delayed officers to a scene. an early morning house fire has forced evacuatations. newschopper 2 just arrived on the scene. mornings on 2 begins right now. good morning to you. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. we begin with breaking news from san jose. crews are on the scene of a house fire at 13th street between jackson and taylor. it started about 45 minutes ago. these are pictures from newschopper 2. you can see the firen gin with the lights on. the fire has brought down power lines. at this point there's no word of

any injuries. crews appear to have it under control. a house fire and power lines down at -- in san jose at jackson and taylor. we are also learning new information about the life of a missing english teach are, debbie schschmitt. schschmitt-- schmitt. >> reporter: we've been trying to get ahold of the sergeant. it's been a long 24 hours but keep in mind, debbie smit has been missing for a week. she wanted to know why it took so long to get things started. >> reporter: he said this case

didn't meet the criteria for a search and rescue until a couple hours ago. we already learned she liked to hike. schmitt's cousin also tells us there was a lot going on in her life. she had several close family members pass away unexpectantly and was going through a divorce. her cousin said schmitt had been vague about details in their recent emails. however, the last one, last wednesday about two hours before she disappeared said simply quote still at home, will give you a call, love debbie. family members are trying to remember conversations. some believe show may have volunteered in a soup kitchen.

ago. two men have been rescued after the collapse of a garage roof. this is happening in lynn, massachusetts. these are pictures of the chopper flying over lynn. lynn's deputy fire chief said they had to use power and hand tools to cut through the roof of the car. the trapped workers are in excellent physical shape. the ordeal took about two hours. when the men were found they were seated inside the car hunched down with the roof just above the headrest. a beam had fallen from the roof and almost crushed the car. two men were rescued. the latest storm to hit the east coast is causing flight delays. officials at spho -- sfo said six continental flights have

been canceled. flights are also said to resume at newark, new jersey's airport in two hours. if you're expecting someone to arrive from the east coast, you're urged to call ahead. this morning oakland police continue to investigate a deadly police shooting. it happened after a police chase and a horrible crash. now we're getting details. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us with more. >> reporter: first we want to show you where the crash ended yesterday. it happened at 85th and san leandro street. officers said -- the officer said he was forced to open fire on the suspect. the suspect's car, a red

infiniti crashed into another car. the passenger of the car got out and police say he was armed with two guns. after he refused to put them down the officer opened fire and he died on the spot. police arrested the second man without incident. police say the two were involved in a drive-by shooting on lockwood not too far away. there was a high speed chase reaching up to 70 miles an hour. a neighbor described what he saw. >> they were standing on the porch, just got home from school, was going in the house. >> reporter: to make matters worse, oakland police experienced problems with the radio system. dispatchers could not communicate with officers but the officers could speak to each other.

the woman claiming to be the suspect's mother said police didn't have to shoot and kill her son. she said he is the father of a 4-year-old and had just gotten out of jail. >> shouldn't happen. you trap a person like an animal in a cage. these kids live a dangerous life out here. >> reporter: we checked in with the coroner. they're not officially releasing the name. we're waiting to hear back from oakland police. report being live, jade hernandez. >> it is nine minutes after 7:00. there may be some delays on mission street if san francisco after a car hit a fire hydrant. it happened at 23rd and mission. as you can see, the crash caused a big mess in the area. the driver took off. the san francisco water department is working to repair the fire hydrant.

continues to look good as you're driving to castro valley. the fog, if you have it, will be a tough one. we have fog advisories out north bay, east bay. for many it's clear. it will be another sunny hazy warm day but the fog advisory until 10:00. some of the fog is make visibility awful. hazy sunshine, chilly and mild. hazy sun for some. upper 60s, low 70s for others. a couple lows trying to move toward us. the cooldown will happen by the weekend. today and tomorrow is pretty much what you see is what you get. the fog advisory goes until 10 a.m. and comes right over the

we're following breaking news in san jose. this power line came down, apparently it came down on top of this house. that's what we heard police and firefighters saying. the actual wire was on fire and the house was on fire an hour ago when the police and fire department arrived. obviously people inside the house and people next door to the building were evacuated. the fire department is still on the scene. this is on north 13th street

