with sal. steve, you're not kidding about that fog. we're looking at an unfoggy picture of 237. the fog is out there in eastern contra costa county. and driving through it may be difficult. this is the morning when you need to give yourself an extra few minutes. 6:01. back to dave and pam. investigators have a new clue this morning in the search for the missing 4-year-old from patterson. we're live from the store that may help police track down tire marks found at a canal in patterson. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. we've learned this morning that the owner of this tire, auto and repair shop gave authorities a new clue in this baffling abduction case. he bought four new tires from the shop a year and a half ago. the co-owner had a receipt from the purchases back in april of 2009. authorities spoke to the owner last friday. last tuesday an amber alert was

issued for rodriguez's 2003 silver toyota corolla seen here at a station an hour before the abduction. he's accused of kidnapping the 4-year-old just after buying alcohol here. authorities have not been able to compare toyota tire treads to those around the time of the abduction near the delta canal because rodriguez had oversized aluminum tire rims and a spare on his tire. divers have pulled nine vehicles from the canal and have only compared with one of the tire treads found because of the similar description to the corolla. last night the family held a candle light vigil. the mother tells those who gathered she's still convinced her son is not in the canal. she continues to make pleas to her ex-boyfriend to drop her son off. no questions asked. more than 100 people came out to show their support last night. >> i think it's beautiful. wonderful. i have so much support from everybody. >> reporter: she showed us the

sonogram of her unborn daughter conceived with rodriguez before their break up. the baby is due in a month. we know this morning volunteers will continue to pass out fliers and the strongest lead so far a farm hand's account of a car rolling into the canal after the abduction. the search begins back there around 9:00 a.m. this morning. we'll take you there in just about an hour. reporting live, jade hernandez. ktvu channel 2 news. an overnight fire sent thick smoke into the skies above downtown alameda. it started shortly after 1:00 a.m. on alameda avenue. crews from both alameda and oakland were able to quickly control the flames in an empty building under construction. major damage but no one was hurt. investigators are still looking for the cause. time now 6:04. a local union leader is found dead inside of his home and oakland police are treating this as a homicide. tara moriarty just spoke with a neighbor about this shocking discovery. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. we did speak to a neighbor just a few minutes ago and he says

that the last time he saw berry bingham was alive was last weekful he says that the man was walking down the street. friendly guy. waved, said hello and walked into his townhouse here off of henry street. he also mentioned that police did remove bingham's car which was parked right in front of his home. now bingham's son knew something was wrong yesterday when he couldn't get a hold of his father for quite some time. he called his dad's office and had some co-workers check out his home. they found the door open. they knocked. but no answer. around 11:30 yesterday morning police found the body of the 64- year-old which has suffered trauma. authorities will not say at this point how bingham was killed. bingham was a jamaican native. he was the political director of 1021 which represents public workers in the city of oakland, alameda county and bart employees. he was a deacon at his church, first african-american elected to the alameda school board and divorced with three children. now a union leader told ktvu

bingham's life was "dedicated to service and rebuilding the community." he was an amazing man with a huge energy. he was much loved. bingham's death is the 12th homicide in oakland. and police are offering a $10,000 reward if you have any information that may lead to the killer or killers, you are asked to contact oakland police. live in oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. this morning toyota is recalling more than a quarter million of its luxury brand cars here in the u.s. this is a new recall because of possible leaks in the fuel system. several lexus models built for north america are involved. they include the 2006 and 2007 lexus gs300 and 350 models, 2006 through 20 09d model year lexus is250s and 2006 through 2008 is350s. dealers will conduct free inspections and repair any potential problems. speaking of cars, let's

check in with sal. our commute is i'm assuming a wait now. >> that's right. this morning pg&e crews are still on the scene of the deadly crash we first saw on ktvu. that followed a police chase yesterday's crash kept a strange series of events including two vehicles stolen from the same woman. she spotted her subaru hours after it had been stolen from outside her house. at the same time she also saw her pickup truck. she wasn't even clear that had been stolen until she saw it being driven. >> an officer got behind the pickup truck and activated the lights and sirens. and somewhere while on pursuit the officer lost sight of that vehicle. >> now unfortunately that driver smashed into a power pole and was crushed to death. he died on the scene. pg&e crews are still working to

