massive crowds of anti- government protesters again in cairo, egypt today. the deadline they are now giving president mubarak. an early-morning fire in the castro this morning. why investigators believe this one could be linked to three others from yesterday. >> reporter: and free bus rides for the homeless in santa clara county. some might wonder why. we have the latest from the spokeswoman -- coming up. we're just finding out about major new problems just days before super bowl sunday. it involves hundreds of flights going to dallas. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's friday, february, 4th. at this hour, demonstrators are gathered in i rowe, egypt -- are gathered in cairo, ??? demanding president mubarak to step down. it looks like another very large crowd there and a lot of signs being strung around some of the buildings as well. today, soldiers had been checking i. i.d.s and searching people who come into the square. that's seen as a sign that the military is protecting the anti- government protesters. coming up in 15 minutes. we'll have a live report from washington, d.c. with what the white house is doing behind the scenes. well, your time now, 7:01. in about three hours from right

now, bay area students will go back to the uc berkeley campus continuing their protest against the violence in egypt. this is the same group we showed you on the 10:00 news last night. here they are, staging their sleepout. they tell us their goal is to raise awareness about the situation in egypt and also to pressure the u.s. government to hold back aid for president mubarak. >> you have the mid- to upper class, we have -- that's a small percentage. >> we checked in with one of the protesters, he said the police came in and told them to leave. they do plan to go back at 10:00 this morning. they plan -- they plan to have another protest tomorrow afternoon at san francisco's un plaza. it happened just hours ago. another suspicious fire in san

francisco's castro district. this morning fire bushed a victorian home at 18th 57 colingwood. it's only a few blocks away from the three fires we reported to you yesterday morning. kraig debro is on the scene with more information. >> reporter: good morning. in light of what happened yesterday, fire investigators are looking into the possibility that yesterday's fires are linked with today's fires. the fire here happened at 18th and colingwood. you can see the front screen was burned out. this fire might have been worse if not for the fire department and, we're hear, the owner of the barbershop. >> we smelled smoke. i got my roommate. we went to try to find out where it's coming from. and i didn't see it at first. he said, oh, there is a fire out here.

>> reporter: this fire started at 4:15 on colingwood. investigators say the flames bushed this home, at least the front of it. there does appear to be a lot of damage here. fire officials say they could be dealing with the same person. >> in the last few days we've had four fires at the exact same time in the morning. we're investigating to see if they are all linked. >> yesterday's fires were in the castro, in the early morning. >> reporter: one of the fires forced evacuation. one of the fires started in the trash can. i'm gonna try to catch up with the tenant in the barbershop to see how he first learned about the fire and how he -- and what his reaction was when he knew he needed to get water to put this out. back to you. >> thank you. another early-morning fire

forced the evacuation from hundreds of people from a san jose homeless shelter. >> we were at the scene when the residents were forced out of the home. investigators say the sprinkler system helped put out the flames but the fire alarms jolted an estimated 200 people out of their sound sleep. >> i was sleeping and everything, and the fire -- >> the fire started in the laundry room, sprinklerhead, held the fire at bay. but our crews had to go in with lines to extinguish the remainder of the fire. >> arson investigators want to know how the fire started in the laundry room in the middle of the night when no one was doing landry. the damage is estimated at $5,000. 7:05. well, santa clara county officials are helping the homeless. it involves free public transportation. jade hernandez is live in san jose right now to tell us more about this program, what it's

doing. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. 30 minutes ago, i got off the phone with the santa clara county, valley transportation spokeswoman. she told me the vta started to hand out these free passes back in 2007. we're at this bus stop. the bus just pulled you. now, this pilot program back then aided the homeless community but the vta has gotten the green light to continue that program. this is for those looking for permanent house and jobs. participants must provide a photo i.d. and a sticker indicating they are entitled to free rides in order to get on the bus. social security agencies will determine eligibility. an estimated 3500 people a year are expected to take advantage of these trips. the goal is to get the homeless on their way to job interviews or medical appointments which would help them help

themselves. >> the county advocates looked at various services need to help the homeless, the at-risk, homeless population. they identified transit as part of the solution to help them get back on their feet and to get them to and from interviews and jobs. >> we are live in east san jose at the east ridge shopping center. line 22 runs through here. it's the longest route. it's notorious known for the area. samtran is also doing the same thing in san mateo county. >> thank you, jade. we want to check in with sal, speaking of the commute and see how things are going? is it friday light? >> it is in mean areas.

