what it could do this morning to prevent from closing that street this morning. mostly quiet right now. mostly he says. but rain is on the way. in fact heavy rain by this evening. impact on the highs today coming up. and berkeley could soon put out the welcome mat for some prisoners. is the community welcoming the idea? the morning news continues. well, good morning to you. welcome to a brand new day. it's tuesday february 15th. i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. let's start with steve paulson because the weather is supposed to get a little rainy this afternoon. >> it will, pam, dave, good morning. cloudy skies. light rain overnight. not too much. only a little bit left. but we will see cloudy windy conditions in the morning. very mild lows in the 50s. end up with 50s and low to mid- 60s on the highs. but by this afternoon the north bay and then for everyone by tonight moderate to heavy rain and then cold air arrives later tonight. here's sal. good morning.

right now traffic on 280 northbound is moving along well getting up to highway 17 no major problems there. also this morning if you are on southbound 680 looks good on the way to the south bay. concern this morning over a very unsteady wall in oakland near the park street bridge. looks like it may collapse or topple over. several roads were shut down as a precaution. ktvu's kraig debro is out there right now. how does it look this morning, kraig? >> reporter: dave, ford street isn't open. a truck moving through here right now. it's not just trucks. there are several cars that use this street. people coming from alameda across the park street bridge into oakland through ford going north on 880 or south on 880, either way it's very important. so far we have not heard from city officials as to what they've done to prevent the problem from happening again. we could be looking at a problem with the morning commute as you watch more cars go through this area now. that's exactly what happened last night. a big problem.

ford street closed down because one of the buildings here has a wall like the leaning tower of pisa. traffic had to be diverted because of threat it might fall into the street. the street reopened about 10:00 p.m. last night. it's not clear what was done to make the wall safe enough to warrant the reopening. a man who works in this area says he thinks the weather played a role in what happened to the wall. >> i think it's more of the rain and the time that it's been standing open. it's been four years now? almost five years been standing wide open and the weather's finally won the battle. >> reporter: the building stands vacant because of this huge fire back in 2006. ktvu was the first on the scene to bring you these pictures from that morning. musicians and others used the buildings for storage as a place to rehearse the fire gutted the building but the real damage was done to the carpet business next door. the fire destroyed a huge warehouse of product and spewed potentially toxic smoke into

the air. now this building right here that the light is on right now on ford street this building has been empty since that fire. look upstairs and you can see the windows are boarded up here. not seeing the ceiling of the roof. you would be looking straight down the building into the floor because it's completely gutted. no one was injured in that fire, but as the peak of the commute hour is approaching we'll find out if the city is going to be planning something this morning that could prevent a repeat of yesterday which did play a lot of -- add a lot of delays here on ford street. live in oakland, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. at its meeting tonight the berkeley city council will vote on a resolution to invite two detainees from guantanamo to relocate to berkeley once they're released. one of the detainees is a russian ballet dancer. the other an algierian man who was once a chef. under the plan the two would live with families in berkeley. a member of the berkeley's peace and justice commission says the move would right some

of the wrongs of the federal government. time now 6:04. more than a dozen veterans are homeless this morning after a fire in east palo alto. ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live to tell us how some of them managed to get away from the fast moving flames. tara. >> reporter: dave, this fire was intense. you can see by the black char marks where the flames lapped up against the roof. if you can take a look here at this particular window, this is where a man jumped in order to save his life. firefighters arrived around 4:30 yesterday afternoon here off of bay road and found people trapped upstairs. this is actually a board and care facility that houses more than a dozen veterans. officials say two more people actually jumped from windows at the back of the house. >> when i looked out my door black smoke was billowing, saw a roommate playing with a fire extinguisher and another roommate totally freaking out. i heard loud pops and glass exploding. i knew it was time to go. >> reporter: now firefighters threw applauders when they arrived in order to save the

people trapped upstairs. one issue investigators will be looking at today the staircase. it burned so badly that firefighters couldn't use it to access the upstairs. it is the only way apparently to get from floor to floor. officials say that's okay for a home, but this is more of a hotel-type situation. so were any codes violated? they will have to look at when it was last inspected. back here live we want to show you actually where the kitchen started. firefighters allowed us access to the back here. apparently one of the men who lives here was cooking in this kitchen. take a look up here. he was using one of the grills or one of the burners and apparently some grease ignited the fire. he then ran throughout the house trying to let other people know about the fire and got them out safely. now, 14 vets live here in all. they are all safe but homeless and the v.a. is currently putting them up. there are firefighters here on scene right now. they are on fire watch. and they will be making sure there are no more flare ups here. live in east palo alto, tara

moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:06. an effort to clean up sidewalks starts today in san francisco's bay view hunters point. the city says illegal dumping on the streets is a major problem in the area. a team of city workers are going door to door. they'll do that this afternoon, telling business owners and residents it's against the law to dump couches, mattresses and construction materials on the sidewalk. that illegal dumping actually costs taxpayers millions of dollars to clean up. a critical hearing is set for tomorrow in oakland's controversial plan to crack down on violent street gangs. a judge will begin hearing evidence on the plan to impose restrictions on dozens of suspected gang members in the city's fruit vale neighborhood. the city attorney says the existing injunction in the northern part of oakland has been a tremendous success in fighting violent crime and drug dealing. last year a judge barred suspected gang members from hanging out together and imposed a 10:00 p.m.

curfew. however, opponents say the city should instead focus on education and job programs that steer young people away from gangs. the evening commute as we've been telling you could be a tough one today as a new storm moves in. and the california highway patrol is bracing for the worst. the chp is moving its resources around today preparing for that storm. officers who normally work inside are being moved outside to help with traffic enforcement. all of this after officers in sonoma county had to respond to almost 40 accidents yesterday. well, police have reopened the southbound lanes of interstate 880 in hayward following a bad accident. an suv, a van and a car all collided about 8:30 last night. five people including a child were all injured. all of them had to be taken to the hospital. and the chp investigation into the cause of that crash continues. time now 6:08. more flight delays at sfo are possible today because of that

with no major problems. let's move to 880 now. northbound and southbound that traffic is looking good with no major issues here. although it is windy, you can see our camera is shaking. and in the south bay we're off to a nice start. the road sensors showing a bit of slowing on 280 north and southbound and on 85 passing 17. 6:09. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. good morning everyone. had our first rain day in february yesterday. we went two weeks almost without any rain. it was sunny and warm. that's all changed. the big changes started yesterday. now i know we had some rain yesterday but it was a windy day across the board. today's a rain day. but for many it won't be until late this afternoon and this evening. but it's decent. then tomorrow will be colder. so if i had to pick one word for monday, tuesday and wednesday, windy, rain and then tomorrow colder. very cold air coming in wednesday afternoon and evening. and then thursday. the system is still hung up on the northern part of the state. you can see though some of that green turning to white up in the area wind advisories and

winter weather advisories are already posted. they're out for the sierra nevada starting at noon. if you need to go now would be a good time. wind probably a bigger issue than snow. by tonight snow level coming down around 5,000 feet. then come down tonight and tomorrow. for us one area of light rain go through this morning. things are rather calm right now rain-wise. still wind out there. napa two-thirds. petaluma half inch. rodeo, crockett, .42. after that there really wasn't much unless you're in some of the higher elevations or up towards the russian river. concord, san carlos .07. not much. it's really mild though for most. but there are a few breaks in the clouds towards san jose looking at the web camera from the meteorology department san jose state windy, cool to mild. everybody in the 50s in advance of this system which is right -- there's the front. that's the cold air. that's really cold air. this is all plunging southward. we're in for a very active pattern the next 36 to 48 hours

and maybe out seven to ten days. light morning rain but mainly cloudy and windy. moderate to heavy wind comes in late this afternoon into tonight. 48 to 54. cloudy and mild. then cloudy, breezy, rain moving into the north baby noon and by tonight everybody gets in on it. 56 to 64 though for the highs today. 50s for some. low mid-60s for others because of that south breeze could be a rather mild day towards morgan hill, gill roy, san jose, redwood city, pleasanton, livermore all in the 60s. but then tomorrow it will be 50s and on thursday we'll continue the theme of colder unsettled weather all the way into friday. dave and pam. well, the city of san jose says it's broke. and this morning hundreds of city workers know that they may soon be out of a job. but despite that efforts to beautify the city are still a priority. we'll tell you why. how long is too long to be stuck inside of a plane on the tarmac? the limits one bay area lawmaker's now proposing.

look at these pictures in iran today. members of parliament broke into this chant. they're saying opposition leaders should be put to death, executed, following a protest on the streets of tehran. now tens of thousands of protesters defied the government warnings not to demonstrate yesterday. riot police you see there battled the protesters.

