well good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. >> it is tuesday, february 8. wind advisory he is are in effect around the bay area this morning. here's a live picture of the san mateo bridge. you can see the camera is shaking around quite a bit, and chp is warning drivers about high winds there. jay hernandez has been warning about trouble spots, and join us live from the oakland hills. >> reporter: good morning, it is a beautiful day here in the oakland hills. that does not mean that wind actually created some damage and left behind damage this

morning. we found tree branches down. driving around this morning, gauging the wind situation. we found this an hour and a half ago. two california highway patrolmen picking up huge branches. falling in the roadway, and blocked both lanes. the officers were able to pull it off to the side of the road. the reason for all of this, several wind advisories in place. in montclair, signs in several storefronts blown over. the wind had died down, but left behind its mark. one man told us his dog polly noticed the howling winds before he did. >> woke me up, because the wind was blowing, trees were rustling and branches were falling. there are a lot of trees hanging over on skyline

boulevard. so it can be treacherous sometimes. >> reporter: that's what the wind in the oakland hills sounded like a few hours ago. several different cities reported receiving calls about false alarms due to the screeching winds. oakland police answered a couple of those alarms, you're also taking a look at one of the san mateo bridges. before 1:00 a.m. this morning, a second wind advisory was issued for the alameda county, dublin area. high winds were reported in the altamont pass area as well. reporting live from the oakland hills. the man accused of stalking facebook founder, mark zuckerberg is scheduled to be in a santa clara county courtroom this month. he allegedly sent facebook messages to zuckerberg, including one that said, and i'm quoting, please help me,

i'm ready to die for you. this morning, he tells celebrity website, tmz.com, he just wanted to get zuckerberg's advise about a personal problem. he's accused of showing up at the facebook offices and at zuckerberg's home in palo alto, trying to contact him. a hit-and-run victim who could never walk again. >> reporter: the victim's mother says her daughter is still in stable, but critical condition. she is conscious, we're told, but very heavily sedated. right over here, if you look at this post. this is the intersection where it happened. this is a picture of the young woman we're talking about. it happened early sunday morning, around 2:30 a.m. 18-year-old erika luna and her boyfriend were crossing this street at the intersection of tierra buena and fontaine roads

in san jose, when someone driving what police describe as a gray suv struck luna, and kept going, dragging her down the street nearly a block. yesterday, luna underwent surgery to repair a shattered pelvis. her mom says she still has a very long road to recovery. >> they told me last night that walking is way in the future. i shouldn't even think about that. she's got a lot of surgeries to go through. she's missing a lot of skin. she is like a burn patient. >> reporter: among the surgeries she will have to undergo, there is also skin grafting. they are pleading to the public, anyone with information who may have seen what happened, should call san jose police. the family is offering a $2,000 reward for any information that leads to the person responsible.

this is the intersection where it happened. the intersection of fontaine. san jose police say they are looking for surveillance video. we don't know if thee apartment buildings have surveillance cameras, but just up the road, there are a few businesses, a denny's, and a motel 6. they're hoping to get a clear picture of the driver and the vehicle. it is 7:05. a tour today could eventually lead to the return of the death penalty in california. in just three hours, the federal judge who halted executions five years ago, will tour san quentin's newly remodeled death chamber. the state spent $5 million to update the chamber.

more than 700 are currently on death row. >> the law is very clear. certain individuals, because of the crimes they commit, because of the extenuating circumstance deserve to be executed. >> however, not everyone wants to see executions resume. a small group of protesters gathered outside the gates last night. they argue the death penalty is inhumane, and expensive. seeing some of the biggest crowds of protests yet in cairo's square. we're seeing this as you see it. these are the protesters today. we're also now hearing for the first time some of the demonstrators broke off. they actually marched to the egyptian parliament building and protested there. the protesters are calling for a million people to turn out

today to continue to press their demand that president mubarak resign immediately. protesters say they're energized by the release of a google executive. many are calling on him to be their new leader. they say he was blind folded during the 12 days he was detained, but said he was not mistreated. he says he was not a hero, just someone using a keyboard, and that the real heros are those people out protesting in the square. some in the square say they're hoping to see him there, and we've heard reports, he's already out there, joining the protest. apparently he is trying to join the protest. we did check his twitter page, and just about an hour and a half ago, he tweeted this message. tahrir square is blocked. trying to get there now, and he says egyptians are making history. >> he's getting a lot of attention here in the u.s., all over the country. a lot of people paying attention to what he's doing.

