are waiting for police to confirm reports of at least one death. witnesses at the scene say one person was killed. that has not been confirmed. we'll continue to watch what happens here and bring you more information on this developing story just as soon as we get it. hopefully a little bit later in the news cast. and in just the last few minutes, a search wrapped up in marin county for a missing terra linda high school teacher. ktvu david stevenson has more in marin county where crews spent the day looking for clues. >> reporter: julia that is right, moments ago the search for this woman, deborah schmitt began wrapping up here in marin county. and what surprised the number of people was that the search for her began today when she was reported missing six days ago. now we want to show you pictures taken earlier this evening, just about an hour ago from news chopper two about an hour ago above phoenix lake, which is close to this area. we were there this afternoon as a team of about 30 searchers

began to look through 100 of acres in the lake, an area schmitt was known to frequent. the 53-year-old woman was reported missing last week when her husband returned home from a trip. and she didn't return to school. she left a thank you message on the board, and the keys on her desk. her id credit cards were all found in her house. a ross spokesperson said that the case didn't meet the need for the search to be called out last thursday. but they said new leads developed yesterday merited calling in a search and rescue crew today. >> well this is a very difficult search, because we're basically up here on a premise that maybe she didn't go far. we really didn't have any specific information as far as the direction of travel. and certainly there is nothing to indicate she is up here as well. she could have gotten gone many other places, such as a bus or something like that. >> reporter: now i checked with the police moments ago. they indicated they would look

tomorrow morning where the search goes next and whether they will return to phoenix lake to continue the search for deborah schmitt. reporting live, marin county, david stevenson, ktvu, channel 2 action news. >> and investigators in patterson tonight are comparing tires with tracks leading into the delta mendota canal in their search for four-year-old juliani cardenas, the suspect, rodriguez, apparently bought 18- inch low profile tires in april of 2009. a witness says he saw the suspect's car drive into the canal just 45 minutes after the child was taken. and at the state mental hospital, a patient pleaded not guilty to robbing and killing a staff member on the hospital grounds. a preliminary hearing is set for may 2 for massey, who is accused of choking donna gross last october. others have raised questions about security at the facility. a town hall meeting on the issue will be held friday at napa valley college.

and a new call tonight for more public investigation of the san bruno pipeline explosion. consumer editor is live in san bruno where they are looking at information. >> reporter: you know it is really interesting because behind the signs there is a great big crater, all that is left of eight lives, 38 homes and the faith of a lot of people in pg&e's major gas lines. this was open and bare, causing nagging doubts about the relationship between pg&e and the state agency that is sworn to regulate it. >> pg&e has simply not done enough inspections and up until now, they have not demanded they do enough. >> reporter: just north and sitting on the same pipeline is south san francisco, once listed as having a very risky section, throughout the entire system. >> it was on the list, we all know. removed from the list for various reasons, administratively by pg&e, but

the factors have not changed out there. >> reporter: before the san bruno explosion, pg&e diverted 5 million of money granted to replace the south san francisco segment to another purpose. the pipe won't be replaced now for another two years. but since the explosion, the city has wanted pg&e to replace it now. >> they keep telling us they will check on it. it may be a possibility, but as late as last week we asked the question again, can we get any written material, yes or no on the question. we still don't have it. >> that is a pipeline that we believe ought to be inspected immediately. >> i am not an engineer, but i would think you would actually have to dig down below the surface and sections of the pipe to check it thoroughly for the well. i am not so sure that happened. >> somebody should be accountable if they knew that something like that could happen and potentionally happen again, somebody should be accountable. >> reporter: now as the newly appointed less utility-friendly

group thinks of it of course they know that one person died, and are looking into the entire system. channel 2 action news. and the parents of the woman who was killed in the san bruno pipeline explosion are killing pg&e. the wrongful death suit alleges that they led to the death of morales who was at the home of her boyfriend when the explosion happened. and the city began to hand out $6000 checks to the people who lived in the 38 destroyed homes. the money comes from almost 400,000 in donation that poured in after the disaster. homeowners whose property sustained moderate damage will get 4000, those with minor will get a thousand. and more on a special section

