travel ahead. jim vargus, ktvu.com. that storm is affecting 30 states and one in every 3 americans and bringing more snow and cold that is moving from the midwest to the east coast. we have more. >> reporter: the ground hog calls for an early spring and mother nature says maybe not. a massive winter storm has left its mark on dozens of states from the midwest to the northeast and even in places where the storm has stopped and the digout is under way, concerns about frigid temperatures and how to clear roadways. >> we have a lot of snow out there that still has to be cleared and moved out of the way and it will be sometime before it is all gone. >> reporter: chicago was socked overnight and well into wednesday with strong winds and frigid temperatures and heavy snow crippling the cities iconic thorough fairs including michigan avenue and lake shore drive. >> the results of this rapid series of events was that we had hundreds of vehicles that

were stuck and or abandoned on lake shore drive for many hours during the night including several buses. >> the storm has gridlock air traffic impacting operations and canceling thousands of flights across some of the nation's busiest airports including new york kennedy and la guarda and boston logan and chicago o'hare. >> i am supposed to go to minneapolis but i got stuck here. i arrived yesterday. >> reporter: a big concern in new england, snow that is piling up after storm after storm has pounded the region over the last month. >> this massive storm is moving across the midwest and into the northeast. it has done so over the past 24 hours and to give you some idea of how big the storm is, take a look at this satellite image from nasa. the storm is covering 30 states from new mexico to maine with eight states under blizzard warnings and the storm is

affecting a third of the american population and has left hundreds of thousands of people without power. and that storm is on the move. let's go to our chief meteorologist phil martin that will show us where it is heading. >> the storm is moving out but what is happening is that the cold air left behind that front, that very strong storm is staying in the central rockies and let's go to storm tracker two and i want to zoom in. right now in denver it is two degrees and there are wind chill warnings, two degrees in denver it is going well below freezing tonight probably in the minus five, minus ten range. omaha, nebraska, 3 degrees and the main weather is now moving off towards the east up towards the northeast and it is a winter storm warning throughout the northern new england states and then here in the appalachians we got a wind advisory. what does it mean? trouble for your travel because you will have icing on the runways and issues with that in chicago and issues with backups in new york. the big storm moving out but it's leaving a lot of cold air

investors watched the events unfold in egypt. the dow jones rose 188 points to close at 12,041 and the nasdaq fell to 749. a school principal that was fund down on campus has died. police say that 50-year-old sam la carera the principal was shot by a school janitor. the school was locked down and police arrested the janitor at his home about one hour later. no children were hurt and have been released to their parents. the sheriff says the motive is unclear. the bush administration never did set a drinking motor standard. hundreds of people that live in the bay area are drinking bottled water and the move in washington that may

after a state order inspection , there are gas line leaks. there are records to verify the safety of the natural gas lines. pg and e discovered 59 leaks. they were grade one leaks which are dangerous. however, pg and e says they are rarely the cause after rupture like the one that happened in san bruno. ten years there was a chemical found in the water. officials are taking action to restrict the chemical. barb buckster says it is long time for action. >> the bush administration never set a drinking standard leaving millions of americans at risk. >> the chemical is used in fire works and other problems. it is linked with infant brain

highway 10 and 15 at rancho kookomundo. some lanes were shut down for hours while crews cleaned up the wreckage. the chp says the 58 miles per hour winds were the strongest to hit that region in months. to restore power to some homes in the oakland hills has taken longer than expected after a huge pine tree fell. it hit power lines on sky way line cutting off electricity to people this morning. we got a phone call from the family that usually picks our kids up and say we can't get down to your road there's a tree blocking it and we had to finish things out. crews have been working since dawn to repair those downed power lines. they expected the work to be done by 4:00 and just got off with the phone of a representative of pg and e and they are still at work. the tree had to be removed

until the repairs could be started. well onto the weather, another beautiful day in the bay area and we were talking about the situation in the midwest and back east, what a contrast compared to our weather. >> i mentioned last night when they are cold we are usually hot and when we are wet they are usually dry. the jet stream is like a roller coaster and we are in a ridge of high pressure. temperatures above the average, we had 70s today and lots of 60s, no fog and some wind. we go outside and the only weather feature i can find visible are the clouds, a little bit of clouds by port rinna and you see that's nothing, just a few high clouds and moving off. we got a nice day ahead or a nice week ahead and there's no rain in the forecast. let's go to san jose. temperature right now in san jose 59 degrees, 61 in mountain view. it is just kind of above average temperatures. more current temperatures for

