few minutes away. at 7:02. to the desk. about 15 minutes ago, a wood chipper truck arrived to remove a tree that came down along highway 4 at westbound interstate 80. claudine wong joins us live from hercules now. claudine, just a moment ago, we saw some of the limbs coming down. they are busy at work. >> reporter: that's right. that-- the plan right now is to try to get this cleaned up as quickly as possible and i want to take you over here because i want to show you what they are doing. this tree is gonna be -- is actually held up by only a few branches. what they are trying to do is cut all of this down. you can see there's two or three here and then they are gonna let it drop down. presumably from the heavy rain, it just toppled over here and when it did that at 5:00 a.m.

this morning, a couple of cars hit it. but fortunately, nobody was hurt. you can see this big pile of branches. they chopped out as much as they could, dumped it over the side and got traffic moving along highway 4. you can see there's still a bit of a backup coming off highway 4. they want -- they want to get these people here. and as the morning commute gets underway, it gets more backed up and slower. they have to slowly take off pieces of the tree and then they will let it drop. the caltrans people said they don't care if it hits the fence. they don't care what it does. they just want it off the freeway. we're gonna monitor the situation. i don't know how long it's gonna take. but they should get it cleared up in the next hour or so. live in hercules, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we will check back for an update. meanwhile, huge waves are expected along the coast and a high surf advisory is in effect

until 3:00 this afternoon. this is video from pacifica this morning. within the past hour, pacifica police decided to keep the pier closed. the biggest waves are expected to arrive at the -- as the sun comes up. if you go to the beach -- go to the beach today, be careful. riptide danger is high and there's renewed concern about the crumbling cliff side. and coming up at 7:30, we'll have an -- we'll have a live update from that location. 7:04. there's word this morning, the lawrence livermore lab is having trouble keeping track of drugs, like cocaine, opium and heroin. the inspector general of the u.s. energy department says some of those trucks are missing, while other -- drugs are missing, while others show more of the drug onhand than was legally purchased. the drugs are used for biomedical research and the general says that lapse is in account something under investigation. one of the bay area's top

narcotics officers is in jail, facing felony drug charges. ktvu's kraig debro joining us live to tell us how this shocking arrest could affect many more criminal cases. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we're in antioch. at least two cars, two police cars here you can see right now came to this antioch neighborhood because this is where norman welsh lives. he was the man arrested along with a former colleague yesterday. these are only allegations. we wanted to get a comment, interview from the family but they declined. now, whoever declined the interview, called police. and a young woman came pulled up and there was an officer with her. and they are in the house. now, the two police officers

are in jail. welsh is the head contra costa county's drug force. the other, is a cop. both were arrested wednesday morning in the city of benicia. this is very unusual, of course, because both men have reputations in the law enforcement community. we also spoke to a neighbor who expressed surprise at the allegations. >> we've been together for the past ten years. >> the charges are very, very serious. he's very, very upset and having a very difficult time with this. we will meet these charges head on and we will will deal with them appropriately. >> reporter: michael cordoza is welsh's attorney. later, yesterday, search warrants were served and carried out at butler's private eye business in concord. both officers worked for the

antioch police. welsh for 12 years. both men are suspected of possessing, transporting, and selling drugs and conspiracy and other possible charges. right now, allegations only. charges have not been filed. cardoza is going to seek to eliminate $600's -- eliminate the 600,000 bail. there's no arraignment time set. but it may be difficult to prosecute one or both men because the contra costa county's d.a. aoffice is supposed to pros -- d.a.'s office is supposed to prosecute these crimes. we have to find out who is going to prosecute the case. reporting live in antioch, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:07. this morning, the labor department announced first-time

claims for unemployment insurance are up. 410,000 people filed for new jobless benefits. that's up 25,000 from the week before and 10,000 more than economists had forecast. continuing claims were also up but only by 1,000. there are now .91 million people receiving unemployment compensation across the country. president obama will arrive later today for a quick overnight visit to the bay area. the president is scheduled to meet with high-tech business leaders at a private dinner. among the executives due to meet with the president, facebook ceo, mark zuckerberg, apple's ceo, steve jobs, and google's ceo, eric schmidt. the head will spend the day and evening here before heading to oregon. >> and that traffic will increase -- >> yes. >> right now we need to know what's going on. sal, what is going?

