said the tires would likely be good. his corolla was seen at a filling station an hour before the abduction in paterson. rodriguez is accused of kidnapping 4-year-old juliani cardenas after buying alcohol here. authorities have not been able to compare to tire treads to those found around the team of the abduction because there were oversized aluminum rims. they've only compared one of the tire treads fond because of the similar description to the missing corolla. >> we knew we would find vehicles in the canal. we didn't think it would be this far into the investigation without, one, finding the suspect's vehicle with the evidence we have. or, two, we haven't located a

vehicle that made the tire tracks. >> reporter: still, the strongest lead so far was the account of a carrolling into the delta mendota canal after the abduction. there were tire trucks in and around that time. they keep coming back to the delta mendota canal. we understand in a couple hours those dive teams will be back out here and back in the water. >> thank you. the community of paterson is rallying around the family. more than 100 people gathered for an emotional vigil. the mother is expecting a

workers who are ready to work. >> we have been protesting and demonstrating over a year. now they said they made an agreement they were going to work with us. now that the job has started, they're doing something different. >> the protesters vowed they will block both accesses of the gates and shut down the construction site. three bay area mayors will join other mayors to pressure governor recount to change his mind. san francisco ed lee, gene kwan and chuck reed along with six other california mayors will be meeting with the governor in sacramento. the mayors are against the plans for redevelopment. they said about 300,000 construction jobs are supported every year. at a meeting tonight the oakland school district will consider a possible 2% raise for

teachers. but the district's budget is so title the teacher raises would have to mean cuts elsewhere. oakland teachers are among the lowest paid in the country. they staged a number of demonstrations last year calling for increases. the raise would cost $2 million while the district faces a $12 million deficit. >> this morning clock clock police are busy trying to figure out who would want to keel a local union leader. we have more on the chocking discover -- shocking discovery. >> friends say that berry -- bingham was likable. two workers were sent to his

house. they knocked on the door and it was opened. they noticed that berry's car was parked in the street. they called 911. police arrived around 11 theft yesterday -- 11:30 yesterday morning. he had suffered trauma but police would not say how bingham was killed. police are not saying whether the homicide was random but neighbors said there hasn't been violence like this around here for a long time. >> this area is really quiet. this is the first thing we've had on this street in the 20 years i've been here. >> reporter: bingham was the political leader of local 1021. he was a deacon at his church, the first african-american elected to the alameda school

board, and he was married with two children. by the way, police are offering a very large reward in this case for any tips leading to the killer or killers, $10,000. this morning pge crews are at the scene of a crash. the crash capped a series of events involving two vehicles stolen from the same woman. police spotted her stolen subaru near mere a monty high school. she also noticed her pickup truck, not knowing it was stolen. the driver then smashed right into a power pole and was crushed to death.

an up date on new home sales. it show has surge in purchases. sales climbed 18% in december, the biggest jump since 1992. it was led by strong home sales in the west. analysts say buyers may have jumped into the market to lock in lower interest rates that are moving higher. also just in in the past 10 minutes, the u.s. budget deficit will hit almost $1.5 trillion this yeared that is a new record. the latest figures are up from previous estimates because the

welcome back. a new lead in the search for juliani cardenas as divers go back to a canal. the co-owners of a tire shop gave deputies receipts. the receipt contains information about the brand of tires. that could help investigators match tire tracks found near the canal. the divers have pulled about nine cars from the canal. they will presume their search at 9:00 this morning. the lead investigator in another high profiled child abduction case has been slowly watching the search for juliani cardenas. detective tim bower was in charge of the search for sandra cantu. he said investigators in the

cardenas case are probably fighting emotional and psychological fatigue. >> you reflect. sometimes you personalize things. that's the emotional thing. the psychological is the long hours. >> he said there are similarities but in this case authorities are able to give out more information because they know their suspect. police say a good samaritan became the target of gun violence on the streets of oakland last night. the man was trying to stop a street robbery when a gunman shot him in the back. the victim is recovering at the hospital. the gunman made an escape on a bicycle. we're learning more about a fatal -- officer involved shooting. police converged on a home. the homeowner had reported there

