i just spoke to the president of the boys and girls club of oakland about yesterday's alleged rape of a 7- year-old. why he says no one at the club knew anything was wrong. a crash on beerily boulevard, one of san francisco's busiest streets has taken a life this morning. how will it effect your commute? plus shots fired at an ac transit bus with passengers inside. this morning police are looking for the answers to one big question. good morning. it is thursday february 10th. thank you for joining us. i'm pam cook. >> and good morning. i'm dave clark. let's check your weather and traffic. here's steve. thank you very much, pam and dave. we have clear skies. temperatures cold. lots of 30s and low 40s in san francisco for some we'll end up with sunshine today for

everybody. temperatures low to mid-60s. now an update on your traffic with sal. steve, we still have an investigation team on the scene of this fatal collision in san francisco at the corner of geary boulevard. geary is blocked. you see the traffic investigating officers, special unit of sfpd. they're out there doing this investigation. one person was killed. that body was taken away moments ago. right now geary boulevard remains shut down for at least a couple city blocks each way. it looks like these guys are obviously moving as quickly as they can but they want to do a thorough investigation. muni buses have been rerouted in the area. and this is a really busy street. the 38 geary is one of the nation's busiest bus lines. that's going around the block. fortunately it's not a trolley bus. we will update you on the muni delays and also the delays to traffic in this area. this is a look at 680

southbound that traffic looks okay heading to the south bay. 6:01. back to the desk. sal, thank you. this morning oakland police are busy investigating a shocking child rape case. the victim, a 7-year-old boy. kraig debro joining us from oakland with the latest information. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. officers at this east mont substation here did not respond to the initial reports, but many have heard about what happened. one told me it made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. i did just speak a couple minutes ago with the president of the boys and girls club of oakland. he told me there was no commotion at the club yesterday. and no one knew anything was wrong. medical staff members at oakland ice children's hospital called police last night at 8:45. police say the mother of a 7- year-old boy brought him to the hospital after he told his mother he'd been raped. police say two other juvenile boys violently raped the 7-year- old in the bathroom or one of the bathrooms at a boys and girls club. the club is located right

across the street from baptist church on international boulevard at 85th. now police say they're going to return to the club this morning to figure out who was there and what they saw. right now i'm going to go contact the president of the boys and girls club and continue my conversation and get more information for my next report. live in oakland, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. concord woman is accused of hiding a teenage runaway in her home for two months. the 15-year-old is now back with her family, but police say she ran away in november and hid at the home of the 39-year- old. detectives actually searched her home at one point but say stephanie hid in a crawl space. she's accused of giving false information to the police and may now face criminal charges. police say the teenager was not being held against her will. time now 6:03. this morning sheriff deputies are searching for the gunman who fired shots on a passing ac transit bus. one passenger was hurt in last

night's shooting that happened at third and grove. investigators say five passengers were on the bus when those bullets came crashing through the windows. shaltered glass hit one of the passengers in the face. that injury isn't believed to be serious. we still don't know if someone on the bus was targeted or if this was a random shooting. well, oakland firefighters discovered a body after putting out a fire at a homeless encampment beneath the freeway. someone spotted smoke and flames below interstate 880 at the 66th avenue off ramp yesterday afternoon. when authorities arrived, they found a badly burned man's body near a temporary shelter. they say the fire does not seem suspicious. >> he was either asleep when the fire got too big, or he was somehow or another incapacitated and couldn't wake up. >> no word yet on the victim's identity but police say a dog tied to a leash nearby was uninjured. animal control is now caring

for the dog. time now 6:04. this is it. it is finally decision day at uc berkeley. the chancellor's expected to announce the fate of cal's baseball team and four other sports programs. they could all be eliminated after this semester because of the budget crisis. now sports fans have stepped up to the plate. they raised $15 million, but that may not be enough. >> for this to be taken away it's a big deal. >> reporter: you're going somewhere else? >> yeah. i'm definitely going to try to find somewhere else to play. >> our futures are up in the air as well. i half jokingly say to my realtor's on speed dial. >> along with baseball men and women gymnastics rug by and women's lacrosse would be cut. the cut backs would save cal about $4 million a year. 6:05 is the time right now. check in if you're getting ready to head out on the roads to see how they look. >> all right. getting later information about this crash here in san

