use to get down into the water. right below that ladder is a tunnel underwater, a tube underwater about 15 feet wide. that is where the sheriff's department located the suspect's car this morning. they used an underwater camera which was able to read the license plate of that car which is now trapped in that tube underwater to make a positive identification. now the dive teams have back up. those back up dive members are sitting on board including the two divers. ken as i said, this car is at the bottom of a tunnel. the car is the same one used in the abduction of 4-year-old juliani cardenas kidnapped a week ago from his home. a witness spotted the car with a man and child inside dive into the canal a short distance away from our location 45
5:01 pm
minutes after the abduction. the dive team searched this area before but missed the car. the job now is for the divers to dive into the tube, it is essentially like diving in an underwater cave. >> the problem is even with the water that was reduced. the flow that's reduced there's still a lot of water coming through those blocks. so challenges are the water 72 degrees, the strength and current of the water, zero visibility, all of those challenging factors make this dive very complex and very dangerous. >> now ken i said that i saw those divers come out of water about five minutes ago. the question we are waiting to get answered is if they were able to latch on to that car and that tube and also it's an open question as to whether or not there's other debris that
5:02 pm
they will have to remove first. it's possible that there are additional cars in that underwater tube. it is also very important to note that while that sonar camera was able to read that license plate and identify that car, that camera was not able to see inside of the car. so we do not know if there are any bodies locateed in that car. and right now we see the tow truck there, looks like the crews are gathered around there. we just -- at this point awaiting to hear whether or not they were able to secure a cable on to that car. at which point once they do that they should be able to pull out in short order. reporting live in stanislaus county. >> i understand there's a race against time as far as today goes. once the sun goes down the divers can't be down there. the idea is to try to locate the vehicle, hook it up and pull it out before the sun goes down. >> that's correct, it's possible to dive at night but
5:03 pm
that's not the only race time at issue here. they have lowered the canal and in truth what they are not doing is lowering the canal, they are reducing the flow of water here in the delta menota canal. there's only a window of time to do that, and that window is about to close. if they are not able to get the car out of there in a two hour window. then the water will have to be released at its normal level. then it will be another four hours before they can reset it. they may try to lower it again tonight about four or five hours from now and give it another try. the team is not sure if they'll be able to do it. >> reporter: ken pritchett live at the mendota canal. the news that the vehicle has been found followed quickly through juliani's hometown of

we're following breaking news from patterson here where you see a live picture of searchers at the delta mendota canal pullingup a vehicle. this vehicle was discovered earlier today just before noon. sheriff's investigators have told us they have found the vehicle linked to the abduction of juliani cardenas. we can see here the car in question is being brought to the surface. the big question here ken, they do not know who or what is possibly inside the vehicle. and we heard the sheriff told
5:41 pm
us earlier today that they will not know that until the car is brought to the surface. >> they are going to obviously find that out in short order as they start to look inside and what you're actually looking at is three vehicles, three different vehicles that are clumped together, they are wedged in this tube that drops underground from the mendota canal. they are all bunched up in this giant tube, it's about 15 by 15 feet. 50feet underwater, so this is a big success for the divers that have been brought in from fresno. this commercial dive team has been able to successfully hook up to the vehicle and pull them out of the canal. so the question now is what is inside that 2003 silver toyota carolla which appears to be the vehicle which appears on the right side of the screen. divers are able to go down there and look through a video monitor and identify the license plate of the toyota. that's why they know that is the car that belonged to jose

rodriguez the suspect accused of kidnapping 4-year-old juliani cardena from his grandmother: you see that toyota sliding back into the water. hopefully it is still attached so they can eventually bring it up to the shoreline. investigators will then look inside to see if the bodies of the suspect and 4-year-old boy are inside. >> searchers here are working carefully but they also have to work quickly because the water in the delta canal was lowered specifically for this effort. they only have about 20 minutes before the water starts to rise again. most of the work is done, the vehicle does appear to be up and out of the water, they are giving it another big yank out of the water there. but again, the big question here, who or what is in the vehicle. we expect to have that answered in just moments. we are live at the scene, we will bring you that information just as soon as we get it.