15,000 feet in lake county. the snow level is down to -- that's a very strong system. it's taking aim at the north bay first but it will affect everybody. mount hamilton's picking up light know. there are other areas picking up white there. had a lot of reports around 1,000 to 2,000 feet of snee. you can see a little break for some. there are maybe a few breaks in the clouds. but the system is beginning to pump in a lot of rain and again there's -- part of that system that shows snow towards san jose and back over towards the peninsula and the santa cruz mountains. 39degrees up at lompico. even down to 650 feet on over ken at boulder creek had some

we're back live, where caltrans made quick work of this tree. this tree call crashing down at 5:00 this morning. a couple of cars on interstate 80 did hit it but fortunately there were no injuries. you can see traffic starting to move through here. they've been able to clear most of the debris and they are trying to clear out now. so two hours after this started, fortunately it looks like it's clearing up. we've gotta get off the road because they are clearing the roadway and hopefully traffic will be moving through here smoothly again. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you for the update, claudine wong. it's 7:15. right now, officials in the sierra are preparing for the next round of snow to hit. if you are planning to head up to any of the lake tahoe resorts. caltrans is requiring chains on all vehicles except four-wheel

investigators say thomas adams was driving on a curve in the wet weather, when his car veered into the path of a truck on highway 101 on tuesday. adams had been on the force for only two years working first in oakland. two women convicted of posing as san bruno explosion victims won't be doing any more jail time. yesterday, a judge put them on three years' probation and gave them credit for the jail time they've already served. lisa justin and sonya smith were the first two defendants convicted of scams connected to last september's gas pipeline disaster. investigators say they claim they had lost their homes in order to get free hotel rooms, gift cards and other benefits. it is 7:23. an ancient relic from a catholic saint will be on display at a berkeley parish today. it's a bone believed to be that of st. mary magdalene -- mag ga

mountaintops. we've been checking our cameras on mount hamilton in the south bay. you can see this picture. it's a little hazy but there looks like snow there in the foot hills. behind it is mount hamilton. but that's fogged in. snow levels are expected to drop down to 2500 feet, possibly lower. again, this is snow in the foothills of san jose. we have a always received calls from people -- we've also received calls from people in lake county. steve said it's in the 30s in lake county, snow is down to about 1500 feet. time now, 7:32. we're still following overnight news coming from investigation. pg&e investigating -- coming from vallejo. pg&e investigating a gas leak at the safeway. the super market lost power around 3:00 a.m., along with 1700 nearby homes and businesses. there are now reports that the gas leak and the power outage are tried to a -- are tied to a

generator problem at super market. at last check the power is back on. a 14-year-old boy who is accuse of planning to kill his teacher in pinole is in juvenile hall this morning. he was arrested on tuesday. police say when they searched his belongings, they found a notebook that contained notes on how he planned to attack his teacher. the suspect is a freshman at pinole valley high. police say he was angry because he leave -- because he believed the teacher had embarrassed him in class. three people are getting treatment for gunshot wounds following a shooting in oakland from last night on hunter street. police say the victims were shot inside of a car. one of the shooting victims was a woman. we're hearing she may have been shot in the back. police are searching for two suspects who reportedly escaped in a car that was possibly a buick regal. also today, vallejo police are expected to release the name of the man whose body was

found in the carquinez strait. according to the coast guard, the body was pulled from strait in vallejo yesterday afternoon around 2:30. investigators say it's still not clear how the man died. well, at 5:45 this morning, president obama is scheduled to land on air force one in san francisco. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom now to tell us who i -- which high-tech business lead, the president will be having dinner with and what they are gonna talk about. >> well, the president is meeting with some of the biggest names in business and is said to be making the stop in silicon valley to get support for his budget. this week, president obama released his 3.7 3 trillion- dollar budget proposal for the next fiscal year. it's going to be a tough sell for republicans. even some democrats. he does discuss a variety of job creation strategies such as federal tax credits for research and development and nearly $200 billion in research

gunman who robbed a sears store may have hid inside the department store and waited until closing time to strike. this happened around 9:30 tuesday night at the sears store in north gate in terra linda. after the store closed, police say the suspect got into an office pointed a gun at the manager and demand cash. he did fire a shot in the manager's direction but missed. that suspect escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. the oakland raiders are getting harsh criticism from a rather surprising source. the former defense secretary for the bush administration calls the silver and black evil. that kent from donald rumsfeld came during -- that comment from donald rumsfeld came when he said he sported the pittsburgh steelers because they are the long-time rival of the raiders and he said, nobody could support the raid, they are evil. i-- support the raiders, they are evil.

to be affected by a crash on the san mateo bridge. we told you about it last time before the emergency vehicle showed up. the car hit the center divide. the person inside was injured. the left lane is blocked with emergency vehicles and traffic is slowing down behind the toll plaza. but it's also very windy. the rain is moving through. not very good driving on the dumbarton. 880, looks like weather is moving through here. traffic will be slow. we'll give you a complete update in a few minute. sal you've been telling us about accidents and claudine wong just found another trouble spot in vallejo and joins us live with an update on that situation. claudine? >> hi, tori. a lot of spinouts today from the wet roads. you are taking a look at the latest one on the 780, just off interstate 80. i talked to the driver. he didn't want to go on camera but he told me he was coming off this interchange. he said he got cut off. he tried to correct.