francisco. this crash at the corner of geary happened a couple of hours ago. they're still clearing it. these are live pictures now as you can see of the accident investigators still doing their investigation here. these cars are nowhere near close to being moved. and rather unfortunately this is going to affect the morning commute. not only the 38 and the 33 muni but also the cars obviously in the area. geary's a really busy street now. looks like they may be doing a little bit of -- they've released some of the other officers that were there because a lot of police officers came. some of these officers are being sent back to their districts. but the accident investigators are still on the scene. and this is going to cause a huge delay for geary and the richmond district here. this is near where the old theater was, it's near a gas station just to get you familiar with the area. 6:06 move along and take a picture of highway 24 westbound traffic okay up to the tunnel.

at the toll plaza still light. westbound not a big delay coming into san francisco. and on the bridge it's clear we had a much earlier crash that's gone. and the morning commute is okay on 237 if you're trying to get into your job in the san jose area right now should be good on the freeways. 6:06. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. very good morning to you all. we have cold readings out there. a lot of 30s. even some low 40s close to the coast. but everything is pointing towards sunshine today and mild weather. very close to yesterday's highs. santa rosa few locations will be below 30. and many below freezing here for a couple hours. if you haven't stepped outside yet it's cold out there. temperatures rebound from the 20s to 30s and 40s and end up in the 60s low to mid. some cold lows out there. kenwood 30. mill valley, alamo both 36. men lo park 36. saratoga 37. and in the city cole valley 42

with 44 at the hill. chilly out there. 30s for many. 29 now -- how about that napa airport? i also saw 29 north of town. 32 livermore down to freezing. santa rosa down to 31. your trifecta, oakland, hayward and mountain view. i don't take out taxes so it pays really well. 47 officially in san francisco. cold morning focus on concord here. 36, 56 and go for a high of 63 today. now that's close to buchanan. if you're a couple miles away from buchanan it's probably about 32. there are much colder readings than that. high pressure's just -- go ahead, try. try and break me down. try and get me out of here. well, it will, but not until monday or tuesday. the weekend looks good. mostly sunny. slight breeze for some. but nothing compared to the past couple days. rain returns next week. what have i been saying for about two weeks now? the 15th. i still think that looks good, the 15th. the question for next week for those who work outside or those

dave. yes, we are at the mpcc. really in the last few hours we've seen a lot more activity. a lot more people showing up here. that's the country club. pan over to show you where everyone will be headed. you see these vehicles that have lined up past the barricades. what you can't see in the dark is the driving range which is right there. that's where they come this morning. we expect them over the next hour to start warming up for today's round. this is of course the first round. and here in my hand, this is what i have, this is the pairings. this is how we know where everyone's headed. and the general manager today said they expect 10,000 to 12,000 people today because this is a list here at the mpcc which basically means all your most famous celebs and golfers will be here this morning. if we look on the list which i have it is kevin costner, george lopez, andy garcia, ray, all those folks will be out here and they'll be out here during actually our show this morning on the morning news and mornings on 2. the celebs and golfers have already been out here all week because there's been practice rounds all week long and a celebrity shootout

yesterday. the celebrities are playing for charity and this event raises quite a bit of money. to date the pebble beach pro-am has raised $8 million. >> my friend, my long time friend who is my caddy informed us charity called just people it's a very humble little organization. it's not supported very much in the sense financially. so whenever i can have money, i give it to him. >> reporter: and this is one of those events where kevin costner has been here for many, many years. we've seen him talk as he's come out and played. the one thing they're all the best golfers in the world here and that's remarkable golf to see. but the general manager was saying as well don't forget these celebrities are very good golfers themselves. they take it seriously and have good time. back live you can see folks getting ready again. this is where everyone rolls in