on the san bruno fire, including how state regulators have responded. just click on the gas line explosion tab. and a flurry of applications are pouring into oakland tonight as people in need of a place to live line up. ktvu has more from oakland where residents have been gathering to get their name on a long list. rob? >> reporter: julia right here inside the oakland public library many people are filling out applications on line, hoping to hit the jackpot. a spot on the waiting list for section 8 housing, but winning a spot is a long shot. >> i am loretta, this is my very humble house. >> reporter: she is paying 1300 a month for this apartment, and it is a struggle. she said the bank where she worked laid her off. she was health problems and worries she can keep her apartment. >> it is hard to pay the rent. i'm behind, i am trying to catch up. >> reporter: she is more than one of 100,000 bay area residents expected to apply this week just to get on the waiting list for a section 8

voucher. the waiting list has ten thousand spots. >> it is not very encouraging, but there is a few minutes to apply and see, you never know. >> reporter: so the applications must be submitted on line. many of those applying have been pouring into computer rooms at the oakland public library. the staff says the people using the computers have doubled. when we were there, people were in use. many say they're desperate for the voucher to get the thousand a month on average help. only 50 become available each month. >> although we see some recovery in the local economy we still have a lot of family whose are being passed over. >> reporter: this is perhaps a shot of the economic crisis that 100,000 people feel they need help paying the rent. >> can you wait? >> oh yeah, i can afford to wait. i can, i mean you document don't have any choices. >> reporter: people won't find out if they made the waiting list until july.

and housing authority officials say some may stay on the list for five years or more. reporting live, oakland, channel 2 action news. and a group of retirees, students, young workers and people with disabilities banded together this afternoon to send a message to washington. the message? hands off social security. addressing reporters outside the federal building in san francisco today, the group insists that social security has not contributed to the deficit. and cutting it will throw millions of people into poverty. the group is also opposed to tax cuts, saying they don't matthew jette don't generate jobs. d the governor's plan to cut costs is on track. the governor is willing to talk to service providers about health, social service and welfare cuts. but he says after years of budget problems he doesn't have a choice. >> people say this, not re

development, or child care, sup prisons. they keep saying no, no, no, but we have to come up with the 25 billion. >> brown wants nearly half of that to come from tax extensions. but republican lawmakers say they won't support it. governor brown also met with the mayors of nine of california's big cities today. the mayors want the governor to preserve redevelopment agencies which he has proposed cutting in his budget. brown defended the cuts, saying the state needs to "pull the bandaid off quickly and deal with painful decisions right now." and medicaid patients looked at the proposed cuts. the opponents looked at doctor's visits and prescriptions. >> we're on medication. we're instantly -- it is completely impossible for these patients to survive on 10 visits. >> under the governor's budget

proposal, the medical patients will be limited . more now on that developing news the east oakland, where a chase ended in a crash near the oakland coliseum just a while ago. police just finished a briefing on what happened. ktvu has more. >> reporter: and near 92nd and san leandro, you can see it is still blocked off. there has been one death in the chase. joining me now, the representative with the oakland police. you can see behind you to the right, tell us a little bit about what happened at the end of the chase. >> right now we're processing the scene and all the evidence on the scene. the homicide investigators have been called out to the scene as well as the internal affairs investigators and the district attorney's office, so. >> reporter: and what happened? we understand the person who died was one of two suspects. is that correct? what happened here that led up to that? >> what happened here is this

is the end result of a police chase that started in east oakland, after a shooting in the 7600 block of lock wood. the officers recognized the suspect vehicle. they attempted to pull the suspect vehicle over. the vehicle would not yield to the officers and ended up over here, turning around with an innocent driver. >> reporter: and we understand chopper two is over the area. there are two cars involved with the civilian's car. and you said something about the suspect car catching on fire and shots being fired. >> correct, the suspect vehicle did catch on fire. and you and both suspects exited the vehicle, and attempted to run. the driver was taken into custody without force being used. the suspect was armed with two guns at which time the officer engaged him and gave him commands that he didn't listen to. and he was shot and killed by the officers. >> reporter: thank you so much for joining us. we do understand this will be

. six bay area high school students have helped california reach a first in the field of science just a day after the parent issued this call -- president issued a call to parents and teachers. >> we need to recognize the winner of the science fair. >> and tonight they are being celebrated. and ktvu was there as two of the seniors learned about the achievement. >> reporter: the president wants as much recognition as those who wear these for those who also wear these. and that was definitely the case today. 600 students poured into the harbor school gym this morning. >> you guys know what you're coming in for? >> no idea. >> good morning.