was a suspicious man on his property. officers confronted the suspect in a nearby creek. >> they approached him down in the ravine. he approached them with an unknown weapon. i guess a couple shots were discharged and fatally wounding the man. >> investigators tell us the man was carrying a knife. they have not released the name of the man killed. a couple hours ago this morning a group of california highway patrol cadets paid tribute to police officers killed in the line of duty. i want to show you new video from sacramento. about 5:00 this morning these cadets ran five miles. they ran from the chp academy to near the state capitol. that memorial run is a tradition for cadets before they graduate. >> right now, people in contra costa county are conducting a homeless census.

the count takes place every two years when volunteers span out -- fan out trying to find people sleeping outside. the data collected is used to track trends on homelessness. it also helps the county secure federal funds for homeless programs. solana county is starting a count. this year deep and is high for section 8 housing. officials expect to get 100,000 applications, but there are only 10,000 spots on the list. applicants have to sign up on line which have caused long lines at the city's libraries. people have until saturday to sign up. a lottery will determine who gets on the waiting list. a search is happening right

now for a smes teacher from a -- missing teacher from marin. >> reporter: that message was left here at the high school where 53-year-old debra schmidt teaches. it was last thursday her students came to school and found the teacher left the school keys and a message on the blackboard that said thank you. since then a search has been on for her. we have been monitoring facebook because there's a page where students are reaching out, where people are posting their con sernls. we just came from ross elementary school because someone reported seeing her on wednesday, the day before she was reported missing. then she went home and from there she was gone. the police are heading up the search. i talked to ross police. they plan to go to a creek and a

head january 8th in a rampage that killed six people and injured her and 12 others. once again, congresswoman gabrielle giffords has been moved to a rehab clinic in houston, texas. her condition has been upgraded from serious to good. singer jimmy buffett is in the hospital after falling off a stage in australia. it shocked fans at his concert in sydney. he lay on the floor waiting for paramedics and then rushed to the hospital. so far, no official word on his condition. he fell face first off the stage and struck his head. which silly chon valley worker -- silicon valley company will be hiring 6,000 workers.

investors have a lot to react to. the company announced it doubled its fourth quarter earnings. much of it came from cost cutting measures. yahoo also announced it is cutting another 150 jobs, on top of the 600 it eliminated last month. google stock sup as google plans to add 6200 workers before the end of the year. that is the biggest expansion since the company was a start-up. google has already said this wants to add more new technology to what it already offers. some industry analysts say the fastest way to do that would be to buy other companies. they can add them through acquisitions, not by hiring its own new workers. lowe's home improvement stores plan to hire part-time

a florida woman is shaken up but okay after a gas station canopy fell on her car. look at that picture. the woman had just pulled up to the gas station when the canopy fell. she became trapped underneath. it took 40 minutes to get her out. there will be an autopsy for a woman killed in a snowmobiling accident. she crashed into a ski lift

good morning. within the hour the commerce department reported an unexpected surge in new home sales. the update is showing that sales climbed 18% in december. that's the biggest july in new home sales since 1992. it was led by sales in the west and follows data that shows an increase in december. analysts say buyers jumped into the market. america's budget deficit will hit almost $1.5 trillion this year. that's a new record. the latest figures came out from the congressional budget office. they're up from previous numbers. that's because of the decision to extend bush-era tax cuts. that, along with jobless

bicycle. we're learning more about a fatal officer-involved shooting in the foothills east of san jose. it happened yesterday after police officers, sheriff's deputies and helicopters rushed to a home where the homeowner reported there was a suspicious man on his property. officers confronted the suspect in a nearby creek. >> they approached him down in the ravine. he approached them with an unknown weapon. i gels a couple shots were discharged and fatally wounding the man. investigators tell us the man was carrying a knife. they have not releasessed -- released the name of the man had was killed. three hours ago a group of california highway cadets paid a special tribute to police officers killed in the line of duty. the cadets ran five miles from the chp academy in sacramento all the way to the california
