bay bridge. two lanes of the lower bridge are still closed. a sweeper that was going to finish cleaning up the sand broke down. so now they have to wait for another sweeper to show up. and we want to show you pictures taken in the last hour. it stretched for 100 yards. covered two lanes and was six inches deep. the latest word we're getting is it could be open from now to 5:15. this is a creating a monster traffic jam. ken pritchett live on one of the approaches to the bridge now. but first in fulsome where it's virtually a parking lot behind you. >> you will see this same scene all over downtown. it is as you said essentially a parking lot. stretching all the way down to market street. it has been like this for hours. and consider this, it is now 5:00 and people are leaving work and joining this long line of traffic that's leading up all the way to the bay bridge. we in fact, were stuck in this

very traffic jam trying to get to treasure island earlier today. we were stuck for about 20 minutes. it took us 20 minutes just to move a block. as you mentioned the problem here is that sand truck which spilled about 100 yards of sand at 2:15, closing two lanes. the clean up is now under way. as you mentioned though not without a hick up. not without that first machine that first sweeper breaking down. as we understand it the estimates of clean up should be completed just after 5:00, shortly. we out here at first street and fulsome street, we talked to drivers who had been in this traffic back up. some of them said they had been here for an hour, and hour and a half. and it only moved about three blocks as you can see the traffic enforcement with the san francisco police are out here directing traffic. we talked to one of them. he didn't have a lot of time to talk to us because he was busy. but he essentially said that

this has been quite a day. we're live in san francisco, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. well you saw it play out live on our air this morning. police were moving six live grenades from a san francisco garage. the grenades were discovered at a house at about 6:00 this morning. police evacuated the area and bomb squads attempted to examine the grenades. police say they belonged to a 92-year-old man who recently passed away. >> people tend to keep these as souvenirs. they should not keep these, because they could explode. tonight the u.s. is sending a strong message to the egyptian government. secretary of state hillary clinton is condemning attacks on journalists. there is fear the situation there will soon get worse.

>> reporter: chaos in the streets of cairo, a speeding truck crashes into people. it's a graphic scene as the truck then just drives off. it's believed to be an egyptian security vehicle. the fear is that the turmoil will only continue. anti government demonstrators are vowing to intensify protest as egyptian president hosni mubarak does not step down by friday. hundreds of protesters have been injured by stones, guns, machetes. the u.s. embassy in cairo says some 2,000 americans have gotten out of egypt and more are leaving today. >> we're looking for american citizens. >> reporter: staff used bull

campus. it is showing support for protesters in egypt, what they are calling a die in. around sprawl plaza thousands of students spoke out against the egypt government. while some layed down on the stone ground as if dead. they says the in support of the protesters who have lost their lives in egypt. but for one of these students, one of those deaths is true. her skull was crushed by local police. >> she was always very happy. always joking with me when i was learning arabic. she died protesting against 30 years of dictatorship. >> reporter: this student says his father a dentist stands guarded in front of his family's apartment building at night. >> my dad is going around in shifts with a gun, that he

needs to possess himself. police are not helping us. >> reporter: many egyptians here who have lived under egyptian president hosni mubarak, are frustrate. >> as a result you feel like you are living as a second class citizen. >> reporter: more protests are coming, including one in front of u.n. plaza and another here on campus next week. reporting live at uc berkeley. rob roth, ktvu. a panel of energy analysts warned congress that the unrest in egypt could boost energy prices. the ongoing turmoil in egypt helped rise the price of crude oil above $100 for the first time since 2008. one expert called egypt a wild card and said while that country is a major oil exporter, the instability there while he's not a major oil

louisiana snell elementary. the principal told lubers to go home and cool down. lubers confessed that he went home, got a gun and returned to shoot the principal. >> we are going to have a spot for parents to receive counseling. >> reporter: one young student actually witnessed the shooting but no other children knew what had happened until their parents picked them up at the end of the day. president obama's offering a new incentive to encourage business to the make their commercial buildings more energy efficient. the plan would provide tax credits for retrofits of older building. the program would help u.s. firms save millions of the dollars a year in utility bills

bills. >> making our buildings retrofit is the big way to save money here in the united states and that's what we're going to do. >> reporter: the president also toured two laboratories that are designs new computer systems that are designed to making buildings more energy official. stocks gained today after good news from the federal reserve. ben bernanke said today he expects the economy to improve this year and inflation will likely remain low. that sent the dow and the nasdaq up. here is a look at the closing numbers. the dow gained 20 points, the nasdaq was down 4-1/3. three fires in 90 minutes. the search is on tonight for a possible serial arsonist. police are hoping to find who set fire to this victorian house. it does not feel like february out there. and it won't for the next few