they used tear gas and batons. reportedly at least one person was killed. while in a major policy speech today secretary of state hillary clinton will warn repressive governments all over the world that restricting the internet will not hold back demands for democratic reform. secretary clinton will pledge u.s. support for those trying to use the internet to promote democracy and use the recent uprising in egypt as an example. she says regimes that restrict internet usage may be able to with stand calls for change for a short time, but not forever. the committee appointed by egypt's ruling military to amend the constitution says that new document will be only temporary until democratic rule is established. the committee says restrictions on freedoms will be removed. the military's been in power ever since former president mubarak stepped down on friday. and they say they will hand over power to an elected government after the elections. today napa county

congressman mike thompson will introduce a bill for improved passenger rights on airplanes. as allison burns reports from our washington d.c. newsroom, thompson wants to make sure passengers are protected. allison. >> reporter: pam, and after some new protections went into effect last year, it has been an incredible turn around just a handful of cases of airlines breaking the rules. even this past christmas that big storm in new york airports were basically crippled but still passengers were given food and water and allowed to get off the plane if it had been stuck for more than three hours. the department of transportation set a fine of $27,000 last year for every passenger stuck more than three hours. but airlines don't like these new rules at all. they've been canceling a lot more flights. in fact, there were nearly 30,000 more flight cancellations last year than before those fines took effect.

now house republicans are pushing to reverse the rules. but today passenger groups and congressional democrats like congressman mike thompson are pushing to make the rules even stronger. in fact, a woman from the bay area is taking the lead on all of this. we have a crew doing an interview with her at the capitol right now. we'll have that for you later this morning on the morning news. for now live in washington , washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:18. layoffs are possible for san jose city employees even if the unions make concessions. san jose mayor chuck reed blames out of control retirement costs. those benefits reportedly will hit $61 million this coming fiscal year. mayor reed says if no union concessions are made, 1100 jobs could be eliminated. he also warns concessions won't be enough to completely solve the problem. >> 10% for next year will give us about $38 million in savings against $110 million problem. so it's just a piece of what we

need. >> he says it may mean reducing staffing on fire engines, restricting overtime and reducing benefits of the future police officers. san jose has a $110 million budget shortfall. despite the budget crunch, san jose's downtown is moving into its third year of a beautification program. right now the city helps pay for trash pick up, graffiti removal and plants and flowers. property owners agreed to increase their property assessments and chip in some money, but they say they're worried that the strained finances could force the city to cut its contribution. still, a city official says the money is an investment in san jose to keep the downtown beautiful and safe. san jose city council votes tonight on whether to move forward with an energy saving plan that would dim some street lights. that idea is to convert all 62,000 street lights in the city to l.e.d. lights that can be dimmed. now it's estimated that that could cut san jose's $4 million

annual street light energy bill by more than half. but some people say they want to see just how much darker their streets will be. sal is shedding some light on our commute. i know it's getting biddier at the toll plaza right? >> it is. and right now we're seeing the effect of them turning on the metering lights. a little more waiting here at the toll plaza especially if you're not using fast track. you can see the fast track drivers getting through pretty well. might be an incentive for you to get one if you've been thinking about it because at this time of the morning it does pay off. no problems on the upper deck of the bay bridge. and the southeast bay 680 looks pretty good. there was an earlier accident on 680 much earlier. that's gone. 880 southbound at dixon landing three to four car accident in the center divide and traffic is slow passing the scene. so we have a new accident on 880. this is a look now at the peninsula. our road sensor's not picking up a lot of slow traffic. i mentioned that accident 880 southbound at dixon landing

still causing a little bit of slow traffic. 580 coming in from the tracy area over the pass a little slowing there but dublin traffic looks good all the way over to castro valley. 6:20. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. cloudy, windy this morning. there's been some light rain. heavier rain will come in tonight. if you need to take care of anything, carnival's splendor. my ship came in but i was at the bus station. [ laughter ] we have a pretty good front coming in tonight. it's on the north coast right there you can see it. see to the left satellite and radar, that's really cold air. that will be in tomorrow. winter weather advisories have already started for the northern mountains and the sierra nevada starts at noontime. so if you need to go, the earlier the better. pretty good rain up there eureka north of fort brag. it's on its way. it will be into lake county and sweeping over the area by this afternoon and this evening. it's not that cold although wind might make it feel colder.