repair the power lines that came down as part of the crash. traffic still being diverted. by the way we found out that power to many of the residents in that area will be out until 5:00 p.m. looking at the bay bridge toll plaza now. traffic is still light. this is around the time that the traffic begins to change in about ten minutes or so they're going to turn the metering lights on. san francisco northbound 101 the traffic looks pretty good approaching the 80 split. this morning's commute on westbound 92 san mateo bridge looks good. dumbarton also looking good. in the south bay traffic looking good. sensors are relatively clear. thank you, sir. we can slice the forecast right in half. coast, peninsula, south bay possible record highs. north bay, east bay foggy, foggy. no rain. that's for sure. little mist in some of that fog. the fog advisory takes us until 11:00 a.m. and it is very foggy. some of the tweets coming in sp weather by the way.

super foggy, you name it. you can't see hardly at all. but for others it's a clear morning and there are some very mild lows. i'll show you some here in a second. lingering fog in the afternoon. hazy sun and mostly sunny. cool to warm. anywhere close to that fog upper 50s, low 60s. without it upper 60s to low 70s and possibility of record highs. but that dense fog advisory again out north bay and east bay windy up in the hills. it's an ease breeze coming back in from the valley. east-northeast at fairfield and east-northeast was at oakland but that will be a warm one. they had a record high yesterday downtown 72 oakland. mountain view 70 was a record and sfo at 68 also a record. same song and dance for those folks again today. 52 san francisco. redwood city 48. low 50s around woodside and san mateo. there's some very balmy conditions. you're already in the mild category. but for others it's a cold foggy morning. satellite where's the rain, it's not even close to us and i

don't see any for a while. but i do see a lot of fog. if you add that fog the visibility is terrible. dense fog advisory. cold in that fog. windy up in the hills but record highs possible for some. especially from oakland, richmond, san francisco south. but antioch, brentwood, now it's warm. san mateo upper 60s, low 70s for some. even santa cruz, half-moon bay, morgan hill. cooler still okay towards livermore and pleasanton. foggy or sunny. zero visibility and wind in the east bay hills gusting 25 to 30 miles an hour and this is the pattern. what you see is what you get all the way into saturday probably cooler by sunday though. well, google plans to expand its work force before the end of th year. the mountain view based company announced it will add 6200 workers to the payroll at several locations around the world. google says it wants to expand its new technologies. analysts say that could mean the new jobs will come from

acquiring other companies, not necessarily from hiring. time now 6:10. we want to take you live right hospital. a protest is happening as we speak. these are live pictures out there. you're seeing this as we see it. you can see a line of people out there with protest signs. now this is the second day in a row that unemployed construction workers are staging a work stoppage. they're trying to shut down a construction job at the hospital. the workers say they think they've been unfairly excluded and they pledge they're going to shut down ucsf construction until they get a fair share of the work. again, our cameras are panning around live. you're seeing this protest as we see it for the first time. we'll bring you more details from what's happening out there as we get them. all right. could definitely cause a lot of problems down there. >> yeah. well, in his state of the union address president obama says the u.s. needs to step up its game. >> at stake is whether new jobs and industries take root in this country or somewhere else.