more live pictures now from news chopper 2 of the situation on the bay bridge. we are just getting word now that the two lanes that have been closed for several hours on the lower deck of the bay bridge have just been reopened. however there's a monster traffic jam on all of the approaching heading to the lower deck. so it's going to take some time now for traffic to get back to normal. but again the good news, just moments ago we learned that the two lanes on the lower deck have reopened. the problem was a sand spill that happened around 2:15 this afternoon. spilled sand all over the roadway. that has now been cleaned up. hopefully within the coming 45 minutes to an hour traffic will get back to normal. questions swirling around a string of fires within just locks of each other in san francisco. tonight we know they are all deliberately set. we were there as people in the burning buildings were scrambling to get out.

we've been at the scene all day at the castro district. david stevenson there now, he just spoke to investigators. >> reporter: take look behind me. you can see the string of arson fires. they are warning san francisco residents to watch out. the emergency calls kept coming and coming this morning for firefighters in san francisco's castro district. >> there was a small trash fire around 4:00 this morning now this is our second, second alarm in an hour. >> reporter: firefighters responded to a fire in this recycling bin. only to be called later to an apartment fire. ktvu acquired this cell phone

video of the victorian on fire. >> someone yelling, stomping, yelling fire. >> i went to my window, pulled up the blind blind and there was a line of fires. >> reporter: someone set this victorian on fire. the owner allowed us in to look at the damage. arson investigators say the fires were intentionally set but are so far refuseing to link all three. they are checking surveillance video from two cameras near the harper street fire. and are tonight warning castro residents to watch out. >> if they hear anything, if they see anything that is remotely suspicious, call 911 and have somebody come and check it out. >> reporter: again another live look at the devastation that was brought upon this victorian. there was no serious injuries in the three fires but tonight at least 13 people alone in this building are out of their homes, coming up at 6:00, find out why firefighters say these

early morning fires put a dangerous strain on the city's emergency crews. for now, reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. 30 million deficit, caltrans is looking for public input and it's declaring a fiscal deficit. they are also considering the closure of some stations. one rider told me that he could drive to work but that it would cost him more. >> at the end of the day, i don't think it would be correct for me to have to bear an additional financial burden because they couldn't get their budgets figured out and put together. >> reporter: caltrans plans to hold four community meetings before it declares a fiscal emergency. people in the south, the midwest an the east are digging out after that massive snowstorm that buried parts of 30 states. as a sign of things finally returning to normal.

traffic is moving again on chicago's famous lake shore drive where cars were literally abandoned during the brunt of that storm. tow trucks have finally cleared hundred hs of strand -- hundreds of stranded vehicles. and south of milwaukee, yesterday's monster storm left drifts up to 20 feet in some spots. windchills are making temperatures feel like they are more in the 20 below range in most places. cameras in eastern massachusetts just south of boston caught this roof collapsing under the weight of all of the heavy snow. the building housed a business, all of the employees managed to get out safely. but the building as you can see there is pretty much a total loss. >> now we just checked with the three major bay area airports and found that storm really isn't causing too many problems for bay area problems today. the duty manager at sfo told

ktvu that there were three arrival cancellations this morning but that everything is back to normal now. let's take a look at what's happening at maneda international, things are running smoothly there. right now flights are normal out of oakland. on to our weather now, bill, we've been talking about this all week. but it's just all so remarkable. you see the weather back east and you see how remarkable our weather is. >> that's why it's so expensive. when they are cold, when they are stormy in the east we're typically warm here. when it's wet here, it's dry there. we go outside and i want to show you where we are. mostly in the 60s. 62 in livermore, 62 in san jose. highs today low mid-60s. i thought we would see more mid- to upper 60s, we saw a couple but not as many as we will as we roll into the next 26 to 48

could the pentagon done more to warn off the shooting at fort texas? there were many warning signs before the tragedy. >> our reports painful conclusion is that the fort hood massacre could have and should have been prevented. >> congressional investigators blame both the army and fbi for failing to stop the massacre.