we continue to follow breaking news happening in patterson where just about four four minutes ago we brought you pictures of the sheriff's taking out a vehicle. >> the question now is how soon will investigators know if they don't know already, and how soon they will let us know what was inside of that toyota carolla that belonged to rodriguez. ken pritchett has been live at the scene all day long.
5:48 pm
any idea when we're going to find out what is inside that car. >> reporter: it is my idea that the police chief will be down here to tell us shortly. you may have a better view of those cars. there were three cars pulled out of the canal within the last five minutes. one of them appeared to be silver in color, a newer car. we know that the suspect's car was down underneath that water. we know that from the sheriff's department because their understood water cameras spotted the license plate. from my vantage point i could only see it was a silver car pulled out of the water. you may have a better view of it, i could not make up the make or model of that car. at this point what i can see is around that silver car there are investigators and sheriff department personnel surrounding that car, inspecting that car that seems to be the one they have of
5:49 pm
interest. the other two were called aside. this all came about early this morning at about 11:00 when the sheriff's department dive team after searching 12 miles of the delta mendota canal came back out here to give this area a second look. this area of the canal where there are some under water tubes, basically 15-foot wide square tubes that go under ground and deliver water from the delta mendota canal. they decided to give that area a second look because this is 100 yards away from where tire tracks were seen going into the water where a witness says he spotted that car, the suspect's car one similar to it drive into the water 45 minutes after the january 18th abduction of 4- year-old juliani cardenas. the suspect in this case, this can kidnapping who according to the family snatched juliani up
5:50 pm
from his grandmother's up. 27-year-old esteban rodriguez, he was driving a 2003 toyota carolla. one of those wheels was a donut. you can match this up to that description. it is dark, we are a distance from it but three cars pulled out of the water a few moments ago. one of them appears to be a newer model silver sedan. >> we know that ken. from our vantage point as well. it's very difficult to tell whether or not it's exactly a toyota carolla but we know it's a silver car similar to a toyota. win thing we want to keep in mind, you've been at these types of scenes many times ken, if they bring a yellow tarp or any kind of a sheeting to try to shield cameras from that, that would be a strong indication that there could be some bodies inside that vehicle. >> yeah. go ahead ken. >> áeut would indeed. it is important -- it would
5:51 pm
indeed. and it's important to note the sonar was able to see the license plate of the car but was not able to see inside the car. the sheriff said a few moments ago that the only way they would know is when they bring the car to the surface, if indeed that is the car. they should know that by now and we should have the answer to that shortly. >> ken as you were bringing us the latest developments from the scene at the canal. i know the sheriff told you earlier, he was saddened by the discovery of this vehicle certainly even though he said we knew we would find it here after the witness reported it going in. rob roth is at juliani's home. there's a note on the family's door that says we ask for our privacy. obviously the family they are inside the house watching this as well. from where you are, it looks like we should be hopefully getting some answers on what is inside that vehicle. you don't see anybody coming toward to notify you or any of the other reporters to notify you yet? >> not yet. the sheriff has had a couple of
5:52 pm
briefings. it was shortly after 11:00 when they discovered the car. at that point he alerted us that they had spotted a car matching the license plate. he said that already through an fbi agent who works with the family, they had already notified the family that the car was in the water. the outstanding question is, whether there was anyone inside frankly. >> and the interesting thing right now ken, i don't know if you can see from your vantage point. we have the advantage of a camera zoomed in, maybe we have a bettest perspective. a diver has gone back under the water, looks like he has a helmet. >> i can see that. >> any idea what that is about? >> i would not venture a guess as to why a diver would be going back into the water if in fact, they have pulled the car out of the water that they are looking for. >> obviously things could have been falling out of vehicle, they could be trying to recover, could be evidence as
5:53 pm
part of this case or probably just technically from a commercial diving equipment that they may need to remove. but certainly a fascinating recovery operation and you have to give credit to this dive team. a commercial dive team out of tpres fresno of all places has been called in to help. ken pritchett live in patterson, we're going to have more on this coming up in a few minutes at 6:00 p.m. >> and we're going to go quickly to the weather to see what chief meteorologist bill martin will be saying. >> partly to mostly cloudy for your saturday. that's your day on the weekend. then watch out here comes this weather system, it tees up for saturday night. the rain comes down to the tune of a .25 to .75 of an inch of rain. it is the first weather system in the next couple of weeks and the first significant rainfall in about 20 to 25 days.
5:54 pm
helps scour the fog out. overnight little more goes on, you see something here saturday morning, moving through the delta. and that's some significant light shower activity then gone. i bet you we see a winter weather adds vise reu in the -- advisory this weekend. if you're traveling that way, be prepared for that type of situation. and in the forecast highs for your saturday which will be the nicest day on your bay area weekend. cool 50s, clouds move in, five day forecast brings rain in on sunday. that's it. then it dries out again next weekend, but good news. we have a little rain in here on sunday. .25, .50 tops. we go back live to the delta canal. the scene has changed significantly. remember it was only 10 minutes ago that divers were able to
5:55 pm
pull the cluster of three vehicles together and what appeared to be sort of the silver sedan the carolla hanging on the back end. you can see here, they have those bright lights shining. there is a car on its side. we see a lot of people clustered around it. we saw people around the scene standing around the car presumably trying to figure out what or who is in the car. people have walked away from the vehicle. and what we're hoping for is an update on the scene. there is one question left here and that is, who or what is inside that car and ultimately answering the question, what happened to 4-year-old juliani. >> stanislaus sheriff christianson is supposed to come to our own ken pritchett, there he is now, let's go to

