popular tourist spots. ktvus jade hernandez is outside of a souvenir shop where it happened. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. the souvenir shop doesn't have a name on the outside of it and in fact, the sign said discounted perfume. last night, police swarmed the building investigating a deadly double shooting inside and that happened before 8:30 last night and the souvenir shop is at 269 jefferson street and two store employees were shot dead. a man and woman. the san francisco police arrested one man in connection with the shooting and the police spokesman we spoke to last night could not give us details on how that man was apprehended or the connection between the suspected shooter or some store employees. the spokesman told us that police are not looking for the suspects. >> we don't been the motive into the particular crime, but, it's something that does not normally happen around here and

this is a huge tragedy for the city. >> reporter: and that is unclear, the motive. fisherman's wharf is unquiet. as soon as we hear more information, we'll pass it to you. live in san francisco, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. today, the u.s. is sending chartered flights into egypt to evacuate americans from the increasingly unstable country. this is the seventh day protestors are taking to the streets, calling for president hosni mubarak to step down and they're asking for u.s. support. >> dear people of mesh, you have the right to choose your president. we need, need to have it once in our life. once in our life and i want to choose. >> hundreds of foreigners are setting up camp in cairo's airport, waiting for a chance to get a flight out. the bay area is home to thousands of people from egypt who are closely following the political turmoil in their homeland. many of the 600 members of the islamic center in oakland are

either from egypt or have family in the country. some say the internet has played an important role to the outside world. >> and they have an idea. how is life of a free man or a free woman to live in a country but they don't see that. >> in hayward, members of the church included a prayer for egypt in their sunday morning service. they worry if there is a regime change in egypt, what that may mean for the christian minority. at this time of crisis in egypt, it could reshape dynamics in the middle east and there is an unprecedented meeting of u.s. ambassadors today. top envoys from nearly all of america's embassies, consulates and posts in 180 countries will gather at the state department. it was called to discuss foreign policy privates for the

year. this is the first of its kind, the global conference. the mother of 4-year-old giuliani cardenas is convinced her son is still alive and is asking for the public to continue looking for him. at a vigil in modesto, the mother distributed flyers and asked people to post them on the cars and thinks the ex- boyfriend might be disguising him. she's asking everyone to keep an eye out for the suspect so, jose esteban rodriguez. >> we don't know where he is. my gut tells me my son is still alive and i need help, you know, for people to keep their eyes out. >> when rodriguez's car was pulled from the canal on friday, two windows were open and there was no sign of the boy or rodriguez inside. the sheriff's office believes their bodies are somewhere in the 99-mile canal and they're focussing their efforts there. tonight, governor jerry brown lays out his plan for fixing california's budget

problems in his state-of-the- state address and we're hearing the governor will try to convince californians to go along with his plan to extend expiring cars and taxes. there is a guarantee the mean will go to things like education, he believes the voters will agree. >> the next generation is valuable to invest in and if they could say that and keep their word, we could save that. >> and less taxes would be great. at the same time, i would understand if taxes needed to be raised. >> so far, governor brown seems to have one support from californians for his new frugal approach to governing. and that is like taking away government-supplied cell phones and cars for many state workers and replaced a fancy conference table in his office with a large picnic table and benches. you can watch governor brown's speech here on ktvu channel 2.

it will be a part of the ktvu channel 2 news at 5 and streamed live on our website, ktvu.com. megwhitman is -- meg whitman is set to make her second appearance since losing the gubernatorial race. she will speak to 50 to 100 women executives and entrepreneurs. the appearance is close to the press. earlier this month, whitman was named to the packard board of directors. >> we have to be divided! >> reporter: nearly 1,000 people filled the streets near palm springs to protest a seminar sponsored by a pair of billionaire brothers. 25 people were arrested for protesting. each year, they invite 200 conservative wealthy activists to their event and they have been largely criticized because of their funding against the fight against global warming laws and the large amounts of money they have given to