in egypt right now. this is a live picture. we're looking from a helicopter. obviously we're up in the air but look at the mass of people right now. this is the middle of egypt. these protesters are being joined by believe it or not thousands of striking workers. a live picture of the square in cairo. now strikes have been reported now in a variety of industries in egypt. public transportation, state electricity workers, service technicians at the canal and at factories all going on strike. they're demanding pay raises. a lot of egyptians are really angry by reports that egyptian president mubarak and his family have a mast billions of dollars at the same time 40% of the people in egypt live on just $2 a day. the u.s. national counterterrorism center director says another man is now replaced osama bin laden as the biggest terror threat to the united states. during testimony on capitol hill, the counterterrorism

chief said this man, u.s. born cleric and his al qaeda ties in the arabian peninsula are now a bigger danger to the united states. he speaks english. he sends out anti-american internet postings and e-mails. and he's trying to inspire islamic radicals living here in the u.s. to carry out attacks. in iraq at least eight people have died after a series of suicide bombings. and they were caught on video. [ sounds of gunfire ] >> incredible pictures. all of those bombs exploded within minutes of each other. officials say women and children are among the dead. they were believed to be on their way to one of the country's holiest shrines when the bombs blew up. in just the last 24 hours a rising star in the republican party had a fast and dramatic fall from grace. let's go right to allison burns in our washington d.c. bureau

for the craigslist controversy that ended a career. >> reporter: pam, this has to be one of the quickest congressional resignations i've seen. within hours of this photo being blasted online, new york congressman chris lee quit congress. the online site gawker first posted the picture and flirty e- mails that lee sent a woman he encountered through craigslist. he told the woman he was a divorced lobbiest but in reality he is a married congressman. last night the clerk of the house read lee's resignation on the house floor. >> the honorable speaker house of representatives sir i hereby give notice of my resignation from the united states house of representatives. >> reporter: lee issued a statement apologizing saying he'd made profound mistakes and did not want to be a distraction in congress. now taxpayers in new york have to pick up the million dollar tab for a special election for his seat. it is expected to remain in

republican hands. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco police are holding a public meeting tonight to get input for the selection of the city's next chief. the examiner reports 20 to 25 people have applied for the job. they include a mix of internal and external candidates. mayor lee is expected to appoint the new police chief by early to mid-march. tonight's meeting begins at 6:00 at the united irish cultural center. all right. our time now 6:19. let's go to sal. sorry, we're working you hard this morning, sal. what's happening? just looking around here at what we have to cover there's a lot to let you know of. in case you're just joining us there is a fatal accident we want to talk about. but the first thing i want to mention though is the commute in the east bay because it's getting busy here on highway 4. you can see traffic is going to be busy here at the highway 4 getting up to the concord area. traffic is going to be slow

the iphone. ktvu consumer editor is going to join us coming up on mornings on 2 when that iphone officially goes on sale. he's going to be outside a store in san francisco where we understand there are already some people lining up for the phone. jp morgan chase is apologizing for mistakenly foreclosing on the homes of 18 military families. the bank says that it has now returned ten of the homes and came to a settlement with some of the other homeowners. the homes were seized despite a law that restricts banks from foreclosing on homes owned by service members who are on active duty or recently returned. all right. time now 6:22. we're about to show you what san jose firefighters had to do, i mean railly do, to get a little boy who's finger got stuck, free. hollywood week starts tonight on "american idol." but not before the bay area had its turn in the spotlight. a lot of talent. good morning. northbound 280 traffic getting up to highway 17 not all that

gate bridge looks good north and southbound. new crash 101 university palo alto. we'll update that for you. all right. time now 6:25. the family of a 2-year-old boy is thanking san jose firefighters because they freed that little boy from a pickup truck. now this is a four hour ordeal started tuesday when the little boy dropped his hot wheels car into a hole in the wall of his dad's pickup truck. then he reached in to get the toy back and his finger got stuck. firefighters finally freed the little boy with a saw that they typically use to cut people out of bad car crashes. well, hospital workers in colorado found a very unique way to shoo away a bear. they used country music. the bear was hiding underneath that building in that crawl space right there. hospital workers called in state wildlife workers to shoo away the grizzly. to get him out they played little music. some country western music. and believe it or not the bear ran away. tonight kicks off hollywood week on "american idol," but