traffic is doing well. if you are trying to get across san francisco from the east bay, it's light. no problems getting onto the bridge. looking at interstate 880, that traffic looks good heading over to oakland, international airport. and by the way you should check with your carrier today because even though the weather is doing well here, other parts of the country can't say the same. check your flight, make sure you know where it's going. some cancellations are up there. let's go to the protest here. this is a protest in the -- hold on for one moment. this is a protest here in fremont where some students are asking drivers on mission boulevard near their high school to honk. they are supporting the egyptian protesters. now, this may be causing a traffic problem. this is mission san jose high school. right in front of the high school. students are standing here and they are encouraging drivers to

just moments ago, we learned 630 flights are cancelled at the dallas/fort worth airport. that's gonna cause a lot of problems for those heading to the super bowl. you can zee a huge traffic jam there. i just checked for the weather in dallas. right now, light snowshowers, 20 degrees. it's been colder in texas than it is in alaska. however, the weekend doesn't look too bad. saturday, high of 45. sunday, super bowl sunday. partly cloudy and a high of 50. snow began to fall in the area and some residents in fact are plain -- rah complaining the road the around -- are complaining the roads around the super bowl are getting too much attention. but officials say they are concentrating on all areas. the area has been hit with rolling blackouts.

cowboys stadium has been exempt interest -- exempt from the power loss. they asked the city to assure that the blackouts didn't hit the stadium. officials say that's a public -- public safety issue because if there was a blackout, there would be no way to check for security -- >> oh, yeah. >> and i've been reading that some people in dallas are renting out their driveways for about $1,000. will he or won't he? the husband the congresswoman giffords has just made his decision about piloting the next space shuttle mission. why one man is apologizing for something he treated about concerning the unrest in chiro.

unrest in egypt. >> reporter: elevennen days into this resolution in egypt and president obama has yet to take any questions about it. while he's made several statements, he's not taken reporters's questions. today he will. he holds a joint press conference with the prime minister of canada at the white house later today. now, top members of his administration, president obama's administration, have been working behind the scenes feverishly on a proposal. they are working with top egyptian officials on this proposal to get egypt's president, hosni mubarak, to step down immediately. and here on capitol hill last night, the u.s. senate passed a resolution urging mubarak to hand over power. >> there is every possibility that this crisis lurches into a genuine massacre, and we cannot afford that. and we must do everything in our power to see that it stops. >> reporter: here on capitol hill, momentum also seems to be

building for the idea of cutting off aid to egypt unless mubarak steps down now. reporting live from washington, d.c., alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. time now, 7:17. well, fashion designer kenneth cole is apologizing for a comment he made on twitter. he was apparently trying to promote a new line of clothing and he wrote "millions are in uproar in cairo. rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available online." he then posted a link to his web page. that comment really triggered outrage, and then he posted annal.gy on his -- apology on his facebook page. it is 7:18. the official word came just within the past hour, nasa

confirms that park kelly, the astronaut husband of congresswoman giffords, will be the commander of the shuttle "endeavour's" final mission. it's not until april but he needed to make his decision today to take part in the intense training sessions. kelly took a leave after his wife was shot in tucson last month. doctors say she's making a slow but steady recovery at the rehab center in houston. 7:18. sanmateo police may have a new lead now in a horrific triple murder case. this was an execution-style killing that happened 32 years ago today. a gunman walked too a payless drugstore after closing time, shot three young employees in the back of the head. then he got away with $20,000. police still call this an active cold case. ktvu news has been told they now have some new information but they are not ready to release it. >> to show the evidence that we have may cause us problems

we are continuing to cover the massive protest in cairo, egypt today. anti-government protesters are calling this the day of departure. these are live pictures, once again, from tahrir square in the heart of cairo, egypt. the protesters want to pressure egyptian president, hosni mubarak, to resign today. now, the mood in the square has been one of celebration with protesters dancing and singing, their families with young children there. we've not seen any of the violence that we saw the past two days between anti- government and pro-government demonstrators. in fact, the pro-mubarak demonstrators have not been out in force today in any significant numbers. today, the meeting of a -- beating of a -- the beating of a uc professor will be the focus of a protest in sacramento. on monday, the protester said she was beaten by pro-mubarak state police just minutes after she gave an interview to a tv

station. >> handed me to the mob that started beating me and pulling my hair. they lift my shirt off. >> she says a low-ranking member of the military pulled her out of harm's way. she needed a couple of stitches but says she's fine. darrell steinberg will hold a news conference m -- in front of the federal news building at 11:00 a.m. condemning that attack. there's mixed news in the labor department's jobless report for january. pl ears adding -- employers added more jobs. the estimate aches is 103,000 to 140,000 of new jobs. but the unemployment rate jumped to 9.4%. they thought it would drop.