egypt. biggest demonstrations in years. demanding end of 30 years of rule. thousands of riot police fired rubber bullets and tear gas at these demonstrators. two of the protesters and a police officer were killed in these nationwide protests. they were inspired by all of the recent up risings in tones ya. activists are using facebook and twitter to organize these demonstrations. well, president obama heads to a green energy plant in wisconsin this morning. ktvu's allison burns reports he's trying to keep the focus on future technology. that was a key part of last night's state of the union address. good morning, allison. >> reporter: good morning to you, pam. that's rite. it was president obama's most explicit call yet for innovation. and he repeatedly declared america's need to win the future. his challenge today bringing a divided congress together to do it. >> mr. speaker, the president of the united states. seriously disagree with you about afghanistan. bring that money home. >> reporter: and as for that five year freeze on nonsecurity spending, republicans here on capitol hill say they want many more cuts. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. and our channel 2 website at ktvu.com you will also find extended clips of the president's address as well as the full text. just look for the u.s. and world news tab. well, during his state of the union address, the president called attention to arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords' empty seat in the chamber. and many members of congress wore black and white ribbons to honor the tucson shooting victims. giffords' husband, astronaut mark kelly, was invited to the state of the union speech but instead he watched it in the hospital at his wife's side. this morning giffords is being transferred to a new rehabilitation center. her condition has been upgraded from serious to good. time now 6:17.

a ban on beards has now drawn civil rights groups into a legal battle over whether the state can stop a man from becoming a prison guard. he's a seek-american wears a beard for religious reasons. he says the ban is discriminatory. now he's suing the department of corrections. attorney general harris supports the beard ban which took effect in 2004. she says it's impossible to properly fit him for a gas mask that would fit over his beard. and she wants that lawsuit dismissed. civil rights groups have sent a letter to the attorney general asking her to reconsider. a hearing is now scheduled for april 19th. well, a new report concludes a dramatic increase in spending on prison inmate health in california has not improved conditions for sick and injured prisoners. an assembly committee found that prison health care spending has grown by more than 65% since 2006. one of the most disturbing discoveries according to committee members is that paid

a total of $27 million to do construction planning for medical facilities that were never built. today three bay area mayors will join mayors from other california cities to pressure governor brown to change his mind about plans to eliminate redevelopment agencies. san francisco mayor ed lee, oakland major jean quan and san jose mayor reed will meet at 2:00 this afternoon with the governor in sacramento. the mayors say about 300,000 construction jobs are supported by redevelopment agencies every year. all right. your time now 6:19. let's get you to where you need to go. sal, i know you're looking at the toll plaza and everything else. >> dave and pam, i look at it about this time every day because this is when it starts to change. sometimes the metering lights in fact i think they have come on. you're going to start seeing a bigger crowd here at the toll plaza. doesn't mean anything's wrong. just means they want to keep the crowds off the bridge itself and having basically have them wait here. we have to wait at the toll

we are learning more about a fatal officer-involved shooting in santa clara county. it happened yesterday after police officers, sheriff deputies and helicopters all converged on a home in the foothills east of san jose. the homeowner had reported there was a suspicious man on his property. officers then confronted the suspect in a creek just outside the home. one neighborhood witnessed a very tense scene. >> heard what sounded like a pop, pop. which is to me a gunshot. >> sheriff deputies tell us that the man had a knife and threatened officers but investigators have not yet released his name. time now 6:22. starting today the first donation checks are expected to go out to the victims of the san bruno pipeline explosion. the city will hand out $6,000 checks to the residents living in each of 38 homes that were destroyed in that disaster. now the owners of homes that sustained moderate damage will get $4,000. those with minor damage will

get $1,000. critics complained the city waited too long to hand out nearly $400,000 in donation money. in the meantime a san francisco woman who try today cash in on the disaster has now been sentenced to a month in jail. yesterday the 24-year-old pleaded guilty to posing as a pipeline victim just four days after that explosion. she told relief workers she wanted everything they had to offer including free hotel rooms. three other people have been convicted of posing as disaster victims. keep an eye on yahoo stock this morning after yesterday's closing bell the company announced its fourth quarter earnings more than doubled but revenue for the period fell 12% compared to the same time period in 2009. yahoo also forecast net revenue in the first quarter of this year could drop by as much as 10%. yahoo also announced it is laying off 150 workers. and that's in addition to 600 other employees last month. verizon is now stepping back a bit from its earlier