13 people died and 32 others were hurt when a gunman opened fire in fort hood in november of 2009. the report found there was ample evidence. major hassan was quote a ticking time bomb. the army should have known that hassan was an extremist. >> we pretend that this religious freedom thing prohibits us from looking at real threats. the longer we do that the more chance we allow to exist for another major hassan to happen at some point. >> the report suggests that the fbi make better use for analysts who may have recognized the red flags in hassan military and psychiatric reports. the city of sunnyvale says they saw a significant drop in

crime. property crime such as commercial, residential and school burglaries dropped by a total of 18%. auto burglaries down by 41%. a man who allegedly pulled off a daring casino robbery in las vegas is now behind bars. this surveillance tape shows the suspect running through the bellagio. he made off with $1.5 million out of casino chips. today investigators say they have arrested 29-year-old antho in, y carlio who happens to be the son of a judge in las vegas -- anthony carlio. the judge released a statement saying he was saddened by his son's arrest. and here is the list of the

we continue to follow breaking news that's happening right now in san francisco. we are showing you a live chopper look now over a lot of people trying to get to the bay bridge and head eastbound. we've been checking in on this situation and things have improved just a little bit in the past 10 minutes or so. our ken pritchett has been following this story. it all started when a truck spilled some sand on the lower deck of the bridge. that happened back at 2:15. but the clean up effort and the getting traffic moving effort if you will is taking a lot

longer than originally expected. ken pritchett has an update on what's happening there. >> reporter: we can tell those two lanes are back open again because traffic is moving. we just watched a semi truck enter the bay bridge after traveling here on first street. when we first talked about an hour ago, i marked that location of that truck and it was all the way down there at market street. took him about a half hour to go five or six blocks. you can see right now the traffic is still backed up all the way to market street. you would almost expect that at rush hour. but of course we've had this traffic back up since just after 2:00 when that sand truck spilled that sand on the bay bridge. you can see leaving san francisco, we should be able to see right now that the traffic is still backed up on a lot of the entrances to the bay bridge. we talked to a driver about an hour ago who was stuck in this traffic. he is good natured about it. here is what we had to say. >> well, how long have you been waiting here? >> hour and 20 minutes and i've

gone maybe a mile. >> i'm headed to sacramento so it's going to be a long drive. >> it's going to be a long day for you. >> reporter: that was about an hour ago when the road was much more backed up than it is right now. traffic is moving better here. but while we talked to that gentleman there, he was good natured. there's a lot of honking going on out here. a lot of people with upset at the long delay they've been through this afternoon. in san francisco, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. everyday millions of the dollars in neighborhood improvement projects all over california are being put on hold as the state decides the fate of local redevelopment agencies. ktvu's robert handa is live in san jose tonight to show us how being in limbo can set some communities back. >> reporter: one example, the san jose convention center is a facility the city wants to expand to attract more visitor

dollars. but many small crucial neighborhood programs will be delayed. the mckinly neighborhood has been waiting four years to see a soccer park in this lot. tay got the plan rolling -- they got the plan rolling with developer fees, now the state put funds and the project in limbo and it may not get built. >> it would be a total disappointment. would really impact our neighborhood in a negative way. we really need this park. >> if we don't get the park built within five year, those funds have to be turned to the developer or they go away. >> reporter: up to know, parks have been a positive story. last year the neighborhood reported nine crimes. >> they showed us how to connect with anti graffiti group. basically how to be enpowered

and own our neighborhood. >> that means we have to send less cops there. that we have to have less support services to the community. that the community can take care of itself the way it wants to. >> reporter: the mckinly neighborhood is concerned about community that is still need help fighting crime and blithe. >> you just close your eyes to it. and nothing will be solved by doing that. >> reporter: but the critics say the money is needed for other services. the governor wants a special election on the issue next month. live in san jose, robert handa, ktv u. marin county health officials say they are testing water. this comes after an outbreak of flu like symptoms that left 62 students, teachers and chaperones sick there. people began getting sick last night which belongs to the marin county education. they were probably the victims

of a fast moving winter virus. the illness spread quickly in the sixth grader for the students involved in the six day program there. >> we had a viral flu bug where students were getting sick to their stomach. maybe vomiting, maybe a little diarrhea. but it spread pretty quick. >> in all about 250 students and teachers had arrived for the weekend long program, they all left today. and ktvu's consumer editor tom vacar takes us on a tour tonight showing us the finishing work that crews are doing right now and what the tunnels will look like once they're done, tom. >> reporter: if you want a good man for the job, get a woman. they did, right up this mountain. this big brawny construction crew concrete the devil slide tunnels. the woman who designed them

reflected a bit today. >> pretty much a baseline, our work is kind of finished. >> reporter: this czech born civil engineer says that each tunnel is already safe from seepage, collapse and earthquakes. >> that's a big accomplishment. the line is still holding the mountain. >> reporter: the vector quality control manager tells us, assuring quality control is as difficult as boring through the mountain itself. >> we have to make decisions on a daily basis because we don't know exactly what is ahead of us. but i think it's also the experience. which we bring to this project which is myself over 32 years. >> reporter: and now crews are lining the basic tunnel with plastic to keep water from leaking into it. then they build a cage of

rebar to form a wall. >> now we have all this concrete work, all the coordination, all the authorities. it's still continues to be as challenging as it was before. >> reporter: the last thing to be done in about a year, year and a half from now lay the roadbed and pavement. so thick and bulky and strong it'll actually be four foot higher than the surface that we walked upon today. reporting live from the foot of devil slide, tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. a top economists says he's optimistic. the labor department is set to release it's latest unemployment figures and there's hope those numbers will be going down. >> i'm actually optimistic. i think the economy after three years is in the verge of pretty good growth.

