we expected a possible closure of two elementary schools here in concord. but this morning why another school is finding out it could be next. also a violent mugging caught on tape. the surprising thing police say about what the suspect and the victim were doing earlier this day. it's all ahead on the ktvu morning news. good morning to you. welcome to a brand new day. it is wednesday. it's february 9. i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. we want to get a quick look at weather and traffic starting with steve. good morning, steve. >> good morning, pam and dave. skies are clear. breezy for some. not too bad for others. it will be sunny today. coast, bay, inland. and temperatures will be in the upper 50s, low to mid-60s. again some areas have gusts about 20 miles an hour. others say what breeze? it's calm. if that's the case you're in the 30s. some in the 40s. some like san francisco at 50.

now here's sal. right now things looking good on the richmond bridge. live in marin county and have to get to the east bay or other way around now is a good time to do it. it's clear on the bridge. also this morning we're looking at the san mateo bridge. and that span looks okay. now let's go back to the desk. all right. thank you, sal. topping our news this morning. hundreds of students in the mt. diablo school district will now be effected by two school closures. the board has voted to close two schools but as ktvu's claudine wong tells us a proposal that no one saw coming is also on the table. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, pam. yes, i did check the blogs this morning. and certainly people are reacting to this uncertainty that remains in the mt. diablo unified school district. we are at westwood elementary school where things are still quiet here. the reason we came here is because important decisions need to be made about the future of this school. if you can see on this fence here a sign up saying look

they're enrolling kindergarteners for next year. but what happens next year, that's apparently still up in the air. that is a new development in this ongoing struggle faced by the mt. diablo school district. what should be done to save $1.5 million? we know what was done last night. last night the board voted four to one to close glen brook elementary and hol brook elementary. we brought that decision to you during our 10:00 news. that was a decision met with a lot of emotion. >> so they just shut down one neighborhood all at once. one snap. didn't even matter. >> we thought that coming here tonight would make a difference. we thought that improving our test scores would make a difference. but i think that the plan was that the school was going to close even before we got here. >> reporter: so certainly a lot of disappointment, but also a lot of surprise with this talk about possibly closing more schools. it comes down to deciding the best way to redistribute kids throughout the district.

it's a complicated equation, but the public will now be asked to weigh in over the next couple of weeks on the options in front of them. again, westwood elementary school for the first time now being talked about possibly being closed to make the redistribution easier. we'll be out here asking parents ma they think as they sort through this. live in concord, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:04. in just a couple hours from right now a man accused of attacking a catholic priest goes back to court. william lynch of san francisco blames it all on something he says happened 30 years ago. ktvu's jade hernandez is live in san jose with the details. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. we're live in front of the santa clara county superior court. two things are expected to happen here this morning. one, a rally in front of the courthouse and a preliminary hearing inside. william lynch has already pleaded not guilty to attacking

retired priest. but he is expected to go before a judge for his preliminary hearing today. he alleges the priest molested him and his brother when they were boys. he's accused of tracking the priest down in a retirement home and beating him. lynch was charged with felony assault. he has said in prior interviews he wants to use the trial to shame the priest publicly. there are those who agree with lynch and supporters of lynch are also expected to meet in san jose today in front of the same courthouse. lynch will face a judge. supporters say he was a very active priest and portrayed them. supporters say they want to expose the system which protects predators. the 65-year-old former priest has denied abusing the boys but more than a decade ago the catholic church paid the brothers $625,000 to settle a lawsuit in regards to those allegations. the rally is expected to begin in an hour and a half right here in san jose. we'll bring you more then. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news.

time now 6:05. oakland police are warning women in the city's chinatown area be very careful this morning. that's after a sexual assault outside of an apartment complex on jackson street. happened shortly after 10:00 monday night. police say a man brutally beat and sexually assaulted a woman in her 50s. now the victim is chinese. she doesn't speak english very well. she was only able to give police a general description of the attacker. >> terrifying for anyone but of course if you don't speak the language and try to communicate with authorities adds an extra layer. >> deputies hope to question the victim again and come up with a composite sketch. this attack doesn't appear to be connected with other recent sexual assaults in the nearby lake merit area. well, vallejo police are asking for your help in solving an armed robbery. i want to show you a picture from surveillance video of one of the three men suspected of robbing the speedy food restaurant in vallejo on

