mount diablo 50 miles an hour. here is sal. traffic on highway 4 is moving well. you can see traffic looks good there. also the morning commute is okay on 24 lafayette driving up to oakland. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you. time now 6:01. protestors have filled the streets of cairo hoping to force hosni mubarak out of office. they call today the day of departure. these are live pictures you are seeing as we see it an incredible number of people. they want to president mubarak to step down and do it today. so far there is no sign of the pro government demonstrators. the obama administration is increasing its president on president mubarak to step down

and why the egyptian president says he can't do it. a certain group of people in south bay will soon be able to ride public transportation for free but they have to do something first. jade hernandez is in san jose with what is required to take part in this new offer. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. that is right, they have to attempt to find housing and a job. we spoke to one bus driver this morning and we asked him what he thought about homeless people receiving free rides and there is some concern over how it will effect other riders. line 22 runs through this bus stop in east san jose. it's the longest route and there has been issues of homeless people riding to stay off the streets. in a month riders at this bus stop and any other could see changes. the vta is offering homeless people who qualify for pilot program free rides. the keyword here is qualified. the free rides are for those homeless enrolled in a program to help them find permanent

housing. participates must find a photo id and stickers kinding the bearer -- indicating the bearer may get a free ride. now the goal is to get the homeless on their way to a job or medical appointment which would help them help themselves. they also provide a similar program in san mateo county. the rides begin in april. santa clara county will pick up the $110,000 tab. we have been told a vta spokesperson is on her way to speak to us about this program this morning. as soon as we get that interview we will bring it to you. reporting live in san jose jade hernandez. 6:04. we have developing news. this is coming from san francisco's castro district. right now arson investigators are investigating a suspicious fire that happened hours ago. it's not far from the three

arson fires we told you about yesterday. this mornings fire started 90 minutes ago at 18th street and collinwood. we got this video in from the scene. investigators say the flames burned a victorian home. there doesn't appear to be major damage. we haven't heard of anyone being hurt. this mornings fire is a couple blocks away from where three deliberately set fires happened yesterday morning. those fires all began within a two block area of the castro in a span of 90 minutes. it's too early to tell you if this mornings fire is connected to yesterdays fires. we do have a ktvu news crew heading there to the scene. in san jose just hours ago, a fire at a homeless shelter forced hundreds of people to evacuate. it started shortly before 2:00 a.m. on little orchard drive. investigators say the sprinkler system helped put out the

flames. we hear reports it started in the laundry room. investigators are still looking for the cause though. damage is estimated at $5,000. china town is really busy this morning. crews are out there cleaning up for the chinese new year. today they are taking on the problem of illegal dumping. ktvu claudine wong is out there now with the latest with what is happening. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we have talked about illegal dumping. what happens once they celebrate, this is the mess that can be left behind. this is from the fire crackers that have been set off. this is set off in a lot of businesses and homes to scare off the evil spirits. it's a good thing but it leaves a mess behind. we have been following the department of public works crews all morning to see what the cleanup effort is like. we have seen a lot of different things all morning.

>> can you have jerry come up? we have an illegal put out. >> reporter: in that alley within the last hour or so we saw a lot of trash pile, old tv, things that have been dumped there. we are not talking about a small quantity all the time. this morning is a pretty good morning. really they say the problems with dumping can leave behind quite a bit of trash. >> on a daily basis we pick up a quite amount of tonnage. it can go anywhere from 3.5- tons to 10 tons. >> reporter: any given day? three tons to ten tons? that is a lot of trash? >> yeah, that is quite a bit of items that get picked up. mostly toward the weekend. >> reporter: back live out here on st. louis place. these crews we have been following them. they make quick work of these messes out here.