>> good morning. >> reporter: the entire student body had a rally because of the 40 finalists nationwide in the science talent search. [cheering and applause] >> reporter: two were in this crowd. >> all of my friends are going crazy, all the parents were here, it is just amazing. i never had an experience like this before. >> reporter: the 17 finalists researched solar cells. >> we don't know a lot about it. so we looked at what was different and what we see around us. >> saratoga high among others were involved. >> this is the first year that california has more finalists in this competition than new york state. we have 11, they have seven. >> welcome news after a tough report card this year, showing that students lack the science

and technology needed to do well. parker, a private school says it has one focus. >> i think the thing to remember is at this school we celebrate our academic achievements the same way that we celebrate our athletic achievements. >> the finalists get a free trip to washington, d.c. in march to compete for a $100,000 prize. nick is hoping to get in stanford, rojas is waiting to hear from harvard. channel 2 action news. >> and san jose state will open their doors next year to nursing students looking to earn the highest degree possible. the board of trustees voted today to create a doctor in nursing practice. the campus will offer the degree, and san jose state will be the only one in the area. the program will start in the fall of 2012. and intel and stanford university are joining forces on graphics. they will fund a new intel

science and technology center on campus. 30 faculty and graduate students will conduct research on the visual competing projects. they plan to expand the model to other universities as well. >> all right, some beautiful weather out there. it has been like that for a long time but will change a little bit. bill martin has more from the weather center. yes, you're right, a record high in san jose, very warm, 70 degrees there. right now in san jose, 58 degrees, dropping 12 degrees in the last few hours. the cool could air coming in from the valley, the santa clara valley here, today, here one of the warmer spots in the bay area with 60s and 70s. here is how it breaks out. the dense fog returns tonight. you just one more night of that. high pressure is sending everything to the north through saturday. and then here is the new development. sunday, looks like we'll see showers in here. not a big deal. well it is a big deal that we haven't had anything. not a huge rain event.

but it will break down that ridge of high pressure and at least allow the opportunity for more storms to get in here. meanwhile, we get into tomorrow morning, which will be foggy. the north bay with a dense fog advisory, this morning, not in effect now. they could stick one into effect late tonight or tomorrow, steve paulson will be here, lots of fog, fairfield, vacaville, and a dense fog advisory as it was last night in the san joaquin valley. some of the fog will drift north and some will go west. so a repeat of what we had today. the computer model like this. fog, not rain, thursday morning, tomorrow morning, basically. you see the fog, right? and you see the fingers of it kind of coming out here. and as we get into thursday early morning, this is when you drive around, 7 or 8:00 in the morning. very similar footprints, napa, black point, san rafael, so as you get into the day tomorrow

it burns back. it changes tommorow as the winds go onshore. and the weather system wants to come in saturday, increasing clouds, sunday, showers. we'll see that in the five-day forecast. meanwhile, check out the forecast tomorrow. 69 in morgan hill, 70 in santa cruz, 70 in red wood city. thursday, a nice one, friday looking good, saturday increasing clouds, sun rain coming in. the five-day forecast, a light sprinkle of showers on sunday. shouldn't be a big deal. quarter of an inch, 10th of an inch. still a ways out quite frankly. but definitely it is leaving from what we have been showing you the next couple of days. not a lot of significant rain, so it will be nice to see it. >> something for you to talk about. thank you bill. here is a good idea if you are looking for a job. california employers are feeling more confident about hiring in the new year. 54% plan to hire new employees in 2011. that is not all. more than 60% will increase pay. also, 54% will keep the

matching 401k retirement contributions. foreclosures in california fell nearly 31% at the end of 2010, compared to the end of the year before. they say default notices, the first official step in the foreclosure process, fell by 17 and a half%. in the bay area, home repossessions were down almost 23%. they say it due to a decline in the shift of mortgage lending practices and the economy. and dow up for the first time in two and a half years. the dow slipped a little this afternoon, but still finished the day at the highest level since the summer of 2008. the dow gained more than eight points ending just shy of 12,000. the nasdaq rose 20 points finishing at 2700. and a south bay high school science experiment is about to dock at the international space station. how it could help astronauts survive in space