everywhere. there's about a 10 minute delay at the toll plaza. but you can see the water how it's moving around. just be careful, especially if you drive a small car and plan to use the bridge. this is a look at the commute in livermore. 80 because of an earlier crash, in richmond backed up to pinal. the bureaulington to san mateo commute on highway 101 looks okay. here we go. hold on there. because the wind is cranking up. yeah, sal is correct, sometimes it's just that east bay that gets the wind, but that's not the case today. i was looking, santa cruz mountains, around 30 miles per hour. near crystal springs reservoir up to about 30 as well marin county. everybody is in line for a

more on their credit cards, borrowing rose 3.5% during december. economists say that's a sign some are becoming more confident about the economy and their job. we've learned keith olbermann is headed to a now job. he left countdown last month after a dispute with management. there are reports this morning he's going to announce a job at current tv. former vice president al gore helped create current tv. it's a bay area public affair's channel. filmmaker michael moore is headed to court. there's a money dispute involving his documentary fahrenheit 911. moore claims movie producer west side productions cheated him out of almost $3 million. he wants damages. the lawyers for west side says the lawsuit is boloney, and

that moore has received every dime he's entitled to. fahrenheit 911 which talks about the terrorist attacks is the highest grossing documentary of all-time. one key player will not be part of the discussion on pot farms. city attorney john russo is apparently fed up with the council's determination to license large scale pot farms. he sent the council a letter saying he will no longer represent them in this case, citing ethical rules. updating a story we first told you yesterday. bounce houses are now banned from walnut creek city parks. the inflatable houses had been

it is 7:22, a man credited with saving a surfer could be fined. he used a jet-ski with a sled attached to bring jacob out of the water. but there's a federal law that bans personal watercraft in the area, which is a national marine sanctuary. other surfers in the water have said the proximity of the jet- ski was probably the reason the

man survived. surfers will pack a room to make a case for changing the law. that starts at the elks ranch conference center in half moon bay. new changes could be coming to a law forcing some teenagers to register as a sex offender. the texas law has to do with sexting. that's when someone sends a sexually explicit picture of themselves via text. a new law would make the act a misdemeanor. >> our goal is not to put more teens behind bars, but to try to prevent this type of conduct from taking place. they're exposing themselves round the world forever more. 7:24. some disturbing video of a wrong way driver colliding with a car on a busy southern

california freeway. the white pickup truck this was driving south along northbound interstate 5 in oceanside last friday. behind the wheel, an 83-year- old man, with a suspended driver's license. see there, he slammed into the center divide, before smashing into another car. it caused a multi-car pileup. but really amazingly, no one was seriously hurt. >> he was flying down that freeway. >> yeah, wasn't just cruising along. time now, 7:25, back here at home, we want to know what's happening in your commute. sal, what are you seeing out there? >> fortunately, we don't have any of that going on, but we do have some slow traffic, and minor glitches out there. also windy. this is highway 24, you can see how crowded it is. there are no major problems on 24 as you head into oakland. also this morning's commute has been slow at the bay bridge toll plaza. we're happy to show it to you from a different angle. westbound traffic is backed up

metro makes. that's 15 times larger than caltrain. sean elbert, one of his supporters says his 40 years experience and talents are serving the passengers well. >> i think that's kind of ridiculous. people at the top, they should be accountable. they should look at, you know, all the budgets, including their own, and see, you know, what might be the best appropriation of funds. >> got himself elected president of the national transit agency, directer of association. that opened up the flood gates for federal dollars that a lot of other systems will not have access to, but he has the respect of his national peers, he's able to help us in that regard. >> reporter: on thursday, the caltrain board is set to declare a fiscal emergency, and is considering closing down 16 stations in order to close a $30 million budget deficit.