they clean them up in a matter of minutes. the problem is say they will clean up this alley and then at 5:00 it will be a mess again. they just painted this yesterday. if you take a look at it, it has been tagged again. they will have to repaint it. this is an ongoing effort on chinese new year they focus on china town specifically because they want to start the new year off well. one of the two things they do is celebrate and clean out their houses as part of tradition. so the focus this morning is on this area. we will keep track of these crews. i will let you know their progress and talk about what you can expect coming up in the next few days and week here in china town and with the city. live in san francisco claudine wong. state senator leeland yee is inviting everyone to celebrate the new year today. it all starts at noon runs until 1:30 at the highland

wind continues to kick up its heels in the higher elevations. 50 miles an hour mount diablo. oakland and berkeley side i have seen 57. mostly sunny and patchy fog. on the coast it will be warmer this weekend. dry next week. it will be windy and cooler an wednesday. as the system digs in around nevada that will crank up the wind. until then it's dry. i think there is no rainful forecast until the 15th. forecast models are inching in that direction. around the 14th and 15th i would pencil in a pattern change. more clouds cooler. you can see how these just dig in. just spilling over the ridge of high pressure. we get morning clouds. sonoma is 33. pleasant hill 35. presenton is 38 degrees. lots of 30s again.

36 livermore. concord is 38. i did see a 37. i used redwood shore for 30. san rafael is 38 degrees. santa rosa 34. speaking of santa rosa beautiful santa rosa. 34 fog. we will go for a high of 68 today. it looks like a slam dunk they will be near 70 by tomorrow. plenty out here. others say we get rain in here. not unless you head up toward the pacific northwest. that is a big system. it looks like there will be another big one near the rockies. fog chilly. windy in the east bay hills. it's amazing how localized that can be. yet you go a few miles away there is no wind at all. 60 for many. napa 66. clear lake 68. sonoma at 67.

well good morning, to you. welcome back. the obama administration is said to be talking about a proposal with egyptian officials for president mubarak to resign immediately and hand over power to a transitional government. however in a tv interview president mubarak said he was fed up with being the president he cannot step down because the country would sink into chaos. yesterday gangs look at these pictures. gangs of progovernment supporters launched even more attacks on foreign journalists. one american tv crew was

carjacked. one was threatened with beheaded. four journalists were detained. many other reporters were chased. during an interview a new vice president says he blames the international media for intensifying the youth against the nation and sending in what he called an enemy spirit. all of our coverage of the uprising in egypt will continue at our channel 2 website ktvu.com. there you will find all the video. you also see a special section right there on the front page. also we are getting word that congresswoman gabrielle giffords husband will be the commander of the space shuttle endeavor final mission. mark kelly has decided he will take part in the shuttle flight in april. official word from kelly is expected from a news conference in just a couple of hours from now. his wife congresswoman giffords is still recovering from those gunshot wounds she suffered

during last months assassination attempts in tucson. snow is falling in tucson. it's not dampening the excitement for the super bowl. more than 150,000 fans are expected to pour into the dallas fort worth area for super bowl xlv. the party has already started. the black eyed peas are performing at halftime. the group says the performance will be a spectacle. >> it is a challenge. you want to give a little sex appeal but you don't want to get into any trouble. so we are very particular on the wardrobe. there will be no more malfunctions. >> keith urban and maroon five are on the lineup. one thing you won't see at this years super bowl neither team has cheerleaders. about 100 people will be attending president obama's very private super bowl party. the guest lists include a lot

profit. ford is recalling 280,000 of its f-150 pickup trucks sold in the u.s.. a spring in the door handle interior can break. that keeps the door from latching correctly and the door could pop open in an accident. so far no injuries have been reported from the problem. it does effect the 2009 and 2010 model year. time now 6:20. a young man makes a very passionate plea. why the son of lesbian parents is getting national attention. it makes you start seeing stuff that is not there. >> a new legal street drug. the long-term effects that surfers suffer. friday morning starting off well on the roads. we'll have another look at traffic and weather.