a snow boarding accident on lake tahoe. the 22-year-old died saturday when she crashed into a ski lift tower at the resort. placer county authorities say she was sitting on the snow board riding it like a sled. she became turned around. that's when she crashed. she was planning to go to law school. just hours from now the 27th annual macworld convention opens. the public won't be allowed until tomorrow, but the latest gadgets for all apple products will be on display for the media later this morning. apple pulled out of the expo two years ago but nearly everyone else who has a connection to anything apple will be there. the number of exhibitors is up 10% with larger than usual crowds expected. that show runs through saturday. time now 6:28. a search is underway for a high school english teacher who did not show up for class. the mysterious message she left behind in her classroom. >> reporter: i'm tara moriarty live in oakland where a popular union leader is killed.

ktvu's tara moriarty spoke with a neighbor about the last time he saw mr. berry alive. tara, what else did you hear? >> reporter: neighbors say they hadn't seen him for days. now what happened with his son sensed something was up. he contacted some of his dad's co-workers to check up on him. there were unusual signs from the start. they noticed this door was open. they knocked and received no answer. when they looked in the street they noticed berry's car was indeed parked right in front of his townhouse. after calling 911, police then arrived around 11:30. they found bingham's body inside of his house off of henry street. the 64-year-old had suffered trauma but police will not say at this point how he was killed. they are treating this case as a homicide. they will not say if the killing was random or if bingham was targeted. >> this area here is real quiet. really quiet. this is the first thing we've had on this street in the 20

recovering at highland hospital. the gunman escaped on a bicycle. police say that gunman may be responsible for another armed hold up in oakland earlier in the evening. a search will resume at a central valley canal in just about an hour and a half looking for clues and kidnapped victim. according to one local report, deputies are now investigating a receipt for tires purchased in 2009 by suspect jose rodriguez. the receipt shows the brand of tires. and that could help investigators matctire tracks found near the canal. yesterday divers pulled out two more cars and a motorcycle and a truck. >> they've located nine vehicles so far and none have been the vehicles we've been looking for. it's definitely frustrating for them. they don't want to give up. >> deputies say the strongest leads so far is a witness who says he saw a car go into the canal that matches the

description of rodriguez's silver toyota corolla. ktvu's jade hernandez is in patterson this morning following this investigation. she will have more on the latest clues in a live report coming up on mornings on 2. song and prayers last night for the 4-year-old's safe return. more than 100 people gathered in patterson for an emotional candle light vigil. the boy's mother tells us she does not believe her son will be found in that canal. she's convinced her ex- boyfriend is out in the community somewhere and she's pleading for him to release her little boy at a safe location. time now 6:35. san francisco police say the shooting of a 9-year-old boy saturday afternoon was not a targeted shooting. police found the young man on turk street. he was shot in his stomach. he was rushed to the hospital and he is expected to survive. investigators believe the shooting was either an accident or something else. but they're not sure if he shot himself or if he was hit by a

stray bullet. well, a city taking a tougher stance against local massage businesses. the city council passed an ordinance that will require massage therapists to get a permit from the police department. it will also require them to have educational credentials and be in good standing with a professional organization. this ordinance follows a november arrest of five women arrested on prostitution charges. this morning volunteers will fan out through contra costa county to tally the county's homeless. the census takes place every two years. now that data is collected and used to track homelessness. it also helps the county secure federal funds for homeless programs. solano county is also starting a homeless count today that will start at noon and will continue through a 24 hour period. those expected to participate include homeless service providers, church organizations and for the first time public officials will take part. time now 6:36. sal, so far so good.

you've been busy, but so far so good. >> that's right. it hasn't been all that bad although we are getting more slow downs for sure now as you come up on the freeways here. no major problems this morning if you are driving at the bay bridge toll plaza. the commute looks pretty good as a matter of fact with the traffic looking good getting into the city. as we look at san francisco itself northbound 101 traffic moving along very nicely coming into the 80 split with no major issues. if you are driving southbound 101 to the airport it is a nice drive. and this morning from livermore over to castro valley not a big delay, a little slowing in castro valley across the bay and then traffic looks good. 6:37. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. tweets pouring in this morning. information yesterday sfo was 68. i see no reason why those areas won't have more record highs. but dense fog in the north and east bay which is really tough. high pressure's here.