conservative causes. it's deadline day for the sports program at uc berkeley. the university will decide whether to re-enstate baseball and other sports programs scheduled for elimination this summer. a group called save cal sports has raised $15 million in pledges and that may not be enough. >> and there are commitments for $25 million. >> they're going to go with a significant amount of monthy to show him in hopes of good faith demonstrating that we are, you know, we're moving the needle in the direction of the numbers it's going to take to get re- enstatement into the athletic department. >> the chance lawyer announced the proposed cuts last fall to save animated $4 million a year and some faculty members of the sports program shouldn't be immuned from the budget crisis that forced cutbacks and layoffs. time now is 4:38. we want to go to sal to check

with clearing skies. 39, san rafael and redwood city and in oakland. the system is moving to the south and east, and leaving behind some moisture and we're going to see it in the valley through the morning hours and some haze as well and by the afternoon, looking at plenty of sunshine, the high pressure is quickly rebuilding into the area. we have a dry week ahead and gusty winds and in fact, some of our higher elevations could see wind gusts to 40 and 50 miles per hour and we'll track that for you. the afternoon highs today, 58 expected in oakland; 57 for hayward; 57, san rafael, upper 50s, san mateo and 60 degrees in san jose and morgan hill and we'll look at the five-day forecast and show you whether or not we're going up or down from here. more in just awhile.

her long lost father who was living on the streets of san francisco. the 23-year-old kelly christianson came to the city this weekend after spotting her dad in a newspaper article about san francisco's homeless. early yesterday, she found him in the city's mission district. marty christ yenson left his family 20 years ago while battling a serious drinking problem and thought they would never want to see him again. his daughter's trip to san francisco proved him wrong. a southern california man is in jail this morning after authorities say that he planned to blow up one of the nation's largest mosques. 63-year-old roger stockhand was arrested last monday in the parking lot of the islamic center of america in suburban detroit. he had a large amount of fireworks in his car and someone called police the night before after they overheard him make threats against muslims. >> we're supposed to live in peace and one respect the other. i don't understand how somebody think of something like that,

really. it's like unbelievable. >> investigators believe he was acting alone and say he was -- has a long history of anti- government activities. and the federal government is urging half of all americans to drastically cut back on the amount of salt that we eat every day and new standards are the harshest for people 51 years and over, all african- americans and anyone suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease and the government said they should reduce sodium intake to a half a teaspoon per day and everyone else should get a teaspoon. most americans get about one and a third teaspoons every day. a new study shows dallas cowboy fans might feel grateful their team is not in sunday's super bowl. that is because a new study shows that sports fans feel more stressd when their team loses a key game at home and that could lead to more heart attacks. usc researchers say when nfl teams played in a super bowl in

mysterious death. john wheeler iii was last scene on december 30th, the body discovered in a delaware landfill the next day. surveillance video shows him in a parking garage days before his death looking disoriented. last week, the state medical examiner's office said he was assaulted and died of blunt force trauma. and the astronaut husband of congresswoman gabrielle giffords will decide in the coming weeks if he will join's nasa shuttle mission as scheduled. mark kel, the commander of april's endeavour motion, has been on leave to tend to his wife since the january 8th shooting in tucson that killed six people and injuring 13 others. giffords was transferred to a rehabilitation facility in houston 10 days ago after undergoing hospital treatment. nasa said that kelly is expected to make his decision by mid-february. a scottish man has quite the story to tell after surviving a 1,000-foot fall off of a mountain and when rescuers

schwarzenegger. daly city could soon join the growing number of bay area cities that have decided to ban plastic grocery bags. the councilman plans to propose an ordinance in two weeks, banning plastic bags at supermarkets and stores with more than 10,000 square feet. the councilman said that his measure would force shoppers to pay at least 10 cents for a paper grocery bag, plastic industry groups will file a lawsuit to block such regulations. the san francisco giants 2010 world series trophy makes a stop in the east bay. the trophy has been travelling the country the last month making stops as far away as new york city. today, the trophy will be on display at the center for the arts on civic center drive in walnut creek and that is from noon to 2:30. and another earthquake in the east bay overnight. the shaking that is rattling some people's nerves. and there has been some deadly violence at fisherman's