welcome back to the morning news. just ringing that opening bell in new york this morning. got some bright news on the employment picture this morning. jobs dropping new claims for jobs dropping in the last week by the most in about two years. we also had mixed earnings. you can see the bottom part of your screen the dow jones is dropping and it's probably because of those earnings

reports. some of them coming in disappointing and also lowering outlook going forward. pepsi co is one of the company that is did that. we'll keep watching numbers for you this morning. we'll go ahead and smile and say good morning to you. thank you for joining us here on the ktvu morning news thursday february 10th. i'm dave clark. good morning. i'm pam cook. time now is 6:30. oakland police are looking for two young suspects in a shocking child rape case. that victim is a 7-year-old boy. ktvu's kraig debro was the first reporter on the scene. he joins us now with what he's been able to learn about this investigation in the search for these suspects. kraig. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, pam. we're actually at 23rd avenue in fruit vale in oak lands. location's not relevant to what happened. but we're on our way to somewhere to get more information i think you'll want to see at 7:00. i just spoke to the president of the boys and girls club of oakland. he told me he spoke to the branch manager at the club at 85th and international boulevard and the manager said that nothing -- there was no

indication that anything was wrong at all yesterday afternoon. now the medical staff at children's hospital oakland called police last night at 8:45. police say the mother of a 7- year-old boy brought him to the hospital after he told his mom he had been raped. police say two other juvenile boys violently raped the boy in one of the bathrooms at the boys and girls club. police say they're going to return to the club this morning to figure out who was there and what they saw. also try to interview a number of people connected with the club to find out more information. i'm going to be speaking to him in just a few minutes and prepare that for you on mornings on 2. live in oakland, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:32. this morning sheriff deputies in richmond are out there searching for the gunman who fired shots on an ac transit bus. ktvu's jade hernandez has new information about one of the passengers injured in last

night's shooting. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. that passenger wasn't seriously injured, but shattered glass to the face did cause some injury overnight. we spoke to a deputy patrolling the area this morning. he said he wasn't on duty when the shooting happened. but this neighborhood has had its issues. we're live at the intersection of third and grove. and just a few feet away is the bus stop where this bus stopped and then was on its way to its destination when the shooting happened. we're live in west contra costa county near richmond. the shooting happened last night around 9:30. this is the damage left behind. you can see the back window where the bullet struck. an ac transit bus was driving by this intersection last night when bullets struck the side windows of the bus. shattered glass sprayed everywhere. we understand that there were a handful of passengers aboard. one passenger was hurt by flying glass. but no one was shot or seriously hurt. the bus we're told rolled to seventh and pennsylvania where it stopped. the sheriff's office did not offer a description of the

shooters or what kind of car they were in, if they were in one. right now investigators are looking into whether someone on board was targeted or if this was just a random shooting. now this area is very quiet this morning. it's blocks away from an industrial area. but where we are it's residential and filled with a lot of apartment buildings. as soon as the bus starts rolling we'll hear from passengers about last night's shooting. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:33. a napa county jail inmate is listed in critical condition right now after setting his clothing on fire in his cell. jail officials say the man wrapped himself in toilet paper last night then used a spark from a tv cord to stop a fire. we don't know the man's name yet. it hasn't been released. we do know he used to be a patient at napa state hospital. he was sent to jail by suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in connection to an incident that happened at the hospital. a san francisco man accused of beating a catholic priest

will be in court again today. this time he's expected to find out the charges he will face. now yesterday a judge ruled that the father will not have to testify in court in the case against william lynch. lynch is accused of beating the father last year but he also claims the priest sexually molested him and his brother when they were young boys. today a judge may also set a trial date. this morning firefighters in walnut creek are trying to determine the cause of an office building fire. that fire started about 8:00 last night. after about 45 minutes firefighters were able to get control of that fire. no injuries are report and the extent of damage is not yet known. time now 6:35. let's check on our commute. sal, still watching that deadly crash happened in san francisco? that's right. the crash is still blocking lanes. we're going to go right to it here. this is from news chopper 2 looking at the detour here on geary boulevard. that's geary boulevard heading outbound on the right.

