♪[ music ] >> after searching the delta canal for more than a week this morning the sheriffs say they have found the car they were looking for in the abduction. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. >> good afternoon, topping our news this noontime, a major development in the search for a four-year-old patterson boy, late this morning crews

searching a central valley canal found the suspect's car. it is still wedged under the water. ken pritchett has just arrived on the scene, what is happening there now? >> reporter: i want to try to show you where they located that car. behind me you see the canal. it looks like it comes to an end. actually that is where it goes underwater through three large siphon tubes, they are 15 foot wide pipes that go into water. the pipe on the far side where she should be zoomed in right now underwater, that is where they located the car using a new type of sonar, it was sensitive enough to see the car and read the license plate, which allowed them to confirm this was the suspect's car they are looking for. it is the suspect's car, now wedged underwater. here is the sheriff making the announcement. he says the mother has been

notified. >> the fbi victim's advocate that has been with them the entire time has notified them that we found the vehicle. so at this point it is still a recovery operation and we are certainly saddened by the fact that we found the car, even though we knew we would. >> reporter: dive teams searched this area last week. in fact, it was the first place they looked in this search of the canal. they thought this area was cleared, then for a week they searched a 12 mile stretch of the delta canal bringing up dozens of cars. they returned to this car wednesday night, just to double check, because they were confident this car was in the water here based on a witness statement, who that witness says he saw the car going in the water with a man and child inside. he says he saw that, that witness 45 minutes after the abduction of the child. the car matched the suspect's car, the car driven by 27-year-

old jose rodriguez. that witness statement, according to the sheriff was key as he says to resolving this case. >> if that witness had not come forward or his son had not asked him to come talk to us, we may not have been -- we may not have ever located this car. >> reporter: again that fbi sonar brought in this morning was able to read the license plate on that car but that sona was unable to see inside the car to determine if there are any bodies inside. when they were conducting this search this morning the water level in the delta canal had been reduced, which aided in the search. they can only do that for a stern certain period of time. the water level is rising again and it will be another four hours before they can reset the system. in 4 hours dive teams will go back in and try to hook on to that car. he says it is wigged wedged in

uncertainty. radios are unreliable, police cars need to be replaced and even though the police chief is not leaving, the union told me he would not be surprised if the city's top cop left for somewhere. people we talked to this morning say all this uncertainty comes down to how well people get along. >> i think it has a lot to do with relationships and speaks volumes about how well the city council and the mayor's office and the various departments are getting along as well. >> reporter: the chief says it is about getting on the same page in terms of priorities. >> everything i have been asked to do i have kept my bargain. i think i questioned if the city and the city government is willing to do anything it takes to keep the citizens safe. >> reporter: the council president admits there are issues, although he won't name names. >> i am not going to say who is attempting to micro manage him but i think he knows best how to run our police department. >> reporter: this break down is not new for oakland, remember former chief wayne tucker? when he resigned in 2009 the big reason he gave was lack of

support from the city council. >> the reality is i am frustrated and don't have much faith in their ability. >> reporter: so even though the chief is not going to san jose, the union said don't be surprised if he goes somewhere. >> i would not be surprised at this point. it is unfortunate if we have to look for a new chief. >> reporter: he says if that is true low moral would get lower, what this department needs he says is stability. residents say that is one thing everyone should agree on. >> i like continue tee but it is times we times we live in

unfortunately. >> new revelations this noontime but pg&e and record keeping on its gas pipelines. jackie spear says the utility president utility told her the company cannot find records on some of its lines. last speak spear pointed to a federal report that indicates the pipeline that exploded in september had bed welds, welds pg&e apparently did not even know were there. if they cannot produce the records it could have to undergo an experiencesive process of shooting down pipelines and using high pressure water streams to test them. >> if pg and e doesn't have the records that is incompetent. if the company they contracted with didn't make pipe that was safe, that is incompetent. i don't think the ratepayers should have to pay the tab for that. i think that should come out of

the profits that pg&e enjoyings from enjoys from time to time. >> they will not comment on her complains but will have a final report by the deadline of march 15th. a house fire this morning caused 3/4s of a million dollars in damage. we were the first on the scene. so why did the person staying at the home call the owner instead of 911 when flames erupted? >> reporter: fire snaked its way through the attic. >> the initial reports from there. >> reporter: this house is situated at the bottom of a hillside, far enough from nearby homes. the fire chief told them a

friend was staying inside the home. >> we know there was a phone call from the house to the owner, but prior to our arrival. the occupant, one or more had already left the scene. >> reporter: still unsure as to why the fire department was not called they combed through debris looking for a reason of the fire. a few parents arrived unaware of the damage. they were greeted with the news smoke closed the doors for the day. >> i live right around the corner so it was surprising i didn't hear any sirens or anything this morning but, yeah, of course it surprises you when you pull into your preschool and it is full of fire trucks. >> reporter: the fire is still under investigation. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> and we have revelations this noontime about pg&e and recordkeeping, but we will get to that in a moment. that danville house fire was the first incident broadcast on a new iphone application.