january 21st. all three are described as 18 to 22 year old african-american men, two had handguns. if you have any information, please call vallejo police. san francisco police are looking for a man in a violent mugging that was captured on tape. it happened on sunday in an alley near sixth and market streets. a concerned citizen recorded this incident and called 911 right away. the video shows the robber throwing the woman to the ground before running off with her wallet. police point out they say this was not a random attack. they say the woman and man met earlier in the day at union square. to get another look at that video, go to our channel 2 website at ktvu.com. it is under bay area news. time now 6:07 the cost of riding bart appears to be taking a toll on the opinions of customers. bart's latest satisfaction survey found about 64% say bart is a good value. that's down 7% from 2008.

just 24% strongly agree that bart is worth the money. 15% of those polled agreed when asked if bart was cost efficient. since bart's last survey fares have gone up 6%. 6:07 is the time. back over to sal for a complete look at traffic. pam and dave, good morning. once again doing pretty well around the bay area. we keep watching the major spots. for example, the bay bridge is a good spot to watch at this time of the morning because this is when it begins to change. in about five or ten minutes from now they'll start the metering lights on and then we'll get a bigger delay at the toll plaza. yesterday i got a tweet from someone who says tuesdays are the busiest commute days. that's his theory. you can always send me an e- mail or tweet or whatever. whatever you want to contact me and tell me which day you think is the busiest day of the week. let's go to the san mateo bridge. that looks okay. remember yesterday we had some wind problems.

crockett 39. st. helena at 39. saratoga at 39 degrees. morning hours if the wind relaxes the temperature drops off. if not, it stays in the 40s. i've seen temperatures 36 to 50 around napa and most locations have a northwest breeze in the 40s. upper 40s to near 50 degrees. it's a crazy pattern. any wind and you're in the 40s. if not, then it's on the cold side. the dry stretch continues but there are signs next week this looks like a wet week. you can extend this all the way out to probably friday of next week. but today it's sunny. but there are changes happening ever so slowly. fairfield north of 20 vacaville north at 13 napa airport says calm. oakland says calm. these can change rapidly. but 30s, 40s to 50. 34 santa rosa. 46 fairfield. yet concord's 38. 40 redwood city. as you saw lots of 30s lost

time now 6:14. protesters in egypt say they are concerned if they're not able to force egyptian president mubarak out of office, they could be targeted for revenge by the government

and government undercover police. some of the protesters say they've been noticing people in the crowds in cairo's main square spending a lot of time filming and recording video of those who take part in the protests. they believe those people are undercover police documents who's involved in the protest. and they fear they will eventually be rounded up one by one and arrested. the google executive now become a leader of the protest has put the spotlight on the mountain view based company. he joined protesters in cairo yesterday after spending 12 days in custody. now google hasn't commented on his political activities only saying it's a huge relief that he was released. google also actively participated in the uprising in egypt early on when the egyptian government cut off internet access, gag the devised a way for people to leave voice messages that were then posted on twitter. this morning we're finding

out about a disturbing trend within the cia. an investigation by the associated press finds that officers who made grave mistakes that left people wrongly imprisoned or even dead are getting very little or no punishment. now this new study claims this is the result of a system that takes years to make a decision and hand down reprimands. because of this, many of the officers who made the worst mistakes have not become senior managers. military talks broke down between north and south korea just hours after a second day of negotiations began north korea walked out. the talks were the first of its kind. and there was hope that the meetings would ease tensions. but talks apparently collapsed when south korea demanded that north korea apologize for the sinking of a warship in march that killed 46 sailors. north korea apparently wants to focus on other military issues. well, in just about 45 minutes the head of the federal reserve gives a major update on

the state of the economy. ktvu's allison burns is in d.c. with what could be a very contentious appearance for him. allison. >> reporter: pam, it is ben bernanke's first appearance before congress since republicans took control of the house. gop lawmakers have been vocally critical of his approach to the economy. they're expected to grill him about it this morning for his part he's expected to say while the economy is growing it will be several years before the unemployment rate returns to a more normal level. new this hour we just heard from treasury secretary who gave an optimistic view of the economic recovery. >> we've been growing up for a year and a half. the private sector created more than a million jobs. thing are gradually improving. if you talk to businesses across the country you would talk to private economists and private forecasters, they think the u.s. economy's now going to grow between 3% and 4% over the next two years. >> reporter: we expect