and then that's geary boulevard on the left heading inbound. now the cars coming on outbound heading out towards the cliff house if you will out to the outer richmond on the right, this is tow truck now getting a little bit of progress putting this car up on tow trucks. by the way the car we noticed it had texas plates just to add another detail to the story. the vehicle involved in this fatal collision. still have to wait for another tow truck to get the other car out. the body was taken away about 45 minuting a now. they're still doing clean up. again, geary in san francisco. still closed, the intersection. and some of the muni buses are going around the block as you can see as you look down the block here they still have a closure and a lot of people are going around here in the richmond district. all right. let's go out and take a look at the bay bridge. that is backed up for a small delay here at the toll plaza. and this morning getting into the valley already some stop and go traffic on 237 at 880. let's go to steve. all right, sal. we have clear skies.

here you go for those of you -- you're listening but not watching, there's your day. now it's cold out there. now temperatures in the 30s even some low 40s in san francisco. but all signs point towards sunny and slightly warmer weather. our lows are a good ten degrees colder than yesterday morning. you lose the wind air mass is really dry it will be about the same. high pressure's our fair weather friend for about three or four more days. just some incredible as you know snow and cold east of the rockies while we sit here sunny and warm. you know things can't last and looks like next week we'll get back to rain. not today though. starting with upper 20s. yes, upper 20s. and santa rosa's right there at 31. they're close. but i'm sure not far away upper 20s somebody in the russian river. cold mornings, 26 to 46. but then sunshine coast, bay, inlandful we'll have low to mid- 60s. kenwood at 30. mill valley checked in at 36. alamo 36. palo alto all 36.

i think woodside i saw 34. cole valley in the city 42. officially 46. some cooler readings. 30s, 29 at napa airport also 29 at north napa i think off of hey began i believe. 38 fairfield. 32 livermore. 39 hayward. 36 redwood city and even oakland airport at 37. san mateo one of our target forecasts today 36, 58 and 64 for a high today. i believe the high yesterday was 63. so very close. it's again lows are so much colder. nothing's going to happen until probably sunday, monday. then we'll start to get cooler air in here and eventually looks like a system will carve itself out by tuesday. the big question is will it linger for a while or just be a one or two shot deal and get out of here? the weekend looks good. many people have valentine's day plans because it's on monday but celebrating saturday or sunday i would say saturday's the best day. rain returns and next week coldest morning, sunny, slightly warmer. 60 to 66 on the highs today.

still have a problem we've had for the entire morning commute. geary boulevard is shut down for a few city blocks because of a fatal collision. now they've taken the body away and they've removed one of the cars or have one car up on a tow truck. the other car still wedged up against the center median. still going to be at least another half hour before everyone can get through. muni reroutes in the area. all right. thank you. here's a quick look at some of the other top stories we're following right now at 6:43. right now oakland police are out there searching for two young boys accused of violently

sexually assaulting a 7-year- old boy in the bathroom of a boys and girls club. you're looking at video of police outside of the hospital where that young victim was taken. we're going to bring you a live report with all the latest coming up on mornings on 2. today is decision day at uc berkeley. the chancellor's expected to announce the fate of cal's baseball team and four other sports teams. they may all be eliminated because of the budget crisis. and police are looking or seeking criminal charges against a concord woman who's accused of hiding out a teenage runaway in her home. police say for two months the 15-year-old hid out at the 39- year-old's home. she's now back with her family. this morning we are learning that a leaking natural gas line is responsible for a huge explosion at a home in allentown, pennsylvania. the explosion rocked the neighborhood at 10:45 last night killing one person, destroying a home and starting several fires. police say five people are

still missing. several people and one firefighter are injured. today firefighters will begin searching the rubble for more victims. a first grade teacher in maryland is facing assault charges on suspicion of choking several students. susan was arrested in her home on tuesday morning. nine students report being abused by their teacher. some of the 6 and 7-year-olds say she kicked, punched and scratched them. eight of the students say it happened on campus during school hours last december. another student says the assault happened in march of last year. time now 6:45. incredible story. wounded congresswoman gabrielle giffords' ability to speak again is being called a milestone in her recovery. the congresswoman asked for toast earlier this week. and she's been speaking more and more since then. she's undergoing therapy as you know in a hospital in houston after being shot during an assassination attempt in tucson last month.