more reaction coming up in my next report. reports live in san francisco, ktvu channel 2 news. time now, 7:32. in about three hours from right now, facebook will be holding a news conference, where the social networking site is expected to announce they're changing zip codes. the company right now is headquartered in palo alto, but they've been hinting, they're looking for a larger campus. they bought a site that used to house sun microsystems. at the beginning of last year, facebook had 1200 employees. they've grown to 2,000 employees. their news conference is at 10:00 a.m. also today, the san francisco board of supervisors will consider a new tax credit. it's aimed at trying to convince twitter to stay in the city as it expands its headquarters. this is the first policy proposal from the mayor, ed

lee. the idea is to offer payroll tax exemptence. twitter, which has about 350 employees, is outgrowing its current space in the south of market area. 7:33. two south bay community colleges have been warned they are at risk of losing their accreditation. the federal department of education has placed san jose city college on probation. san jose's evergreen community college district received a warning. both schools have been told they have two years to fix issues with financial planning, evaluation and governance, or lose accreditation. cal state's channeler, and uc's president say they're in favor of a plan to extend taxes to help avoid more cuts and tuition hikes. h i k es despite massive cuts to their budgets they say they don't plan on raising fees this year. but they warn that could change

if voters do not approve governor brown's proposed tax plan. time now, 7:34, will san francisco is investigating the death of a man who collapsed after running a half marathon. peter haas died. he was the president of pet sport u.s.a. that's a pet store in pittsburgh. it took 20 minutes for a nambulance to get there once he collapsed. it appears the race's promoter didn't have enough staffing for the 10,000 runners in the race. the promoter is disputing that, along with the delays in getting medical aid to mr. haas. marin county knows what caused dozens of students and adults to get ill during a field trip last week.

they tested positive for the norovirus. the illness is spread from person to person. it's believed that one child was sick, and the disease spread from there. it is 7:35, a california college town is making plans to formerly honor its hometown hero. city leaders in chico are planning an aaron rodgers day. the date of course depends on when the super bowl mvp can make it to town. the celebration will be in honor of the mvp. he attended college in butte oroville before going to cal. there is a huge celebration in green bay this afternoon. fans volunteered to shovel snow from the seats of lambeau field. actually kind of a tradition for them to do that. they're making room to pack the stadium for the super bowl champs. some are now being sold online,

chafer ranch subdivision. just yesterday, he said he saw three coyotes walking in a park behind his backyard. chen says he normally sees a coyote about once a week, but never three at once. >> i just wanted to make sure we live here safe, and we walk along the trail every day. >> coyotes generally avoid humans, and they're not a threat. if you encounter one of the animals, it is best to scare them away by yelling. it has been one month since the tucson shooting. find out what lawmakers are doing today to try to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. too much of a certain kind of food at a young age may lower a person's iq.

yesterday. buyers could buy several items with the logo. arizona state lawmakers are considering legislation today that would ban the type of large weapons used in that mass shooting in tucson a month ago. the legislation would ban gun magazines with more than 10 rounds. the shooter in tucson attacked with a magazine that had more than 30 rounds in it. six were killed, 13 others were injured. gun rights supporters say they will fight that legislation. the man accused in a fatal shooting along fisherman's wharf is expected in court a couple of hours from now. he is expected to be charged with four counts of murder. police say that deadly shooting