breaking news just came in. gabrielle giffords husband will be the commander forecast final mission that will take place in april more details in just a few minutes. a search continues this morning for a man that accused of mutilating thousands of puppies. dame yen is accused of cropping the years of the puppies. including the ones you see right here. they are raising its reward from $1,000 to $5,000. if you have any information in this case contact the monterey county sppa. there were 40 fewer serious crimes reported last year than in 2009. the city says crime last year was at its lowest level in 50

years. reported homicides, robberies, vehicle theft and arsons were down slightly in 2010. rapes and aggravated assaults went up slightly. they attribute the lower crime rate to many reasons. californias poison control director has requested an emergency state ban on what is called bath salt drugs. seven people including at least one here in the bay area have overdosed on the powerful new synthetic drug. >> first it seemed harmless. >> california poison control says the drugs chemical structure is similar to methamphetamine and ecstasy but its effects are even worse. some have committed suicide or hurt themselves others have permanent psychotic damage. >> you really want to lose your mental health forever and that is apparently one of the one of the real risks of these bath salts. this may well be the most dangerous drug experience of a

welcome back to the morning news. they just rang the opening well this morning on wall street. big important monthly employment report out this morning the unemployment rate is down but the job number is disappointing. we'll have details coming up in a moment. it's friday, february 4th i'm pam cook. >> and good morning, i'm dave clark. a san rafael pizza parlor is cleaning up thousands of dollars caused by vandals.

the owner of pizza orgasmica to report that someone was spraying graffiti on the building. they saw tim tucker getting rid of spray paint pans. he was let go after the incident yesterday. we talked to his former boss. >> he's never been late. he's never been hung over. he's never shown any any kinds of devious behavior. >> it's nothing that will stop us from being successful. >> the second suspect used to work for extreme pizza. damage is estimated at $7,000. students will return to school for the first time today since their principal was shot and killed on campus. police say the suspect in the case 44-year-old john luebbers has confessed to shooting the principal. we now know the two had gotten

into an argument prior to wednesdays shooting. luebbers reportedly told police he was fired from his janitor job which he held at the campus for ten years. school district officials tell us that's that is not true. the oakland police department once again inspecting the police radio system after reports of more problems this week. police officers lost communication twice this week. once yesterday while responding to a robbery call and again on wednesday night when they couldn't talk to police out in the field for 20 minutes. we told you last week about a similar fill area that happened during a high speed police chase. the city says that was caused by a timing malfunction but that the problem has been fixed. some residents who live near dolores park reason not happy about -- are not happy about a new deal.

they will put the mexican food trailer on a paved area of the park. however residents who live near the park are trying to get it moved out of there to the foot of the park at dolores and 19th street. which is not on parkproperty. cal train will hold community meetings. the board voted yesterday to hold a hearing on march 3rd. that's when they might declare a fiscal emergency. that will clear the way for drastic cuts. it includes cutting them from 86 to 4. closing six stations. and suspending service at stations in san mateo county. the 25-cent fare increase is also possible. time now 6:33. sal is it feeling like friday light? >> a little bit. we are having good traffic dave and pam. let's go out and take a look at

what is going on. crossing 880. it's not all that bad. we are hoping it will stay this way. also this mornings commute on 880 north and southbound that traffic looks good getting up to the coliseum. at the toll plaza yes this looks like friday light. usually on a regular weekday or on a weekday other than friday it's usually busy here but right now it's not. let's go to steve. happy friday. we do have a few high clouds. a beautiful shot to start your friday for those of you watching on your big 55-inch high def tv. if you have 3d put your glasses on. there is a little bit of patchy fog out there. mainly on the coast. it will be dry and warmer this weekend. mostly sunny. warmer with low 70s. maybe mid 70s as we get toward sunday. next week it will still be dry. we will see a windy and cooler pattern. until then we are not looking

this morning. kraig are they saying this is related to yesterdays fires? >> reporter: there are two things that are related the time of day and location. behind me you can see the doors at barbershop. the next door neighbor made quick work of this fire. about the same time and neighborhood investigators are looking to the possibility that this fire and the three yesterday are arsons. this mornings fire started about 90 minutes to two hours ago at 18th street. investigators say the flames burned the front of this victorian home which also looks like it doubles far business. it doesn't appear to be any damage. fire officials say they could be dealing with the same person. >> in the last two days we have had four fires at the same time frame in the morning that we're

investigating the whole thing to see if they are all linked. >> reporter: yesterdays fire w were all in the castro. one of the fires forced a number of residents to flee a building and heavily damaged the building that was under renovation at the time. the other started in a trash can. nobody was hurt in that fire. all were set within an hour of one another. we have to make a call to fire investigators. we do know they will check wood as much-- wood samples. to see if they were the same. reporting live in san francisco kraig debro ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. time now 6:38. bad news for beef lovers this morning. why are beef prices going up at the restaurants and meat counter? this morning we have been following around the department of public works crew as they do a cleanup. we are now at the broadway