today's hearing is within a weak of hearings to put together a debt reduction bill. retail sales numbers for january came out today. they were a pleasant surprise for most analysts. snowy weather last month led to estimates of sales growth in the 2% range. but when the major retailers tallied up their receipts. january sales hit 1.2%. today's reports come after strong sales during a holiday shopping season in november and december. you might call it the pizza wars. police say they caught the managers of the one pizza parlors spray painting a competitor down the street. health regulators have a warning for parents who's babies sleep in these type of cribs. the warning if you own one. and verizon is announcing

the manager of a san jose pizza parlor and one of his former employees were arrested this morning accused of spray painting the store front of a new competitor. that pizza parlor's manager was inside about 3:00 this morning when she saw two men spray

painting the frontof her building. officers responded and they said they caught tucker trying to get rid of spray cans. tucker is the manager of a near by pizza parlor. and verizon will be offering iphones to their customers at midnight, only online. it will allow customers to place an order next wednesday and pick up the phone at one of its stores the following day. verizon is asking employees and family members to wait on buying iphones to make sure customers can get them first. parents and care givers are

being warned tonight about a potentially dangerous crib. the alert here includes the crib full size and portable drop size crib. the hardware on these cribs can fail putting babies and toddlers at risk for strangulation and suffocation. the agency says that parents who have these cribs should stop using them immediately. don't try to fix them, just stop using them. generation ii worldwide went out of business six years ago. most obese kids are overweight because they eat poorly and don't exercise enough, not because of genetics. that's the conclusion of a study that looked at over 1,000 sixth graders. scientists say they've found a dna analysis that allows doctors to look at an extremely

a bay area macy's employee is facing charges of grand theft. 31-year-old carlos gucola was caught walking out with 90 tubes of mac lipstick. he admitted of taking close to $60,000 of make up. he sold those cosmetics to friends and at all outdoor market. a bay area woman is suing safeway saying they did not do everything they could to keep her from eating contaminated food. it's about personal information that customers provide to the store for so called club cards. >> reporter: it was at this safeway store in san francisco that a woman bought a carton of eggs last year. she says she used her safeway

club card. but it wasn't until after she and her children had eaten the eggs that she discovered that the eggs had been recalled because of salmonella. >> they have the contact information and purchase information for club card members and they won't tell them that they've purchased recalled products. >> reporter: as i told you exclusively three months ago, safe way uses this bay area computer system to track food safety recall. able to notify individual stores and get products off shelves in three hours or less. safeway customers told us today that they would like to get quicker, notification of recalled foods. >> you give them your information, you hope they would give you information. >> reporter: safe way using technology to contact purchasers directly and pay damages for failing to reimburse or purchased recalled items. safeway says it already

notified customer adequately and says it has used club card data to call customers. shoppers are not required to provide contact information. safeway has not filed a reply to the lawsuit. john fowler,. worldwide sugar prices have gone up 10% in just the past few days. sugar closed at $851 a ton in london today. that continues a trend at the highest prices in 30 years. brazil, thailand and china have also had bad weather. coming up next at 6:00, continuing coverage of a developing news from san francisco where a sand spill created a monster traffic jam. we have a reporter right there on the scene. he's going to show us what traffic is like now and when things might be getting back to normal now that all of the lanes on the lower deck are open once again.

now. temperatures overnight at the beach would be in the mid-40s. here's the story, the high pressure is staying there. so rain is not in our forecast. it's just not going to happen. this week or for much of next week it's going to be dry. but here's what will happen. temperatures will warm as we go through the period right into the weekend. perhaps mid-70s as we head into saturday and then sunday. maybe warmer. we get down there to caramel into capitola you could easily hit an 80-degree reader. a little bit of patchy fog showing up. there's no rain coming in. this shows clouds and rays. see the clouds coming in on saturday, you see everything pushed back offshore saturday. that big hole, that's the heat up. that's the warm up. the computer model picks it up by showing that the clouds are being pushed offshore or pressed up and getting dried up. but that's intective of a high pressure center. when i see that. just in that computer model, without rain, when you see all those clouds going that way