between jackson and taylor. that street is still closed. looks like the fire department does have some semblence of order. let's go back to the desk. as we've been telling you, the east coast is cleaning up after yet another snowstorm. let's go to washington, d.c. even the president of the united states got stuck in that snowy traffic. >> reporter: we have been spending the morning swapping horror stories. i live in d.c. and we weren't hit too badly. we were got four inches. it's already starting to melt. the sidewalks are now clear. the roadways are now clear. it was a different story in the suburbs. let's take a look at what happened last night. this was mess and mayhem has commuters got slammed. trips that usually take one hour

got stretched to six or seven hours. it got so bad that some people abandoned their cars and walked away. our morning photographer in d.c. was stuck in traffic for six hours. he turned around and came back to the district where he and another photographer crashed at our boss' house. even president obama wasn't spared. a 20-minute drive turned into an hour long affair even as his motorcade got snarled in traffic. today it's the big dig out. about 300,000 people are without power. it will be above freezing for the next couple of days. pretty soon some of this stuff will be melted. we are closely watching a story out of utah this morning. that's where army officials say a sensitive base has been reopened hours after it was locked down to resolve what they

call a serious concern. the base, in dougway, utah, carries out tests to protect troops against biological and chemical attacks. no detailed information has been given on why the embassy was locked down for a time overnight. chilly new details about the suspected gunman in the days leading up to the tuscon shootings. jared loughner reportedly used his computer to search legal injections, solitary confinement and political assassinations just days before the january 8th attack. the alleged searches could help prosecutors as they seek murder charges against loughner. meanwhile, congresswoman gabrielle giffords is make strides in her recovery. she is undergoing intensive therapy in houston. we watched as she was transported by ambulance yesterday. doctors plan to insert a valve

into her breathing tube to help her try to talk but it's still unclear whether he is will be unable to do so. back here at home, state senator leland yee said he received yet another threatening racist letter, this time a response to senator yee's criticism of rush limb ball. he said the let came pie fax. the letter writer made reference to rush limbaugh who senator yee called on to apologize after the talk show host made fun of the chinese language. >> i don't want to give anybody some indication because of the threats being made that we're going to be silenced. >> this recent fax is similar to one ?rar yee -- senator yee raised last year about a fee paid to sarah palin. both contained the same letter head, a truck with a noose

attached to it. senator yee has launched an online petition against companies that advertise on rush limbaugh's show. after senator yee complained, rush limbaugh made fun of him on his raid yes show. the canal search for 4-year-old juliani cardenas has been put on hold. it has led to the discovery of 11 cars. one couple's car was stolen in november. since police doesn't know who stole the car, the couple has to pay the bill. they now owe the towing company more than $3,000, which is more than the car is worth. >> wound up with nothing and ended up losing more. >> it takes a lot to do it. >> almost a dozen cars have been

months. each family will receive a $500 disney gift card. back here at home, oakland animal services are working to find new homes for 33 dogs rescued from some horrible conditions. they were found in a house in east oakland. they were living stacked on top of each other inside of crates, many of them very sick and sitting in their own waste. oakland animal services are trying to send some of the dogs to oregon and south dakota. the owner is charged with animal cruelty. a group of animal taxi drivers in dallas are threatening to protest on super bowl sunday by refusing to drive fans from the airport to the stadium. they're upset about a city policy that awards some cabs by

departure boards. nearly 20 flights into sfo were canceled because of the bad weather. people trying to get here are basically stuck in washington, d.c., philadelphia, boston and new york. a winter storm dumped more than a foot of snow in places like we mentioned and it's taking a toll on passengers. >> i'm trying to be help about it. we have to go in for business and we have a 3-year-old. >> what can you do. >> you got an extra day in san francisco. >> i did. >> reporter: hundreds of passengers have been stranded due to that storm. yesterday there were more delays, about 30 flights to sfo were canceled. many airlines halted flights as a precaution nar -- precautionary measure. we met some folks earlier.

rodriguez. less arrived at a shooting scene around 7:00 last night but did not find anyone. we're told friends took him to a nearby hospital, put him in a wheelchair and left. the victim is in stable condition. police are investigating the motive. they said it's not clear if it was gang related. religious leaders will be calling for safety to be a top priority when they meet with mayor chuck reed. it's been a violent start to san jose with nine homicides. the leaders are also calling on the city to hire a police chief that will focus on restoring trust between the police officers and the community. napa police are looking for a vandal who shot the windows out of 40 parked cars. one family tells us windows on