i don't see any change through problem early february at least february 4th or 5th. we should look for some rain but i can't find any on the seven or ten day outlooks and even beyond that. after that it gets to be in the fantasy category. but still nothing showing any rain here. foggy north and east bay. cool to very warm for january. i mean this pattern if it was june, july or august we'd be hot. but for january it's warm for some. more of the same hazy, sun, warm, but the fog's not going anywhere. clouds cooler monday. no rain expected. i don't see anything coming through. but they're coming through especially from the strait it's fog and a lot of it. and the visibility mainly east bay north bay lousy. i mean zero for some. so that fog advisory takes us until 11:00. east wind at fairfield has been a little easterly breeze also concord and east-northeast at oakland means 70-degree temperatures today. that's a down slope wind for them coming right off the scald cot there are gusts over 30 miles an hour. oakland yesterday 72.

record high mountain view 70 record high. sfo was 68. pencil those in again for today. 40s for some 30s for others and 50s upper 40s and 50s very mild conditions. especially peninsula. also along the coast and in san francisco at 52 degrees already. yeah. up and over. ridge of high pressure doesn't have a snowball's chance of making it. dense fog inland valleys will take us for another dry week as the storm track stays to the north. but now that that fog's here i don't think it's going anywhere. upper 50s oakly, brentwood, concord 64. 70 though for richmond oakland 72 hayward 71 degrees. and then low 70s san jose, santa clara valley, redwood city, santa cruz, not as warm but still a little better pleasanton and livermore. pleasanton 68. foggy for some. zero for others. windy in the hills. 58 to 72 on the highs. no change in this pattern. maybe late in the weekend we'll get some cooler conditions, but until then night and morning

good morning to you. welcome back. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we're following for you right now. at 6:42 pg&e crews are still at the scene of this deadly crash that happened yesterday following a police chase. police say the driver of a stolen car smashed right into a power pole and was crushed to death. this was yesterday afternoon. those repair crews are out there fixing downed power lines and traffic in that area is still being diverted. i want to take you to a live protest. this is a live look at a protest happening as we speak. you can see demonstrators there with their signs outside of ucsf mission bay hospital. now these are unemployed construction workers. they're angry. they say they want to shut down construction work at the hospital. they say they've been unfairly excluded. and an overnight fire at a vacant building sent very thick smoke into the skies above downtown alameda.

that fire started shortly after 1:00 a.m. on alameda avenue. no injuries have been reported. we're also getting new details right now about the relationship between the woman who was found dead inside of a burning car in san francisco this week and the suspect in the case. 29-year-old al mon johnson of sacramento is accused of killing the 23-year-old. johnson was reportly her boyfriend and the couple had a child together. police say the killing actually took place in sacramento. they're also saying johnson used her car to drive her body to san francisco's western addition. that is where he set it on fire. encouraging news this morning involving the surfer who nearly drowned while surfing in half-moon bay. jacob was rushed to the hospital after being caught by a 20-foot wave at mavericks over the weekend. doctors say he's regained consciousness and is in fair condition. we now know when the america's cup races will be held on the san francisco bay.

the whole way. let's go out and take a look at the commute on the peninsula. northbound 101 this morning at third there's a bus accident. doesn't look like injuries are involved. but traffic may be slow on san mateo at third avenue. this morning's commute is going to be okay at the toll plaza. and clear. just over the hill in contra costa county highway 4, highway 24, the typical slow traffic mixed in with very thick fog. steve will expand on that in just a moment. and the morning drive in san raff yell is clear here as well. traffic coming down passing the civic center and heading south. a little busy but not stop and go yet. 6:47. let's go to steve. sal, you are correct. dense fog advisory north bay and east bay. for many peninsula, coast, south bay near 50. san francisco's 52. yet we see a lot of 30s and some very cold foggy conditions with awful visibility. no rain that's for sure. nothing for a while. forecast today calls for fog