he spun out. he hit this sign right here and it caused him to spin out and end up on this roadway. you can the roadway is really soft. what's interesting, he said the roadway was pretty slick when he spun off and the highway patrol officers that are on scene right now. there's a couple of them. one of them just came from a spinout on 80. another one came up from a spinout on 37. this is something aing again and again this horning. nothing major. fortunately, nobody was hurt in this accident or the other two we just learned about. but it's certainly causing a little bit of a mess on the roadways and it's something drivers thud keep this mind if they are heading out. even if the rain has stopped, the roads are stick and you will want to be careful. here's an update on that huge tree that toppled over a little while ago. caltrans crews finished cutting down and removing this giant eucalyptus tree from part of the freeway, about an hour ago.

drugs like cocaine, opium and heroin. the drugs are used for by yes medical research and -- biomedical research. the director of the energy says some of -- of the department says some of those drugs are missing and there's a discrepancy between the amount onhand and the amount purchased. the general says the lapse of accounting is now under investigation. the labor department just announced that first-claim claim -- first-time claims for unemployment insurance went you. 410,000 people filed for new jobless benefits. that's up 25,000 from the week before and 10,000 more than economists were expecting. continuing claims, they also went up but only by about 1,000. there are now 3.91 million people getting unemployment compensation nationwide. well, president obama will arrive later today here in the bay area. it will be a quick overnight

neighborhood because norman welsh lives here -- lives here. he and chris butter are behind bars facing at least 20 felony drug charges. but their request for the interview this morning was met with the police response. a report says the two men were arrested yesterday morning in benicia by federal agents. both men are accused of possessing, transporting and selling marijuana, methamphetamines and steroids. in addition, second-degree burglary and conspiracy are charges. last january, welsh helped the media with a pipe bomb down at pacheco. welsh was with the force for 12 years. we were declined for an interview this morning at the home and police are there. we asked if there was a connection. police denied there was. >> we will deal with bail. we may wait into a courtroom

beared him -- embarrassed him in class. a shooting happened last night, around 9:00, at hunter street. the victims were shot in a car. one victim was a woman. we're hearing she may have been shot in the back. they are looking for two suspects in a car that escaped possibly described as a buick regal. police in vallejo are expected to release the name of a man whose body was found in the carquinez strait. according to the coast guard, the body was pulled near the strait from vallejo yesterday afternoon around 2:30. investigators say it's still not clear how he died. there's still a long way to go when it comes to improving the safety of cribs. nicole collinsdowns us live from washington, d.c. now with some important steps that parents can take to keep their babies safe. this is -- this is surprising.

>> you would think so. but let me explain sort of the research here and how they came to some of these conclusion. it's not sesurpriseing. basically what happened is that a group of doctors did a study and it was pub olympiced in the med cal journal of pediatrics. they looked over emergency room data for the past 19 years. they found that almost 10,000 infants and toddlers were injured each year in cribs, play pen and bass so net accidents. the researcher was shocked by the numbers. he didn't expect them to be this high. they found more than 181,000 kids under the age of two were taken to emergency rooms nationally. this is a national study. for injuries related to those injuries, 8% of all injuries actually came from cribs. those-- 83% of all injuries came from cribs. falling bass the most common,

especially in 1 to 2-year-olds, when children are big enough to climb out of the crib. and the study's author says more prevention efforts are needed. but they do know that a recent ban on dropside cribs are likely and other toddler accessory are connectioned to be -- accessories are expected to be cuss -- discussed as well. nicole collins. back to you. the lead author talked about that give pretty common sense advice. make sure the crib is built properly. but some things that maybe aren't so obvious to some people. don't put pillows and blankets in the crib. that's a good way to make sure no suffocation or strangallation happens. one a child gets to be a

certain height, take them out and put them in a bed and the study says when they do get older, adjust the level of the mattress. kids are top heavy. they get in there and they will topple over and a lot of these injuries are head and neck injuries. >> are there any specifics on what types of play pens or cribs are the most dangerous? >> they didn't get into the study but i can tell you this dropside cribs, that's a big one. they are very dangerous. a lot of manufacturers have already stopped making them and they are not seeing them right now. stay away from those if you have them in your home. 8:38. this morning, we willed should learn more about the final phase of construction on the eastern span of the bay bridge. these are live pictures right now. you can barely see what looks like part of the construction for the new pan there. the tower coming up in the