lawmakers will press him on how he thinks the government should reduce the federal deficit. live coverage for you during my next update in an hour. for now live in washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu news. oakland mayor voluntarily giving back 25% of her salary. she'll be paid $137,000 a year. that's about $46,000 a year less than the former mayor. mayor quan says she doesn't want to ask other people to do what she's not willing to do. now when the previous mayor said he would take a 10% pay cut just as other city employees were being forced to do but then he changed his mind. this morning california governor jerry brown will hold his first news conference since becoming governor last month. he's keeping his reputation as a man of mystery. last night he wouldn't say what he's going to talk about at that news conference. the governor told state capitol reporters i'm quoting "if i

tell you, i'll have to cancel the news conference." it's a good bet he'll give the latest plan to tackle the huge budget crisis. president obama says he hasn't been smoking for almost a year now. that's the word from first lady michelle obama who says she's very proud of her husband. he picked up smoking as a teenager and has been very open about the struggle to kick that habit. the president wants to be able to tell his daughters that he is not a smoker. >> and you approve. >> that is nice. let's check with in sal. he's watching the commute. he's going to take us to the bridge. >> we're going to look at a couple of them, dave and pam. right now start with the golden gate bridge. golden gate traffic looks good. all of marin county traffic right now still looking good. even that coming in from sonoma county. it's getting busier there. so far not a big delay. moving along to the toll plaza, metering lights have been switched on. pretty soon you might start seeing a bit of a delay. off and on on a wednesday.

so we'll see barring any accidents it should be okay for you. from fairfield or vallejo north bay driver 80 looks good across the bridge and onto richmond. we mentioned marin county. i want to let you know the road sensors are not picking up any slow traffic so far from novato southbound 101 to san raphael. 6:19. let's go to steve. sal, skies are clear. breezy for some. not too bad for others. it will be a sunny day today. crisp and clear and breezy. not as windy. we had conditions howling yesterday. things have calmed considerably. still a breezy day for a few. temperatures are in the 30s, 40s to near 50 degrees. little wind turning easterly which should give us i think temperatures today will be the same as yesterday. tomorrow can be slightly warmer. starting off with 4 santa rosa 38 san raphael. mid-40s napa. concord upper 30s. san francisco finally dipped to 39. 48 now redwood city.

and now mountain view that says 43 but i know closer to sunny vale it's about 39. you can see everything right there. not much organized. but over the next five to seven days low pressure's going to settle in on the west coast and our weather will be changing. today it's about what we had yesterday. only lose the wind. cold morning. near average highs which is upper 50s and low 60s. so for some 58 to about 59 on the coast. low to mid-60s everywhere else. not much of a spread here. i don't think we'll see anything different really tomorrow. mostly sunny on friday. partly sunny on saturday and increasing clouds on sunday. when the opening bell rings in the next ten minutes keep an eye on disney stock. the company posted a 54% jump in earnings last quarter which is much better than analysts forecast. disney says better than expected attendance at its theme parks, higher advertising revenue on its television networks and cost cutting at movie studios all contributed. several cell phone makers are working together to reduce

good morning. right now traffic on the bridges moverring along pretty well westbound. little bit of a back up now they've switched on the metering lights at the bay bridge. san mateo, golden gate and richmond traffic looking good. all right. thank you, sal. another winter storm is headed for eight states that are still digging out from last week's snow. the latest round of bad weather is targeting the plains and mid- south states. forecasters expect about two inches in dallas. up to ten inches in oklahoma. airlines are already pre- canceling flights in anticipation of those harsh conditions. no more towing or impounding cars in berkeley. that's the new plan unanimously

approved by berkeley city council. that's good news for drivers, tow yard owners say the move will take a huge chunk out of their business at least 30%. the city entered an agreement with a company to place a boot on the wheel of the cars that have five or more unpaid parking tickets instead. owners have to pay off the tickets and then pay $140 to have the boot removed. time now 6:25. animal activists at uc davis are studying the effects of road kill and how to present it. it's a safety issue for drivers and of course for the thousands of animals who die every day just on bay area roads. uc davis professor is a retired veterinarian who keeps his eye on the roads. >> see a lot of raccoons and rabbits and ground squirrels. the other thing amazes me is the number of birds. >> he's actually worried some animals could face extinction. but more information and more volunteers are needed before