in the 50s for temperatures right now. lows on the mild side. that system is plunging southward along with that cold air. so today cloudy, windy at times. afternoon and evening rain. there's some light rain in the morning but this is ho hum stuff compare today what's coming in later on. 50s and 60s on the temperatures because of this south wind in advance of the front could get mild conditions. by tomorrow we won't be saying that. it will be colder. much colder. then turn showery. another front comes through on thursday for another round of rain and cold and showery on friday. there is a possibility it won't be very warm but there could be a break on saturday. pam and dave. well, a man hunt for u.s. soldier accused of rape. a search that began in georgia could possibly end here in california. also a battle over hungry customers in santa rosa. what restaurant owners are saying the city's allowing competitors to drive up and drive down their sales.

good morning. traffic moving along pretty well here on some bay area bridges it's already a bit busy at the bay bridge as you can see. the fast track users are getting ahead of the others. san mateo, golden gate and richmond bridge traffic doing well. with some snow and high winds at the upper levels yesterday,

the sierra, winds blew so hard sugar bowl and connor ski ranch had to shut lifts for safety reasons. resorts are happy about the storms blowing in after a dry january. and the fresh comes just before the long president's day weekend which is usually a boost for the skiing and boarding. this is a live picture as you can see. you can tell that the driving there wouldn't be that good either. remember to carry your chains. a u.s. army private who escaped from military custody in georgia may now be heading here to california. 20-year-old daniel braiselington escaped from army jail guards on friday as he was being returned to jail following a doctor's appointment. he's accused of raping a 15- year-old girl and awaiting extradition to los angeles county. he's a native of palm dale which is north of los angeles near edwards air force base. he could be armed and is considered dangerous. your time now 6:26.

a food fight in sonoma county is one that's pitting sit down restaurants against food trucks. the city of santa rosa's in the middle of an eight week program called munch monday. the program allows food trucks to park on city streets and they offer gourmet lunches to the work crowd. now some downtown restaurants are criticizing this program. >> they come down to money, what they're investing in their facilities and the downtown area versus what they're investing in the trucks that come downtown. their basic concern is competition and pulling from their sit down customers. >> downtown santa rosa restaurants are now in the process of forming an association in case munch monday becomes a permanent event. well, a big boost for bart in its 50 year plan to go south. but there's another possible roadblock 3,000 miles away. >> reporter: how a tilting wall could once again interfere with the commute near alameda into

markets. we'll keep watch on the numbers. we'll go ahead and say good morning to you. thank you for joining us on the ktvu morning news tuesday february 15th. i'm dave clark. good morning. i'm pam cook. time now's 6:30. in the news right now a very unsteady wall may effect the morning commute. it's right near the park street bridge. heavy traveled route between alameda and oakland. several roads are actually shut down just as a precaution because this wall looks like it may collapse or topple over. ktvu's kraig debro's out there right now. how's it looking now, kraig? >> reporter: good morning, dave. certainly that was the case last night. this morning they're open. but i want to show you these cars as they zip through on ford street right here. as you watch the cars zip through on ford street you'll see the building behind it. the major question this morning is why the cars being allowed to race past the building on ford street because last night the city of oakland closed the street because a wall on that building right here on the 2800 block is still leaning dangerously toward the street. police reopened this part of

ford street around 10:00 p.m. last night. but we've not been able to determine what the city did to make it safe enough for drivers to wiz by in their vehicles without fear the wall will fall. locals say the wall has been leaning for about two or three weeks. but the rain over the past day or so made it worse. the man with whom we spoke says a resident called the fire department yesterday. when that resident noticed the wall leaning as recently as a month earlier the man who works in the area says the building owner put two garage doors in. >> i think they were sealing it up probably the property owners to keep the homeless out and vagrants and keep people from tearing it up. probably had plans to do something with the building. guess it's a little late now. >> reporter: the building has stood vacant because of this huge fire in 2006. musicians and others used the building as storage or a place to rehearse. the fire gutted the building but the real damage was done to the carpet business next door. the fire destroyed a huge warehouse of product and spewed

potentially toxic smoke into the air. let's take another live look at the picture here. just missed a car going by. a lot of cars use this street to go 880 northbound or east 23rd avenue to get into oakland. right now if you look at this building it's hard to tell from this angle it's leaning. it is. if you're looking at it from a perpen dick already angle you can tell how bad it is. what has the city done to shore the building since last night? we aim to find that out. live in oakland, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. a man and woman in critical condition this morning from carbon monoxide poisoning. firefighters found the couple unconscious when they broke into their apartment sunday night after responding to reports of a gas leak. 18 others had already evacuated the building. inspectors found decades old wall heaters in the injured couple's apartment and one other unit. they say the heaters are not vented according to the current code standards.