stemmed from an argument over counterfeit purses. contra costa county sheriffs are joining in an investigation with a man linked to explosives. the man was arrested yesterday at a home in brentwood. police would not give any details of the arrest, except to say that the man is part of an ongoing investigation into explosives related crimes. in gilroy, police are look forgot three men who raided a gun collection valued at up to $2 million. it happened during a home invasion on recker avenue, sunday night. the owner says he was tied up for 9 hours, and beaten by three men wearing ski masks. >> they managed to get the pass code to the safe where they stole the multiple guns from the victim's safe, as well as the victim's pickup truck. >> the victim was treated for cuts and bruises. his car was found torched in

santa cruz county. investigators are trying to determine if the victim knows the suspects. time now 7:46 in los angeles port police seize $2 million worth of fake ipods and iphones during a raid on counterfeits. two people now face charges, but they expect more arrests in this case. investigators say the products were made in china, then shipped to the port of los angeles. those fake goods were sold at swap meets, and flee markets. there's a new offer by the mayor of detroit to get more police officers to live in the city. he's offering their very own home for only $1,000. mayor bing is proposing selling houses to police officers with that very low price. the officers would be eligible for up to $150,000 to renovate the homes. more than half of detroit's police officers live outside the city. it is 7:47.

planned parenthood is announcing a staff -- following an undercover video by an anti- abortion group. what that video reveals, and planned parenthood's response. >> reporter: the video has shocked people across the country. now planned parenthood clinics are responding, announcing plans to retrain employees. the video was released by live action. the group says that the video shows an employee at a new york city clinic, giving advice to a man, seeking health services for underaged sex workers. using a hidden camera, the man reportedly says, we have some girls that are kind of young, 14, 15, they might need an abortion, during the conversation, the clinic employee responds and appears to be laughing about keeping

things quiet. >> okay. >> keep us out of the loop. >> the new york affiliate released a statement saying if teenagers come into the clinics, they immediate with a life and social worker, and they're also screened for child abuse and neglect. several attorneys general are launching investigations of this incident, and others like it, where clinic workers say they were approached by someone they believe to be linked to this california anti-abortion group. we're also going to have more information on our website, ktvu.com. it is 7:49, more california voters now consider childhood obesity to be a very serious problem in the state. that's according to a new

survey just released this morning. 59% of those polled called it a very serious problem. just 46% felt the same way eight years ago. the survey was conducted among 1,500 california voters last year. it was conducted today, on the first anniversary of michelle obama launching her childhood obesity initiative. too much fast food at a young age may lower a child's iq. they tracked what 4, 7, and 8- year-olds ate. they found when a 3-year-old ate a lot of fatty, and processed foods, their iq was lower by the time they were 8 years old. just in time for valentine's day, one of america's best known couples could be making beautiful music all over again. ken, of barbie and ken fame wants to get back with barbie.

welcome back. time now 7:53. this is a huge warehouse fire outside of dallas, texas. this morning, firefighters are still trying to put it out. a lot of thick black smoke, and you can see the flames shooting up for hours now. the warehouse was destroyed. it reportedly housed aluminum can used for the soda dr. pepper, as well as monster energy drinks. police in the central valley have shut down a cockfighting operation, that led to the death of a kern county man. he died after being stabbed in the leg by a rooster. police say the man was taking part in a cockfight, when the bird stabbed him in the leg with a knife. someone had attached that knife to the bird for the fight. the stabbed wound ended up

severing an artery. the man ended up dying shortly later. 17-year-old gunner sandberg, and his teammates held fair first practice of the season yesterday. it's been almost a year since gunner was hit by a line drive. he suffered a fractured skull, and was placed in a coma. there were reports that the metal bat was partially to blame. this year, all marin county athletic teams will use wood bats. michael vick was given a key to the city on saturday, the same day he was named nfl comeback player of the year. the mayor of dallas says the mayor protem gave him the honor. that was done without his knowledge or approval. vick finished his second season

