam. the work starts monday. the best way to avoid traffic jams is to use public transportation. live in san francisco, sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. caltranss has reached another milestone on highway 1. crews have now finished excavating the new tunnel.

the work began back in 2007. caltrans removed some 314,000 cubic yard of rock, clay and rock from inside the tunnels. they should be finished and ready for traffic by early next year. tonight dramatic video shows that explosion as it happened in an airport in russia. this surveillance video shows the exact moment of the explosion. in all 35 people were killed, 180 others were injure at this point no one has claimed responsibility but russia's president and prime minister today both promised revenge on those responsible. former white house chief of staff rahm emanuel is back on the ballot at least for now. the supreme court issued a stay after yesterday's decision. the high court said if ballots are printed at this point they

police are looking for whoever left a suspicious package with bomb written on it. police evacuated near by homes. however it turned out to be a hoax. the bomb squads remote control robot opened the package and found that it was filled with cups of instant noodle soups and other harmless items. 24-year-old steven p atrilli was driving a mini van that slammed into a police patrol. patrilli was run pittsburgh

application only works in the san ramon valley. but the association of fire chiefs is working to duplicate it all across the country. it'll soon cost more to grab a bite. mcdonalds says it will raise prices on some of their items. mcdonalds says it won't hike prices across the board adding it doesn't want to turn off customers who depend on the chain's affordable prices. target plans to open a new store. the first opening is planned for the old home expo location. a target spokeswoman says about 200 people have been hired to work there. that oakland store is scheduled to open march fifth and another store in east dublin will open sometime in october. a just released study suggests obesity and smoking is a reason why the u.s. has a lower life expectancy rates

we now know the identity of a man arrested last night for striking an airplane with a laser beam. the pilot notified police who then responded with a search helicopter which was then also hit with a beam. the helicopter crew was able to direct officers to a home on pipe dream court. he is facing two felony counts with interfering with an aircraft. he could also face federal charges. >> if you have a pilot that is struck with a laser beam and his eyesight is in any way damaged during that time, it could obviously have catastrophic consequences. >> bay area airports are among the top 10 targeted. people in one san francisco neighborhood say they are fed up with seeing flyers that often turn into litter on their doorsteps and they have plans

advisory in the central valley. we will get a little bit of fog in here as well. fog will show up late tonight, early tomorrow morning. we had it in concord, in clayton. i think we will see a little bit more of that. it's not a big deal. i don't think we'll see dense advisory, just fog early in the morning. what we're looking at is a pretty stagnant pattern that allow it is fog to form. the weather systems are heading well to the north and that's where they're going to stay really right into friday and saturday. the fog kind of works it's way into the area late tonight, early tomorrow morning. and you see the jet stream there it goes way to the north. that's what's keeping us dry. when this thing starts to dip down on saturday. you notice the clouds start to increase a little bit. those clouds start to bring a sprinkle to parts of the north of the state. and then the bigger chance of more obvious fog in the central valley. so travel through the central valley. nights and mornings can be an issue. i know a lot of you driving up

to sacramento or up toward davis or south toward fresno, you're going to bump into it. if you might hold up just a little bit, it might give you a little more visibility. forecast highs tomorrow, you will see the cool air in the delta area right because that has access to the fog. and warmer around the bay, back into the upper 60s. even low 70s possible. and there's your 67 in los cados. 68 in san jose. warm one to it today. five day forecast shapes up like this. dry one right through the weekend with maybe some clouds. for sure clouds or maybe some sprinkles falling out of those clouds. >> we showed a picture of a man chipping the ice off his car. and then you see what we have here. >> we need the rain. we'll get some rain but it's not going to happen this week.

kids are all right, 127 hours, winter's bone and toy story iii. toy story iii nomination marks the third time in history that a animated movie is nominated for an oscar and it was made right here in the bay area. cook spoke to the producer and now oscar nominee darla anderson who said she felt a lot of pressure while making that movie, especially because toy story ii didn't do so well among critics. anderson said she and her team just focused on telling the story right. >> when we make our films for everyone. we don't make them just for kids. i think they resinate with everybody. we use the same tools as other movie makers and same story