until 11:00 that fog advisory. some mist in there as well. and very windy right along fish ranch road in grizzly peak oakland hills saw a gust of 40 miles per hour. it's howling for some. that's up around 1400 feet. that breeze goes down into oakland and they might have another record high today. lingering fog by the afternoon hazy sun, mostly sunny cool to warm. if the fog takes a while to cool off it's going to be cold. hazy sun but upper 50s and low 6 0z. dense fog advisory again mainly north and east bay. visibility next to zero for some. east wind coming right back in from the valley. fairfield, concord takes that fog right over vallejo, crockett and san pablo bay and socks in. san francisco 5. santa rosa 36. that's a huge difference. 48 redwood city. 48 hayward and mountain view 46. a little easterly breeze. that's a warm breeze for them. nothing coming our way as far as any rain. occasionally higher clouds come right on down both that

congresswoman gabrielle giffords is about to be transferred to a rehabilitation center. we're keeping an eye on it. this is a live picture. the chopper is right over head over the ambulance right there. you can see what we're seeing right now. this is outside the hospital where the congresswoman's been treated for the last few days since arriving from tucson, arizona. the doctors are saying this morning she has improved enough to start a program of very intense rehabilitation. congresswoman giffords will have to learn how to walk, how to feed, how to dress herself all over again after being wounded in the head in that devastating shooting in tucson, arizona. doctors are telling us she will probably be at the rehabilitation center for at least six months, but, again, these are live pictures of the ambulance that will be taking her to the rehab center in houston, texas. we'll keep you posted on the latest developments. swarms of genetically modified mosquitoes have been released into the wild in malaysia to combat a

potentially deadly virus. it's the first of its kind experiment in asia to combat a disease. about 6,000 insects have been infected in hopes of shrinking the populationful right now there's no vaccine or treatment for the virus. a high speed chase ended in a horrifying crash. take a look at this video east of los angeles. show it again. a local television helicopter crew captured the dramatic scene. the chp says the driver refused to pull over for a minor traffic violation. he then crashed into another car while racing down the freeway. now he was arrested. the condition of the other driver is not known. well, central heating may be making you fat. that's according to a new study by the journal obesity reviews. the study's authors say since so much of our time is spent in heated houses, offices and cars we no longer burn as many calories to warm our bodies.

scientists say it's an increasing problem developed across the world where average indoor temperatures are constantly rising. 6:55. the search is on for a missing teacher from marin county. claudine wong is live in ross where the teacher was last seen before she disappeared. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. yes, we're at ross elementary right here because this is where debra was last seen. the 53-year-old was seen a week ago here. and her mysterious disappearance has a lot of people concerned. we want to come back over here because we want to show you a facebook fan page created for her. she's actually a teacher at the school and there's a lot of people within just a few hoursing writing their concerns on this page. they just say we hope you're okay. we want you to come back safely. take you through what happened very quickly. she was last seen on wednesday at ross school just walking in and around this area. this is where she's from. on thursday her students got to her english class and found a note on the board saying thank you with her school keys. police checked her home and

found her vehicle, her purse, her id, credit cards, they really don't know where she went. they believe she may have gone on her own either walking or some other way. there are searches planned for the area just to look for her. police at this point saying they do not suspect foul play or suicide. they say she does need some medication and they are obviously very concerned about just tracking her down and making sure that she's okay. so we've been here in ross this morning. i've talked to police this morning. we know there should be some activity throughout the day. she was a teacher at tear linda high school in synura fell and a lot of people concerned this morning. we're going to head over there right now and check on the school and see if anyone over there has any new information. we'll check in with you coming up on mornings on 2. live in ross, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. all right. time now 6:57. we're actually getting a sneak peek as well at "american idol" season ten heads to milwaukee and nashville searching for new talent. ♪ [ music ]