jose. her mother says she is heavily sedated, but conscious. she underwent surgery to fix a shattered pelvis. the doctors told a family they are lucky this young woman is still alive. her mother says luna's father and five brothers are devastated by what happened. and they want that hit-and-run driver to be found and brought to justice. >> she is fighting for her life and i pray to god that she makes it out of this one. >> reporter: yesterday, luna's family and friends canvassed the neighborhood, handing out, and posting the fliers you're looking at. they're offering a $2,000 reward for information that can help find the driver. as of right now, they do not have any new leads in the investigation and they also have no surveillance video so

parliament building to protest there. egypt's embattled president is taking the first concrete steps today to implement some reforms. the protesters are not happy. they're still calling for a million people to turn out today to continue to press their demand that president mubarak resign immediately. protesters are also saying they are energized by the release of a google executive. many are calling on him to be their leader. he says he was blind folded during the 12 days he was detained, but not mistreated. he says he is not a hero, just someone using a keyboard. and that the real heros are those in the square. he is the administrator of a facebook page used to organize the protests in egypt. people in the square say they're hoping to see him there. here is a photo of the crowd in the square today that was sent on twitter just about five minutes ago. the number of people are larger than we've seen, they seem to be covering every square inch

it is 8:15. toyota is looking for some vindication today as the federal government releases its report on what caused toyota and lexus vehicles to speed out of control. alison burns is live in our d.c. bureau with what we're hearing is in the report. >> reporter: the feds are closely guarding their findings until the official release in just about three hours, but "the l.a. times" reports that nasa engineers are expected to reveal they could not find significant electronic defects in toyota vehicles. toyota executives have contended in several congressional hearings and in

national high speed rail network. we're not sure at this point how much of those federal dollars might end up helping to pay for california's high speed rail project. in about three hours, facebook will hold a news conference, and they're expected to announce the headquarters is moving. facebook has hinted they're looking for a larger campus, and it bought a 22-acre site that used to be operated by sun microsystems. facebook has grown to 200,000 employees. today the san francisco board of supervisors is expected to consider a new tax credit aimed at trying to convince twitter to stay in the city as it expands its headquarters. it's the first major policy proposal from new mayor, ed lee. the idea is to offer payroll

tax exemptions for employees, hired by companies that move to the mid-market area. that's an area the city has been looking to revitalize, and twitter is currently outgrowing its current space in the south market area. two south bay community colleges have been warned they may loose their accreditation. san jose city college is on probation. san jose's evergreen community college district received a warning. both schools have been given two years to fix problems with financial planning and governance, or they could lose accreditation. in favor of a plan to extend taxes to help avoid more cut backs and tuition hikes. despite massive cuts at their budget, csu, and uc officials say they're not planning on raising fees this year, but warn that could change approximate voters don't approve governor brown's approved tax plan. san francisco is investigating the death of a

man who collapsed after running a half marathon. the 36-year-old peter haas died sunday morning in golden gate park. he was the president of a pet toy company based in pittsburgh. witnesses say it took about 20 minutes for an ambulance to arrive once he collapsed. the directer of emergency services says it appears the race's promoter didn't have enough medical staffing for the runners. the promoter is disputing that. marin county health officials now know what caused students and adults to get sick during a field trip last week. they tested positive for the norovirus after a visit to the walker creek camp. it's believed that one child was sick, and the disease quickly spread from there. time now, 8:36. a small california college town

grandson of the oil magnet has died today. he was 54 years old. he made news. he lost an ear during a grizzly kidnapping case. he was kidnapped, and when the family stalled, the kidnappers spooned by sending them back part of getty's ear. he was later freed after a payment was made of more than $2 million. later on, he suffered a stroke for abuse of alcohol. jay paul getty has died at the age of 54. it is day two of an extradition hearing for julian assange. he arrived at a courtroom in london this morning. his attorneys are trying to stop a judge from sending him to sweden to face sexual assault charges. two women accuse him of wrongdoing when he met them at a visit in stockholm last year. assange is denying those accusations.