welcome back. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. crews are still on the scene on 13th street between jackson and taylor. it started shortly after 6 a.m. these pictures were taken a short time ago. what has made this scene dangerous is the fire brought down power lines. that has forced the evacuation of several homes. at this point there's no report of injuries. crews appear to have the fire under control. there's no word on how the fire started. we'll follow it during the final hour of morning on 2. we've been getting new information from the cousin of missing english teacher debra schmitt. the cousin has been talking about recent deaths in the

family. let's go to claudine wong right now. does she know where the cousin is. >> reporter: the short answer is no. we want to show you how much the internet has played a role in this. it's a place where people are coming together. this is a fan book page for debra schmitt created by students. the number of members as grown over the past 24 hours. a lot of people leaving their comments, expressing how upset they are and their concern. the internet is also a place is looking for clues, including an email she sent to a cousin. >> reporter: the cousin has been watching searches online from her home in the east coast and has talked to police a couple of times. police don't believe this is foul play or suicide.

she says even in difficult times, you know, she has really come and been bubblely and optimistic about everything that's been happening. in this specific instance there are two emails. they have come from debbie schmitt on the day she disappeared. there's actually two of them that day. one came at 2:25, just a couple hours before she went missing. schmitt had been calling her and emailing her about the things going on in her life. the email said still at home, will give you a call, love debbie. >> she said show would call me. i was floored when her husband called me and told me. i'm still floored. i still don't know what to say.

specific audiences about specific threats. well, this morning oakland police are still investigating a deadly police shooting. it happened yesterday afternoon following a police chief and violent crash. jade hernandez is joining us with why police said there were radio problems that slowed down their response. >> reporter: oakland police said the police could have arrived earlier. they had initial problems. it happened at 85th and san leandro street. around 4:20 the suspect's car, red infiniti crashed. the passengers, armed with two guns, got out. refusing to put the guns down. the officers opened fire. a young man died. officers arrested the driver without incident. the two were involved in a drive-by shooting in the 7600 block of lockwood. dispatchers couldn't speak to officers during part of the incident but officers could communicate with each other. now the medical response was delayed but it's unclear how long.

the woman claiming to be the suspect's mother said her son is a father of a 4-year-old and recently had been released from jail. >> didn't have to happen. you trap a person like an animal in a cage. these people live a dangerous life out here. >> reporter: we checked in with the coroner this morning. they won't officially release the suspect's name. the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave. >> thank you. well, one family affected by horrible tragedy is trying this morning to help others after a horrible incident on the streets of oakland. last night a 1-year-old girl who was a member of their family was hit and killed by a car on 78th avenue. police say a family member was moving a car.

anymore drinks. the plane was diverted to utah where he was arrested. people will meet with the mayor and call on him to hire a police chief who will focus on restoring trust between the office and the community. they will call for safety to be a top priority. it has been a violent start to 2011 with nine homicides in the first three weeks. san jose arrived at the scene of a shooting but did not find anyone. the friends had taken him to the hospital. police said it's unclear if the incident is gang related. napa list are -- police are searching for whoever shot the windows out of dozens of cars with beebee cars. 40 cars were targeted monday and tuesday night.

who died. the home became engulfed in flames. the suit alleges negligence and said the utility could have prevented it by fixing a number of safety hazards. donations are giving some temporary relief for a san francisco clinic that remains open today but may close down. the lion market clinic has served the gay and lesbian community for three decades. the clinic has received thousands in donations. it needs $250,000 to reduce immediate debt. however, $500,000 is needed to remain hope. there will be a fund-raiser this sunday at the el rio bar. the event which include performances, dj music, raffle

another weather emergency. you remember the big blizzard. mayor michael bloomberg said this has been the city's snowiest january. the u.s. muslim population is expected to double over the next 20 years according to a new pew study. it will grow from 2.6 million to more than 6 million in 2030. that's a jump from 1% of the population to almost 2%. worldwide muslims will make up one quarter of the population by the same date. as more bay area counties start counting their homeless, one group is criticizing the method. the volunteers are not supposed to approach or speak to people while they do the count but the

group says this could lead to people being included who are not homeless. the city defends the process. they say it is accurate. the san francisco census starts at 7:00 and will continue until midnight. preliminary numbers from contra costa's counter showing fewer people are homeless. the county said about 1500 people right now live outdoors. that's down from about 1900 two years ago. the county hasn't yet tallied the numbers on how many are living in shelters. a group of men in san anselmo want to change the way people see men. they said crying is a therapeutic way to row dues anger. a therapist leads the group and gives them a safe place to get in touch with their feelings. >> i think everybody's tears are
