within one mile radius. police believe the same people are responsible for the crimes. >> all of the reports that come in se this is three african american males. >> we're kind of a ghost town down here. >> reporter: this business owner wants police to increase patrol. >> they certainly have their hands full with lesser staff. but this counts as a neighborhood too. >> reporter: and opd says a team of officers designated to this particular neighborhood are working to try and find the suspects but at this point they have no leads they can tell us about. live in oakland, allie rasmus. we just found out in the past 30 minutes that authorities have positively identified the child's body pulled out of the delta medota canal as juliani cardenas. juliani was kidnapped last month from patterson. crews pulled out an empty car from that canal last friday. his body was recovered on

tuesday and an autopsy determined he had drowned. his alleged kidnapper has still not been found. he is presumed drowned. right now police and fire officials are asking for the public's help after a fourth fire in the castro district. investigators say someone set fire to an ornamental screen just before 4:00 this morning. it is the fourth suspicious fire in just the past 24 hours in the castro. no one has been hurt but at least ten people were displaced. >> we are just concerned and fearful that this just seems very random and happening in the middle of the night. >> reporter: fire investigators told ktvu this afternoon they are still looking for a conclusive links between the fires. a con vicked serial rapest already serving a sentence will

be sentenced again in the death of sandra howard. he faces seven years to life in prison for killing howard. there is enough evidence for a man to stand trial in the killing of her boyfriend and 17 -month-old son. he's accused of killing solina williams to cover up the murder of her son teshon williams at the berkeley marina in 2009. the da's office has not yet decided if it will seek the death penalty. tonights for barry bonds filed a flurry of motions. in one motion filed just before the court closed, bond's attorneys asked that a taped conversation between bonds and

steve hauskins be thrown out. oakland police chief anthony bats is staying put. now mike mibach is live with the communication problems plaguing the department. >> reporter: chief bats told us directly that because that police radio system is not functioning properly at all times, right now in at least one pocket of oakland officers are not even allowed to patrol solo anymore. >> if any system is not working properly. i want to make sure that officers can back each other up. and we have gone to some areas to two person units. >> reporter: a radio failed at a critical incident last month. police say the system failed twice this week. >> we had a situation the other day where the officers were on a burglary call. you know, and they had to use their cell phone, hand signals

mibach. san francisco health and human services agency is notifying thousands of med-cal recipients that their information may have been leaked: the agency says at this point there is no evidence the personal information has been sent to any unauthorized parties. marin county officials are now trying to figure out what sickened 160 people last on a trip to the walker ranch. the health department told ktvu today that water tests came back negative to any contaminants. a private high school in san francisco is set to make history. ktvu's john fowler was there as the senior class learned that they will be the first in the

students from mission san jose high school lined mission boulevard today asking drivers to show their support in fremont. students have family members in egypt and say they felt inspired to do something here. >> i see that the government is really lost -- some state lawmakers, members of the arab american community and clergy rallied today in sacramento in egypt. they were joined on the phone by uc davis professor who's been in the middle of the protest in cairo. she says she believes president mubarak will step down as early as tomorrow. a day of protest is planned for tomorrow with a day of protests including san francisco. they're calling on president obama and his administration to cut off government aid to

egypt. the protest starts at 9:00 p.m. in egypt right now, president mubarak is still in power despite massive day of departure protest calling for him to step aside. thousands and thousands demanded mubarak's immediate departure. the protests were mostly peaceful. however gunshots were fired in cairo. egypt's health -- ministry now says the death toll has reached 11. president obama says there's needs to be a transfer system. and including a slide show of the major political players just click on the egypt tab on ktvu.com. chinese dancers mark the beginning of the lunar new year today at san francisco's city hall. they performed a traditional lion dance in the rotunda. they offer free performances at

city hall on the first friday. ktvu's rob roth has been talking with shop owners about what they are expecting during this year's celebration, rob. >> reporter: julie, here in china town we've been hearing a familiar sound all day a sound that's also music to the ears of many store owners. at the empress of china restaurant, the year of the rabbit means big dinner crowds. especially on weekends. >> we have many parties for the association, for the chinese association. they have big parties. about you know sometimes about 500 people. hundreds of thousands of people are expected to visit china town over the next two weeks. and they spend millions of the dollars here. some stores tell us they see 20 to 50% increases in business. >> reporter: these two weeks here we're really busy.

especially on weekends. we have a couple of affairs coming up. great weekend. wall to wall people around here. >> reporter: so what do they buy? >> groceries and candy. and then those the chinese traditional stuff. yeah. >> they spent the money? >> oh yeah. >> reporter: before sunrise this morning, ktvu is out with crews from san francisco's public works department as they engage in a massive effort to clean up china town. it's a chance for the community to put its best foot forward. they found envelopes with the name of a restaurant on it. >> yeah, we are going inside them. >> reporter: in chinese traditional, people often clean their houses to prepare to receive good luck. but that practice can sometimes cause problems when crash ends up on the street. >> a lot of people chinese new year we see an increase in the amount of items that are put out, especially the china town

college and high school baseball teams around the state are beginning practice today. the players are using new safer bats. metal and composite bats became a big safety issue last saturday when a usf pitcher survived a skull fracture when he was hit with a metal bat. some players say that will also reduce the number of home runs being hit. >> well it is super bowl weekend. but right now it's all about the san francisco giants. mark is here to tell us why. >> we don't have a football team around here in the super bowl. so it is a san francisco giant's town right now. their annual fan fast as you would well manage is going to be quite the popular spot tomorrow at at&t as they kick off the weekend. the giants have media day with the team announcing that the