google received 75,000 job applications in just one week. that's at a -- that set a record for google. the company announced last week that it would add more than 6,000 employees. 7:31. a final decision from oakland police chief anthony batts about his future with the police department could come as early as today. earlier, chief batts said he would meet this week with mayor jean quan and members of city council to reestablish relationships. he said he would make a decision by the end of the week. now, we did contact the oakland police department this morning. we're waiting to hear back on any decision. along with the possibility of losing the chief, oakland police are also dealing with more radio communication problems. police say the radio system

malfunctioned twice this week. once yesterday while responding to a robbery call. also on wednesday night. dispatchers could not talk to officers out in the field for about 20 minute. we tolds you about a similar radio -- about 20 minute. we told but a similar radio problem but that has apparently been fixed. 7:32. crews are cleaning up san francisco's chinatown and today they are focusing on street tunnels an illegal dumping. claudine wong is live in chinatown to show us what's happening now and why this is such a problem this time of year. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes. we've been showing ut cleanup. we're on washington. you can see -- you can see down this alley the cleanup continues. really it switches. they are not just cleaning up. but they are talking about

enforcement. they have outreach teams. they are going through the illegal trash that's been left behind and they are trying to find any evidence of who is responsible because if they do find the person responsible for the illegal dumping that person will get a fine. >> it looks like they don't have enough garbage service. i can tell the can -- where it open. the can is empty. >> will you cite them? >> yeah. we're going to cite stem for -- -- cite them for too much trash. >> reporter: the fines can go as high as $1,000. basically. >> they are citing people for leaving their trash on the sidewalk, their garbage cans on the sidewalk. some people don't have service at all. we've talked to a couple of people. program spruce up san francisco, they've gone 300 blocks of the city and found

700 businesses and residents that don't have garbage service at all. we've seen fireworksers go out after a couple of -- and a couple of people celebrating the new year. the celebration included cleaning up your house. we have these fliers. it's talking about this event underway now which is the cleanup effort. it's talking about information and what your options are instead of illegal dumping. this is gonna be a program that goes on through this next week with the big event a week from tomorrow. but again, the message is, you can't leave the city a mess. you can't leave the streets a mess. if you do, you will get a fine. now, that the businesses are starting to open up, they will

stocks are bouncing between small gains and losses this morning after a mix the employment rate said that unemployment rate fell last month from 9.4% to 9% but new jobs remain scarce. only 36,000 new jobs were added. that likely means people have stopped looking for work. right now, dow is down 13. the nasdaq is up 2. s&p is down 1 1/2. the 20-year-old son of former ron jeff skilling was found dead in his apartment in southern california. this is video of jeff skilling, who was charged with fraud, insider trading and other crimes following the collapse of enrob. he's serving 24 years in prison and is reportedly distraught over the death of his son. police say his son, john skilling, was a sophomore at chapman university. he was found lying near bottles of medication. friends say he was distraught over a breakup. this is a sad day in placerville. students are going back to school for the first time since their principal was fatally shot. our reporter is live with more. >> reporter: good morning. this memorial here that you see at the front of the school, these candles. hundreds of candles, balloons, this will be first thing that students see as they return to class. this will be the first time back. the teacher was shot and killed two days ago. the school was closed yesterday here -- here and at the other two schools. the school janitor is accused of shooting the principal in his own office. the janeter is in jail. today, counselors and backup teachers will be in of -- every classroom to provide support to the teachers abs the 400 students that attend school. in his place, every teacher will line the front of the school to reassure students as they return to class at 9:00 a.m. california's poison control os.3 @iha smimakeupto3@etasy. states they are openly marketed in smoke shops and head shops. florida's seaworld is introducing a different kind of killer whale show. dawn was killed when an orca pulled her under water by her ponytail in front of horrified spectators. the new show will feature trainers working exclusively

there are new signs the obama administration is intensifying pressure on egypt's president to step down immediately. let's go to alison burns in our d.c. newsroom to learn what's happening behind closed doors right now. good morning, alison. >> reporter: that's right. there are several reports that top members of the obama administration are working feverishly behind the scenes on a plan for a peaceful, immediate exit for egypt's president. now, as we watch the 11th day of anti-government protests, the demonstrators are hoping this will be the day of departure for president hosni mubarak. last night, here on capitol hill, the u.s. senate passed a resolution, urging mubarak to step aside immediately.