him.. we're >> the suspect's vehicle. the third vehicle status is yet to be determined. unfortunately the vehicle is empty. jose and juliani are not in the car. now, remember that our witness who at this point remains our most credible lead saw this car being driven into the canal, saw a boy and a man with the car. the windows of the vehicle were down at least two of them. so we're going to continue our search at this point, most likely our next step beyond tonight is to come back and continue to search the siphon just to be absolutely sure. we believe there's probably another vehicle in the siphon in the middle blocked but we don't know for sure. so we're going to come back and search it again. hypothetically based on all of the statements from the witnesses, the evidence, the

cooperation and the credibility there is a possibility that jose and juliani are probably still in the canal and some where downstream. as always, i have been cautiously hopeful that we'll bring juliani home alive. but there's absolutely no information or everyday or anything else that tells us that this car went in the canal and jose fled the scene. he's not sophisticated enough, doesn't have the infrastructure, doesn't have the financing, doesn't have the support to pull off that kind of an abduction and here we are a week later or better than a week later and there's still no sign of the suspect and juliani. so what are our next steps? we're going to continue to search the siphon. we're going to continue to search the canal downstream and we're going to continue to look and hold out hope. go ahead. i'll take your questions. >> was there any way the bodies could have come out of the car? >> there's no way to no.

absolutely no way to know. only that two windows were down. we haven't finished inspecting is vehicle. detectives have to go through the inside. the car is badly damaged because of being in the siphon skwroz how difficult is it to find bodies in this canal. it's huge, it's hard enough to find cars, how hard is it to find bodies? >> it is very, very difficult. the temperature of the water 42, 45 degrees means that you're probably not going to have body surface for at least 14 days. that's why we're going to continue to search, my concern how are is as all of you know little juliani is not a very big 4-year-old he's all of 40 pounds. that's going to be problematic for us but we're going to continue to search and we're going to continue to look. certainly the family, tabitha deserves every effort we can to bring her son home. >> sheriff did you say you're going to continue to search tonight or tomorrow? >> most likely we will continue our search tomorrow. right now the team is gathered

over behind you and they are working together to determine what our next steps will be. obviously putting anybody down in the siphon at night is too dangerous. >> so it's you're belief that juliani and jose are not alive. >> based on everything we know, the witnesses statement, the evidence, the corroboration, everything. we believe our witness, he saw the car go in the car. there's the car, he saw a man and a boy in the car, it's likely we will find them in the canal. >> could they be submerged or stuck in a gate. >> hard to tell. there's a lot of places where cars can get hung up, cars can get hung up like the siphon. that was the problem for us. after a second or third sonar search when we finally looked again. it is a very, very