could effect even more students. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. just within the last minute i talked to a teacher as she walked in to westwood elementary school. she said, look, i know why you're here. this has caught us all by surprise. the idea that this school could possibly close makes sense but really no one even knew this was coming. in fact monitoring what happened in the school board meetings last night they were only focused on two schools, glen brook and hol brook. the vote on those schools came just after 10:00. and they voted to close them in a four to one vote in an attempt to closing $1.5 million budget gap. but it was after that vote that the board started talking about what's next they started talking about westwood elementary. >> all of the hol brook kids go to two schools. glen brook go to one. new twist is that valley view -- not valley view, westwood would go to one school, mountain view. >> reporter: it is all a little

bit confusing. nothing has been decided. all we know though is that this is now on the table. there are doing to be mealings to discuss this. one on the 15th and one on the 22nd. things will move quickly. a vote is expected on the 22nd which gives this school and school community two weeks to digest this and react to it. i just talked to a teacher as she walked in here and she said it's all very upsetting. she said in part some of this makes sense if you talk about how kids move from school to school when you're talking about 1300 kids they have to move around. just because they understand it doesn't mean they like it. and certainly this morning we're hoping to talk to more people out here. i've just been told that the principal is now in the building. we're going to try to talk to her. we'll bring you that coming up on mornings on 2. live in concord, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:32. while the mt. diablo school district is closing schools, a south bay school district is opening five new theaters. a production of beauty and the beast debuts tomorrow night at

dell mar high school's new theater in san jose. the campbell union high school district is celebrating the openings of theaters at four other campuses. those theaters by the way were paid for by state and local bonds. well, the use of tasers could be addressed today in san francisco. this follows three recent shootings including this one in december where police shot a man in a wheelchair outside a mental health facility. now one option being considered involves establishing a team of officers trained specifically to deal with people with mental health issues. the interim police chief also indicated he may want to arm officers with tasers, a less lethal alternative to guns. a search is underway for four men in a deadly shooting right outside an oakland grocery store. it happened in front of the safeland market on foothill boulevard last night. police say the victim was a man in his 30s. there's no description of the four suspects. right now we only know that they were wearing dark hoodies.

our time now 6:33. we have an update now on the investigation into the death of an orinda man after he ran a half marathon in golden gate park on sunday. the people who tried to revive the 36-year-old say no one who tried to save his life ever identified themselves as being part of an event medical team. race organizers have said emergency workers based near the finish line tried to help him within five minutes. an ambulance stationed at the finish line had been sent to help another runner that was in distress. all of this is under investigation. in the east bay city of hercules, organizers have recall drive against two city officials say they've got enough signatures to put the measure on the june ballot. at last night's city council meeting recall supporters presented almost 6,000 signatures from hercules voters and residents. the petition accused council member don keenny and the new mayor, ward, of supporting questionable development deals

that puts the city in a financial crisis. however, those two city officials say they were deceived by a former city manager. >> we were acting on information we had. it wasn't the right information and now we're trying to get everything shipshape. >> now hercules former mayor resigned just a couple of weeks ago over the fiscal mismanagement accusations. now if all the signatures are verified, voters will decide whether or not to recall them in the june election. fans of cal sports are anxiously awaiting tomorrow's big announcement. uc's chancellor will reveal whether uc berkeley will be able to save cal's baseball team and other major sports programs. now two women's programs are among those in jeopardy, gymnastics and lacrosse. and if that happens, cal could find itself in violation of the gender equality law known as title 9. that could lead to even more sports cuts at cal.

meantime supporters have raised $15 million to try to save all of the sports programs. we know sal is a cal alumni. i know you're watching that. but right now you're checking on a new crash in san jose. that's right. dave and pam, northbound 101 approaching the 680/280 interchange it's a crash here. really kind of a bad spot. there's no good spot for an accident but this is a really well traveled area. four vehicles and they're moving them off to the center divide but they were first reported in the two left lanes. again, northbound 101 just before the 680/280 interchange. it looks like it's not -- in fact now we're getting word that the roadway is clear. that came in just now. so they've moved them off to the side of the road. but they still need tow trucks and all that. so you can see some slow traffic in that area on northbound 101. move along and take a look at westbound highway 4. we do have slow traffic here now. it has been slow in antioch and