incredible pictures. they are calling for president hosni mubarak to step down and do it today. they call this the day of departure. however the egyptian president said he would like to leave immediately but he can't because he says e egypt -- egypt would sink into chaos. an arson investigators are probing this suspicious fire. this happened in san francisco's castro district. it happened a couple hours ago. it's only a couple blocks away from three suspicious fires we told you about yesterday morning. also in the news yesterday morning a man hunt continues for a driver that left his passenger in a burning car. this happened yesterday morning in hercules. that passenger is in the hospital now. the san francisco department of public works is busy in china town this morning as they clean up for the chinese new year. ktvu claudine wong has been

following cleanup crews up a morning long and they tell you that the problem of illegal dumping gets particularly worse this time of year. right? >> reporter: that is right. people are cleaning out their house this time of year. a lot of that stuff ends up on the streets. that's what we have been doing following them. i don't know if you have walked through this tunnel but it can be a problem with things getting dirty and the tunnel being a mess. they have been out here this morning. take a look at the walls and the ceiling because they brought in a steam cleaner earlier to clean up all of this. this is part of an effort that will stretch all the way into next weekend. they are steam cleaning, they are sweeping and they are cleaning up that illegal dumping. >> can you have jerry come upright up stockton and clay? we have illegal put out. >> reporter: now this is video we got with the department of public works crew as we

followed them in and around china town. they found bags of trash, boxes, even a tv in some of the alleys. illegal dumping they say is a big problem all year but especially around this time of the year when people are cleaning out their homes. if you dump things illegal you can get fined up to $1,000. in this alley crews found a male that may lead to someone getting a fine. >> this is the perp that has the same address. different name. >> you think they dumped their trash out of their window? >> i don't know. could be. could be out of the window. it could be a bag that was busted open. this morning these people will be trying to get in touch with this person. >> reporter: so in that situation they took a picture of the trash pile where that male was found. they found three pieces of male that have the same address on it with a couple of different

names. they will have outreach teams coming out to try to track down those people. as we come back out here live to the broadway tunnel out here on the corner or edge of china town. they have cleaned up this area. they will go to the stockton tunnel tomorrow. they will clean up into the week and the weekend. they have a big event tomorrow. this is an ongoing effort. coming up on mornings on 2 we will track down some of the teams as they go and around trying to educate people about illegal dumping and the problems with it and give them better alternatives. we will keep you updated in our news hour. the big event of the chinese new years celebration is the parade. ktvu will bring that to you live from san francisco. our own julie will mc. our broadcast starts at 6:00. the price of beef has jumped 16% in the last year.

according to todays article in the san francisco business times, it's mostly because of an increase in the price of corn. that is bad news for restaurants and many tell us they don't want to pass the increase along to customers since it's already tough to get people to eat out in the current company. the cost of raising cattle is up even more. bill reid says 25% price increases to produce beef are forcing some ranchers out of business. >> they are just a lot less cattle in the world today than there were 20 years ago and a lot more people and a lot more income for people willing to pay for beef. >> reid says herd size is down to the 1950s levels. there are millions more people that want to eat beef. recent flooding in australia and problems in korea where ranchers are forced to kill some of their herds. herd size is not likely to

increase in the next year or two. the e-mail went out at the white house. the system for unclassified was on commission from 8:00 a.m. until yesterday afternoon. reporters say they got phone calls from white house officials during that outage which is very, very rare these days. right now it's 6:46. i want to go back over to sal. any problems in the commute? >> we've had a pretty decent drive today. we've had a couple minor accidents. nothing rising to the level of serious problem yet any way. this is highway 24 westbound as you drive to the tunnel. there is no major problems. the commute looks pretty good as you drive to the tunnel. also this mornings commute looks good. and again we don't have a big delay. i think on this friday it's safe to say we are having a little bit of friday light action going on here. this is san francisco northbound 101 coming up on the 80 split and then the 80 split and the foreground here right near the hall of justice traffic looking good.
