good afternoon. at this hour a suspect has been arrested for a double homicide at san francisco fisherman wharf. jade hernandez is live there with the business rivally that may have been behind it. good afternoon, jade. >> reporter: good afternoon. we have new information from the san francisco police department this afternoon. first, we are live in front of the shop where this double shooting took place. and flowers already mark the spot. police say a local merchant feeling competition was killing his business, took his rage too far by knocking off his competitors. the shootings motive didn't surprise nearby shop employees. >> we work with each other. not like that. >> reporter: the competitive nature of operating a souvenir shop here is not new. but the way one merchant handles his argument between another pulled san francisco police to 269 jefferson street

last night. an asian merchant came inside and opened fire and killed the two employees inside. >> last night i was here working. we saw childrenning popping pops on the floor. it wasn't. >> reporter: the asian man died at the scene. the two were targeted over an argument of selling the same goods. >> we want to make clear there is no outstanding suspect. this is an isolated incident. >> reporter: about 20 minutes ago san francisco police released the name of the man they have arrested in connection with this double fatal shooting. 56-year-old hon riwu shortly after the shooting. he was arrested. the victims have been identified at the fallows. qiong. and peng. i want to bring you live back

out here. the pearl factory is a business right next door not shop. and the owner closed the shop after finding out what happened that note on the door says our store will be closed today out of respect to our neighbors. we will reopen tomorrow. and san francisco police just told me this afternoon that they are looking for two visitors who spoke to police shortly after the shooting. they were inside when the shooting took place. they are 30-year-old hispanic male and female about late 20s early 30s. police are hoping those two people will contact police again. investigators have a few more questions for them. reporting live jade hernandez. >> thank you, jade. three dogs were killed by a pet store fire. firefighters were called to puppy paws. three puppies were killed but the firefighters were able to save seven other dogs. investigators are still

tallying up the damage. >> unfortunately they will be out of business for a short period of time. there is no structural damage it's all contents that is damaged. >> the cause of the fire sun known. attorneys begin delivering their opening statements in the trial of fernando lofland. he is accused of murdering his son. he told police he dropped the baby while taking him out of the bathtub. the coroner found more injuries from repeated hittings. a somber ceremony is planned for tonight to mark the day 13-year-old ilene vanished. it has been 138 years since she disappeared. a candle light vigil will be held in dublin. family members say the jc dugard case has given them

hope. activists in egypt are calling for a million man marchs in cairo and alexandria tomorrow. it is not business as usual in cairo. banks, schools, and the stock market were shut for a second working day today. it's the fourth day of a complete internet shutdown. people are also teaing with a food shortage and long lines are forming outside of bakeries. nicole collins has information on u.s. evacuations. >> reporter: a bid afternoon curfew thousands of egypts took to streets in the seventh day of protest demanding that hosni mubarak to step down. while mubarak made changes to his government over the weekend and swore in a new cabinet today, the protests rage on. >> people of america, you have the right to choose your

that number is expected to rise. in washington, i'm nicole collins. iran wants sarah shore to return there to stand trial trial this coming sunday onest by imagine charges. the three were detained by iranian border guards in july 2009. shore was released on compassion ground. she spoke this morning on whether she would go back. >> i haven't finalized my position. i'm still discussing it with my lawyer. it's a hard choice to make. if the iranian authorities deem it necessary to have a trial, i feel confident that my friend and fiance will be found innocent. they have done nothing wrong. >> iran as warned if shore does not return it will seize the $500,000 bail paid for its release. it's not clear who provided the

bail money. . >> a new fundraising campaign has been launched in the south bay to pay for repairs of a vandalized veteran memorial. the city is about $31,000 short of the money it needs to cover the repairs. next month city officials plan to cover the board in vinyl featuring images until the memorial can be fixed. meg whitman is scheduled to make a rare appearance tonight. she will attend the womens executive round table in redwood city. she will speak to 50 to 100 executive women. it's only her second public appearance since losing the race earlier this month. whitman was named to the hewlett packard board of directors. more than 150uc berkeley student athletes were expected to find out today if they were

able to play their sports. >> reporter: good afternoon i spoke to the university official about an hour ago. he explains it's complicated because not only is there a lot of money involved but there is federal title nine compliances to comply with. we are told a decision could come the week of february 7th. we are standing in front of cal baseball feed. cal baseball is one of five teams who's future is at stake here. all of them got the ax earlier this year. actually last year when the university announced they were cutting the sports teams to save money. but about a month after that decision was announced a group of alumni and supporters stepped in to raise money. the group saved cal sports has raised $16 million to fund the teams. the university previously said the group needed $25 million as well as a long-term plan to

create an endowment. we are told there could be some flexibility with those numbers. this morning the student athletes will have a definite answer soon. >> we have an obligation to provide them with clarity and the uncertainty has been extreme lady bill stating. i think the anticipation is by the end of next week. >> reporter: one of cal baseball assistant coaches told us this morning that his players are taking the uncertainty in stride. he described the mood at this weekends practices. >> we don't know what's going to happen. we can't control certain things. what we can control is how we go about this year. and how we prepare this year. they have a chip on their shoulder and they want to gout go out with a bang -- they want to go out with a bang. >> reporter: cal's gymnastic team carry the out with the season. under title nine requirements

