area to search simply because of the construction, the design, the water conditions and everything we've been fighting against now since the abduction. >> how far down the canal do you search? because this body of water moves very rapidly, where do you stop. >> authorities have been notified all the bay down to mendota, california. all the way down is where we'll continue to look. >> what was the process like of bringing the cars out. were there any problems, how long did it take from when you started to when you pulled the car out. >> are you talking about the can't operation? >> yes. >> the dive operation began at 4:05 p.m. you saw the cars being brought out just a little while ago. less than two hours we had all three hours ago. >> did it go smoothly? >> absolutely. we didn't have any problems at all. >> how long will it take to drain the canal. >> there's no way to do that.
6:01 pm
there's no upstream to hold all this water. the water authority called us and said they were at critical levels and they needed to release the water. so you're going to start to see the water start to rise again very quickly. when they typically drain the canal for maintenance there's months of planning. our holding capabilities are lower than they usually are. we're going to have regular patrol searches down the canal. the highway patrol is committed to continue to fly regular patrol flights weather permitting. >> sheriff, will you be able to tell us if the seat buckles were used will you be able to tell us that? >> not at this time. >> what will your search team have to do besides -- >> i'm sorry it's cold out here, say it again. >> what will your search entail tomorrow? >> we're going to continue to thoroughly search that siphon
6:02 pm
and the other two blocks. we want to make absolutely sure that there's nothing left, that there's no other cars and potentially that nothing is hung up down there like bodies. >> what time did they start? >> that will be up to the team, i don't have that yet. we still have to round table with all of our teams what our next steps will be. aeb i wanted to come over here and share the latest details with you so i don't have that information yet rich. >> how are divers expected to perform, i know you mentioned -- >> two divers. two divers in the water then we obviously had safety officers and back up divers standing by. >> sheriff is there anything in the car that leads you to believe that maybe they were dead before they went into the water. >> we haven't thoroughly searched the car yet. detectives are in the process of doing that now. we don't know if there's any other evidence as the question was asked about seat belt, we simply don't have that information yet until we have a
6:03 pm
chance to get into that vehicle. >> which windows were down? >> i know there was one on the left and one on the right but i don't know which ones of the four were down. >> were they broken out? >> i don't have that information. again the car is badly damaged from having been in the siphon and we're going to -- we'll be able to get that information as the detectives have a chance to go through the car. >> is there a possibility that water could be -- that the car actually -- >> no. absolutely anything would have been pulled into the siphon. either objects would have gone right through or hung up in the siphon just like this car was. >> after a week, they could be down the canal. >> or further. that's why we're beginning to go down and search the siphon again and we're going to continue our efforts downstream. >> if you can search the siphon, are you going to search
6:04 pm
any further down the canal? >> yeah, the continuing use of dive operations further down downstream is not going to be used. because we would need an exact location. theoretically, if this goes the way i think it's going to go, we're going to have to wait for the bodies to surface and for someone to report that to us. >> so per your officers and deputy social security this very emotional. >> certainly it's emotional. this has been emotional for everybody in the case.