time now 6:33. several san francisco supervisors will be among those attending a fire victim fundraiser tonight. it's to help those who lost their homes in a series of suspicious fires in the castro district earlier this month. investigators say an arsonist set fire to several victorian homes. luckily no one was hurt. those fires left several people homeless and caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. tonight's fundraiser will be at the lookout bar and grill at 16th and market. it will be from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. and donations will be accepted at the door. san diego state university has now become the first cal state campus to turn away local qualified applicants. now there's a concern this practice will spread to other campuses in the csu system. now spaces as you know is limited because of budget cuts. officials say they relaxed the local guarantee just to boost graduation rates by accepting higher qualified applicants.

california's legislative analyst office wants lawmakers to take action to protect student access to local csu campuses. tonight the dublin city council could make it more difficult for people to have a cigarette. the council will consider whether to extend a smoking ban in larger apartment complexes. the current city law requires complexes that have 16 or more apartments to forbid smoking in half of the units. the new proposal would increase that percentage to 70%. well, the 50 year battle to bring bart to san jose has cleared another big hurdle. yesterday the federal transit administration recommended that bart receive $130 million in federal funds. now that clears the way for construction to begin in 2012. however, republicans on capitol hill must still approve the project and they are promising to slash billions out of president obama's transportation budget also released yesterday. time now 6:35. sal is watching highway 24 and

all of the busy bay area roads. that's right. highway 24, dave and pam, we watch it once it starts getting busier we know that the commute is really in the peak. it's not quite at peak yet. but you can tell a lot of people are driving to the tunnel from the contra costa area. 680's okay. highway 4 busy in antioch as usual. and the benicia bridge not effected by any stalls or accidents. move along and take a look at the bay bridge here. traffic here is okay. you can see that there's a back up now even for the fast track users as i look there are no crashes though reported on the upper or on the lower deck. this morning we're looking at the livermore commute via our maps. some slow traffic getting into livermore, but after that it's okay. no problems across the bay. burling gap, redwood city, about even right now. pretty good. 63:67. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. good morning. cloudy, breezy, windy. we've had very light rain overnight. heavier rain comes in this afternoon and evening.

and the cold air then really takes a plunge tomorrow. so the pattern is very active. we had the first start of it yesterday. i just put in one word from monday, it was windy. i know we had rain but it was mainly windy for everyone. today will be rain but not until this afternoon and evening. and then tomorrow colder as everything settles in on the west coast. today morning hours look pretty good actually if you don't mind clouds. mostly cloudy, breezy to windy. evening rain. some of this moderate to heavy overnight into tomorrow. then the cold air arrives. cold unstable air showery pattern. and lower snow levels. the five-day outlook even the seven to tip day keeps us cold and breezy rainy pattern. the question is we might be far enough north by the next seven to ten days might be digging into southern california more than us but i'm getting way ahead of ourselves. already snow in mt. chias that. one of our observers in redding 49 and raining there. that's where the heavy rain is. we have a ways to go.

what's come over us has been very light so far. it's just now starting to move into though reports coming in will et over two inches of rain. this has a little bit of punch. 50s, 54 mountain view. 52 napa. 52 fairfield. santa rosa. south wind in advance of this system there's the front that comes in tonight. then that's the cold air pool that will start to settle in over us tomorrow. big changes just upstream. light morning rain but mainly cloudy to mostly cloudy. breezy to windy. already good gusts along the coast. higher elevations moderate to heavy rain comes in later this afternoon into tonight. so evening rain forecasted highs though they'll settle into the 60s due to the south wind for many. upper 50s. farther north cooler earlier rain farther south more clouds than anything else. and tonight the rain comes in may even take a while to get to the santa clara valley might be by this evening tonight overnight. but it will arrive and cold air really moves in on wednesday. it's -- i might be a little high on that 58.

thursday another front moves through and then more cold air. maybe a break on saturday. maybe. we'll deal with that on friday though. pam, dave. all right. yes, we will. nearly 800,000 child safety seats are being recalled. they are sold under cost co and safety first brand names. federal officials say the harness lock and release button on the seats don't always return to locked positions which could result in injuries during a crash. if you own one of these seats, the company will send you a kit to fix it. there are no reports of any injuries so far. microsoft hopes to connect its phone software to the x box after making a connection with nokia phones. they were announced at the mobile phone conference in spain this week. 6:39. guess who's coming to silicon valley? the white house announcement that's causing a lot of excitement. it's the ultimate business meeting. >> reporter: we'll tell you