a new phase of the central subway project is under way this afternoon. they will be shut down today as crews work under ground to reroot utility lines. the work is expected to take a year and a half to finish. job seekers are meeting with potential employers right now at a job fair in the south bay. people are lining up for an opportunity to talk face to face with company representatives. organizers are encouraging attendees to bring several copies of their resumes and dress professionally. one skilled applicant is hoping to turn her luck around. >> it's very tough. i have been searching for three

years. definitely not giving up. hoping this job fair will help me land a job. >> the job fair is being hold held at the double tree hotel. after a two-decade long search a fresno woman has been reunited with her homeless father. it's a story we first told you about on friday. 23-year-old kelly chrisonson was reunited with her first marcy christianson on friday. she saw her father featured in a newspaper article about homeless people displaced when the old transbay terminal was demolished. marty left his family 20 years ago while battling alcoholism. good afternoon. giving you a live look at what is going on over the bay. you can see the bay bridge here. that haze overhead. we do have a little bit of fog and low cloud hugging the coastline at this hour. taking a closer view.

you see the winds generally light. picking up to 10-12 miles an hour. this is where we are watching low cloud cover. half-moon bay mostly cloudy. we are partly to mostly cloudy. that north easterly breeze should keep the clouds at bay. we shouldn't see it actually spread any farther than that. meanwhile into the afternoon most of us dealing with mostly sunny skies this morning we watched the high clouds roll through. they were beginning to clear out pretty good in time for the second half of our day. it was a very cold start in some cases. we slipped all the way into the 30s. napa and santa rosa dealing with dense fog. concord 57. right now but dealing with chilly weather this morning and a little bit of dense fog for you there. 53 right now oakland and san francisco. our afternoon highs will be warmer than that. seasonal temperatures expected for the second half of our day. wide spread 50s from areas like napa and into vallejo.

57 expected this afternoon in san francisco. even low 60s out there. santa rosa 61. 60 for mountain view and san jose. we have changes in the forecast. for tomorrow high pressure will begin to amplify over the great basin. our bay area hills could see gusts reaching 40-50 miles an hour. the gusty conditions expected to develop by tomorrow and again it will be the higher elevations that see the worst of it. your five-day forecast though no rain in sight. it looks like a prolonged period of dry wind. be prepared for very similar conditions from this morning. wednesday morning we should blow out the fog because of the strong winds. all the way into friday we are looking at 64-degrees. there is breaking news out of florida a federal judge has just struck down president obama's health care overhaul as

unconstitutional. 26 states sued to block the bill that the president signed into law last march and today roger vincent sited with the state. he says it violates peoples rights by forcing them to buy health insurance by 2014. administration attorneys argue the case should be dismissed because the states had no standing to challenge the law. it's likely to go to the u.s. supreme court. sanitary officials plan to with hold payment to a contractor that may be responsible for a sewage spill last month. although eco-terrorism may have been -- they say a pipe was crushed in two spots right next to a newly installed pipe. the sewage district says it will not pay the contractor who did the work. the epa will make a decision on

whether criminal activity played a role. it's san francisco's several sit by law working? it was hard pressed to see anyone lounging on the sidewalk. business owners there say they are seeing a difference even though the city won't start enforcing the new ordnance until next month. the civil sidewalks law went into effect on december 17th and makes it illegal to sit or lie on a public sidewalk between 7:00 and 11:00 p.m.. the federal government today released new nutritional guidelines that could change the taste of your food. the new standards focus on strategies to reduce obesity. sodium. nearly half are being asked to cut down to half a teaspoon. even people that don't make a conscious effort to cut back may get less sodium. >> now we are saying let's decrease the sodium in the

food. so what we will find is products made with less salt. >> the guidelines were last changed in 2005. that's when product makers were required to list transfat on food labels. something many people have not heard of before. blood donors may get a generous reward. they will give away packages of 12 pairs of free movie tickets. each week they will hold a drawing for four winners. donors must be in gold health. weigh between 110 pounds and 17 years old. 16-year-old donors need permission from their parent. two reports out today could have you feeling more optimistic about the economy. mayor ed lee picks up the ball. the tactic he plans to use to keep the 49ers in san francisco.

there are two good indicators about the u.s. economy today. the commerce department says consumer spending was up .07%. that is a little bit better. the increase marks the sixth consecutive month spending has risen. that is important because consumer spending accounts for 70% of all economic activity.

also out this morning personal income rose. the commerce department recorded .7 increase. analysts say the two reports give americans more confidence to spend again but some the spending increase was nearly double the jump in mechanic. san francisco's new mayor says he is ready to keep the 49ers in san francisco. mayor ed lee tells the san francisco chronicle he is determined to stop the niners from moving to santa clara. he says he hopes to forge a personal relationship with jed york and convince to move into a new stadium in hunters point in san francisco instead. this could be you. the san francisco giants 2010 world series trophy is in walnut creek today. the trophy has been traveling around the country in the last month. making stops as far away as new york city. it will be on display on civic