we're monitoring the central square in cairo and supporters of president mubarak are charging against anti- government protesters. the violence has escalated. as of right now we know that three people are dead and some 600 others are injured. it looks quiet but earlier we were bringing you pictures of people charging on camel and horseback and throwing molatov cocktails. this is after president mubarak refusing to step down. we will bring you more on ktvt at six. a young graduate student from the bay area is hoping to fly out of egypt tomorrow. sarah layton talked to us by phone from cairo about the mood on the streets. >> it was confrontational and the the supporters were bringing a different energy to

the whole thing. they were there to get into people's faces and yell at them. >> layton is 22 years old and is from el saba, a graduate student studying in cairo on a fellowship. but in recent days she has been an eyewitness taking photos of what is going on and calling the bay area radio stations of the uprising in egypt. >> the attacks and this outbreak of violence is not enough to make me feel not safe in my apartment or neighborhood but worried about what is coming next. >> sarah hopes to return to cairo next month to resume her studies but the situation now is so unstable that her plans are in limbo. a new program got under way to help businesses in central oakland to be more energy efficent.

the mayorattended the kickoff and it is hoping to help businesses by installing energy- efficient lighting and another economic benefit. >> at the same time we hope to create jobs and have a job training program. >> a two year, five million dollars stimulus grant from the california energy commission will help businesses pay for the changes. in a reversal epa officials exempted a power plant from strict new greenhouse gas and air pollution rules. the proposed project is a power plant built on 25-acres of land in king county, about 55 miles from fresno. there was a lawsuit about the delay. and this week the officials relented saying that the plant and 20 other projects nationwide would be grandfathered in and exempted

and neighbors are going door to door passing out flyers making it clear they don't want the dogs in their neighborhood. >> just informing other neighbors. >> reporter: they went door to door to alert neighbors about the pitbull attacks and that dogs are returning. >> we are very concerned as neighbors and citizens that we have dangerous dogs living amongst us. >> reporter: we reported last week that camilla hill was walking her dog on thursday when the dog was malled to death by two pit bulls that lived near by. a flower memorial marks where it occurred. the pitbulls are designated as potentially dangerous until today when officers are scheduled to release the dogs. >> they are apologetic and sorry and unfortunate incident but they are making steps to make sure that it won't happen again. >> this woman witnessed the attack and says returning the

dogs has undermined the sense of the security of the neighborhood. >> so that these dog owners, as far as i'm concerned for their vanity and ego of wanting to own pitbulls and have this killing machine on the end of a leash. it just is not right. >> we will avoid this part of the street and i hope they don't get out again. >> reporter: the dog's ownernot return our call. there will be a vigil on friday. since the dogs did not attack a human being the owners do have the right to keep the dogs. oakland animal care and control says the dog owners have agreed to follow a list of safety precautions. the owners must not post a sign on their house warning that the dogs are designated as potentially dangerous.

in the hills today. and a little bit tonight. these are the highs, 65 in congress and 63 in baleo. high pressure keeps us that way and would have the fog everywhere but the winds, the northeast winds coming out of this high are sinking and they are going offshore. as they sink, they warm and as they warm they dry and it puts the ka bosh on the fog. so tomorrow your thursday it is a repeat and perhaps sunnier or warmer than -- can't be sunnier because it was sunny but warmer in many other places than today. the breezy conditions on wednesday will slightly linger and no fog in the forecast. and we're looking for overnight lows 32 in san rossa and 34 in napa and 34 in fairfield and clear and fog free. not just in the inland valleys but right along the coast. good air quality and typically

this dry warm pattern spare the air day but we are not getting those because the winds have stirred up the atmosphere. this is the computer model, what i want you to note as we go into thursday, look at the cloud cover moving in along the coast and maybe a little patchy fog showing off around point ray and that's the coastal variety and then watch what happens as we get into friday morning. you see a little bit of fog up around point ray and that's coastal stuff and watch saturday. watch everything, here we go, right like that, you will see everything going offshore and you didn't see that. but there was -- at one point in that model you can see everything moving offshore, even the fog which is an indication that saturday is going to be a pretty good warm day with mid-70s possible. right now saturday is the warmest day on the weekend. no rain in the forecast and forecast high in sanna rossa 70 degrees and then 70 or 66 in san jose and cooler in livermore and 66 in half moon bass. i like it to rain. we need the rain. this is the time of year we get