six people died in that massacre. 12 others were hurt. well, some of the best golfers in the world are starting their day early and right nearby. ktvu's claudine wong is watching for celebrities joins us from pebble beach this morning. claudine. >> reporter: yes, pam. this is right about the time we start doing this trying to figure out if anyone's coming our way that we recognize. the sun is actually coming up so we can show you this beautiful course out here at the monterey peninsula country club. just one of three courses being played today. this course was actually added last year. but very popular among the golfers. you can see this whole line of shuttle vans set up here. really no one else is allowed to park up here but the golfers and the folks running the event. it's just too many people. 10,000 to 12,000 people expected to come here today. that's because this is what they call a list day here at the mpcc. the day the best golfers and most well-known celebrities tee off. first tee times are at 8:00. we expect golfers to start arriving really just in the

next few minutes and going to that driving range to practice. it's just past the barricades is the driving range. there are millions at stake today. purse at $6 million and $1 million for charity. these celebrities are good golfers. very good golfers. although michael bolton was humble as he talked to us yesterday about his game. >> every time you walk up to the ball your nerves are acting up because this is not what we do for a living. i'm a lot better with a microphone. >> reporter: now in the last hour i did talk to the general manager out here at the mpcc. he says ticket sales are up and it's looking like we are going to see a great crowd today. >> it's the a day. today is the big day with the a group if you will. and so we are going to have quite a few spectators here. we are expecting somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000 to 12,000 today. >> reporter: again, back out here live at the mpcc you see the folks in those red jackets,

for hours. they're still trying to clean it up. the investigation was very thorough. but, again, looks like part of geary, the part heading out toward the ocean, has been reopened. looks like the inbound part is still closed. that's heading out toward into downtown inbound geary. again, if you are happen to be in a position where you can let us know how your bus is delayed here the 38 or the 33 would love to hear that from you. go ahead and find me on twitter there. this is a look you can see the car's now up on a tow truck and we're getting closer to having this open up. move along and take a look at westbound bay bridge coming up on to the middle of the toll plaza. it's about a five to ten minute delay. nothing major so far. in fact, i would go closer to five here. livermore a crash westbound 580 at springtown boulevard. it's a minor accident. but the slow traffic is there anyway. if you're driving to the south bay anywhere about the only slow traffic we see is on 17 at 85 and on 280 at 17.

6:50. let's go to steve. thank you much, sal. very good morning to you all. looks like a decent pattern into about sunday and then changes next week. the big news this morning i guess it's cold. but relatively speaking there's some readings coming in by the way from oklahoma city coldest ever minus 24, 27 degrees yesterday. brutally cold for some. and the pattern has been locked in for the longest time. it's been about six weeks while we sit here complaining about 30s to start off we end up with 60s. patchy fog maybe as we head into the weekend. the air mass is very dry though. mainly sunny and warmer on friday and saturday. not a lot. but a little bit. nothing like last week. remember last week 70s and 80s? won't see that. the weekend will be mostly sunny. a little cooler on sunday and clouds and patchy fog starting to increase in advance of a system that will be here tuesday, the 15th. that's what i've been going with for a long time. looks pretty solid. today looks solid for sunshine. wind tailed off for many. sonoma down to 31.

welcome back. bay area cycling fans you'll have to hit the road if you want to see this year's amgen tour of california bike race. the eight day race starts may 15th. the first stage will start at lake tahoe's north shore. it will end at north star. the second stage also begins at tahoe at squaw valley. it will end in sacramento. the third stage goes from auburn to modesto. now all of this news triggered a big celebration in auburn last night. race fans got together for a party after finding out their town will be a big part of california's biggest bike race.