there. an art auction is being held tomorrow to benefit the two uc berkeley graduates still in iran. they were detained in 2009 on spying charges. she was the only one to be released on compassionat grounds last fall. she is expected to attend the event tomorrow, which starts at 7:00 at the arts cultural center. the auction will feature the work of 80 artists, including photographs taken by shane bauer, to view those log onto ktvu.com. golden gate bridge directors this morning arrived the plan that will do away with toll takers by late next year, instead cameras will take pictures of license plates and send drives a bill, there will also be kiosks. the plan will eliminate 32 toll taker jobs and save the bridge district more than $19 million

over the next ten years. an unforgettable anniversary today, 25 years ago space shuttle challenger exploded just 73 seconds after lift off from kennedy space center. >> challenger go with throttle up. >> challenger go with throttle up. >> those are the final words from the crew. the challenger carried seven people, including krista mccall live, the first teacher in space but she never made it. at a memorial in florida this morning the widow of the commander says every member of the challenger crew was a teacher. >> if we didn't somehow continue challenger's mission of education, then our loved ones would have died in vain and certainly that entire crew -- >> the families of the challenger crew created a living tribute by reaching to children through the challenger centers. there are now 48 centers in the u.s., canada, uk and south korea, where children can climb aboard a small scale shuttle to

see what astronauts do and conduct experiments. so far 4 million children and adults have learned more about space and science at those living memorials. you can go to kt v.com for more on the anniversary of the challenger disaster, click on the u.s. and world news tab. ♪ [ music ] >> hello to you. in time for the weekend big changes in store. we are even looking at wet weather by part of the -- the weekend, saturday into sunday. giving you a live look there at all that gray over oakland this afternoon. we should see partly cloudy skies in through the second half of our day. some of us it will be hard to shake that fog. some of it coming from the coast. areas around oakland, san francisco, into san jose covered in gray, some of it bleeding from the valley, areas around concord, danville, antioch and areas around napa reporting visibility just a mile in some cases. livermore at least on the east side mostly sunny at this time.

with that cloud cover overhead cooler air mass pulling in we are lot chillier than yesterday. you will notice getting outside widespread 40s out there, 49 oakland, 47 san francisco, mid- 40s mountainview. 10, 12 degrees chillier than yesterday. on to the satellite radar where we can tell in addition to low clouds mid and high level clouds moving through. it is this system here that will bring us some rain saturday night into sunday, so for today partly cloudy skies, the cooling begins, high pressure breaking down, onshore flow returning, by saturday night a few sprinkles, in the north bay, more widespread in the way of rain come sun. giving you a look at what is happening here, so into the evening hours you see still haze out there, by tomorrow morning the fog is back, but not until saturday night we get light rain moving through santa rosa. looks like the golden gate

area, san francisco but sunday morning is when the widespread rain moves through and a quick hitter, by sunday afternoon drying out already. so there you have it. we could see from a quarter inch to -- for some of our lower levels. widespread 60s and 50s depending on where you are at. 59 in san francisco. for your evening plans if you are out and about, early evening, maybe dinner outdoors, widespread 50s, low 60s with martially cloudy skies and sun setting at 5:30 these days. in the evening partly cloudy skies, temperatures upper 40s to mid-50s. your five-day-forecast for you there, so temperatures continuing to fall for tomorrow, partly cloudy skies waking up with fog and by sunday falling below average and could be breezy come monday as well. >> thank you.

we told you at the beginning of the newscast the car linked to the kidnapping of a four-year-old patterson boy has been found in a canal. now let's go out there live w ken pritchett has word on what search crews are doing next, ken. >> reporter: in a few hours they will attempt to remove that car from the pipe here. the sheriff says they found the

suspect's car connected to the kidnapping case in an underwater pipe here of the delta canal. sona was not only to sonar was not only able to see the car but read the license plate, that is how they know. they had searched this area before, the sheriff said all along he was confident the car was in the area based on the statement of a witness. he was abductedded at his home -- arms by jose rodriguez, the next day a massive search of the delta canal began after a witness says he saw a car with a man and a child inside drive into the canal 45 minutes after the abduction, 12 mights at least of the canal were searched in the following days throughout the next week but they were not able to find anything and returned to this original location. the sheriff says this tireless search effort has been difficult for all involved. >> it has been an emotional