6:05 pm
myself included. our team has worked very passionly. their determination is incredible. but a lot of them have children juliani's age. any time children are involved because you desperately want to bring them home alive. we wanted to find little juliani alive. the reality is that simply is not going to happen right now based on everything we know and the time that's gone by, the chances of that happening are diminishing expenentially. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm ken wayne. frank somerville is off tonight. you have talked about the sheriff talk about what's been developing at the delta canal. the vehicle involved in the
6:06 pm
cardenas abduction has been located but no bodies were found in that vehicle. ken pritchett joins us now live. >> reporter: you can see a live picture we have of the car up shore. the suspect's vehicle that was pulled out about 15 minutes ago. we just heard from sheriff adam christianson, once that car, that 2003 toyota carolla was brought up on shore, they looked inside the car and they did not see juliani cardena the 4-year-old or 28 esteban cardenas inside the car. two of the windows on that car were rolled down. now the question is, were those windows broken out or were they rolled down and that's something that the sheriff said they have to take a look at at this point. it also raises the question, was rodriguez or juliani in the car when it went into the
6:07 pm
water. the sheriff emphasized once again that his confidence in the witness stating that they say that car go into the water 45 minutes after the abduction. that witness saw a man and a child inside the car when the car went into the water. the sheriff says at this point they have divers back in this underground, what they call a siphon. it's a 15-foot wide tube that was under water. authorities will double check that tube to see if there's bodies in there. if that fail, they will resume their search of the delta canal tomorrow. at this point they are looking for bodies. the sheriff says that, every bit of information, every bit of evidence he has suggests that both the suspect and four- year-old juliani cardenas were in that car and that their
6:08 pm
bodies are in the delta mend torque a canal. that's according to the sheriff, he says one more piece of evidence was that from the very beginning, after the abduction they have not received any kind of electronic signal or use of a cell phone to credit cards from rodriguez who he described as a man who was not sophisticated enough to pull off an abduction and simply disappear. so, at this point after pulling the car from underwater after a week long search in the delta canal and seeing that there was no one inside, this recovery effort appears to continue. ken-- >> grim business we're talking about here ken because the sheriff mentioned it takes about 14 days for a body to surface in that canal. it's been 10 days since juliani was kidnapped. so while the divers are in there and hope to locate something before that, we may have to wait a little bit longer before we get finality to all of this.
6:09 pm
>> the sheriff expanded on that a little bit ken. he said that it takes 14 days because of the cold water of the delta mendota canal. it is swift moving water in addition to that. this water is dangerous for divers to go into. even with all of their equipment it's dangerous to go into because this water is moving so swiftly down this canal. and they have difficult even locating cars in this canal. even though they pulled out more than a dozen in this week long search. they had to return to this original location one week later. an area they thought was clear of cars and they found three more in just the past hour. and they found another one this morning. so the difficulty of finding a car alone is clear. finding bodies in this canal that stretches for miles and miles will be a daunting task it seems. >> all right, ken pritchett
6:10 pm
reporting live from the delta mendota canal. ken thanks very much. we will check back for more updates later in this newscast. it's been an agonizing wait for the family and friends of the missing boy still don't know where he is. community members are gathering to offer their support. >> reporter: within the past hour we've been told that relatives of juliani cardenas are in the family home praying. we've also told juliani's mother is outside of sacramento taping an interview with nancy grace. friends and neighbors have been dropping by all day to offer comfort to the mother of tabitha cardenas. >> it's moment by moment. >> reporter: jose rodriguez the ex-boyfriend of juliani's mother grabbed the boy 10 days ago and spaed sped off in a
6:11 pm
toyota carolla. the mother of the child said she was sure that the car would not be found in the canal, but today it was. >> it could happen to anybody. >> reporter: patterson residents say the abduction has brought the small community even closer together. there's been searches and vigils and people bringing food. >> the mood in the home is still hopeful. and they hope for the child will come home safely. we understand the sheriff's have a job to do that information will come to us when it comes to us. but there's still a lot of hope in that home that this will come out with a happy ending. >> reporter: the red cross is also here supporting the family and the neighborhood. in patterson, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. the mother of the suspect jose esteban rodriguez is waiting anxiously to see what happened to her son and the missing boy. >> right now i don't have any
6:12 pm
more comments to say until the car is come out of the canal. and i figure, i am not doing good at all. okay i'm very nervous and i'm very scared. >> reporter: donna avila added earlier today before this news of the car coming out that she had faith that jose and juliani were alive because the fbi had told her the searches have not found any bodies as of yet. >> 4-year-old juliani cardenas was abducted 10 days ago. police say the astranged boyfriend of juliani's mother kidnapped the boy. the next day a farm worker told police he saw a car matching the description of the suspect's car plunge into the canal with a man and a child inside. by wednesday search crews pulled 12 cars from that canal. however none was related to the case. divers returned to the murky water this morning and found rodriguez's submerged car near