city council will consider a watered down version of a bill that caused national controversy. back in december the council briefly considered a resolution to call bradly manning a hero. now he's the army private suspected of leaking the wikileaks documents, but the council was criticized for honoring a man some consider a criminal. so tonight the council will vote on a new resolution calling for manning to be given humane treatment while he awaits his trial. again, we were talking about this invitation that the city of berkeley is thinking about extending as ktvu channel 2 reporter ally tells us it has to do with detainees from guantanamo bay. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, pam. yes, it is item number 18 on the agenda for tonight's berkeley city council meeting. it's a resolution proposed by the city's peace and justice commission. and this resolution asks the city of berkeley to invite one or two guantanamo bay detainees to come live here.

now the resolution specifically lists two men as possible candidates. one is a russian ballet dancer. the other is a chef from algeria. now they are currently being held at guantanamo bay and have been there for the last six to eight years. the commission says neither have been ever charged with a crime by the u.s. government. and that they expect the men will be released at some point. the resolution also mentions that the u.s. government has asked many other countries to accept former guantanamo bay detainees so it should do the same. >> i think it's a bad idea and they shouldn't bring those people here to berkeley. in fact, they shouldn't have any places like guantanamo bay. >> i think it's a great idea. honestly, i think what we did in guantanamo's completely unjust. >> reporter: now the resolution goes onto say that if the men were brought to berkeley, the city would help them find housing and job training and that written resolution the peace and justice commission lists local nonprofits and

volunteers have already said they would be willing to help. but under current federal law there's a ban on allowing people who have spent time at guantanamo bay to live in the u.s. so the berkeley city manager is recommending that the city council not take any action on this resolution tonight because it's already not allowed under current law. but people supporting the resolution say part of the point of this resolution is to ask congress and to prompt congress to maybe reverse that ban and change some of its laws. later on this morning we're working on getting hold of someone from the berkeley peace and justice commission to tell us a little bit more about their resolution. reporting live in berkeley, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:46. president obama's coming here to the bay area. thursday evening he'll meet with high-tech business leaders. so far the white house has only said the president will talk with business leaders in a session. they'll focus on jobs, innovation and green technology. no information's been released on where that meeting will be held or whether any part of it will be public. the president is expected to

stay overnight here in the bay area before heading to oregon friday. the nephew of the dali lama killed in florida while taking part in a 300-mile walk for tibet. he was hit by an suv on the side of the state highway about 7:30 last night. he was 45 years old and the son of the dali lama's late brother. he was walking to raise awareness of the tibet fight for independence from china. still no word on what caused the death of a passenger on born board cal train. a crew member found the man about 2:00 yesterday afternoon when the train stopped at the hillsdale station. the name of that man has not been released. time now 6:47. tv coverage planned for the trial of michael jackson's doctor, that will be talked about at a big hearing today. dr. conrad murray has already pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges in connection with michael jackson's death. now lawyers are expected to present a list of witnesses who

could be called to testify. the trial is due to begin on march 24th. windshield washer fluid is credited with saving the life of an elderly man lost in the arizona desert. 84-year-old hank spent five nights there after missing his exit off the freeway. police say he drove on for about 17 miles on a dirt road and then got into an accident. he was finally found by some campers who flagged down a helicopter that was actually looking for him. he suffers from dementia but was able to use things in his car to survive. >> he took a rock, opened the hood of his car and broke the windshield wiper fluid and was using that with a napkin to keep him hydrated. >> now he also sipped some of the fluid. he ate the dinner leftovers that were luckily in his car and he kept warm by using the floor mats as blankets. >> very resourceful. >> yeah. time now 6:48. hey, sal, any problems with the

similar bonuses. total payments to 76,000 american employees will top $400 million with many hourly workers receiving a $4,000 bonus. but critics say gm should pay back the money it owes the government beforehanding out bonuses. well, driving people to drink. a former san francisco supervisor, chris daily, says a political war of words has joined business to a bar he owns.

welcome back. former san francisco supervisor doesn't seem to avoid confrontation even now he's out of politics. he owns a bar called the butt tavern right down the street from the plumber's union headquarters. that has led the head of the union who battled with daily to call for a boycott of his bar. he says that has not hurt his business and he thinks the boycott has actually brought him more customers. while he was a supervisor, he was known for many obscene outbursts. today is round two of man versus machine on jeopardy. the tv show two of jeopardy's most successful champions are going up against an ibm computer named watson. >> you can't confuse it or trick it. it doesn't get frustrated. but it will sometimes make