to about 25 miles an hour for a few or higher up around 1500 or 2,000 feet. but not as bad as yesterday. forecast calls for temperatures in the 30s, 40s and 50s. then giving way to upper 50s and 60s. so sunny, breezy, cold morning. sunshine, mild tomorrow. on the weekend this valentine's day thing i know it's on monday but many people will be doing saturday or sunday. saturday looks to be the best. there will be more clouds coming in on sunday. and cooler then rain next week. i've been leaning on the 15th for about two weeks now and everything is looking very positive for next week for rain especially monday night into tuesday. lafayette this morning 36 palo alto, men lo park also 36. mill valley 38. saratoga 39. but crockett and st. else that are 39. both of them. a breeze for one and no breeze for others. 30s, 40s to right at 50 almost. san francisco dipped to 39. 38 concord at fairfield wind

brook elementary and glen brook middle schools. and a new school could now face closure. the school board president has proposed closing westwood elementary, but there's going to be a commute meeting on this first. in about two hours from right now william lynch, that's him right there, he's due back in a courtroom in san jose. he's accused of tracking down and beating a catholic priest that he says molested him as a child. lynch's supporters are planning a courthouse rally. that's supposed to start in about 45 minutes from now. and in egypt today protesters are now targeting the egyptian parliament in cairo. they've organized this sleep-in outside the building. you're looking at what happened last night. they're calling now on egypt's attorney general to investigate the wealth of egyptian president mubarak and his family. on capitol hill some lawmakers are now backtracking on calls to cut u.s. military aid to egypt.

the u.s. gives about $1.5 billion in military aid to egypt every year. last week several lawmakers said they would not vote for continuing that. but now many of those same lawmakers say they are rethinking that position because they believe reducing the amount of aid would also reduce u.s. influence over egypt. president obama's budget that he submits to congress next week is expected to maintain that military aid to egypt. in italy, prosecutors are demanding that premier stand trial immediately in a sex scandal involving a 17-year-old girl. the italian leader is blasting the action as disgusting saying it's designed to topple his government. prosecutors claim he had sex with the girl and paid her to keep quiet. both he and the girl deny any sexual relations. a judge is expected to decide on an indictment within the next two weeks. time now 6:44. back here at home a san

francisco supervisor has a unique new idea for recycling. ktvu's kraig debro is in san francisco now. he knows all about this. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. if you were around when they had care not cash this is kind of like that but food not cash. i'm at a recycling center outside a safeway supermarket. it's a long way from becoming law but a proposal to change how recyclers getting compensated is getting reaction from people who depend on these centers to survive. we're at a safeway on market street and buchanan. there's actually a law requiring a recycling facility be located near grocery stores. that's part of what inspired this proposal. the supervisor wants a new law instead of giving money for recyclables, he proposes vouchers for food instead of money. some of the people who are recycling here are alcoholics and drug addicts and bother people near the centers. we spoke with a recycler who didn't want us to reveal his

identity. >> i think it's pinpointed on because we have a bad staple put on us anyway. dope fiends, alcoholics. all that in one big pot. they look at all that and then, hey, you're bad people you know. >> reporter: because there's a state law that mandates that grocery stores have on site recycling depositories or be located within a half mile of stand alone recycling centers, this proposal in order for it to become law would take an act of legislature. he wants to get the board of supervisors involved. he wants them to lobby the state assembly for that change. i've made a call to scott's home to see if i can get him to comment. try to talk to him as well as more recyclers. a lot of them say they depend on these centers for money for things they need. reporting live in san francisco, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. well, twin brothers from tracy are among five pairs of finalists in a contest to have a nascar race renamed in their honor. marines matthew and daniel

sewage system. supervisors approved an ordinance yesterday that allows the city to inspect restaurants and make sure they're not dumping grease down the drain. about four million gallons of grease flow into san francisco's sewage every year that costs the city millions to clean it up. under this ordinance restaurant owners will also get incentives if they install devices that catch the grease. tonight "american idol" is showing the san francisco auditions. fresh off their world series victory the bay area welcomed idol judges and ryan for the last stop on their edition tour. some use gimmicks and costumes to stand out. there's one. others hoping to score a golden ticket to hollywood. the bay area is no stranger to hollywood. adam lambert was discovered here. tonight's show will also
